    Someone at the federation phaser design company decided phasers should have three settings: 1) tickle, 2) aggressive tickle 3) annihilate matter completely. They figured you don't really need more than that.

      @@eldarhighelfhealermiriella7653 how is that odd? A phaser is directed energy at a different frequency compared to plasma energies,. The collision of the two would cause interference by both energies' frequencies merging into one different from both, disrupting the target's energy systems.

      fireupontheearth the problem is if she can kill with a touch, she has to have the ability to do it when she wants to. Otherwise every person she inadvertently touched over the years would have died. Hard to stay covert when you keep leaving a trail of bodies. So anyone who tried to physically restrain her, she touches and they die. So Riker really didn't have a choice.

      The attempt to stun that failed then setting the phaser to kill is pretty standard, especially when you're dealing with someone with a lifelong ambition to murder the last of a family line with a microvirus. The narrative momentum of simply apprehending her would have kept her alive to attempt it again later.

The reason Picard is just sitting there, twiddling his thumbs while Riker kills the babe is because Patrick Stewart had to stay really still for the phaser effect not to be disrupted and be clear enough to see. I'd say it could be because of two things. One, Riker was trying to give her a chance to choose not to kill. Two, she was physically stronger to handle the stuns and didn't stun easily. You saw, Riker had the phaser set pretty high already the last time he stunned her. I've seen other people during the series hit with a stun blast of that brief a moment and get knocked out cold. She mentions her cells were altered and her aging slowed. I feel like that gave her an immunity to a lot of things, including the strength to absorb the stuns. Riker had to set the phaser to full blast to stop her. That usually doesn't happen for someone just standing there at close proximity. I'd go more with my second reason with a twist of the first.

      @pwnmeisterage 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Killing Yeoman Thompson (a cute young woman) instead of Lieutenant Shea (the large black man standing beside her) was obviously meant to subvert and shock audience expectations. It was the 1960s, it was national television, "family" television, and it was _Star Trek_ so it kinda promised to be an optimistically utopian fairy tale ...
      This scene was deliberately intended to be provocative. What if Thompson was instead shown standing alone? Her death would remain equally meaningless (she was just a guest star with a small role in a security redshirt) but it wouldn't have challenged the common social norms for the era, it wouldn't have upset as many people.

    To anyone saying he didn't have to vaporize her, keep in mind that he used the same blast on her the first time as he did that guy in the beginning. She shrugged it off, and even a higher setting that would normally knock someone out cold or possible kill them just winded her. They didn't know the full extent of what her alterations made her capable of. All they knew is that she carried a disease that killed on touch, her aging was slowed and she was heavily resistant to phaser fire. The first shot she took was meant to knock her out without killing her, the second to kill her but keep her body intact and the third to vaporize. Because the alterations she underwent left too many unknowns and normal precautions might have been useless, Riker was justified in vaporizing her.

    • @Pierreandandre
      @Pierreandandre 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If those guns are ever invented, imagine the type of technology that goes into them. They would be GPS tracked and everything. There would be no hiding anything. Everything would be logged and reported automatically in some way. Sure sure, "jailbreaking/hacking" the devices. I'm sure there would be a few cases of that happening here and there, but I doubt there would be as many. Much in the same there are cases of unsolved crimes with today's technology. There may always be a way to evade here and there occasionally, but there will always be a way to track and solve more often than not.

    • @evknucklehead
      @evknucklehead 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's also the fact that it doesn't completely eliminate every trace of the target. They still leave trace amounts of residual energy mixed with a few remnants of organic matter, as seen when Picard went missing during an undercover mission to track down some artifact thieves. Granted, he wasn't actually hit by a phaser at that point, but the same principles apply.

    Well, easier, better solution to the problem. Riker fires at the chick at the second to last setting which seems to produce pain anyway and she seems to be limited that way. Picard grabs the dude or dude increases the distance on his own towards Riker, outside the firing arc. "Riker to Enterprise two to beam up" and problem solved. In case they couldn't transport her.
    Or even easier, Riker beams down activates his communicator, says beam up my signal, throws his to the dude, dude get beamed up and then people talk it out like adults.

    That was awesome. Vaporize !

      *Not* awesome - she was so pretty and, although she did deserve to die for the previous murders, it wasn't for Riker to be judge, jury, and executioner.
      He simply could have grabbed her, no need to vaporize her.

    Granted there were non-lethal ways to handle this.
    But once we reached the point where Yuta was lunging at Chorgon, vaporising her was the best option because, stunned or dead, her presumably still-lethal-to-the-touch corpse would have fallen on Chorgan and killed him.
