The professionals are the ones who messed up my hair by putting relaxer on hair that was already straight. They weren't being careful at all. Five different professionals did that over the years. My hair was the length as yours. I ended up having about 7 or 8 inches cut off because of damage. But I like that it's a lot easier to handle now that it's not so long. I don't think I'll be going back to the salons any time soon. I'll be better off doing it myself.

@@gritsnwavy3059 I had one but we had to move a different state. This lady did great work. I haven't found anyone else here who works the way she does. She never ruined my hair and it always looked nice when she did it. Something else that I liked about her was that she never made clients sit around and wait for a long time. She would start on my hair a few minutes after I got there. And her next client would show up when she was almost done with me. She was a real diamond and her business was very successful.

She says I’m ungrateful and she knows what she’s doing and I should do it myself if I’m gonna complain etc etc. I’ve always been scared to do it on my own, but I think after watching this, I’m gonna go for it, this video is the most helpful I’ve seen yet.

The advice I have for any African girl out there is this- stay away from the hair salons. I recently braided my hair after many years in this hair salon. I couldn’t sleep properly for one week. I had to take it off. It’s just recently black girls started understanding hair care for tightly curled hair. The saloonist doesn’t know better especially when they can’t feel the pain caused on the hair they’re making. The most annoying saloonists are the ones who argue with you about how tight their braids are. I have had this experience especially with the ones that come from the French speaking parts of West Africa. I have learnt to make my own hair by watching TH-cam videos and I feel liberated and comfortable with the results.

After watching Seun video and hairlicous video I decided to combine their tips and tricks together and I was very pleased. I used splitting my hair in half method to relax one side at a time 20 minutes on each side. I started in the crown on each side for it is the thickest part of my hair. It took longer but it was worth the result. All in all it took me an additional 20 minutes but my hair was evenly relaxed. I used hairlicous tips to prep my hair for my relaxer and used products she suggested prior to applying the relaxer. Checkout her relaxer video also. Thanks Seun for showing the half hair method it was very easy and the results were awesome. I will continue with this method as long as I self relax.

I think your videos are amazing! I like how you mention your errors and how to correct them. I'm starting to do hair at age 50. I've always braided my own hair and added extensions but I've never felt confident enough to do others. Many of my friends and family love my style but couldn't get me to do their hair. During this pandemic the Lord spoke to me about using more of my talents for His glory. My gift is hospitality. I know women and young girls in my neighborhood who would like their hair done but can't afford it. Getting your done lifts the very soul of a woman, in my opinion. Watching your videos gave me the final boost I needed to say, "I can do this!"
My desire is to do women/young women hair in my neighborhood for free and trust God to bless me with whatever I'll need to do that.
Thank you for your honesty and your professional tutorials! They are so detailed, that even I and able to follow them and learn.

I would actually get the relaxer all over my roots and scalp too. I started having a lot of breakage and damage and even thinning in some parts. A lot of it has grown back but now that I’ve done more research and actually learned more about it, I feel like I might actually be able to do it without my hair falling out. Relaxer is meant for the hair, not my scalp, roots and follicles lol

Generally it's best to start application at the crown area. The relaxer softens the hair, the smoothing is what gets the hair straighten. To avoid too much smoothing you would allow time for the relaxer to soften the hair. It's also best to retouch every 6 to 12 weeks.

to be honest.. I have only been to a hair salon 7 times in my whole 23 years...
I don't trust anyone touching my hair besides my mom.. I'm also autistic.. and I have sensory issues when people touch my hair..
Every single time I have gone to a salon.. I always cry.. or move my head because I truly hate when people touch my hair..
I had to stop going to hair salons..
I prefer relaxed hair.. over my natural curls..

It is one of the reasons I stopped braiding my hair cause none of them will be like hey let me not braid your edges in so tight. I do everything for my hair my self and now I do see the improvements. All the hate for professional hair stylists and hair salons in the comments is a little sad. I don't have a relaxer but I do have the Japanese hair straightening system, and it's done by a spanish lady who's hair texture is radically different than mine. Yet she's licensed and experienced with perming coarser textures and my hair has grown tremendously. i couldn't imagine trying to learn and taking the time to do all of that myself and achieving the super straight result that she gets. long story short, don't listen to the horror stories about "salon BAD" when it's just THEIR professional that they had a bad experience with. choose a good expereienced stylist and save your time and get a sleeker result

It took awhile to get the whole head covered and I was so worried about over processing it that I didn’t spend much time smoothing. So some of the hair in the crown is a little rough/wavy. I have one question that I think I might not have gotten well answered,
Do you mean, we should stretch our hair and apply on the new growth stretched or just part the hair and apply on the new growth as is, without stretching?
Another question, how did you manage your hair when you had underprocessed hair (9:22)? My last touch up was accidentally underprocessed (first time doing it at home after a LONG time) and I am scared if I correct it at my next touch up I will have a middle with "coarse -ish" hair compared to the rest of the hair length.
    I thank you LOL
