  • This video covers how I fixed my secondary air injection pump (p410 problem code) on my 2004 Mercedes E55 AMG. I replaced the bad relay that caused the pump to burn itself out. I also replaced the motor from my pump with the motor from a cheaper and easier to find non-AMG pump. These newer pumps are more easily available and cheaper compared to the AMG pumps. This is great since you only need to replace the motor anyways.

    Update/Correction: The part number for the relay for the 2005-2006 E55 is 002-542-72-19

      I have a 05 E55 I tried putting the 3 prong and I got a current fault code for relay. So I put a new 4 prong relay.

    One of my dream cars and your videos and presentations are top-notch. Your car is extremely clean and looking at the bottom it has no dirt. This is the way i keep my 2007 CLK Kompressor.

    You are the man...I have an 04 E55 also and my relay started sticking this weekend. I thought it was my airmatic pump at first since it's in the same area, but it turned out to be the secondary air pump. And thank you so much for posting the location of the relay...it was really nice of them to keep it separate from all the other relays ;-)

      Just to update, I had a successful surgery using this part from FCP Euro - www.fcpeuro.com/products/mercedes-air-pump-0580000025 $119 for a brand new part, you can't beat it :-) And they sell the replacement Hella Relay too - www.fcpeuro.com/products/saab-rear-window-defroster-relay-900-9000-8522310 I don't work for them, just putting links for anyone else looking for parts :-)

      I have a 2004 Mercedes E55 AMG as well and my car just threw the same code. P0410 and it was scanned by AutoZone for me. The person at AutoZone said it was my O2 sensors, not the relay or pump. I am getting very bad gas mileage and my car hesitates under full throttle. To me, it seems it is running rich, which is why I am getting bad gas mileage. I am curious if you both had the same issue, meaning it is the pump and this fix will work or if it could be my O2 sensors. I know, I should go to the stealer, but they might take my left arm and half my right too. I can do the work myself, just curious if you all had the same issues to start with. Thank you.

      Stephen S My car did not have the problems you describe. On my car the relay got stuck in the on position and the air pump continued to run after I turned off the car and pulled the key. The air pump only runs for a min or so after a cold start. Since you're seeing problems with the engine running in general, O2 sensors seems like a reasonable cause esp if you have no records of them being changed.

      @@stephens1128 my 06 e55 is intermittently gose fastharness then falls onits face.then kill it start back up.full power then fall off.this is after the outside temperature sensor got ripped out with the wire .

      I have an 03 cl55 replacing the secondary air pump this weekend with relay but can’t seem to find anything as to where the relay is located , would you happen to know ?

      I believe you should switch the wires the go in the connector. Because I have a 2003 cl55 and when doing this rebuild this great video shows, I noticed the plug on the pump which is number 1 & 2 is the other way around from the new pump, so I just switched the two wires in the plug so the brown wire is now going to 1 and the red one going to 2. Where originally red goes to 1 and brown goes to 2.

    Is the partnr the same for an 2005 CLS55 AMG? I just bought one, and your channel is one that helped me tremendously (especially the 'Which should I buy, E55 or CLS55). I'm al for preventative maintenance and I was unaware of this.

    Just FYI for owners of SL55 or SL convertibles. (R230 chassis) The $5.00 relay for the convertible top motor can also fail in a stuck open issue and burn the motor out. I put my top up and after I got out of the car - ignition off - the pump kept running. By the time I dug into the trunk to pull power, the motor had burned out. Don't even price a new motor from the dealer. I got mine rebuilt by Top Hydraulics in Oregon. $600.00 and is built to outlast the life of the car! It sucks that our expensive cars can fail with a simple thing as a bad relay or stuck fuel injector. Replace yours now before it's too late!

      W210s are more reliable than W211 E55s. Just watch for rust on the w210 and make sure the transmission has been properly serviced in the past. Look for service records. Cheers.

    What about if you use the pump from a different car, like from the BMW 5 series, which use also the Bosch pump. Connector might be different, but hose are same diameter

    Hey AMG can you please do a comparison video on the big 4 E55/63 w211/212 and CLS55/63 I'm in the market for my first AMG car and I don't want to get stuck with the wrong AMG car. I want the car that with mods make the most power but at the lowest cost. I know that sounds dumb but I want to build a car and stay under 8k and that includes dyno time as well. Please help and if you can make that video I know with your skills it would be epic.

      Mike F I don't understand most parts are not that high for older AMG cars shit headers from Wesitec used only run about 600 the lowering module is only 1400 and most pulleys are less that 500. So what do you mean

      If you want the "most power" the answer is simple. E55/CLS55.....period. Long tube headers alone will add up to 40 whp. The M113k engine is bulletproof and anything that does go wrong is well documented. Most issues are around the cooling system for the air charge and upgrading is not very expensive/difficult. The 63's are down on torque and you have to watch out for the head bolt issue. I've had my CLS55 for over 2 years and it's been the best car I've owned, make sure it's properly maintained and it will provide years of smiles.

      What he is saying is you have to compromise. Do you want long term reliability down the line or more problems with less power just for a few interior upgrades? The E55 is much more powerful than the E63 which is Naturally Aspirated, if those interior upgrades are so important to you i will not be surprised if someone has already figured out a way to swap them into the E55. Check out the forums, The steering wheel and the front bumper swapped onto the E55 from the E63 are common mods that are done regularly.

    Is this secondary air pump for the air ride suspension? Or something different

      It is not for the suspension. It for reducing emissions of the engine on startup. The car has a different pump for the suspension.

    Are these are injection pumps supposed to be air tight? I did a smoke leak test and found that smoke was coming out of the injection pump

      It is easier to do than the E55. On the S500, the pump is attached to the front of the engine.

    I have a 2003 S 55 and I have the same code with the same problem. While the light was triggered in the pump bad, did you experience stumbling on cold starts even stalls? How about reduced engine performance Such as reduced power?

      my 06 e55 is intermittently it going fast then falls onits face.then stop kill it, start it back up.then full power then fall off again, this is after the outside temperature sensor got ripped out with the wire harness, ive a p0410

    I would like to add a correction note here, my car is a 2005 E55 but the air pump relay is at fuse box under the hood over the driver side
    Not at the air filter neither at the back boxes
    Parts numbers dont match the original one any more or neither ones you provided
    This is the original part number:
    A 002 542 23 19
    This is the one provided by Mercedes:
    A 000 982 85 23
    No one at Mercedes Benz knew exactly where the relay was, even whit the vin number
    So I basically just disconnected relay by relay until i got the air pump disable and the airmatic code “visit workshop”
    I hope this is helpful for some one else trying to replace it, if you feel like you wanna test it anyways just unplug one relay at the time rise and lower the suspension 2 times it should be enough to make the air pump refill the tanks, so if it keeps rising after that go to the next one until you get the error code
    I will drive the car and update this comment in a few days

    Hello I have a 2011 Mercedes c300 and I cannot locate where the relay goes for the secondary air injection pump/smog pump, I asked the Mercedes Parts department but also said they were not sure where it is located on the car and advised me to make an appointment so they can install it, I looked in my manuals book does not show

      No it won't do any damage. It is for emissions purposes. Some people delete this system.

      I initially saw this being discussed on MBworld. I decided to give it a try and it worked great. The motor in the pump is the same for almost all Mercedes of this era, just the housings are different.

      It forces air through to help warm up the catalytic converters on startup and reduce emissions.

      The basic OBD II scanners are only about $30 at any auto parts store and can reset codes like this. You will need a scanner.

      Mike F nothing to do with suspension. it's something you don't really need on the car but for emission reasons you do. I permanently disabled mine after it broke for the second time.

      It is not about suspension at least because it makes CE light on. I believe it additionaly blows cats or something.

      It's used to pump force a bunch of extra air through the catalytic so that it heats up faster. Cold start emissions requirement.

    Am I missing something here? All you had to do was swap over he bracket from the old one and place it on the new one and put it back on the car. Why did you swap the identical parts over when you didn't need to?

      He used a different pump system from a NON AMG vehicle, then used the new pump on old internals as they are different. The AMG pump is double the price.

    I put Walmart's Supertech fluids in my Benz. Only the brake fluid is non Walmart since they don't do DOT4 yet. My ABC hydraulic suspension even runs on Supertech! I also got a transmission conductor plate brand new for $70 with filter, pan gasket, and connector. You got nothing on me.
