for anyone w might be struggling with the first riff what i like to do is use my first and ring finger and then lift my first finger for the second part. ofcourse that might be hard for some people but i would recommend trying it to see if its any easier for you

Fade to Black - The song is great as a teaching tool because of how accessible it is to beginners as well as how complicated certain parts of it are. It has a great single-note intro, intermediate intro solo and some fantastic chord embellishments. The heavier power chord parts are great to learn basic metal techniques. And finally the end solo is great at showing how a lot of classic blues licks can be used even in metal. A lot of the repeating lines in the solo can be traced back to old blues licks. When i was learning it, I found it also helped with getting my speed alternate picking up to mark. The song is also great for showing students scales other than the Minor Pentatonic. Just my 2 cents but i hope you teach this one!

I found that a different finger placement works quite well for riff 1 - open E, ring finger A string on fret 7, first finger D string fret 5, and then use the middle and first finger for the next 2 notes on the E string. There's a bit of moving around but thought I would share for any others struggling with the other 2 placements :)

One suggestion. At the start of each video, please tell your audience what effects, if any, you're using and maybe even the settings. The type amp may be helpful also. Not a huge deal on most songs but some (like this one that starts with a kind of "creepy" clean guitar that morphs into a huge distortion) it would be helpful. Maybe you can even wangle some pedal endorsements out of the deal! Thanks!

  • @xactli

Also - brilliant lesson - I've Entered Sandman about a fucktillion times and never realised that the open-g at the end of the fill is a nifty way to relax back into the riffage without having to rush (and occasionally fumble) thefollowing F-sharp power chord. I was finishing the fill way up at E on the G-string. No idea why. Thanks for putting me right. xxx

Huge Metallica-fan here! Thanks for the lesson. I already knew the song, but a lesson on the solo would be killer! It also cleared a few things up for me that I've never managed to figure out myself, so that was great!
A lesson on Hero of the Day would be awesome!!! :)

I always used the pinky on 7 and index on 5th fret then used the right and middle for the 6-5 on low E string. May be easier for some people and still get the more authentic sound

The final note of the riff1 sequence ( the A note ) can be played Hendrix style, with your thumb. Allows for the easiest fingering and avoids having to use the g string.

sarg141 assuming that you are still interested after 5 months...
On my Roland micro cube, I've got my gain =way up=, and my tone middling - that gritty, muddy sound when you alternate palm muting really sells the song, so whatever you have, as rhythm guitar, try and setup to get all the crunch out of your bass and middle strings. A dash of delay. My volume on my guitar is about 80%, same mid tone setup, and my selector is on the rear pickup.
Really I find this song is sold by your palm muting technique - what you let ring, what you mute, and how deeply you mute it. On that, I can cheat so hard on my Fender with the floating bridge - I can palm mute, vibrato a whole chord, both, or neither, (and you're doing all 4 at some point in Enter Sandman) sound like the shit and still be a bad guitarist :D

It's a pointless exercise. The sound will vary enormously even if you're using exactly the same gear. There are so many variables e.g. playing style, room ambience, etc. You're far better using your ears and the controls on your amp to get the sound you want.

Spot on about knowing what riffs to play and when...
I've played this live, (bass, drums, guitar and vocal) and coz I was totally freaked when the bass players amp died, I stupidly soldiered on and consequently played it all in the wrong order. The singer gave up, the drummer didn't notice and the crowd went batshit crazy for it - coz well, y'know - SANDMAN! I must have kept playing it (randomly) for about 20mins while the bass was fixed. Best gig ever! xxx
