Re-releases of the original Pokemon games (on the Virtual Consoles) with "Simulated" gambling (the Game Corners) that you absolutely CAN'T cash-out on, were rated T for TEEN. EA games where you CAN cash-out on are rated E for Everybody.
@@Rokabur You CAN'T cash out on them, yet you pay cash for them in the first place. The simulated gambling in those pokemon games did not require any form of real life money in order to experience them, yet loot boxes in EA games and such require real life money in order to obtain or open. It's disgusting that EA, Activision, and TakeTwo are acting like loot boxes aren't gambling when they know full well they are. They know people get addicted to them, and that's why they continue to utilize these egregious tactics because they make money off of the poor whales' addictions. At least with games like TF2, CSGO, and KF2 you can actually cash-out and even use that money to get things on Steam, thus reducing the need to have to use real life money in the first place. In EA's games that have loot boxes, you can't do that at all, meaning the stuff you get from lootboxes in them have no actual value to them at all and the lootboxes are like a black hole you keep throwing money at.
@Agent 005 and there are laws in place to protect people from predatory practices. Why can't loot boxes be one of the things that people (children even!) have some protection from?
Gacha games>EA games... both have loot boxes but only one stays for a long time. Also one doesn't cost 60 bucks up front cause it's free to play... some even entirely f2p if you can manage the grinding.
More like because of the law. If they straight up admit it then it will be regulated like it should be, affecting the accessibility that they are currently having. Whales and addict will spend money on it no matter what it is called, as long as they have their fill of dopamine opening shit.

I personally now 3 people who were heavily and negatively effected by FIFA here in Northern Ireland. 1st time was in secondary school (high school) we were 15 years old and a guy in my class spent £800 of his parents money on packs. Another boy in my year did the same thing and actually left the school shorty after as it caused serious problems with his family and bullying. Today I'm 19 and just finished my first year of my computing degree. A guy in my class for the majority of my subject areas, who is 22 years old, spent his first student loan payment all on FIFA and got into serious trouble with paying for his rent and such as he recently moved out. He had to start working a lot which made him skip classes and sleep during some.
That 22 yr old is a moron lol. I understand it for kids but dam..., you should know what you’re doing by that age and shouldn’t be so careless with your money.
Oh I do too. I never bothered to buy any fucking DLC for any game ever. Especially the Multiplayer stuff where you NEEDED the DLC to play it anymore. When that happened, I just shrugged and moved on. It's why I mostly stay to RPGs of old (maybe some new ones if they aren't shit.) and Singleplayer games in general. I just avoid this stuff. Turns out, it's quite easy to not look back again.
Dispite not even having cross game saving. Like just "oh cool you spent 100$ on packs?" Spend 100$ more because now you dont have any items or characters." Like jesus they sell the same game every year
Guys, the gaming industry IS the ESRB. Follow the trails. The ESRB was founded by the ESA, the Entertainment Software Association. Every major publisher is a member of the ESA. So, the gaming industry is effectively rating their own games. Bonus fact: Current chairman is Strauss Zelnick of 2K, the man who complained that gamers got too much free shit. And you're wondering why loot box-riddled games have E ratings? Because the people who sell them can decide how they are rated. The ESRB is not independent. It's not a government agency. It's the game industry policing itself - and as with every instance where the crooks run the show, the crooks win.

@@Trigger99X the reason the casinos in Pokémon games are not considered gambling is because of a loophole in Japanese law, where as long as you collect your winnings in a building not connected to the place where you won said winnings it does not count as gambling.

There’s a crucial point you missed regarding these “content creators”. I bet you my left leg some of them are sponsored by EA, thus their packs will most likely have predetermined rare cards to further incentify the good feeling and further purchases. Also, these videos won’t show all the packs they open that didn’t have the rare cards everybody wants, further suggesting the odds are more in their favor that they really are.
And the content creators are often given those packs to open for literally free. They never spent a dime on them in the first place, which just adds to the illusion.
Yup EA has even been outed couple of times. Content creators sometimes get better drop rates. EA gamechangers program is dangerous! It is all a scheme.

Also because of the sheer amount of regulations that would roll in for the whole of the hobby because of three company's market structures. I wholly agree that it's gambling, but I'd also like to remind you that gambling is a legal adult activity. So if you want to classify this legally as gambling, for the purpose of shutting it down, then you too will have to shut down all casinos and all lotteries. Which considering what massive revenue streams they are for their nations - won't happen. If you want to label it as gambling to "protect the children!" then congrats, you've put Nintendo out of business, as the government doesn't understand the concept of nuance, if "some" games are gambling, then "all" games are gambling as far as they're concerned. The best way to make these lootboxes disappear is not to cry for someone else to disappear them for you, it's for you to take charge. Stop buying lootboxes, boycott all EA, Activision, and Tencent products. THAT is how you get rid of lotoboxes.

But then - the duplicates start happening ... and you knew that was bound to happen ... so you went into the playground and traded cards with your friends. You had a card that they wanted, and they swapped it with a card you wanted. It was harmless fun ... mainly because your parents controlled your pocket money each week, so you never had the opportunity to waste hundreds of pounds in 4 hours - if the pack was a dud, you had just wasted 50p - better luck next week ... a harsh lesson learned (lol) It also taught children how to co-operate and trade with each other - a useful social skill .... My parents bought the only 3 missing players in my album from the company - it cost them £1.50 - it was cheap ... and my album was completed. There's no swapping on FIFA ... you pull the one-armed-bandit and hope you get the card you want, the "duplicates" are completely useless. This is NOT Panini stickers - it's Roulette with an extremely rigged wheel. Kids love collecting things - if they buy a "loot pack" physically from the sweet shop - the thing they buy has value, even if it's not what they want. It is theirs to keep forever, or be traded with their friends. None of that happens with FIFA ... and the collection disappears into cyberspace the moment a new version of the game comes out, or - as I hope - EA goes bust; a fitting end for such a greedy horrible company.
@@mrRandomvideos1 Oh boy - You are really defending the game industry? You do that fully knowing they use psychological manipulation and brainwash tactics to catch people that are susceptible to gambling? This is not a simple fun addition. Everything - Sound, colors, motion, first rewards, false promises and even payed TH-camrs are used to manipulate the "target". Complete teams are set up by the gaming industry, to create the most addictive patterns possible. All for the sake of getting people hooked. I know a few people that are fighting their gamble addiction, and it's not something like tuning on a knob. Once people are addicted (and that can happen within a few "playful" sessions), they will be far more vulnerable to this addiction for the rest of their lives. The game industry indoctrinates people at young age (when they are at their most vulnerable for that indoctrination) with a behavior pattern that will be cemented for the rest of their lives, unless they get a treatment (that is only effective in a limited amount of cases). The damage this gives to peoples lives and society as a whole must be far from underestimated.

The only potential parental control should be for how much time should be spent with them during the school year. Otherwise, that legitimately should be it.
@@maddog2190 I'm just speaking in terms of ideals there. We shouldn't have to rely on parental controls to stop people from gambling on microtransactions... mainly because we shouldn't *need* microtransactions in the first damn place!

"How can they sit there and tout that lootboxes are fun and ethical?" Because markets value ruthless pursuit of profit above anything else. If you value ethics and morals above the bottom line, you'll be outcompted and bought up by the more cutthroat company, or shareholders will pull out and go to someone who'll give them higher returns on their investments. Ethical arguments are utterly useless against companies - all that'll work is watertight and strictly enforced regulation, and even then it's only a matter of time before they find a loophole or go on to the next unethical moneymaker.
Lootboxes are ethical, though I do agree it is gambling. No one is forcing you to buy them, no one forces you to buy the game, and the shareholders will always guide the company to the highest profit, but you seem to forget who provides them with this profit - the customer (though a significant amount of people in that market are children, which does have a bad effect on it) If you don't like the game or mechanics, look for an alternative. Don't be afraid to use the power of the market against them, if you manage to make them go bankrupt there will always be someone to take their place as the demand (and potential profit) doesn't disappear with the company
@Jaden the cool thing about capitalism tho is that you can choose not to buy FIFA and any packs. Unfortunately they keep getting away with it because a lot of people still buy FIFA and packs. Same thing's happening with valorant and the $100 skin packs. Stupid people keep giving them money so they push it and see how far they can go
@@D0gpantsMcgee For a big part of the players of FIFA there is no alternative, mostly because of the chokehold EA has on the licenses for the football brands. Also Lootboxes cannot be ethical *AND* be gambling, especially if there is no regard to the age of the user. Gambling on it's own is not ethical; mostly because of the tricks and methods used to swindle you out of your money.
For me that's what got me in trouble with my credit card it was just another 10-15 bucks until down the road I'm sitting with $10,000 in credit card debt
Hopefully you're on the road to recovery on that. Had a similar problem when a car I got by maxing a card got totalled and got shit from insurance. It was a long time of hard work but I'm free from it now and I'm sure you can get free from it too.
Envy 702 Because you have a gambling issue. If it weren’t an issue, staying away would be the logical decision. Addicts aren’t known to make a lot of logical decisions.
"It's not an addiction, I just have a strong compulsive urge to keep doing it or else I will quickly descend into madness and struggle with my mental health, only to keep making it worse until I eventually have the damaging realization that iv'e wasted piles of money I can't ever get back."
Intermittent rewards (such as those in lootboxes) are the most addictive kind of rewards. If you press the button and you always get a candy, you'll only press the button when you need it. If you press the button and you never get a candy, you'll stop pressing. But if you press the button and you get only a candy sometimes, you'll press it over and over and over again, because you need to stock up for a dry run where there are no candies. That's part of the psychology that drives gambling, including lootboxes. It's primal - a dopamine release as Yong is saying. It exploits a vulnerability that's all too common, especially in people who are already dealing with difficult life circumstances or mental illness. And because of that intermittent reward structure, lootboxes hook people more reliably than a shop where you pay and are guaranteed the item you want. They are a spike up from "normal" microtransactions; they continually suck you dry by design. So even though it's very sad to see that happened to the people in the articles, I'm glad they're speaking up about how toxic lootboxes are, and glad channels like Yong's are bringing awareness to it as well.
I have crippling OCD which it is difficult to explain to you but it does stems from addiction. I simply am addicted to doing certain and very specific things and I'm addicted to it. Addiction is by far one of the most corrupt things i have come across in this world. My grandmother sits on her computer every day doing nothing but sweepstakes and fake lotterys on the internet and its pathetic. My whole family has been rooted in addiction and me and my mother are the only ones who have avoided its grasp. Addiction makes you not the painter of you life, but simply the paintbrush and the canvas that once was your life is merely at the mercy of what ever whims your addiction desires.
*Devil's advocate:* the difference is that the loot boxes don't present an opportunity to win money (directly, at least). Persons gambling via casino games, lotteries, racetracks, etc.feel compelled to continue in the hope of winning more money or winning back what they've lost. For the most part, someone buying loot boxes is simply spending money with no chance of getting it back. As discussed in the video, however, the psychological effects can be similar, overriding rational decision-making in much the same way. So I don't regard the above distinction as sufficient to justify an absence of regulation, but it _does_ exist.
David Levy Your comment seems to prove you don’t understand gambling at all. Poor soul, not my place to educate in place of teachers/parents so good day.
The “parental controls” argument always gets me. By their logic, why even have FDA regulation for kids’ medicine? It’s up to the parents to read the ingredients to make sure nothing in there is harmful for the child! Except just like most parents aren’t gamers with a comprehensive understanding of digital purchasing, in-game micro transactions, or the psychological effect it’ll have on their children in the long-term, most parents also aren’t pharmacists or doctors who can immediately understand the effects of every individual chemical that goes into making medicine, make educated guesses as to how individually sensitive their child is likely to be, estimate what constitutes a safe dosage, or figure out which illness requires the use of which drug. I’m all for parental responsibility, but big businesses have been using that as a shield to keep them from being regulated while pretending that you can’t both acknowledge the existence of parents and enact safeguards to prevent wrongdoing in the first place. I hope they get what’s coming to them.
Shifting the blame to the parents is a cheap rhetoric primarily used by non-parents. They don't understand how hard it is to raise a child these days. Back when I was a kid, none of that shit existed. My parents didn't need to know about all this crap and could leave me alone just fine, as long as it didn't get me killed. Nowadays, even "a Nintendo" is potentially harmful and more and more parents simply don't have the time to study everything, because the shitty economy forces them to work all day. That pseudo argument really doesn't work anymore. This is why I refuse to any non-parents when it comes to parenting. They just don't know what they're talking about. Most parents want the best for their kids, but they're still humans. Doing a perfect job at all times is simply impossible. Regulations help with that. They shouldn't take away our responsibility, but they absolutely should support us.
It is just a cheap way to trying to defend themself. We all know that people with addiction can't control themself, gaming new microtransaction are made to push those people to spend more than needed. For me, it is time to shut door from any form of microtransaction which push people to spend more than 100$ per month. Those who say that battlepass aren't the same are blind, it force you to play way too much for the end reward to force you to spend more money to unlock perk.
And we were told that games would have labels to help parents make decisions on what their kids can play. Yet gambling is in a game for 3 years and up? No. You shouldn't have to be a gamer yourself to know everything a game has to offer. Those ratings are SUPPOSED to help parents. There should be no gambling in any game that is geared to children of any age. They should all get the mature rating. But we all know the game companies regulate that shit and it won't happen until someone finally decides to put a stop to it. Imagine if movie companies were the ones regulating what rating their movies got? *smh*
@@asteria9963 I have 4 children, 3 step children. It's absolutely up to the parents. I DO understand how hard it is to raise a child (been doing it since 2000), however, putting the responsibility of parenting on game developers as well as the government is lazy and dangerous.

Exactly, also the consumer is just as bad as the company for falling to such an obvious trap. If you dont have the common sense to realize you are spending thousands of dollars on a videogame theres is no one to blame but yourself. The only expection is if it was a kid using moms credit card in which that case its mom’s fault for giving her credit card info without doing some research first.
I remember when it was still legal to record someone in their home as long as you didn't use any sort of audio pickup because the laws were created before cameras were everywhere. We'll get there.
The other thing about kinder surprise is that normally it is the parent buying it for their child as a treat. You do not see little kids lining up with their credit card to but them.
And the prize is a bonus. That there;s a surprise is only a portion of the allure. There's no question that there will be chocolate involved. With lootboxes the whole thing is the attraction to the game of chance.
Or getting cereals with prizes in it. You buy it for eating the cereal. The prizes are secondary. If you're buying cereal JUST for the prizes, that's an issue. But getting cereal or a kinder egg to eat, and knowing the prize is only a secondary thing, then there's no problem.

I live in vegas, I see people gambling in gas stations almost every time i go in. So many people are so addicted they gamble everywhere they go, not to mention the people gambling at bars everynight when they drink. I know people that spend thousands of dollars a night on gambling. Some people win big, but you never actually win, at best you break even.
I went to a gambling hall together with a friend a couple of times because they had a seperate room with a billard table and it was pretty damn cool to play there, just the two of us. We also used the slot machines a couple of times but I quickly backed away from those because I am a huge gamer and I could feel that I might get addicted to it. Right after that we saw a dude who played at 5 slot machines at the same time... that hit me really hard and I chose to never touch them again

Typically they edit out their losses. This is honestly something Vtubers do with startling regularity; they will do streams of mobile gacha games (played through an emulator) and spend upwards of hours and thousands of dollars trying to get the one thing they want. I think Shirakami Fubuki of Hololive has basically admitted to blowing 3k on Arknights, but those are rookie numbers in the world of gacha. Typically in those cases it's more enjoyable to watch them open packs and get trash than to get the thing they want, though, since they end up shrieking (or in some cases, making monkey noises) when they've been pulling gachas and haven't gotten the one thing they want, which is still a cautionary tale: don't blow your money on lootboxes/gacha games or you turn into a monkey.
@Manannan anam you would think that, wouldn't you? They don't. They just give them a token amount on their account to do a few free pulls. Usually the system for those sponsorships are "you're contracted to play the game for an hour. Here's some resources so you can show off the gacha mechanic, enough so that you will at least get a pity SSR by the end of it and more than enough to get through early levels. After that, we want you to show off the gameplay for the rest of your time." There are a few instances of hololive sponsored gacha streams where they actually forget to play the game they've been paid to play and start dipping into their own money WELL BEYOND what was given to them in order to make more pulls. "I'm supposed to play the game but I still don't have the character I want so we're gonna keep going." *45 minutes and tens of thousands of yen later*
I can GREATLY empathized with that young man. My mother had breast cancer while I was in highschool, she was treated and given the clear but it came back a few years later. Second year of university, when the cancer came back and was terminal as it had spread to my mother's back, I relied heavily on keeping myself busy, thinking that "It's terminal but we got great health care so she'll be able to live to see me graduate with my degree, one of the major things she really wanted me to achieve." When it got really bad, starting at Christmas in 2019, when we thought she was going to die, I sunk nearly all my time into video games to get my mind off it. Playing it for nearly the entire day if I could handle it, trying my damnest to avoid my emotions. Thank god I was only playing Persona 5 (no loot boxes to entice me), but that shear amount of dread, hopelessness, and fear is something I know intimately. When she was finally on her death bed only 8 months later, I can't even remember much of what I was doing at the time other than the non-stop hospital visits... Looking at this teen's story, I can only reflect upon my past and realize how grateful I was that I had little respect for lootboxes and the like in FTP OMMRPGs and the FEW times I bought lootboxes in Overwatch were greatly dissatisfying. My opinion of them helped me avoid them when i needed to cope with the events going on in my life. Even though lootboxes existed then, a decade ago when I just turned a teenager, it wasn't everywhere and didn't have all that flashy stuff to manipulate you. Today, it's gotten MONUMENTALLY worse for everyone, especially the impressionable.
Sorry to hear about your mum. Since the pandemic happened - I pirated a game that I didn't even think would work on my old Windows 7 computer ... Witcher 3 It worked superbly - that's been my escape - loved every moment. A game where you need to get better equipment by buying stuff - but the currency (Orens) is all in-game ... you have to play the game well to earn enough of the currency to upgrade your gear ... no real-life currency is involved at all. Hundreds of hours staying in the house in real life - but actually free to explore a whole new world of magic, extremely sexy witches, hideous monsters, and life-changing decisions in the dialogue boxes ... The company that makes it is about to release Cyberpunk 2077 .... If they say it runs on Windows 7, I will buy it - it looks incredible.
Yeah, and some of the content creators get better results(I read something that said some companies make certain big streamers win more often, or more rare prizes when they are streaming) and they don't show HOURS and hours of packs being opened and getting garbage! So the viewers literally see none of the negative to the money spending... Great Video, need more people like you and Angry Joe who are fighting against this.. Also on Fornite, apparently it's like highschool, where if kids don't have certain skins they are treated poorly, insulted on their inability to pay for packs to get the items, or shamed into begging or trying to manipulate their parents into getting them the items.. No kid should ever feel that way on a game because of a loot box skin, or player in a sports game...
You're forgetting the real Messiah, the guy who has been telling people for years, for almost a decade in fact, that lootboxes and microtransactions and all the other predatory monetisation is evil. The one and only Jim Sterling!
@Manannan anam How will the kid get the money for the game/system access cards, dummy? Do their parents hand them a debit card and say "okay, sweety, go run around in this retail operation with zero oversight and spend frivolously." The same principle applies here, if you don't/can't trust a child with your bank account, then don't put it on the fucking digital babysitter you bought to keep the child occupied.
@Manannan anam Every console that has an online purchasing portal and every web-based store front I've used since oh...around 1998, had a "remember card" check box that is not pre-selected as the default. So what you're saying is the company needs to be penalized because mommy and daddy are too fucking stupid to pay attention to that little checkbox that has been there for all their adult lives? How fucking infantile are you?
This is one of the reason I don't link my debit/credit cards to my account, this adds the additional step of having to buy a voucher and input the code.
I’ve done the same thing, but in an MMO that has lootboxes. I spent in total around $6-700 on “micro” transactions. These things are evil and are designed to hook you, especially when you’re vulnerable.
just 700? Once i decided to look on my purchase history in one mmo....turns out that in around 1,5-2 years i spend enough money that i could buy BMW X5 in good condition...and i did not even realize....feeling of " I will be lucky next time, this will help me progress " was too...
I don’t want to know how much I spent on Star Trek online, I was vulnerable at the time and yeah it was to easy. I should add you don’t pay to progress, you buy ships for consoles or traits for PVP because that’s the end game, and all PVP stuff is well pay walled I’m a grown man and know better but 🤷♂️🤦♂️
As someone whose mother died half a year ago to cancer, my heart goes out to that guy. There is nothing that can compare to the loss of a loved one, it makes total sense that he would try to distract himself in the face of such a possibility. Seriously, I hope EA gets sued into bankruptcy.
I was taking out student loans to spend money on CS:GO and DotA 2 lootboxes, it was awful. I'm paying years later....literally. I totally emphasize with those who has addictive tenancies to these types of traps. I had to delete the games and I haven't played in many years.
It's the same thing that happens on alcohol and cigarettes, as long as the companies made money they won't care about you, that's why we as humans should help each other to overcome the problems in our lives.
The problem is the excess of use, if you smoke 1 cigarette is not bad (you'll be killing some cells on your body but you can recover easily), if you drink a beer is not really damaging your body unless you get super drunk... the problem comes when there is a compulsion and a dependence, also due to the production of dopamine from these substances when ingested this will generate a habit way too easy due to the reward they generate when doing so, which is why there is a great potential for addiction. It's why these things are regulated, they must have a warning just like cigarettes and make the user more aware of what they're doing even though they won't stop consuming in some cases, just like all the warnings on cigarettes won't stop people from smoking but yet won't be sold to minors... these mechanics must be regulated as gambling to avoid kids falling into this trap and young people falling into this too, just like these sad stories we just heard.
2000: Buy the game with all of the content in it. 2020: Pay to play, no way to even have fun... 2030: Pay to pay to play the game, then pay to play for more than 30 minutes, then pay to play for a week, then pay to play for a month, then pay to play for a year.
The weird thing to me is how readily people will defend it. They act like you're entitled and trying to rip off the poor, poor company for daring to suggest hey maybe slow down with the increasing monetization stuff. For asking for a game that's actually, you know, fun to play and not just a thin shell for chance games.

"We have parental controls!" If the game was truly for 'Everyone' you wouldn't need parental controls!!!! Why would you even have a company making profit from a questionable practice have a say in evaluating if it's detrimental? You already know what they are going to say and why - their opinion on it therefore becomes entirely irrelevant. edit: hearsd you saying the same thing afterwards.... yes, exactly.
So you couldn't wait to comment something that gets said in the video a little later? I don't think addiction is the problem, it is the impulsivity of people nowadays that is the problem
No it is the opposite. If a porn game adds parental controls, it becomes 3+ for everyone. That is how things work, as we all know no kid would ever bypass restrictions.
YongYea. I want to point your attention to a subsection of people whom turn to gambling , in an unhealthy way, aside from addiction. Many sufferers of PTSD , left untreated, turn to gambling seeking the same thrill of risk/reward that comes from being in a life or death situation that causes the onset of PTSD. If you are so compelled I encourage you look at the studies on the matter and the undeniable connection between the aforementioned. I have had good friends who used gambling to cope with untreated PTSD. One in particular to loot boxes in video games. Excellent coverage over all.
Loot Boxes, card packs, etc are a pox on the gaming industry. I miss the days where everything can be unlocked within the game itself! A golden era I hope that will not be forgotten.
The football players themselves don't take any stand on this either as they get royalties. It's just despicable on the Studio/Publisher/Sports athletes.
C'mon man, It's stupid and ridiculous what you are saying right now. At this point blame Sony and Microsoft as well because they let these games come on their platforms.
Wait, they get royalties? I seem to remember some time back a big stink about publishers like EA buying likenesses of players without their permission. I'm fairly certain all of those royalties goes to the heads of sports organizations.
Thanks for dedicating some serious time on this subject. No casino would let someone under the age of 21 to gamble yet children are exposed to these mechanics and are urged to use them in their favorite games thereby behaviorally modifying them to become long term, addicted users to their games. EA is an evil company.

I have my own loot box story. Back when overwatch came out i was a huge fan played for hours i really don't care about the skins in game until the Halloween event. Now i spent a lot of money for the holiday because its my favorite one. As soon as i saw the roadhog skin i had to have it. I play the hell outta the game and told myself ill try to unlock it via play. Well the final day of the event was happening and even thought i hit max level and restarted progress to levels (Its how they let you still earn loot boxes) 2 times i still had not gotten it. So i stayed up super late till my check hit the bank and 1st spent $40 on 50 then another 50 by the end i bought around $120 before i got my skin. Super excited me was all like hell yea woohoo. then i looked at my bank i spent basicly all of my "fun" money and half my cable bill. Quite the game a month later cause of what i did and they announced the x mas event and i knew id spend more. I fully 100% agree loot boxes can and are addicting.
There are two problems here, #1 predatory lootbox schemes with deliberately shitty drop rates, #2 and people that aren't disciplined enough to not blow their money on something for short-term gratification. That's not a knock at you personally, so I don't want to come across as disrespectful. But you have to practice discipline by successfully resisting that impulse (you know the one, I've felt it too). When you successfully curb the temptation, ask yourself with clarity: is that thing really worth potentially large sums of money? I usually think about all of the other great things I could buy instead of rolling the RNG dice for a miniscule chance at acquiring a glorified piece of eye candy.
I think the one problem I have here is that this will have no impact on your game, EA makes gambling viable for anyone who wants to play the game competitively. It's like winning rodhog vs winning a Rodhog skin
@@GandalfTheSilver problem is in that moment people aren't thinking clearly n with the right mindset. Also thinking what other things you could buy doesn't work if you are a gambler.
Thats a reason I stopped playing overwatch myself because I always said to myself oh a few bucks here and few there. It adds up in the end and its just not worth it. I have made a personal choice to not purchase any game that has loot boxes
YOU spent the money, because YOU wanted the skin... nobody besides YOU pressed that purchase button... Stop being a bitch and blaming everyone for YOUR problems. I played for almost a thousand hours in Overwatch, I never spent a penny on a lootbox... So you see it depends on a person. And blaming it on some company out there or some politician is always easier than dealing with yourself and your own issues isnt it? 😂
Yeah I remember Jim Sterling’s vid of people’s testimonies of have loot boxes hounded and pushed them to spend more, damaging relationships with love ones
This is one of the reason why I 'appreciate" Steam and how they show microtransactions associated with games. You look at DoA6 and see that your game does not cost 60 USD but 1500 USD or whatever it is now. This is how much people are paying for sports games or F2P games. Nothing in life is free, and btw in Europe games do not cost 60 USD. I observe this best on PSN, last year and this year due to inflation they got more expensive. So it would be twice so far - it is a myth that game prices did not go up in the last ten years. Bull of crap.
While DoA6 is extreme. If you look at Path of Exile, those people have lived on their digital item sales in the game for like 10 years, managing to pay for both remaking the entire game once and making a sequel. Pretty good payout for just offering microtransaction vanity items.
You know for me its both Steam And google Play, why? Because ironically there is a little área where they write how much for micro from lowest to high and if they have em. Better not touch what its cursed!
@@shootinandstabbin yeh, they modified the game quite often, but i dont want to try it, it seems fun. But always online game suck because you are never truely done with em.
"EA games, challenge everything" I used to love hearing that before I played NFSU2 or freedom fighters or Def jam FFNY and now I avoid anything they're involved with.
A couple of years ago, I had sat my then 4 year old down at my old PS3 to watch Netflix so I could go outside to mow the lawn. When I came back in, he was 2 presses of the X button away from purchasing over $200 worth of NBA 2K and DLC packs. That was when it really dawned on me that Sony doesn't even ask for a PIN anymore.
@Viktor Pedrova I think you fail to see the issue. The issue is they know they're doing a bad thing. They just try n play innocent and stupid. Pussyfooting around the issue.
Heres my thoughts on EA continuing to deny that Loot Boxes are gambling: They aren't letting up on it because if do, they're going to suffer financially. It doesn't make sense for them to stop from a business standpoint, so why would they?
Except most of, if not, all that money isn't going to their game developers. Its going to the higher ups that decide which games gets MTXs and which games don't.
Probably EA has some monetary dept with their investors that we aren't aware of? keep in mind that despite all the millions they earn a sizable chunk of their games have underperformed; so on the long run investors are losing their money, yet there must be something else on the table besides greed of why EA, Activision, 2k and co. are continually taking so many risk every year.
That sounds like they should be more regulated. If their ever profit seeking nature, the function of the company, is leading it to do harmful things to people, it shouldn't be treated as if it were a singular human that can be shown the error of their ways and can have other interests than money. they should be reigned in.
I'm glad I grew up in the 90s and with older games. I know, knowing how I am, had I grew up during this time, I would definitely want to spend on loot boxes. These companies are disgusting. This is why I refuse to purchase an EA game. I really wanted Jedi Fallen Order, but, since its got EAs stamp on it, I refuse to get it.
Same here. I miss games back then. Hate some of todays game manipulate the fun for our cash. Anything random luck base reward or pay to keep playing is what i draws the line.
I say support Jedi Fallen Order to show that good games without micro transactions are still very profitable. Not to mention the fact that it's a great game.
I'm glad I had some people who i knew that had SEGAs and N64s and what not. I loved playing those games, and still do. When DLC comes out for a game that needs it in order to keep playing, or makes the game better, I just go back to my old games, and re-live the glory days, thankful that I had great people in my life. Nothing beats playing Power Rangers or Golden Axe, and Mortal Kombat on the SEGA Genesis. Oh, and Jurassic Park on SEGTA CD! Just to name a few
These stories aren't new or uncommon. What's baffling about the situation though is that people I talk to about it say "well they're grown adults with control over their decisions" or "parents should know what their kids are doing." The former is just absolute disregard for the literal mental health implications of addiction caused by gambling and the latter assumes that every parent ever has to have their eye on their kids at all times in order to prevent them from stealing a credit card or wasting their own life savings on this predatory bullshit. It's something that needs to be brought up constantly and people need to be made aware of the very real dangers of predatory practices not only in gaming, but any industry. Of course companies are going to keep denying it, because they stand to lose money if something is done. But I refuse to accept that a corporation, an unfeeling, unthinking machine of human greed should be given more freedom and rights than the people it seeks to abuse. This extends to other industries as well, especially when we move onto the topic of crunch and workplace harassment. As someone who has gone through a case of very real discrimination and come out on top, I will never take the side of the corporate machine.
People saying 'lootboxes are okay because parents should know what their kids are doing' is like saying drugs are fine parents should just keep an eye on their kids
Precisely. Demanding more from the consumers to compensate for their greedy business tactics. "They're optional, you don't have to buy them" is the worst excuse in the book. People don't have to buy them. they want to. that's the entire problem and how the companies justify lootboxes
Well said on addiction YongYea, addiction can be a lifelong struggle. Its not easy to break the addiction the first time, no matter how much you want to do it consciously. Once you have managed to get past it, that addiction is still a part of you for the rest of your life (speaking from experience). It is also not as simple as beating it and your done, its a constant struggle to combat that addiction, you have to avoid triggers.
"Look me in the eye, And tell me in a STRAIGHT FACE, that this is not gambling." TBH, EA is capable of making the straightest face and tell ANYONE that Loot boxes is not gambling, they are almost (or completely) Sociopaths. Companies required their employees to leave their soul at home after all
Micro transactions isn't gambling though. Look boxes is. If they sold items directly, they'd *only* earn like 1000 dollars from whales. But with random success from boxes, they can get 10 000 dollars from whales. Can you imagine the greed when expecting 1000 dollars for a video game is considered "Too cheap" by developers?
Slight correction. Studies have shown that the "dopamine rush" related to gambling happens much earlier - usually when the bet is placed and locked in. Crucially - it happens long before rewards are revealed. It's as addictive and compulsive precisely because the rush is independent of whether the sufferer wins or loses.
Yeah dopamine is released during anticipation of a reward, and increases with positive reinforcement. However, it’s still released because of the anticipation of “this time for sure”. Like you said, dopamine “doesn’t care” if you get a reward or not. It’s a molecule and exists for the most part just for drive, motivation, reward-seeking, etc...
It's so sad to see what happened to this kid, but I'm impressed at how well he understood the harm, and that he took the proper responsibility. But the game shouldn't have put him in that situation in the first place.
EA's denial that loot boxes are gambling is an insult to every life they've afflicted or ruined with their shitty exploitative FIFA casino game.

@@Rokabur You CAN'T cash out on them, yet you pay cash for them in the first place. It's disgusting that EA, Activision, and TakeTwo are acting like loot boxes aren't gambling when they know full well they are. They know people get addicted to them, and that's why they continue to utilize these egregious tactics because they make money off of the poor whales' addictions.
Money talks, thats how its gone on for so long. If you want them to stop. You need to hit them where it hurts. Their bottom line through any means necessary

@@blacklabel130 because these "packs" are supposed to mimic Panini stickers. That's their only defence.
I remember going to the sweet shop and spending 50p on a pack of 6 Panini World Cup 1986 stickers.
At the beginning, every sticker is a winner - and gets pasted into your album.
But then - the duplicates start happening ... and you knew that was bound to happen ... so you went into the playground and traded cards with your friends. You had a card that they wanted, and they swapped it with a card you wanted.
It was harmless fun ... mainly because your parents controlled your pocket money each week, so you never had the opportunity to waste hundreds of pounds in 4 hours - if the pack was a dud, you had just wasted 50p - better luck next week ... a harsh lesson learned (lol)
It also taught children how to co-operate and trade with each other - a useful social skill ....

They should put a massive big ($) with a red cross through it on the label ... it means "WARNING - DANGER OF BANKRUPTCY" ... similar to how a cargo container might have the symbol for radioactivity, or corrosive materials, or deadly poisonous chemicals.

"How can they sit there and tout that lootboxes are fun and ethical?"
Because markets value ruthless pursuit of profit above anything else. If you value ethics and morals above the bottom line, you'll be outcompted and bought up by the more cutthroat company, or shareholders will pull out and go to someone who'll give them higher returns on their investments. Ethical arguments are utterly useless against companies - all that'll work is watertight and strictly enforced regulation, and even then it's only a matter of time before they find a loophole or go on to the next unethical moneymaker.
ok buddy sounds like you need a dose of communism .. good luck
" How dare you think companies should be held legally

Lootboxes are ethical, though I do agree it is gambling. No one is forcing you to buy them, no one forces you to buy the game, and the shareholders will always guide the company to the highest profit, but you seem to forget who provides them with this profit - the customer (though a significant amount of people in that market are children, which does have a bad effect on it)
If you don't like the game or mechanics, look for an alternative.
"It's not addiction, it's surprise craving"
Companies understand that they're just promoting gambling whenever they promote loot boxes, they just don't care.

Loot boxes are just like gambling money away.
EA: "Did you say money?!"
"EA: loot boxes aren't gambling

EA: The difference is we "don't" participate in the latter.
@@maddog2190 Are you familiar with the term "devil's advocate"? If so, I'd sincerely appreciate a more specific criticism.
Great point.

How can these companies possibly afford to pay their developers when the salary of a single CEO is equivalent to the yearly budget of half a dozen AAA developers or a hundred indie developers? Honestly, they might sit atop a throne of solid gold, but they aren't gods.
11:00 Not to mention that the TH-camrs who are opening card packs on Video sometimes have *skewed chances* of getting good items, in order to mislead their viewers!
@Manannan anam And most times the one opening the packs didn't even pay a dime for them because the sponsoring company gave it all to them.
After that, we want you to show off the gameplay for the rest of your time."
There are a few instances of hololive sponsored gacha streams where they actually forget to play the game they've been paid to play and start dipping into their own money WELL BEYOND what was given to them in order to make more pulls. "I'm supposed to play the game but I still don't have the character I want so we're gonna keep going." *45 minutes and tens of thousands of yen later*
No two ways around it; this s**t is unacceptable.
It's edited you stooge
I can GREATLY empathized with that young man. My mother had breast cancer while I was in highschool, she was treated and given the clear but it came back a few years later.
Second year of university, when the cancer came back and was terminal as it had spread to my mother's back, I relied heavily on keeping myself busy, thinking that "It's terminal but we got great health care so she'll be able to live to see me graduate with my degree, one of the major things she really wanted me to achieve."
When it got really bad, starting at Christmas in 2019, when we thought she was going to die, I sunk nearly all my time into video games to get my mind off it.
Witcher 3
It worked superbly - that's been my escape - loved every moment.
My little brother has probably spent about £100 on fortnite, he could have just bought a better game

To be fair to fortnite, it isn’t gambling. You get to choose what skin you buy if you get V bucks, but it’s still really expensive.
Another point, parental controls can be bypassed with game cards and system cash cards.
And where did the kids get the money for that? See, you're working on circular logic here.
@@GentlemanBystander you dont understand children, and the often lack of understanding about money.
@@demosearies7591 So, you're saying the parents shouldn't allow an open line of credit on the device they access...wow, makes sense.
That and the chance that your account could be part of a data breach.

At least tobacco and alcohol are better regulated. Not to say they aren't harmful of course.

Heres my thoughts on EA continuing to deny that Loot Boxes are gambling: They aren't letting up on it because if do, they're going to suffer financially. It doesn't make sense for them to stop from a business standpoint, so why would they?
well there will be a point they will be seriously shot down, and maybe staying low might have helped
Except most of, if not, all that money isn't going to their game developers. Its going to the higher ups that decide which games gets MTXs and which games don't.
My guess is if they admit that it its gambling, the lawsuits will start coming in
Probably EA has some monetary dept with their investors that we aren't aware of? keep in mind that despite all the millions they earn a sizable chunk of their games have underperformed; so on the long run investors are losing their money, yet there must be something else on the table besides greed of why EA, Activision, 2k and co. are continually taking so many risk every year.
That sounds like they should be more regulated. If their ever profit seeking nature, the function of the company, is leading it to do harmful things to people, it shouldn't be treated as if it were a singular human that can be shown the error of their ways and can have other interests than money. they should be reigned in.

"Money over the health of people" The natural Human Greed
