I could understand him making a comm badge when shapeshifting, but how exactly would it work? How would it functionally work, and how would it tie into the communication system? It just doesn't make sense to me. Would it apply to other technologies as well? If he shapeshifts a tricorder or phaser, would they work too?

@@jeffreyeggstein329 I think it's too complicated for him. He probably spent a month learning every single circuit in a comm badge to be able to create a functional one. Theoretically, there's nothing stopping him. They do explain at some point that a tricorder can't detect a changeling that turned into a tree, because for all intents and purposes they are a tree. They also explain they have to understand what they try to become to become the thing. For example, there was that one changeling that could turn into a body of gas. A comm badge probably has a pretty weak power source too, so there's no reason why he couldn't replicate one Presumably, he could turn into anything that doesn't need a massive energy output (let's say a phaser) so long as he understands how it works to the very last detail. Now, electronics are really complicated, and Odo seems to have average memory, and not photogenic, so I'd say it would take him a lot of practice to turn into any other machinery. The real reason, naturally, is that this is a sci-fi TV show and it is much more convenient this way, and considering how minor and unimportant this detail is, when we see that he can change his mass at will, he can move as a blob of goo for no particular reason whatsoever, doesn't seem to get any sustenance in any form (photosynthesis included), doesn't really seem to need any time to sleep (he is still aware while in his bucket, he's just contemplating his life choices), the writers just assume that the suspension of disbelief holds.
That's why protocol should be for the blood taker to immediately put the vial down on a table. That way if they're a changeling the entire vial will turn to ooze, not just the blood inside.

oooooh damn good one. though one would suppose, a changling that is trying to replace a crewmember should really have been clever enough to take the communicator (wouldnt want the person you captured to call for help, unless you conveniently forget that hes locked up and apparently capable of raising the blastdoors magically to expose his capture)

I think earlier in the series or episode there's an off handed comment Sisko fought in a Federation-Tzenkethi war. Imagine Sisko taking on those giant lizards.
I had figured out Bashir was fake while he was drawing blood, I thought he was doing it too slowly. Just like he was talking too slowly when he met Chief O'Brien at the beginning of the episode, and I had guessed right away he was a changeling only because I knew what the episode was about.
Hello Dominion, Cardassians??? The entire main crew of DS9 are away on a faux mission. Maybe now’s a good time to seize control of the station since a skeletal crew probably won’t be able to put up a good fight. Missed opportunity. Just saying.
2:21 Anyone else just now realize that Starfleet's self-destruct security measures are totally inadequate in the face of the changeling threat? All a changeling has to do is impersonate the captain's voice (and I guess handprint), both of which are trivial, and figure out the authorization code (probably easier than you'd think, considering they're a pain in the ass to memorize, they're likely written down somewhere). Then rinse and repeat for the first officer. No blood testing required.
Realistically with Changlings, nothing is impossible for them. You can't use keys because they can change into that, so trying to get a code out would be harder.
Well realistically speaking they couldn't replicate someone hand print with out a picture to study. Taking their form is easy, but that finer detail would be much more difficult
Considering Sisko has well established that Kira is his 1st officer they probably configured the Defiant's auto destruct codes accordingly. She might not be an official starfleet officer but I guess starfleet does recognize her place an authority.

DS9: Fingerprint verification and really similar codes Sisko: Sisko Alpha 1 Alpha Kira: Kira Beta 2 Beta Sisko final code: Sisko 15 Destruct VOY: Only requires the captains authorization. Janeway: Janeway pi 110 Seems starfleet doesn't like putting much thought into the one system that's literally meant to destroy their ships intentionally.

Dominion technology is more advanced than Starfleet’s. It shouldn’t be too difficult or take too long for them.

We’ll have to agree to disagree. But the approach the writers took created the most dramatic effect. I think we can agree on that.
