Ironically the last time I spoke to this State championship wrestler named Steve Kinser was at a Penn State/Indiana wrestling match in State College, PA around 2008. His boy Kurt was a Hoosier. Steve is one of my heros in racing. I have a picture of Steve and I taken from his hauler at the Kings Royal. I just kind of made myself at home seeking his photo....and it was right before qualifying. Steve couldn't have been more friendly and receptive to having his picture taken. I saw him race for the first time around 1976 at Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway. I remember my Dad being so excited to see him race as he'd been reading about him in Racing Wheels Magazine and Speed Sport News. I got to be out in the pits with my brother for the races and, boy, what a thrill! My brother took me around to see all of the drivers afterward and he got autographs from some of them for me. I still have and treasure that program. The line for Kinser was VERY long so, unfortunately, we didn't get his. I grew up in the auto racing world so I was no stranger to it, but it was a BIG deal for me to be out in the pits with some of the greatest drivers of that era and one who would become the greatest of all time.

Three names come to mind, when I reflect back to my time in the late 80's. Steve Kinser, Doug Wolfgang and Sammy Swindell. I would cheer on Wolfgang , marvel at the talent of Kinser. I do however take great pride in the fact that Swindell flipped me off twice in one night. He didn't like the way I ran my push truck. The first was accidental on my part, the second let's say I gotta be me ! They ran two nights at Fargo ND when I was there.
