    For those complaining that the formula is wrong, HE IS NOT. He is adding the halogen and subtract the nitrogen from the hydrogen. It is the same thing on other websites and the text book.
    2n + 2 - (H + x - N) /2 is the same as the other forumals if you open the bracket
    2n + 2 - H - x +N /2 which is rearranged as
    2n + 2 + N - H - X /2

    For some reason when I was calculating these to draw the structures, I always got some weird number like 15. After watching this video, I finally understand and it makes drawing the structures so much faster. As always, thank you for your videos. I've been using them for calculus I and general chemistry, and now I continue using them for calculus II and organic chemistry ^^

    For this playlist i have reached up to this one . Don't delete any video I'm following like a real student ,going through every problem ,concept ,revision . As a student i can understand how much u studied harder in your time holy shit u should start providing online classes.

    Hi, do you have a video where you explain the situation when you are given the formula and you are asked to find a possible structure that represents the IHD value?

  • @uchennaomereji109

    The formula is actually correct. When we take for instance Nitrogen, it should be added directly without bracket just like what other websites have, but using bracket you need to subtract it. When you open the bracket it is the same as adding it directly. This applies to halogens. For example, C4H3N gives 2×4+2-(3+1)/2 = 3
    Or 2×4+2-3-1/2 =3. It all depends on the depends on the bracket.

    HI, thanks a lot for your videos. They have extremely useful for me. I just have a tip: we add one for the Nitrogen and Phosphorous instead of subtracting one, we subtract only in case of halogens!
    This is the formula we study: IHD= 2C+2+N-H-X/2 .

    In minute 8:52 where you talk about the Benzene Rings having Double Bonds... Don't they equal to 3 and not 4 since each Double Bond is equal to 1 and Triple Bonds are equal to 2?

    • @pot.8327
      @pot.8327 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      3 double bonds + the benzene ring itself which is 1 = 4

    Aren't halogens suppose to be subtracted because they could only form one bond ???

    • @TheOrganicChemistryTutor
      @TheOrganicChemistryTutor  8 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      They should be added to the number of hydrogen atoms because they form a single bond just like a hydrogen atom. Adding a chlorine atom to a molecule takes the place of a hydrogen atom so you should add 1 in place of the lost hydrogen atom. On the other hand, nitrogen likes to form three bonds. If you replace a hydrogen with a nitrogen atom, the nitrogen atom will bring it two more hydrogen atoms in the form of -NH2. That's why you should subtract 1 from the number of hydrogen atoms. You lost one hydrogen atom when it was replaced by -NH2 but you gained two new ones. -1 + 2 = 1. To compensate for the extra hydrogen, you should subtract 1 from the total number of hydrogen atoms to get the appropriate IHD value. I hope that helps :)

    Hey buddy your information is wrong and youre misleading students. Your last answer was wrong, but more importantly your equation is off. Nitrogens are +1 and Halogens are -1!!!!
    The equation should be (2C+2+N-X-H)/2 !!!! Please upvote so this can be seen!!! Good luck to you all!!

    • @Tough2mac

      Do you even math? 2(n)+2-(H+X-N)/2= (2C+2+N-X-H)/2 your saying he is wrong but you wrote the same thing he said.... your supposed to know the theory and the math will fall in line but you sir have it backwards.

  • @JonMacCaffrey
    @JonMacCaffrey 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Halogen is pronounced with a soft a. Like in the word "apple" Halogen or hælədʒən is pronounced Hal- (like the name Hal) -o- (with a long O like in the word rope) and then -gen (with a soft g and soft e like in the word gem). Your HEYlogen was driving me insane. Why would you say it like that? Haven't you heard people saying it correctly like a million times when taking chemistry courses?
