He just wanted to make a solo album. Neil Schon wasn't happy because he said the songs sounded like Journey. Of course it sounded like Journey, it was Steve Perry singing

It's kind of a sad story. Perry suffered a bad hip injury while hiking in Hawaii. He didn't want to rush into surgery, but with a big tour coming up, his bandmates asked him to have the surgery. Perry refused, and this led to him leaving the band permanently. OF NOTE - this happened in the late 90s, WELL after the release of this song in 1984. To be clear, Steve was still in the band at the time of this song and video's release. It was just a side project he did between Journey albums, and it spawned three other hits, "She's Mine", "Strung Out", and "Foolish Heart". "Foolish Heart" is probably the one that got the most airplay besides this one.

That was the 2nd time he left.
The first time, he was burnt out, his mother had recently died, and he was having creative differences.
When the hip issue came up and he wouldn't go on tour that 2nd time, the band saw it as a power play so rather than have him go on hiatus, they officially replaced him.

For me, he's number one for sure. You could certainly attribute this to nostalgia because it's been my favourite band since I was 12-13 years old, but hey, to each their own! I can definitely appreciate other male vocalists that are perhaps more technical, heck even... "better", but Steve Perry with Journey was a force beyond comprehension in how their songs felt so nostalgic even if it was your first hearing.

If you want to know what happened watch VH1 behind the scenes on Journey. Not saying it is totally objective but the reason he did his solo album it was following Neil Schon putting out a solo album and playing a song at one of the journey concerts. It appears to me that Neil never really liked Steve and didn't really like the music but liked the success it brought. I also think Steve was burning out with all the tour dates and needed some time to recover.

At this point, Steve hadn't left Journey. This was just a hiatus from Journey for a solo album in 1984. He rejoined them for a couple of more Journey albums in 1986 and 1996. He recorded more solo albums in 1994 and 2018, plus a Christmas album in 2021. Basically Steve was in Journey from 1977-87 and 1995-98.

On a side note...part of his departure was that he would still get royalties on any new Journey albums and tours. He's been making bank all these years still. Let's face it, Journey would have never hit the heights they did without Steve Perry...so much so, they searched the world for a singer as close to Perry's voice as possible. He deserves the pay.

Okay, now that you've done Steve Perry from Journey, you *MUST* react to Lou Gramm from Foreigner. "Midnight Blue" is your first go-to. ✌
And no, he did _not_ leave Foreigner until 1990, 3 years after "Midnight Blue" was released, so he could focus on his solo career (which didn't quite pan out). But he would _return_ to the band in 1992 and then again left for good in 2003. 🙂

I am a 60s baby/Afr.Amer (who has always loved, and introduced my children/grandchildren) to the classics, no matter what genre. "Foolish heart " is a masterpiece. In 1982, Journey guitarist, Neal Schon, was making projects outside of the band, which prompted Steve to make a solo album in 1984 (Street Talk). Returned to Journey at the end of the year, and they worked on their next album, Raised On Radio. In 1987, he was burnt out after nearly 10 years of recording and touring along with his mother dying, so he quit the band in mid-tour. He came back in late 1995, after touring for his second solo album (For the Love of Strange Medicine (1994)). His last album with Journey was released in October 1996 (Trial by Fire), and he injured his hip while hiking in Hawaii shortly after. He held off on surgery, which prompted the band to fire him 1998, after Trial by Fire fell off the charts. He holds a grudge against the members of the band, whom he felt were sticking their noses in his business with the surgery and then firing him, and he's been a solo artist ever since.

The band had eventually been touring for about 10 years 180 shows a year plus traveling. When they finally get home it is time to put out another album and like a marriage they were getting on each other’s nerves. Steve also had some medical issues turned out to be really bad arthritis which also caused him to have hip surgery on both hips. Steve and others eventually went solo. Street Talk album was his first solo, then back together with Raised on Radio album, solo again with For The Love Of Strange Medicine album aka FTLOSM, back together with Trial By Fire album and then Steve finally left for good. Now Steve comes back in 2018 with Traces album and also Seasons Christmas album in 2021. All good. He is supposed to be working on another new album I am praying that he does an R&B album because sometimes when he does R&B he sounds just like Sam Cooke who happens to be his idol. 😎 Steve is a class act a very humble and good human. I had the very blessed pleasure of meeting him in 2019 and he is a beautiful man. 2019 is still the best day ever! 🥰 See profile pic.😎

I read when they 1st started Steve and another member were working on a love ballad. The lead guitarist made a remark about how it wasn't hard rock and kinda lame. After performing their 1st concert together when the entire audience sang along to that love ballad the lead guitarist told Perry " hey we really rocked tonight." After that I think creative differences never really left.
