I Modified My E55 AMG Transmission To Shift Like My C63 AMG & It’s Amazing! DIY Trans Mod!

  • I love my 2OO3 E55 AMG. It pretty much started my channel but there is one thing I hate. The 5-speed automatic transmission is a dog. The 722.6 transmission shifts slow and soft and that's not why we buy AMG cars. In this video, I fix the two issues that came up with the C63 in the last video and I change out the valve body on the E55. This completely transforms the driving experience of the E55 and is something you guys can all do at home in an hour or 2.

I never thought that my E55 shifts "painfully slow" like you like to say. I always considered it "average". The transmission reset, by pressing gas pedal for 3 seconds with the ignition set to on, does make it shift quicker. But yes, the transmission does shift slower than my C6 S6, but here's the thing, I prefer the transmission in the E55. It's smoother than the S6, the Mercedes is a luxury car after all, and I lean more towards comfort with straight line speed than performance and cornering.

This has me most excited over all mods so far. The downfall of the M113K cars is the trans. Sure it holds a lot of power but it's such a slop box. The combination of the updated valve body and a tune with some rev match would make a world of difference and probably leave me absolutely no desire to ever sell my CLS55. Thanks for all your vids Alex, makes owning a M113k car so much better.

I’m a porsche guy and say BMW is my guilty pleasure but good lord a E55 AMG seems like a damn good car to have
But the sloppy and slow, un-engaging 5 speed makes it a hard sell (sad Mercedes didn’t bother designing a DCT/or single clutch transmission to rival BMWs SMG transmission, at the time at least)

Jaguar used the 722.6 transmission in the 1998-2003 XJR and 1998-2002 XKR. The 722.6 was used by Porsche in the 2002-2005 911 (996 generation). The 722.6 can handle a lot of torque, because it was used in the S, CL and SL 600, Maybach 57, 57S, 62 and 62S, SLR McLaren and the S, CL and SL 65 AMG models.

Had to put on my headphones to hear the difference... The shifts sound amazingly quick compared to before, Alex. Looking forward to seeing the drag strip times compared to last season. Throttle 'blipping' for the downshifts would definitely help, sound really nice and allow you to prep the next shift in any street driving situation.

I recently read up on resetting my transmission. I now do it about monthly. The E55 may be similar to my 5 speed in my E500 Sport. The transmission can get sluggish because as I drive around town it has a learning feature that will adapt the tranny to street driving. A few months ago I wondered if it was me or if my tranny was sluggish on onramps onto the freeway. Quick pickup seemed to lack. On TH-cam I learned how to reset the transmission. It's a very simple process that takes about 3 minutes while sitting in the comfort of my driver seat. I know your enhancements will get you where you want to be with your E55, but for the rest of us that subscribe to you I thought I'd mention this in case others noticed they don't like how their transmission shifts while getting on the freeway and other fast acceleration.
Keep up the great work on your vids, Alex. You da man!

Alex, resetting the adaptation data in DAS is TOTALLY DIFFERENT than using the accelerator pedal/key reset procedure. The key and pedal trick only resets the driving habit adaptation, the DAS reset deletes all the adaptation data that compensates for the hydraulic circuit flow, such as piston filling time! You HAVE to run the adaptation procedure in DAS in order to make sure the transmission computer adapts piston fill times to the new valve body.

There's a specific procedure for adapting the shift timing when you replace internal parts or the tcu. You need sds or similar. You have to erase EGS adaptation and drive the car a specific way, while maintaining specific load variables in each gear, then let it idle for 10min to save the values to the tcu. This sets timing for slack in clutch packs and solenoid actuation differentials.
This is the problem with translated manuals. They also call what was done here "Adaptation". But, that is only for driving style adaptation. Does nothing to adapt to new parts really.

Really enjoyed this real world assessment. I have a 2005 E55 (200,000 km) which I love. In everyday use I value the massive torque more than I miss the sharp handling of its rivals. It has some modest 'enhancement' - extra intercooling capacity to help with cooling the intake charge. It produced 485 bhp and 535 lbs ft of torque on a recent dyno test. Very good numbers for a 16 year old car. I love the way it can pass itself off as nothing more than a very slightly over dressed Hamburg taxi - a real Q car. One gripe - the indicator (turn signal) stalk sits at 8.00 o'clock rather than the normal 10.00 o'clock - which takes some getting used to. The standard Hardon Karmann hi fi is excellent - not something that any reviews ever comment on, but given the part that it plays in the overall enjoyment it should not go unacknowledged. I paid $7400 for it 18 months ago (in Dubai). Spectacular bangs per buck. Costs are simply standard consumables. The engine really is unburstable and is the beating heart of the car.

Wow, nice valve body, the converter lock up could be worn, and kyb valve could be causing the lack of comfort, performing adaption with star diag, might also improve the shift quality

I agree about the slow shifts; my ‘05 CLK55 shifts horribly slow. When u use the paddle shifters, it’s hilarious waiting for the response. As for the mod, I wouldn’t want the harsh downshifts as a trade-off.

Keep us up to date on whether the 'transmission jerk' changes once you have it for a bit longer. I'd love to get some more performance out of my beast but I'm not willing to sacrifice my comfort entirely yet.

I guess you need to run the adaptation program after the reset. I did this on my 722.9 and it makes a complete difference regarding both upshifting and downshifting. I tried not to run the adaptation and was never able to get the 2-3 upshift smooth until I ran the adaptation. This makes me to believe the TCU doesn't really learn the shifting profile much by itself.

thanks so much I have money to do one performance mod at the moment to my 2001 clk55 and this would be a cheap alternative to tuning and header or an lsd but would provide my car with a useful transmission and similar results to my 0-60.

I've got the Eurocharged TCU. In comfort or sport, it's not much different from stock. In manual mode, it's almost perfect. I've gone sideways on the 1-2 upshift a few times, which is hard to do with 295 ps4s tires.

I drive ML55 AMG and the transmission is sooo slow, so yeah, totally agree here. Sometimes it "forgets" to downshift, so I have to let go of the gas and floor it to "remind" the transmission it has to downshift lol.

I had a e55 and it was such a great car i just couldn’t stand the sluggish gearbox. I always drove it manual mode and since it didn’t shift as fast as a dct or i should say Mercedes mct, i would let off the throttle, up shift and hit the throttle again as if it was a manual transmission car and based off the sound, some people would pull me over and asked if i had swap my transmission to a manual and i would say “nope it’s just how i drive it. As far as downshifting, since it’s pretty slow, when i downshift, i wait about a second or so and then hit the throttle to rev match and my downshifts were crisp.

After a while, you do forget that the valve body has been upgraded. I've got a modified one behind my 1JZ with the A340 transmission. For daily use, it is firmer initially, but then you just sort of accept it. They are a worthwhile upgrade for slow shifting autos 100%. Kickdown and takeoff makes a huge difference

After you have driven the car for a while and the transmission adapts the down shifts (while going slow ex. coming to a stop) will smooth out a great deal to a more stock like shift with that valve body.

    Alex,
if you look at the main reason why those cars were made is to cruise at a high speed with a comfortable ride & luxury, I believe "which I may be wrong" they didn't aim to drag or track those AMG cars expecting a performance like a Porsche! so you won't need fast shifting for that main reason, it's just a modern era when Mercedes shifted their game to a sporty loud cars along with people mindset as well, and nobody know their games like Mercedes does, I have a CL55 with M113K & 722.6 and can't complain about the way its made from the factory, it's just deliver when I need it to, keep the good work sir and that T-Shirt is totally LEGIT ;)

My friend has a 2006 Charger RT with the 722.6 and it’s a decent transmission. Does shit pretty slow, but in manual mode you can get it to chirp second gear. My early 722.9 isn’t very good either tho, it’s extremely smooth but doesn’t shift much faster than the 22.6. But, the gears are MUCH closer together which helps with acceleration. My family’s 2015 C300 with the 7G+ is probably my favorite trans besides the ZF8. The 7G+ shifts so hard it will chirp going into second and shifts like a dual clutch. I love it. But in eco or comfort it’s smooth af.

Hi, I installed one of these valvebody and experiencing some weird shift issues. I did the adaptation with star. At first, the gears were firmer from 1-2, but 3-4th gear it lunges forward.
Others have said it takes awhile for it to adapt even after the star adaptation. Now its been over a few days and the gears seem to smooth out a bit, but occasionally the harsh 3-4th comes back. Another thing is that when you put the gear in "C/comfort" mode and going thru the gears from a stop, there was a delay in shifts like it was slipping and when it when into gears it was a harsh engagement. Now to all the others who have installed this have the same issues? Or did i get a defective unit? Do i need to keep driving it and let it adapt some more?
