I spoke to a gaming comission in Canada, EAs excuse didn't work in that province. However the representative believed action could only be taken against companies with local servers as it is an online service. Though I pointed out the games themselves are being sold locally. So we'll see how things shake out but here contests with rewards that cannot be converted into cash _are_ still regulated.
Mark my words, one day EA headquarters will be engulfed in flames and there will be millions of gamers singing in a circle around it like the Whos in How the Grinch Stole Christmas
"I've learned this much: take what you can, when you can!" "Then you've learned nothing!" This exchange between Jenner and Justin from the animated movie The Secret Of NIMH could very well sum up how modern AAA publishers like EA think and how most people react to their bullshit.
I bought a book at the library, but some of the pages were missing. The only way I'm able to get them is by purchasing a set of pages at random from the librarian, most of which the book I bought already has. I just want to read the full book!
More biblically it'd be to Mammon, who is the embodiment of greed. But yeah, denying they ever did wrong is a politician's go-to as well. Maybe they studied at the same colleges?
"a game to exploit this five percent" pretty much nailed it with that line. The kind of gamers that are buying these loot boxes are the kind in which, for example, you make a new friend and head over to his/her place, you notice they have a gaming console and say "oh you have a PS4? what do you have for it" their shelf isn't full of games like most of us (sometimes spanning generations) it's Fifa, and maybe a FPS game or two.
Something important to note as well : "5% of the players are making half the revenue" : we are talking about millionaires or near it here, when you consider the annual revenue. This means that in order to make the other half, there has to be a significant amount of "low revenue" (in comparison) persons engaging in that gambling. Persons who are likely to spend unhealthy amount compared to their income, or at the very least compared to what they get in return. I do not know the numbers, but this can only mean that the total amount of players engaging in this gambling has to be closer to 25-50 % of the player base, all of them getting f*cked by a system that wish them nothing but harm, regardless of the amount invested.

I agree with this 1000000% as long as money comes in these companies will never stop gamers we can't take this bullshit anymore fight with your wallets
As an avid FIFA player for many years, each new release made it harder and harder to get the best players you want. Chances of getting TOTW or POTM cards or even special event cards got less and less. I never really spend more than $50 total over 5 FIFAs on Ultimate Team and they've always been a waste. When I did get good cards, it's because I saved up my coins and literally just bought the cards off the market and traded in a few players for the money. I haven't really gone back into fifa since FIFA20 so i've been out of the cycle for now.
Depends on what your definition of "push" is. If by "push" you mean pressure you, annoy you, and highly incentive you to buy in-game purchases through the inherent game design of the product, then yes, they do definitely try to "push" you into spending money, lol.
Yong, i just wanna thank you for keeping up on this issue. Its clear you care about it. As someone with very addictive behavior (esp with spending.) i'm glad that theres folks like you out there watching out for folks that can fall into bad ways like this. Love ya, man.
Here in the UK, fruit machines in bars often use 'tokens' special coins that can only be used in the machine they came from, or at least a machine from the same supplier. Many years ago, some bars would allow you to pay for your drinks using the tokens. There is always a way to 'cash out' virtual currency into real world value.
"if there's even a one percent chance that EA is doing something scummy, we have to take it as absolute certainty...and we have to destroy them" Batman probably
Thank you so much for continuing to cover this issue. It helps keeping the awareness up and the problem in the public eye, where it needs to be for real change to happen.
Every single reasonable excuse of theirs failed so they're trying new and often stupid ones to see if they work. Looks like they did, because some people still see those excuses as good and true somehow.
If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times: the only way to erase this plague for good is to let the AAA gaming industry crash again. Too many AAA studios have resorted to predatory tactics in order to cover their unsustainable business practices. The minute you outlaw predatory microtransactions, the entire industry goes belly-up. This is exactly why the only AAA games I play are those that are completely microtransaction-free.
@@benjaminpeterson455 More importantly, the higher ups change. Right now EA is run by people who understand business, but have no love for the products they're selling. Just like Bethesda ever since Todd Howard entered the picture.
@@TG-ge1oh They understand business, but they don't understand creative business, or the video game business. Business knowledge and experience isn't actually all that transferrable. Put a packaged goods exec in charge of a video game company, and you get Activision - crank out a sure seller until it buries its nose in the ground and move on to the next "product"...until you run out of IP and developers. When companies in creative businesses start valuing "safe bets", they stagnate. Video games need a balance of business acumen and visionary idealism; if you're deficient in either, your company will fail, and that's the real bottom line.
@@falguard Couldn't agree more, my friend. What these companies are, is creatively bankrupt. We complain about our legal systems not comprehending what niche the video game media fills, but the truth is very few people actually do. The ones cranking these products out see them as just that, products. We need more intertextual studies in the field, explaining how games are similar to and differ from the rest of the entertainment industry. On the other hand, our literature, comic, televised and silver screen media suffer from the same symptoms, so I'm not sure what I'm hoping for at this point. I guess we need an Apple, a Sega, a Sony every generation to challenge the mainstream. We need them every generation, because every generation, last gen's innovators join the rank and file of mainstream.
Even internally EA pushes the devs towards monetization by tossing out feature briefs that don't make them more money directly. It's why traditional modes are all being shoved into ultimate team with the end goal being ultimate team is just the entire game and every mode uses the cards in some way.
You know how they could do a lot of this better? In all sports games really. Make them actual cards. Like when a new game comes out, have special edition card packs you can physically buy or order, and the cards you get inside have a code or something for you to scan and put them into your game. At least then you'd have some actual physical product in your hands. I still wouldn't like it, but it would be better than buying virtual card packs in a game that have no actual value or collectable worth.
The items that people receive via loot boxes and microtransactions (mostly the ones with artificial scarcity) holds extreme value in the same way that money still does and did whenever the gambling laws were first written. These virtual items are important to people and these companies exploit that in the most dishonest ways imaginable.
Unfortunately, by the time the law catches up, EA will already would have found another loophole to exploit. This is why it is very urgent for the lawmakers to regulate any loot boxes that can be obtained one way or another with real money.
This "We don't agree" argument reminds me of a comic i've seen years ago about a court case between a phone manufacturer and a normal family who has brought their fridge to court. The lawyer of the phone company hols up a phone and say "Well, your Honor, if you look at it from this angle and squint your eyes, the fridge and our phone look somewhat similar." And the judge says "Understandable. The fridge is hereby banned."
"We don't push people to spend in our games." That's about as true as me saying FIFA 21 is my game of the year.

Interesting how the spokesperson never actually *denied* that it was real.
“Nothing in the leaked document contradicts [our mission statement] in any way” sounds a lot like a denial to me.
i'm so disgusted i cannot put it into words properly, so i'm just leaving this comment for better engagement of this video.

The irony of the FIFA ad in this video isn't lost on me.
I played it for 10 years, and I could feel the game pushing me to do it. To break the repetitive cycle and make a jump in progress.
Something important to note as well :
"5% of the players are making half the revenue" : we are talking about millionaires or near it here, when you consider the annual revenue.
EA seems almost surreal, like an evil villainous company from a dystopian movie. It's bizarre.

@@TotalXPvideos sadly your right unfortunately as long as BS cooperation get the money they don't care
They actually said "We push people to make a blood sacrifice on surprise mechanics"
@Bishop Gray Then that would give the governments attention
"but we do just the opposite, we *pull* them into spending."
We don't push people, we just strong arm them.
Depends on what your definition of "push" is. If by "push" you mean pressure you, annoy you, and highly incentive you to buy in-game purchases through the inherent game design of the product, then yes, they do definitely try to "push" you into spending money, lol.
Hey, look at that downvote! Now we know 13 EA executives watch Yong!

Hey.

Yes! Bro! If only everyone had this viewpoint.
You could take almost every line that comes out of that awful company and do an entire video on why they are lying.

Man wtf happened to EA.. I grew up playing their games, so many memories. This is disgusting...
The only EA games I've ever cared about were the MySims ones (excluding MySims Kingdoms on the DS because that port sucks)
@@Hauntaku hey, i remember that! Just one year before they fell to the dark side if i recall.
That's exactly what a casino owner would say
You know how they could do a lot of this better? In all sports games really. Make them actual cards. Like when a new game comes out, have special edition card packs you can physically buy or order, and the cards you get inside have a code or something for you to scan and put them into your game. At least then you'd have some actual physical product in your hands. I still wouldn't like it, but it would be better than buying virtual card packs in a game that have no actual value or collectable worth.
Ea sports: it's in the lootboxes
EA Games: Gamble Everything
"It's not in the loot boxes, but it might be. Are you too chicken?"
The items that people receive via loot boxes and microtransactions (mostly the ones with artificial scarcity) holds extreme value in the same way that money still does and did whenever the gambling laws were first written. These virtual items are important to people and these companies exploit that in the most dishonest ways imaginable.
guys, this is happening with tons of games. as long as people are willing to pay, this stuff will continue to exist
Unfortunately, by the time the law catches up, EA will already would have found another loophole to exploit. This is why it is very urgent for the lawmakers to regulate any loot boxes that can be obtained one way or another with real money.
It's like they think their playerbase is stupid because they pay full price for the same game every year... hold up.
Anybody remember when in game-timers used to be seconds to minutes to hours, instead of minutes to hours to days...?
"Challenge Everything" indeed.
