The Constantine steelbook does have final artwork which is the famous shot of Constantine being grabbed by a swarm of demons. So that black steelbook we first saw was not final, just work-in-progress cover.
I’m going to assume they forgot to put ‘tbc’ in Constantine… because that’s some bad decision making. In defence of labyrinth those covers are by the original labyrinth conceot artist and creature designer Brian Froud. Guy is a legend in faerie/folk art. It is an interesting decision to put it on the Blu-ray but I assume it’s in celebration of him as much as it is about the film. I hope there’s going to be a feature length documentary on him otherwise it makes little sense. Agreed that Demolition man doesn’t look good but you’ll find that most 90s films onwards will have issues with custom artwork as actors started negotiating likeness rights that need signing off. Some actors have interesting rules that have to be respected like, for example, which images have been approved, the size of their portrait in comparison to other cast members etc. I would go out on a limb and suggest either Sylvester Stallone or Snipes wouldn’t sign off their likeness so instead they went with a Batman/ghostbusters style logo cover to bypass it.
I’m okay with minimal artwork, but that Constantine steelbook … was a choice. I also don’t like the little dc logo on the top left. It looks like placeholder artwork.
The Labyrinth artwork (both the slip and the steelbook) are concept art by Brian Froud, the conceptual designer of the movie. He also did the art for The Dark Crystal which was also used by Shout. I think they’re absolutely beautiful.
@@thelastmoviestandingfor sure. It’s all subjective. One of the reasons I like it is that the same work with the baby was already used as a cover for the official tie in art book that came out in the 80’s alongside the movie so it’s kind of cool to see the work used for the film release as well. I also have the book so there’s a certain nostalgic charm to it.
Escape from New York vexes me. It's not like it's BAD artwork per se - I would hang that up in my studio. It just doesn't feel like it matches the vibe of the movie it's supposed to be representing...
I am upset about all the artworks deviation from the original artwork posters. I dont know if it a license thing, why they dont use cinema poster artworks. its started with the DVD era.
It's meant to entice modern audiences, as well as an effort to get diehard fans to have yet another reason to buy the same movie yet again (especially when a label knows that another label has the rights to release it also). If every single release of a movie had the exact same artwork, I'm willing to bet money that it would sell fewer copies. People tend to be enticed by having options, but as with anything art-related there's going to be hits and there's going to be misses. I'm turned off by bad alternatives just as much as the next guy, but I don't think any of us have a problem with it when it's done well.
original poster art or vhs cover for me; I agree. There's this whole new generation of movie fans growing up with the 'wrong' artwork in mind. It's kinda disturbing. In 20 years you'll think about a movie experience you cherished and some alternative cover of a Criterion or Arrow blu-ray pops up in your head. Imagine the music scene operating the same way, and Nirvana's 'Nevermind' would be re-released with alternative cover art. It just sucks guys!
Original artwork artwork will always win out for me. When you see the artwork of a movie you know it was of a time. As an example, (James Bond)I do not want to see Thunderball's cover ever looking like a more modern title like Skyfall. Not to say I don't appreciate the new stuff as an option to flip or it in a poster, but I never want it as my cover... Ever!
Honestly getting sick of steelbooks. I miss when we had digibooks and steelbooks were rarer. Now it's like every studio thinks it's what everyone wants and it gives them an excuse to charge ludicrous prices for. Sure, you don't have to worry about denting or ripping a steelbook like you would a slipcover, but it no longer feels special getting a steelbook bc there are just TOO DAMN MANY.
I make custom sleeves and slipcovers myself, and just did (and showed) a slipcover for 'Coming To America', but, I've not printed it, as it's not up to my usual standard. That looks just like Naomi Watts on that second artwork for 'Labyrinth', and, it obviously should not.
Less-is-more minimalism is a legitimate aesthetic that can be done well. There's a subtle art to it. But I agree that this one drops the ball pretty hard. It really does look like a placeholder.
I'm a big believer in using the original poster art,or some version of it. Arrow did a Big Trouble in little China Steelbook, covered it with the original artwork and it's beautiful. Kinda like when Gladiator '92 came out Spanish Bluray, they restored the original poster art... I'm just going to make this my thing...
Grest video dude. These aren't super new but the Studio Ghibli steelbooks were a bit underwhelming for me, esoecially when you compare them to what they did with Coraline, ParaNorman, etc.
@@thelastmoviestandingfrom what I have noticed from the UK collectors they are different exterior box art work with the steelbook having the same artwork as individual steelbook release.
These days they seem to take pride in ruining iconic movie artwork, some examples are recent 4K versions of: The Thing, They Live, Escape From New York, Batman (1989), Gremlins. I prefer posters that dont follow the floating head style theme as its more unique / old skool video, imagine Ghostbusters without its iconic Ghostbuster logo on the front cover for eg. Batman lost its bat symbol, The Thing lost its glowing monster, They Live lost its eye looking through sunglasses with Alien reflection. If you want to revamp the artwork make the cover reversible.
I grew up in the UK so I was very disappointed when I first got the Austin Powers region 1 dvd and found that it was missing certain scenes. The international cut is better in my opinion. Not only does it include the henchman scenes which I find hilarious, but also the Christian Slater orange sherbet scene, plus certain jokes that were considered too racy for American audiences such as the gap between pussy and cat that was much longer in the international cut. Cutting that out ruins the joke. I don’t love the clown artwork, but I’ll be picking it up because I haven’t seen that version of it since vhs.
I was going to get the 88 Films - From Beyond.. but after comparing features I had to go with the VS without slip and the ugly art. They should've blended some green in there or something.. At least I ordered The Keep LE in time, although thats honestly a bit boring too
You were pretty close in your assessment of the Congo artwork to me as my first thought when I looked at it was, “Why does it have a sperm escaping its eye?” That white mark looks exactly like how we’ve seen sperm drawn. It’s gross. The ‘Constantine’ does look like their artist was given 5 minutes to do it. Let’s hope it’s indeed placeholder artwork…🤞🏻 The ‘Escape From New York’ is so bad I not only can’t tell what the art is supposed to be of but even what the heck the film is about. I have never seen the film and I definitely Wouldn’t want to if I saw that on a shelf somewhere…
Escape from New York is a carpenter classic, you should check it out sometime. That cover art doesn't represent the film at all, it makes it look like an Expendables movie lol. I would just get the standard edition Scream Factory 4K with the original poster art if you ever decide to buy it.
My only guess for that Congo cover art is that the white part is a detached eyeball. This is one of the most notorious parts in the book that was seriously tamed down for the film. The original artwork for Constantine on DVD looks the same as the 4K slip cover, which I prefer over the steelbook.
Great idea for a video topic!! Have to agree with Constantine and Demolition Man looking dogshit, I also think Blow Out from Criterion was disappointing, the cover with Travolta and all his broken tapes around him is so boring, wish they used the original black and white image of his face screaming. Drag Me To Hell deserved a better cover too, I like the Scream Factory artwork for the blu ray
"What is that on his eye"...... looks like someone busted his nut to me. SF's From Beyond cover art looked a lot better, even the artwork in Full Moon's (not the Arrow release) Empire Pictures box set had better art. The Major League cover art looks like a promo for Major League Chew, looks really funky. That Paradise cover art looks like a really bad 70's romance novel you'd see at a supermarket. I agree, all of these covers suck lol. Why can't they just use the original theatrical poster art? They knew what they were doing back then.
That Paradise 1982 movie was soooo bad I sold it minutes after watching it luckily I had the fun city slip so that helped. But I really liked Heavenly Bodies that was really fun with a great soundtrack too.
I'm probably in the minority here, but I really like the Constantine steelbook art. The all black look is cool in a minimalist way, and then you open it up and BAM it's a big, bright, full-spread image across the whole inside panel. I dig it.

Great video! Subbed :),

I believe they aren’t hiring artists anymore and it’s some one at a computer pasting clip art.

Aren't you buying it for the movie? Or are you spending two hours looking at the cover?
I’ve still got the dvd version, may upgrade just to standard 4k
The Constantine steelbook is such a missed opportunity if this is the artwork. If this is the case I won’t be ordering this.
