This drink inspired Dave Asprey's Bulletproof Coffee, which consists of coffee, mct oil (or coconut oil) and butter. Dave recommends using grass fed unsalted butter. Kerrygold makes some that is pretty widely distributed. Not only is the grass fed unsalted butter much healthier for you, but it greatly improves the flavor. I would strongly recommend the substitution.
Fantastic series. Even though I can't consume the majority of the beverages for religious reasons, I just adore learning about other cultures and their traditional drinks. The excellent production quality, music, and info tidbits make it a can't-miss for me.
Mormons, for example, do not drink any hot beverage, other than herbal teas. So no black tea, coffee etc... Or at least this is what I've been told by a friend who is Mormon.
Congrats to Tibetan Butter Tea for winning viewer's choice. May we still see the other drinks in 2014? I'd love to see Thirsty For's take on halo-halo.
Tried this and it was delicious! The only thing I would change is to reduce the salt to 1/2 or less of the suggested amount, especially if using salted butter. The pu-erh really adds depth to the drink, and I recommend using Kerrygold butter - super rich and creamy! Next time I'm going to try making the Chaku.
This is a really great series. I love the way it is shot, the music, all the odd bits of trivia. I look forward to the upload every Sunday. I am so glad you will be back in 2014.
If you ever go to Tibet, those butter sculptures are pretty cool. They stink for sure, but there's a lot of workmanship put into them. Plus, the rooms where they're kept are often the only air-conditioned rooms you can find for miles.
This has been such an enjoyable series to watch. From the unique music , to the unusual ingredients, I have learned so much. Thank you for broadening my horizons and Happy Holidays to you and Yours.
In Tibet they use a fermented tea block very similar to pu-erh tea (which is Chinese), but it's not found anywhere else. On a tour in western Sichuan (which is full of Tibetan people and culture) they tried to get us to buy it, which I wanted to, but it was about $100 a block and it was sold by 20 blocks. It's also really good without butter, milk, and salt, sort of jujube flavor. Also you can drink it before sleeping because I heard boiling a long time removes a lot of caffeine. (not sure if it's true)
+TeddysCooking The only downside of Tibetan tea is that it's extremely high in fluoride (the same stuff added to toothpaste), which is not harmful in reasonable quantities, but in the amount that it's consumed in Tibet leads to chronic health problems due to flouridosis.
Thanks for giving a glimpse into our culture. This was a great video. Please continue making more videos on different cultures' food and drinks. Happy Holidays from a Tibetan! ^_^
Shocked that there are no comments about this, but the video misstates how much water you need to boil: the recipe says 4 cups while the video says 2 cups. My friends noticed this discrepancy early on, and decided to go with the video. What we ended up with was comparable to creamy seawater. I know we probably should have followed the written recipe, but it's still a pretty big blunder.
Well, did you add 2 teaspoons of salt or 2 tablespoons? Seriously, Thirsty For..., how is it that your videos are so well produced but you can't get the ingredients and/or instructions (usually the ingredients) consistent between the videos and the recipes? How are we supposed to make the drinks we see taste like they're supposed to taste if we can't figure out the proper amount of things? Other than that not-so-minor quibble, great job!
alder128 Yeah, "2 TBP" salt and "2 TBSP" butter in the video is really confusing, and would take the creator like 18 seconds to check before uploading.
Hey guys, thanks for this awesome season! I am really looking forward to the next one! This episode reminds me of my grandmothers story when she and my grandfathers were making a journey in Mongolia - they were drinking this same tea, with yak butter. She remembers it as tasty and really useful, also because of the cold and the fat which serves like a lipbalm. Thank you for making me remember this story! Have nice holidays and see you next time!
I loved this series! Was so interesting to learn about so many different countries, new ingredients and the many acquired tastes for some unique drinks! Can't wait to give each and every one a go!!
i love thirsty for!! so glad that this was the winning drink. i guess the butter is kinda like an alternative to the modern whip cream/halfandhalf that we put into our hot beverages
I am SO happy they did this butter tea and not butterbeer. I feel like there are enough "recipes" for butterbeer (if it can even be called that... it's just cream soda with a hint of butterscotch flavoring to it, you don't really need instruction for that). The latter drink is just too overrated, overdone, and not all that interesting. Mind you, I'm a Harry Potter fan myself and I'm saying this. I want to learn about something new and interesting from a culture that doesn't get enough notoriety. To me, this drink being chosen for the season finale represents what Thirsty For is mostly about! Anyway, looking forward to the next season! I hope Eric and his crew enjoy their break -- they've earned it. :)
I have tried it once.. and it is awesome to taste... 2-3 cups and you stomach will feel filled for the whole day... yak milk is pretty filling like goat milk
I make something similar in the morning before running off for the day. I started a ketone diet (aka low carb) to help with seizures and metabolism issues and needed to add more fat to my daily diet. Something other than meat and cheese as that gets old very fast. I melted 2 T coconut oil in my hot tea and decided it looked undrinkable. I decided to put it in the blender. While it was in the blender I thought to add one scoop of low carb protein powder then blend on high and my favorite morning drink was born. I use different types of caffeinated tea and choose a flavored protein powder based on the tea I chose that morning--either chai or vanilla. Now I add 2 scoops of protein powder and 3 T of coconut oil and blend for a full minute, but it's good and filling and gives me a decent amount of calories for the day. I haven't tried it with puerh, but have been considering it because I love puerh with cream. I might also have to try butter and salt some day too. :)
when i was little, i remember reading a book set in Tibet around a hundred years ago and being totally intrigued by the mentions of butter tea. (I forget the plot and the name of the book but i remember the tea!) so thanks for this....i am going to have to make it and try it after all this time wondering!
Yak Butter Tea seems to vary from region to region. The YBT I had in Tibet was much more palatable than that which I had in Nepal, which was too greasy and too salty. The tea is very suitable to the climate and living conditions of the Tibetan Plateau. Thanks for sharing. Excellent videography, by the way.
"unlike black tea" referring to Pu-Erh? No, tea purveyors have continually explained to me that Pu-Erh tea is black tea, and the other tea most commonly called "black" is considered Red Tea by tea purveyors and tea connoisseurs.
I never thought i'd say this but- Im crying... this was an addictive series (not that i could even make these, except for some of my traditional drinks shown here) Plus you Apple Cider advert in early 2013, got me to hit the tastemade's subscribe button. See you in 2014!
if you guys are in Jackson Heights, Queens NY, the Tibetan restaurants and food trucks sell Tibetan Butter Tea for only a dollar, and they are delicious!
That was very nice...quite informative! "Butter Tea" is an item in the Playrix game "Township". Since all of the game's "recipes" are very loosely based on actual dishes and beverages, I figured butter tea had to be a thing somewhere in the world; and, so it is!
I'm watching your videos and realising just how much of the world's cultural variety is unknown to me... Traditional food might be the best way to introduce a culture...
Ah this video and the music is so cute, but my amala usually just tosses in seemingly random amounts of butter, milk, salt, and water. I think pu-erh is actually chinese because I've never heard of it and I don't think I've ever seen my parents or relatives use it. Happy holidays from a Tibetan and free Tibet!
the quality of these videos is just insane.... all this for a just a drink.... all this effort! respect!
Would love to try a cup of this, great video!
Mark Wiens you shouldn't have missed that tea while in Boudha, around the place where you had laphing and thukpa :D ...
Hi Mark. Gotcha. :p
I searched this up after at first being interested when you drank it and afterwards watching another video in which some youtubers drank the same tea
@@mikailshakes4514 it is easy to make. I take it to work and Keep me warm. I work for Usps.

What religion does not allow its people to drink tea?
She’s probably talking about the dairy in it
What religion forbidds dairy consumptions ?
Lol. What bs. None of the ancient religions disallow diary
Mormons, for example, do not drink any hot beverage, other than herbal teas. So no black tea, coffee etc... Or at least this is what I've been told by a friend who is Mormon.

I think we should thank you guys for taking the time and love to appreciate the different cultures of this world.
This is probably my favourite series on YT!! Please bring it back soon!
this is the best food channel I have ever come across
interesting and authentic recipes along with matching background score...
guys great job...

Amazing show series. .. worth sharing. .. One of my favorites
My favorite show on Tastemade!! Keep up the great work!!
I've used butter in coffee as creamer and blended it, it turns out pretty delicious.

Tibetan tea is called Jha Bhoe Cha. Very nicely done you guys. This video made me want to go make me some Tibetan tea in this wintery weather.
