Fixing Common Shooting Problems | Missing Left

- I often tell students that a pistol is the dumbest weapon ever designed. Do I mean that literally? Not really. What I mean is that there is nothing natural or intuitive about it. In order to effectuate the principles of a good grip, for example, one must learn how to place the hands on the grip in certain ways and tense/relax certain parts of the hands in ways that do not feel natural or comfortable to most (until you get used to it).
Pulling a trigger seems like a no brainer to a lot of beginner shooters but we all know that’s not the case.
In order to correct Core Skill problems for shooters we first have to diagnose what the root of the problem is, as there are different factors that can lead to similar results (missed shots).
In this video we address one of the most common problems experienced by pistol shooters of all skill levels: Shooting left (for a right-handed shooter). In correcting this mistake, we take a two-pronged approach. One part is solving the actual error, and the other is counteracting the mistake with the control hand (support hand).
Typically (assuming sight alignment is correct) the root of the problem is that the shooter is not “pushing” the trigger straight back and is unknowingly moving the entire gun in that direction and they are not isolating the motion of the trigger finger from the sympathetic squeeze of the rest of the fingers in the shooting hand.
The support hand has a crucial role in correcting this as well. If the control hand (non-shooting hand) is placed correctly on the frame of the gun and is applying enough consistent pressure during the shot a bad trigger pull will not move the gun offline as much.
I have seen quite a few instructors tell students that the problem can be fixed only by applying more pressure to the control hand. It does help but it is not the actual solution. Think of it as treating the symptoms to a disease without actually curing it. Wouldn’t it be better to do both and be that much healthier?

You know what pisses me off? I'm a retired officer and I've always shot low and left and I was always told that I just needed to do more dry fired and that I was jerking the trigger. Never was I given instruction this valuable. Even for my distance shots they just told me to use KY windage. I'm looking forward to using these techniques.
Glad to help
Same here man, I was missing low and left and an old friend of mine told me to use Kentucky windage…😂 He said just aim high and right a little. I’ve heard people say squeeze the hell out of the pistol and I’ve heard people say don’t squeeze the pistol…😭 I’m about to just keep trying new shit for myself and the hell with what everybody else says…😂 I taught myself how to shoot a rifle like that before the internet so what’s the difference.
Did anyone ever tell you to adjust your sights or install a red dot. If you have a group to the left, just move your rear sight to the right. It’s that easy. If you’re shooting low then readjust your sight picture or get new sights. Forget KY windage.
@@vtxdaryl I bench shoot all of my guns to get them zeroed and I don’t want to adjust my sights to correct a bad habit. I’d rather focus on what I’m doing wrong vs drifting my sights to make up for bad technique.
@@vtxdaryl Yeah I realize that. The rear sight was definitely off from the factory. I think I’m gonna buy some nicer sights. Maybe some tritium sights or something… I’m just learning, I’ve owned a few pistols but I’m really trying to become a better shot now. The two I owned before were just crappy little pistols. One was a .32 ACP and the other was a .25… Thanks for your input, I realized what was wrong shortly after I made this comment.
OMG! What a great instructor. Not only can he walk the walk, but he can talk the talk. Very few instructors are the complete package. Wow!
I can first hand attest that Imri is the best firearms instructor I've had the benefit of training with. That's with 18 years in law enforcement. In just a small amount of time 1v1 with him he quickly analyzed a couple of bad habits with the appropriate fixes to get me shooting at a higher level. TR team is awesome.
Can't believe such high quality info is free. Thank you Imri, Karl, and everyone else on the TR team.
Very good video, instructions and actually showing why we shoot left as right hand shooters. I have struggled for years with this. Finding the proper grip, right amount of pressure, not flinching or anticipating the shot. Keep up the great work SGM and TR family
I took the pistol course with TR and was humbled by all my bad habits. Recommend getting in person instruction. It takes a lot of dry fire and range time to break bad habits...it's worth it.
I pull right dependong on which pistol I use. For sure going to practice this at the range next time i go.
Thank you so much for that distinction about the "control" hand. This more than anything is going to make a difference in my shooting. I thought I had it covered with no gaps but what I just learned was my control hand was not high enough. I just tried it (with an unloaded pistol) and can feel a tremendous difference in how I have better control of the pistol. I'll be heading to the range soon!
Glad to help
Awesome job walking through both the issues and the solutions. Super helpful.
Outstanding video. Very well explained.
Besides, the more I know about Randy, the more I notice what a great, nice hero he is.
Glad you enjoyed it
I watched this video this morning before going to the range and I can confirm 100% that I hit my targets like never before! Great video and will share with my fellow shooting buddies. Great job!
After watching this a few times I went to my range and put about 300 rounds down at different distances, after year's of being a left of center shooter I was literally blown away by the difference just in the first magazine, un-fing-believable! all these years of struggling melted away, now to retrain my burnt in bad habits, I can't thank you guys enough, outstanding. 👏👏👏👏👍🏻
Glad it was helpful
Very informative and super helpful. I saw an immediate change after applying this advice at the range, thank you.
5 shots is officially the "Chad Hultsiezer drill" shoot 4 shots than..one more. 😊😢 awesome having Randy demonstrate the drills 👍🏻
Be nice... we miss Chad.
How is Chad?
@@TacticalRifleman same here...😔
Missed this video somehow. Exactly some of the things we learned at Gunrunner pistol. And, it works just like that. I was shooting left and saw the same results as in this video. Super valuable info here. Thanks TR family! Tim
Thanks so much. That is exactly what I Really need to improve. I have been working on it and found this Video. I will try this tomorrow morning as soon as the range open. You have a new sub sir.
Great instructional video. Detailing what to look for and how to fix problems.
Thanks for watching!
Came for the tips, stayed for the Randy :3 Really great video. This stuff may seem obvious to many here, but I know when I was learning I was helped by these same kinds of tips. You packaged it in a nice, easy to share way too. Thank you kindly!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video, seems to be what I'm fighting the most, shooting left. Love that P09, which happens to be my edc. When I want to work on trigger pull, my target of choice is a piece of paper with one vertical sharpie line that I really concentrate on. gêt the left to right down, and the north to south comes much easier.
Learn a lot. Very clear on instruction and see the result before and after.
Man that last run was tooo clean! 😂 thanks for the pointers for real !! Great demonstration
Thanks for video , getting the left/ control hand and the force needed was helpful
You're welcome!
Thank you for fixing me. Went to range after I watched this and was shooting 100% better. Will have to review this video before range trips for a while so I can get this ingrained.
Excelente aula! Parabéns!
Awesome! Excellent video! Randy and Imri thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This really helped! Appreciate you doing this.
Glad it helped!
This takes me back to April in Grandview TX. Thanks Imri!!!!!
Instantly subscribed. Awesome stuff!!!!
Welcome aboard!
Excellent video. I have been with many instructors and I didn’t fix my problem till watching many videos. I caught it watching a seal instructor. I worked armed security and not one of them could explain it. Great instruction and it makes so much sense to call your opposite hand your control hand. For me it was all my control hand and grip.
I would love to see more videos like this.
Glad it helped
Very informative, thank you!
Awesome Video! I'm work with my 15 year old Daughter on her Trigger Control and this will definitely help. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
@@TacticalRifleman 👍🏼
Great video. Thanks for the lesson.
Glad you liked it!
Nice job Randy!
Ohh so helpful. I see why my shots are going left. Time to go to the range and practice those fixes. 🙏
Thank you for the professional training AND the targets…they printed out perfectly.
Glad you like them!
This is great you discussed everything i do wrong ,taking it to the range . Thank you
not judging, love the video. It was just funny. "shoot 4 shots", 5 shots fired, 6 holes on the target :)
Nice one Imri! Thanks!
Thank you too!
Great video, Gents. Imri, you’re a legend
Thank you kindly
Awesome vid, earned a sub!
Thanks for the sub!
Good stuff 👍
Great tutorial. If you think about it the only moving part in the machine is the trigger finger, everything else you are stationary, as long as you're not shaking. I could show someone who has never held a gun how to line up the sights in a couple of minutes. How to pull the trigger without moving the gun is the trick.
One thing I do practice on at home is holding the gun still, without moving, both rifle and pistol. That is something you can do at home for free. I do that and dry fire and it has really helped me a lot. If you mounted a laser or a flashlight with a small enough beam, you could use that to see if you are moving when you pull the trigger. I'm definitely going to use what he showed us on supporting the gun better.
Good stuff as always.........
Outfookingstanding video! Thank you!!! How is Karl recovering?
All good. Slow but good.
I am left handed but shoot right. I am low and to the left. I feel that these tips will really help. Thank you!
Best explanation to date thank you!?
Glad it was helpful!
I enjoyed this teaching I am instinctive shooter but the trigger pull i think will help me might have to try it out tomorrow thanks
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
As you addressed early in the video, I consider horizontal (left/right) misses to be potentially of little defensive value. Vertical stringing of multiple shots that remain on the target center line (spine) are still likely to be anatomically signifiicant hits. Very good video containing helpful corrections for a commom shooting error. Thank you.
Yes, and if you really pull up really badly, if you are centered perfectly it would end up just being a headshot. If you are several inches to the left it will be a complete miss if you're way high.
@@actionjksn I'm going to take your comment as intentional sarcasm. If it is not and you can't keep your groups on a full size silhoulette, I suggest you restart your training at "This is a handgun" and go from there.
Super cool. Thanks guys
Glad you enjoyed it
I'm a new pistol shooter, after watching this incredible video, I can hardly wait to get to the range.
Thank You Sir.
Just a follow-up,thank you Imri.
Went to the range this morning, following your instructions to Randy.
My shooting improved 100% @ 25 foot mark with a dozen in the black most in the 9&10
moved out to the 50 foot peg 20 shots 18 on the paper 9 in the black most in the 7&8 ring only 1 in the 9. using 25 yard bra targets.
About me 76 years old with cataracts waiting for a referral from my doctor for that.
shooting a p320c stock sights that a could not see to well the range lighting was terrible.
Thanks again before today I was lucky to even hit the 50 foot target.
All them in the bull I'm exited.
Now I have something to work on😁
I shoot consistently low left…This is the first video I have watched that makes sense to me, and I have watched a shitload…can’t wait to get to the range and try this out…
Two things using the old weaver grip with support hand index finger tip around front of trigger guard will eliminate these grip induced issues. Second ball and dummy drills will identify flinch if that is an issue.
It's a bit hard to fit my support hand index finger around the front of my trigger guard, because that space is occupied by my weapon light. Still, a good tip for those not using lights.
Great info. I def need to work on my technique!
You can do it!
Yep every Du$&a$$ needs work. Lol
Damn, you guys just wont let that go... I didn't call him out by name... ish
🤣
Keep going guys. From Argentina.
EXCELLENT!
Glad you think so!
Very good stuff
Glad you think so!
The perfect video for me THANKS
By the way I watched Randy’s little Swiss Army knife and I thought „ what a Bada$$”
Thank you Imri. What knife is that you have on your battle belt?
Randy have the same problem while shooting fast both in the beginning and in the end of the video: non isolation of the trigger finger. It's clear that there is a LOT of movement on the thumb of his right hand. So he is gripping the handgun harder when pressing the trigger faster.
Target panic is huge in archery where the human body influences so much more variables in the bow and the shot process. its interesting to see firearms instructors starting to implement training to reduce target panic.
Thank you!!!!
You're welcome!
Great learned a butt load. Thanks.
Amazing video! Hey, who doesn't luv Randy and Imri videos?!?! Karl, in the livestreams you'll use the 1lb., 2lb., 3lb. count when talking trigger control - is this a similar technique?
Tactical rifleman is a beautiful institution for freedom, keep it coming!😎👍👍🍻
Yes
Great intro 👏
I'm glad you like it
Iike his form of training. You da man!
Is your gun a 19X or G45? Which type of oakley frame are those sunglasses Imri?
Great tips by the way 😂
Thank you guys for your continuous service to the American people..
Nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
4 Mo video and only 17,000 views. Great video about controlling each part of the grip and finger. Nice video.
Yep, TH-cam doesn’t share our videos because we promote safe firearm use.
@@TacticalRifleman interesting and unfortunate how the algorithm works. I’m here for support. I’ll keep watching more of your videos and thumbs upping them!
Info is needed. My main problem is due to an eye operation. I have great vision with both eyes but can no longer see the sights clearly. I need reading glasses. The sights are blurry causing a distraction since the target is clear. I was use to other way around. Any insight is welcome.
His shots are going high, not because he’s looking at the target but because he’s probably not looking at a precise point on the target. It’s okay to shoot “target focused” with irons.
Also, IMO learning to prep the trigger properly is WAY more important and applicable than “slowly pressing the trigger” and “letting it surprise you”
I'm always afraid if I press too hard with left thumb and hand on the side of the gun, I may stop the slide from properly going back and cause a jam in the firearm or it won't cycle the next round or something. Unjustified fear?
Why is Randy carrying a sword?
Nice
Thanks
The trigger finger riding along side of the frame is so me. So that’s bad? I have issues shooting left
It can be. If you can create a small gap between the frame and your trigger finger, it can help prevent pushing the frame when you squeeze the trigger.
That's some damn good info 🇺🇸🧂🧂
Why i my first show spot on the center, but every other shot drifts no matter how accurate I aim?
Dam it Randy! 😅😅😅
question, why not adjust the sights right n hit where u want with your natural grip?
Adjusting sights outside of center will change your impact based upon distance. So if you sight in at 10 yards, your shot at 10 feet will be off. But if you sight in at 10 feet and only shoot 10 feet you might be ok
@@nathanheckathorne8061 i thought it was my eyes, so i need to fix my grip?
What handgun is Randy using?
CZ p09

Great video we need to get Randy a new weapon light tho hahah.
How hard was it for Randy to shoot that bad
WOW......
How do I get a T-Shirt

Are those zamberlan boots imri? I’ve wanted to try em but can’t quit buyin Solomons….
The fact that you have to keep buying them should be reason enough to upgrade sir.

Can nvgs detect someone using thermal?
Not that I’ve seen. I have high end PVS-14 and military issued thermal and I’ve actually tested this quite a bit.
Possibly, if you are behind them, you may see visible light escaping from the eye cup. From the front, there is zero visible signature. However, the front objective lens, made of germanium, is polished and very reflective. So, theoretically, any stray IR or visible light ( think nearby street lights or car headlights) may reflect off of the lens and appear visible to your NVD. Hope this helps.TR
@@TacticalRifleman Thank you. Had been wondering if thermal would be the way to go for me and what vulnerabilities it would have, if any. 🗽 🇺🇸
@@Heywoodthepeckerwood thanks. Can you recommend a clip on that would work well with a 10x scope?
Hehe anatomical reasons
That was actually pretty effin tactical especially those laughs at the end 😂
