  • The PCT journey continues! We wake up early for our climb up to Muir Pass. Full of snow, rock, and icy water! After descending the pass, we hike by the stunning Wanda Lake, make our way down the Evolution Basin and into the mosquito filled Evolution Valley. The following morning we take a detour around the washed out San Joaquin bridge, via the Skurka “Over the Top” route, swing by Muir Trail Ranch, and end the day with yet another big climb. Cheers!

The pickings at MTR are better later in the season, usually after mid July. Great views the past 2 days... Thanks for sharing...

Seems like it was picked clean by other PCT hikers. I’m sure after the bubble has gone through it would get better.

I recall that climb N of MTR and camping next to a stream near the top. Tough one.

2014: due to bad wx & fatigue, I overnighted in the Muir Hut. Much warmer. Memorable.
I thought the alt around the missing bridge skipped Muir Pass.

One of the options was to bail out at Bishop Pass and come back in over Piute Pass. That skips a 30 mile section of trail (Muir included). The Skurka over the top route just goes up and around a 2-3 mile stretch.

Beautiful!! I'm always impressed with the lasting construction of the Muir "hut"! I like the music you've paired with your beautiful videos! Try getting some lemon eucalyptus bug spray. Cutter and a couple others make it. No poison.
Choose your own trail, such fun and looks really tough clamoring over all those rocks!!

Thank you! Good idea with the lemon eucalyptus bug spray. Have not seen any in these mountain town stores though. Just picaradin (which didn’t work at all) or deet. May need to order it online.

Anna, where from in Louisiana? Everytime I see hikers talk about mosquitoes, I'm like "yeah ok, try our south Louisiana mosquitoes." But you just gave me much better context lol. Rock on yall!

Haha right! I was born in Ruston but most of my relatives are in southern Louisiana so that’s where I’ve spent the most time.

I’m very surprised that you drank the water without filtration from that high mountain stream. Giardia, viruses, and bacteria can be anywhere these days. You really shouldn’t risk being off-trail for a few days with gastroenteritis or a Giardia infection.

Fair enough. Looking back that would have been the wise decision. Made it out without an issues fortunately.

Rarely filtered water in the Sierras, never got sick. Only filtered in standing lakes and puddles.

@@PhoenixGenesis Good for you. I just love anecdotes since they have no basis in science or medicine.
