TOO TALL TREY OSBORNE, OPEN TRAILER, OPEN WHEEL WARRIOR

- Columbus, Ohio's Trey Osborne is clearly turning heads in the racing industry. Just 20 years young, the 6-ft., 8-in. red-haired racer has captured the attention and hearts of open-wheel fans and industry leaders alike. Working off an open-trailer with a band of volunteers, Osborne is, in many ways, a one-man machine. He sets up his sprint cars entirely, builds the motors and drives the wheels off them. When he's not in the car, he's working on the car non-stop...whatever it takes to get the job done. In his most recent demonstration of skill, he was offered a one-off ride in a USAC Silver Crown car for the recent Ted Horn 100 at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds. Arriving with just his sprint car seat -- he only has one -- he climbed in the car and was fifth quick on the practice board among 35 participants. Keep in mind, he had never sat in a Silver Crown Champ Car, much less compete on a mile dirt track. Then the engine blew up, cutting his day short. The car owner, so impressed as he was, offered Osborne a full-time ride in the same Crown car next year. The sky is the limit for Osborne, and we're all looking forward to what's next. The video you're about to see is the day after DuQuoin at Kokomo Speedway in the Vince Osman Memorial Championship where "Too Tall Trey" continued to impress...enjoy! #KokomoSpeedway #USACRacing #TreyOsborne #SprintCars #DirtTrackRacing #HistoryMysteryMan
He is a young man with a throwback frame of mind. Thanks for bringing him to our attention. I will certainly be following this youngster's career.
Glad to bring it to you Mike...thanks! HMM
Good things are going to come to this kid.
GREAT story.
Many thanks...HMM
@@sqd37l Nope. It's part of his persona..
It IS refreshing to see an open trailer/pickup racing team...very rare...
Triple T's a pretty impressive guy...best of luck in your career...!
Thanks for watching. Open trailers rock! HMM
Thanks for profiling this kid. He deserves the attention.
I'm with you on this kid...thanks! HMM
It takes a lot of energy, work, and personal sacrifice by him to race. Continued Good Luck to him.
Thanks again, Drew...HMM
Great to see driver working hard on car to make it better. Non wing. True throw back. Thanks
Trey is amazing...thanks for watching. HMM
Great Job Bubba, This kid is a gem. This is what racing needs to get back to and start driving down the super high cost of racing... "Stand on it RED"
You're always welcome! Thanks again...HMM
Love this story, had the privilege of having him drive my silver crown car at Duquoin this year. Started him on used tires from last year and he was 5th quick and then the motor hurt us but what an experience he is so down to earth, respectful, and super knowledgeable. Hoping we can run some silver crown races next year with him
if he does get the chance to race for you again, maybe you ought to think about his engine building skills.
@@markwitkowski6418 valid point for sure but can't control part failure which was actually the valve spring retainer and they were new 3 weeks before the race
What car was he running?
@@steezuschrist6662 silver crown 88 at Duquoin mile
Any chance of seeing you guys at the Eldora 4-Crown?
What a story! Look for big things from that young man . He'll only improve with experience.
Thanks for the memories you've reawakened. Thanks for the impressive story. Very much appreciated!
Happy Trails!
Trey is amazing...all the way around. And happy trails to you too, Robert...HMM
Great interview and show… the country has a lot of guys like Trey…. They race on a shoestring and help from family and friends and love every minute of it.
And they're all great stories...everyone of them. Thanks James...HMM
Glad to see a young fellow out racing on his own dollar, can figure things out and builds his own stuff. Old School and cool.
I will keep an eye on him . Smart guy and I love how he put "Tall" on his race car . Good vid HMM .
Thanks Zilla...appreciate you. HMM
Terrific kid, really amazing that he does about everything himself!! Best wishes to him.
He's super for sure...thanks! HMM
Old school from a young kid!! Don't see that now days!
Gotta love it...thanks. HMM@@jimpritchard8354
Kid can drive ! He’s the whole package! Someone needs to pick this guy up and sponsor him to the big show!!! I was born in Kokomo but I left when I was a baby to Kentucky. But my grandpa lived in Winfall not too far from Kokomo and I would visit him as a kid in the summer and we were always going to the races!!!
As I understand it, Trey just got a full-time USAC Sprint Car ride in the 5 car. Thanks for watching, David...HMM
Master class on how to cover a race.
Thanks Alan...so appreciated. HMM
Shades of a AJ Foyt or Roger Rager,Heart of Jan Opperman, Thanks.
Interesting analogies...thanks Rick. HMM
Great Video HMM!
I love how you bring these new drivers to the forefront.
Another drive I'll have to follow.
I think Trey is going to get to make his dream come through.
Love the open trailer. Just like you said in the old days.
Thanks Roger. The grassroots stories are the best! HMM
@@HistoryMysteryMan they sure are! Keep them coming
I admire young guys like him . Good video Don .👍
Thanks again, Wayne! HMM
remember, racing is show business. Trey puts on a show.
Hard work pays off!!!
It sure does! Thanks Chuck...HMM
Great video HMM, as always! I will root for anyone in this day and age that puts their money in their car and not their hauler! Kid definitely has what it takes.
I'll buy that! Thanks for watching...HMM
Don, what a fantastic video. I seem to say this about all your videos....but I mean it more than ever on this one. First up. Columbus, Ohio. As you know, the town where I live and grew up. Very cool. And Trey is giving Cole Macedo a run for his money in the height department. 6 foot 8. My gosh. Open trailer. Man I love that. Another Brandon Wimmer! And Trey builds his own car, including engines. Kind of reminds me of a guy named Sammy who did these things when he first started.....and probably still does for the most part. I sure hope I can meet Trey. If so, I'll certainly mention I 'met' him on your channel. And finally, what a really humble young man. Thanks so much Don for featuring a guy like this. As much as I enjoy the famous drivers, I just as much enjoy the up and comers like Trey. 18,000+ viewers obviously enjoyed watching this one too! Very impressive Don.
Thanks Chuck. Trey is a super interesting story all the way around. Absolutely...if you see Trey, by all means mention my video...those things are what really help me the most. Closing in on 28,000 views!
What a great story...you are the Man HMN, thanks for all you do!
You're always welcome Joe; thanks for your support...HMM
Very personable young man. New fan here 👍👍
You and me both! Thanks for watching...HMM
A REAL RACE CAR “DRIvER” is one who understands how his car works and knowing how to work on the CAR !!
Trey is the real deal for sure; thanks for watching...HMM
Great young man I hope he makes it to Indy someday. I haven't forgotten about you Don 🍯🍯
Ha! No worries at all...thanks for checking back in. See you at the Big E. HMM
“You do know the NBA pays more than Kokomo Speedway, right?” Hilarious…great interview as usual.
Thanks Jonathan! HMM
Very interesting. The "string bean" can haul it.
good one!
😆😆😂😅🤭
Trey has a lot going for him,so talented, glad to see a man that can do it all.For 20 y.o.,it will only get better, and one day we may see Trey Osborne drinking milk at Indy. Thanks for another great story ,and the way you gather your content.O ne last thing is the open trailer is something that should be required,so the public can see those great machines on their way to or from a racetrack.
Thanks...I love the open trailers...takes me back to my youth. We'd get so excited when we'd see one going down the road. Thanks for your support, Mark...always appreciated. HMM
Crazily humble, great guy
when I was 20 I was 6 ft, but I couldn't get a ride in a sprint, because I was told I was to tall!! & I couldn't get in a 1/4 midget also to Tall. I Wish You lots of Luck, Trey !!!
No such thing as too tall, or too short for that matter...thanks! HMM
Great story, thank you for sharing. Will now be following this young man.
Trey is easy to root for; thanks Tom...HMM
I love the kids Focus .he's amazing!!He is going to be great🤟🤟🏁🏁
Been following Trey for about two months he is very talented.
He sure is...super smart too. Thanks...HMM
That’s true outlaw material right there now.. 👍🏻
Or Indy 500 material! Thanks...HMM
@@HistoryMysteryMan that’s next. lol.. He reminds me of the original outlaws, like scruffy, opperman, Hewitt.. etc.
Super nice kid and very generous with his time. Thanks as always HMM Job well done as usual
Thanks again, Trent. Generous with his time for sure, especially when you consider how much work he does on his car. HMM
I'm a "retired " dirt track racer myself. Love to see young talent. Right on brother.
Thanks for watching...HMM
Way to be young Man, follow that dream
seems like a really down to earth dude and very well spoken. i'd love to chill with him
You should visit with him at the track; he'd be glad to chill! HMM
Don , a long time team I’d love to see you get in the minds of …. The hurst brothers !! My lord the history and stories. Recently they stated they may stop posting on their Facebook page and I encouraged him to please keep sharing !! Go get ‘em Don 😉
Man that's a great idea Chad; thanks for sharing that here. I need to get on that! HMM
Very impressive young man. I first noticed him about a month ago and been following since.. He's a car owners dream. Understands set up and can build his engines. He's definitely not afraid of work. Very cool. Impressive.🇺🇸💪🏁
Yeah...I can see this kid getting a legitimate opportunity based on his story alone, then there are all the great qualities he brings. Thanks for watching...HMM
Dude is so nonchalant about all his digging and success , hard to not root for somebody like that !!
I'm with you Chad; he's easy to root for...thanks! HMM
Hell yeah I raced for 8 years n that was my dream too
Don we appreciate your hard work !!
You're always welcome Chad...thanks for your kind words. Helps keep me inspired to keep going. HMM

Great piece on this young man, thanks Don
You're welcome Don; thanks for watching...HMM
Better get his autograph now! This guys a natural
That sounds like sound advice...thanks! HMM
Blue collar racer..This guy reminds me of the old school 50s-60s Ascot dirt boys like Jones and Ruttman
open trailers.. doing their own work and just racing their brains out for the hell of it.
I like your comparisons to Jones and Ruttman...certainly appropriate. Thanks again...HMM
This young driver reminds me of the old time sprint car drivers
I see what you mean...young kid with old school ways...thanks. HMM
What a nice young feller with his head screwed on.👍
Plus he is a bloody good on the tools and a good driver as well ... 👍🇦🇺
He deserves a good sponsor to get behind him.. 💲👍👍👍
Agreed. He just got a USAC Silver Crown ride for this weekend's 4-Crown at Eldora! Thanks for watching...HMM

The potential for greater success is there…wouldn’t it be something to see that young man with a bottle of milk and the Borg-Warner trophy…
Oh that would be the story of the century! Thanks...HMM
Great stuff. I’ll keep my eye out for this kid. I’d love to see some sponsors come his way.
Thanks Mike...me too! HMM

Cannot disagree....HMM
Admirable talent for sure especially at age 20. Ha! I'd like to see a picture of him and David Gravel standing next to each other. Thanks for the video.
Or trey and rico
Ha! Thanks for watching...Kevin. HMM
Take a look at Steve Butler’s outfit in1985-86 with Phil Poor car.
seems like a cool kid . as a fellow open trailer racer we need to remember trailers dont win races .
Good point. Thanks Paul...good luck in your open trailer adventures. HMM
If you live close to a track and basically only go there then you don't need a big enclosed rig. You don't need to carry any spares and you can get dressed at home. All you need is tires, fuel, one tool box and a few basic large tools. You can splurge and get an old generator and an air compressor and tank too.
I'll buy that! Thanks...HMM
SHINE BRIGHT TREY!💥🙌💪
AUSTRALIA!🤍💙❤
A bright future indeed. Thanks Glen...for checking in from Australia! HMM
Awesome simply awesome
I'll buy that! Thanks...HMM
really good
Really thanks! HMM
That young man has the gift. He can feel that car and put it where he wants at a relatively young age. It would be good if he could find a way into some racing where he could make real money as a driver.
I think Trey will eventually get to where he wants to go. #CompletePackage...thanks Mike, HMM
this guy got a huge future ahead
I'll buy that! HMM
I used to follow another Osborne, Lee, back in the day. He also was one to maintain and build his own cars. Won one down in Florida back in the 70's using a new "experimental" torsion bar suspension that he built himself. He was a hell of a driver too! Any relation by chance?
To my knowledge, no relation. I remember Lee Osborne; he drove and orange No. 81 in USAC competition from time to time. Trey drives the 81 in Silver Crown. Thanks for watching...HMM
I really like this guy. Another racer that knows racecars. As an aside however, I will go to my grave not believing that wheel offset makes much or any difference, besides a very powerful placebo effect. There's too many variables including wheel flex, which is both less large and less predictable than everyone seems to think and would be offset by axle flex and vice versa, engine torque, torque tube torque, tire flex, flop and vibration, as well as the way the wheels would flex around the vertical axis (either right or left depending on a lot of variables including wheel offset, tire carcass, stagger, wheel spacing, under drive or braking, etc.) if at all, as well as how all of these things work in concert when combined with gyroscopic precession. Not to mention how completely inconsistent a dirt track is, especially on the cushion. It’s also strange to me to say that the wheel flexing in one direction would cause a predictable effect vs flexing the other way. I just don't buy it, but it seems to help a lot of drivers for one at least one of the reasons mentioned above. This dude rules though. He has a fan, from a Colorado racer that moved to Indiana and went non wing and midget racing in the 'OOs and '10s, and had to know how to do everything himself also. Keep digging dude!
Reading around, it seems people aren’t even basing their wheel offset setup decisions based on wheel flex or deflection, just “where the center of the wheel places weight on the tire” which doesn’t even logically make sense, if you’re assuming a wheel doesn’t flex. Neglecting the added weight, if a wheel doesn’t flex it doesn’t know where the center of the wheel is at all and might as well be a solid cylinder of aluminum. Excuse my little diatribe. I just can’t help but scratch my head every time the subject of wheel offset as a setup tool comes up. Anyway, love your videos!
Thanks...I appreciate your technical feedback. I love the stories in this industry, but the technical aspect of the sport isn't totally in my wheelhouse, which is why I appreciate your feedback on technology...it's how I learn more about it. HMM
Trey was nice young man to follow for the night. It looks like he can do just about everything to get his car ready to race. In the intro when he bicycled and got into the wall, I thought his throttle might have gotten stuck the way he barreled out of it and kept going. I wonder if there was just enough damage that may have caused him to be unable to maintain the desired pace. The season is starting to wind down but I'm sure we can continue to look forward to more good content until racing starts to pick up next spring. I'll be anxious to see if you are in Eldora as I am typing this.
Trey is an amazing young man for sure...I believe with a bright future. I'm sure smacking the wall didn't help the handle. I missed the World 100 at Eldora...maybe the 4-Crown. Thanks again...HMM
I'd put Bathurst against the Indy 500 any day. Now that's a race!
This kid will be going places
I truly believe so...thanks Scott. HMM
He’s fun to watch the kid is a gasser!!
The newest GasMan! Thanks Chad...HMM
Moxie, the kid has Moxie
A race to rival if not beat is the Bathurst race at mt panarama have a look if you get a chance
Never heard of that event, but I'll check it out...thanks. HMM
I’ve never seen a trailer win a race, it’s what’s on the trailer and in the car
0:47 What's that noise?
Might have to fold him up a little to get him in an indycar but I'm pullin to see him there!
Introduce that kid to Ed Carpenter!!!
Man oh man I love your idea! Thanks for sharing it here...HMM
triple T is after it nice job , keep it up & donnie shots will be calling you up .
👍
Total Wheelman
Totally! Thanks for watching...HMM
Can someone explain the device at about the 11:30 mark. Thanks
That's a bleeder valve setup. When the tires heat up the air pressure builds up in the tires making them grow bigger which changes the handling of the car. You set the maximum pressure that you want and and it bleeds off the extra pressure to maintain the desired rear tire sizes, stagger. (Note: the rear axle is a tube, so the controller fits nicely in the rear axle.)
@@joeyager8479 Thank you
Thanks Joey, for that detailed explanation! HMM
I C A young Buddy Holly. I race and play rock n roll guitar . Drive smart !!!!!
I can see the Buddy Holly in him; thanks for watching. HMM
U can do it
He's doing it alright...just got a full-time ride in a really nice USAC Sprint Car...thanks! HMM

Trey is amazing...thanks for checking out the video. HMM
when i was 20 i stood 5' 5 and weighed 120 and did not wear glasses perfect eyesight and i couldnt buy a ride in a sprint car i also had no money and today at 81 i hate all 4 wheel racing
HHM gota give him the G Raff moniker......!
He has Asperger's super Powers 👌
Is there a way to send Trey financial support?
Good question. I'd say to reach out to him through his Facebook page at Trey Osborne Racing; thanks for asking! HMM
He looks like he is about 6'4" - 6'5'.....or 5'8" without the hair.
I can tell you weren't standing alongside him...HMM
He is my height, I am also 6'8" and absolutely HATED and did not play basketball.
The only difference is I am 51 lol.
Not too late for the NBA! Thanks for watching...HMM
Open trailers 60s? I know of cars travelling on open trailers in the last decade, and cars running near the front too.. Fancy trailer or a decent engine? easy!
Good Hod, did his parents put him in a bag of miracle grow after he was born, good luck to you kid,
