  • In this video, Daiwa Steez AIR vs Aldebaran BFS (ENGLISH), Hobie-Wan Kenobi cast a 1/32oz jig and 0.8gr Daiwa Vega Spoon with the Daiwa Steez AIR TW and the 2016 Aldebaran BFS XG with Avail 16ALD15 spool. Two of the best BFS reel going head to head.
    With a 28mm spool, 9.1 gear ratio, TWS (T-Wing System) and other features, the Daiwa Steez AIR should be a top contender for the Ultimate Bait Finesse Reel. Will it be able to edge out the Aldebaran BFS with Avail spool? KTF (Karil Tuning Factory) also released a new spool for the Steez AIR.

    Hobie-Wan,
    Much credit to you transferring line reel to reel and out in the open. That is a minimum of 4 transfers for all 3 reels. Nice review, I enjoyed the rod comment especially from someone who makes their own.

    I like seeing the tests on water. Not only someone casting on a field. This shows me how the reel preform in a real fishing situation. Honestly, these reels feel pretty different from each other. I think there are good reasons to buy them as they compliment each other pretty well.

      When you get to upper echelon BFS reels (modded or stock), you are really splitting hairs regarding performance. I will say some are better at certain things than others. Like Reel A is good at short range pitching and Reel B is really good at distance casting. People also have preferences. I like a fast spool for streams. Others like a lot of control in tight situations.

      I like the Alphas AIR TW, regardless of price. It performs very well out of the box and, is less expensive than the other reels you mentioned. Could buy a Roro spool and still be less than the others. The stock spool is nice but, the Roro spools are great in it. I have a review video of the faster version. I have used the thicken model a few times too. Still a nice spool. Should be great for skipping Ned Rigs and such

    Hobie, just subscribed and am enjoying your videos. I know nothing about BFS, other than the videos I’ve watched, however I have years of experience using bait casting reels. I’d like to get a bfs reel for trout, small to medium streams, and one for lake fishing for bass. What do you recommend? Also would appreciate a recommendation for a rod for the stream types I will be fishing. Thanks

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Welcome aboard!!! For BFS reels, there are many ways to do it. You can buy a BFS reel and an aftermarket spool to use one reel to cover both bases.
      If using a dedicated reel for both, I suggest the SLX BFS or Curado BFS for bass. No upgrades needed when bass fishing because of the size lures. The Dobyns Sierra Ultra Finesse BFS rod is a great finesse bass rod. Has light tip for casting Shakeyheads and such yet, still has a backbone to control fish (can see it with the Curado BFS in a review of the Curado BFS I did).
      For trout, a reel with a better spool such as the Alphas AIR TW will perform better for trout fishing. Casts lighter lures and also casts flatter (important short range casting around brush).

      @@HobieWanKenobi Thanks for getting back to me so.quickly. I actually ordered a 20 Alphas Air that I thought I would use for bass and a second lighter spool, from Robo that I thought I would use for trout. I have a rod for ned fishing but am looking for a good trout rod. It’s possible I might order from Mudhole and build my own. The Tsurinayo that you suggested doesn’t seem to be in stock. Any other suggestions.

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not hear any odd sounds on the cast. Is your cast control knob too loose? You can also try putting a small amount of oil on bearings that rotate with the spool and the spool shaft.

    I need to go to Hobie-Wan BFS school... I want to get one of my BFS reels set up for control in tight quarters for trout fishing. I can’t imagine placing that tiny spoon accurately with what I’ve got currently.

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome anytime!!! The 12 Aldebaran BFS is more of a finesse "bass" reel. There are some aftermarket spools out there that are super light and shallow for the 12 Aldebaran BFS.

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HobieWanKenobi Was thinking about swapping out the spool to something shallower and adding a clicker drag. If I did that, I feel it would be a great Brown Trout reel. I don't really need to go lower than 1/16oz so I feel it should work fine.

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FishAnything Everyone has different needs. Most spools I see for the 12 Aldebaran BFS are pricey, like 150 bucks. At that point, could pick up a Scorpion BFS or 1st gen Alphas AIR for just slightly more and, gives you another reel.
