Night Ranger's drummer, Kelly Keagy, wrote this song about his sister Kristy (this is the correct spelling, he tells us), who is 10 years younger than him and was growing up fast. "It's the big brother looking after his little sister when she's growing up - a simple, almost naïve kind of lyric," he said in a Songfacts interview. "I wanted her to be able to see what I was talking about, that I was protecting her."
Totally an 80s song. Too cheesy to be 70s. Too hair-band power ballad-y for the 90s or beyond. The 1980s is a nice little hermetically sealed container for this type of song.

This song was played in one of the best scenes in one of the best films of all time: “BOOGIE NIGHTS” It’s a rated R adult film, about the adult film industry in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Just about every actor in the film was nominated for an Oscar. The scene is super intense!

I know this has nothing to do with the video, but it has everything to do with what you both project to your viewing family. What I love about you two is the mutual respect and unconditional love for one another. It shows so elegantly and effortlessly that I know this is how your marriage is. No marriage is perfect, but I can see you being married 50+ years. You both are a huge inspiration to others while living in a throw away world. Your marriage reminds me of mine and my late wife Andria. We were 6 months away from 21 years of marriage before she unexpectedly passed away from a brain aneurism. We always said, “Never go to bed angry with one another because you don’t know if you will wake up in the morning. If it takes all night to settle the argument, disagreement, or issue, all you’ve lost is a few hours of sleep, instead of losing each other.” We lost a few hours of sleep here and there, but we never lost each other.
Sorry for your loss, Bill. I lost my first wife to cancer in 2006, so I know the pain you feel. You're 1000000% right in your advice: "Never go to bed angry". My second wife and I live by that rule. Also, never "part" without the words "I love you" being the last thing said. Whether it's her leaving for work, one of us going to the store, whatever. The last words we hear from one another is an expression of love. This came into sharp relief one morning a few years ago, as she left for work, like she had many other mornings. During her morning commute, she was rear-ended by a car that didn't slow down (it was speeding), and shoved her into the stopped box truck in front of her. The dirty bastard left the scene, but fortunately the car protected her and she walked away with only minor injuries. The car was totaled, but it saved her life. Fortunately, we had a dash cam in the car, which proved the accident wasn't her fault. Never did find the person who hit her, though. The dash cam was battery powered, so it continued to record after the car was totaled. The footage itself is kinda chilling, but having a record of her phone call to me telling me she had been in an accident is something I can always remind myself of that anything can happen at any given moment. I will never not have a dash cam in my vehicle, especially the way people are these days. Whenever she does something that annoys me, I go back and re-watch/listen to that footage just to remind myself that I really DO love her, and just how close I came to losing her that morning. It's more about realizing that "petty" things should never come between you and the person you love more than anything.
It's always interesting when the first time you hear a hard rock group is one of their softer songs. This is why when you do them again, you must do one of their up-tempo songs. "Don't Tell Me You Love Me" is a great one, as is "(You Can Still) Rock in America". For more of their softer side, you also have "Sentimental Street" and "When You Close Your Eyes".
They have 2 singers who share the songs equally. The drummer Kelly Keaggy sings this solo. You Can Still Rock in America is more indicative of their rock sound. My favorite by them is "comfort me" from 2017. 3 of the group are original members from their late 70s start
Two sides to Night Ranger. Ear bleeding rocker songs like: Don’t Tell Me You Love Me, and You Can Still Rock In America, which has one of the most insane solos you’ll ever hear. Then they have more corporate rock songs like this on later albums.
Dagmar nailed it with his song selections for night ranger. Since we're talking about power ballads here are some of my favorites. Save Your Love by Great White, Never Say Goodbye by Bon Jovi, and I've Been Waiting for a Girl Like You by Forienger.
Yes indeed - one of the very best power ballads. MY personal favorites are Heaven by Warrant, The Search is Over by Survivor, Amanda by Boston, Always and I'll Bee There for You by Bon Jovi, I'll Be Over You by Toto, Hysteria by Def Leppard, The Power of Love by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Oh Sherrie and Foolish Heart by Steve Perry. This is only a small list - I'll be back to add more. Love you guys!
Night Ranger - The Secret of My Success, also a 1987 movie of the same name with Michael J. Fox. The song was the title song for the movie and was a hit for the band. Pretty good movie too!
The band had 2 lead singers, Kelly on drums & Jack Blades on bass. The lead guitarist on this song is the very talented Brad Gills ****** Fun Factoid *****. The restaurant they shot part of the video in was Zimms in San Rafael, Ca. Across the street from San Rafael High. I happen to randomly walk into the restaurant wile they were filming. Watch them shoot it for a bit.
For your next 'POWER' ballad, I must suggest 'High Enough' or 'Come Again' by Damn Yankees, a supergroup comprised of: Ted Nugent ('nuff said) Tommy Shaw (Styx) Jack Blades (Night Ranger) and Michael Cartellone (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
I have looked through many on here and not seen a single Robert Palmer review. He was called the James Bond of 80s rock. Sadly we lost him early. Also, for blues please look at Leon Redbone, a very unique but magnificent entertainer. My wife pointed out your channel to me today and I told her I would write and let you know there is a lovely empty house next to us. You can open the windows on my side and play this as loud as you like.
I was so hoping you guys would give Night Ranger a try. I knew you would love this song. Kelly Keagy is the one singing this song and you were correct, he’s also the drummer. He’s great and sings most of Night Ranger’s power ballads. Jack Blades is the bassist and sings most of the rockers that they play. Brad Gillis is the guitarist on this song ( fun fact, he played with Ozzy Osbourne for a tour). If you want to see why everyone loves this group, check out “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me” and watch him duel with Night Ranger’s other fantastic guitarist, Jeff Watson. Other Night Ranger songs: “When You Close Your Eyes”, “Sing Me Away”, “Sentimental Street”, “The Secret of My Success”, “Four In The Morning” and so many more.
Night Ranger is a great rock band from the 80's, but the got lost in the shuffle at the end of the decade... the key members are Kelly Keagy (drums & vocals), Jack Blades (bass & vocals) and Brad Gillis (guitar)... original members were Jeff Watson (guitar) & Alan Fitzgerald (keyboards) The band debuted in 1982 w/ the album 'Dawn Patrol'... Guitarist Brad Gillis also spent 1982 on tour w/ Ozzy Osbourne after the tragic death of his guitarist Randy Rhoads; there is an Ozzy concert video filmed in '82 w/ Gillis on guitar, and a live Ozzy record 'Speak of the devil'. 'Sister Christian' was the hit single from Night Ranger's 2nd album 'Midnight madness' in 1983, which sold platinum (1 million copies) in the US... as did the album '7 wishes' in 1985... 'Big life' in 1987 went gold (half million sold), but 'Man in motion' in 1988 failed to reach gold sales... Night Ranger split up in 1989. Despite the 90's being hostile to 80's music, Brad Gillis and Kelly Keagy brought back Night Ranger in 1995, then Jack Blades returned for the 'Seven' album in 1998... Night Ranger is still active today, recording new music and touring. A 'Greatest hits' album from 1989 has sold a half million copies to go gold. Night Ranger songs - "Don't tell me you love me" ... "When you close your eyes" ... "(You can still) Rock in America" ... 'Breakout'... 🔥🔥🤘🤘
For a power ballad you need to listen to Heaven by Warrant and Something to Believe In by Poison. Damn Yankees was a great collaboration of Tommy Shaw (Styx), Jack Blades (Night Ranger) and Ted Nugent. They opened for Bad Company when I saw them but put on a fantastic show. A double headliner! Try High Enough by them. Looking forward to seeing Styx, REO Speedwagon and Loverboy in July.
One of my favorites by Night Ranger! A definite you should try is Triumph's Magic Power... It still rings true for me all these years later about my love of music. ❤️
Night Ranger singer and drummer Kelly Keagy wrote Sister Christian for his Sister Kristy Keagy whom he said was growing up pretty fast in their Eugene Oregon hometown.
You guys have to do the band Damn Yankees song Come again. It has Tommy Shaw from Styx which you guys love,Jack Blades from Night Ranger which you loved and The Motor City Madman himself Ted Nugent all in this band. The song will Melt your heart with Shaws vocals and Melt your face with Nugent ‘s Solos. Please,Please,Please do everyone, especially yourselves a favor and react to it
Kelly Keagy the drummer, and Jack Blades the bassist switch off on lead singing. You have Don't Tell me you love me, Sing me away, 4 in the morning,, and quite a few other songs by Night Ranger, and Jack Blades played in another band called Damn Yankees, Along with Tommy Shaw from Styx and Ted Nugent
i"m an 80s teenager and who didn't have their own lyrics for this? "Your car ran out of gas, your sparkplug caught a bass, and now it's in your *ss" lol
This song is so beautiful, and nostalgic! Take me back, please! All the pain and all the troubles in my life, I'd relive it all to relive those AWESOME seven years of the 80's again!
This song now reminds me of the scene in Boogie Nights at the drug dealer's house and the Chinese dude lighting off firecrackers everywhere in the house making everyone really tense while the song is playing
"Boogie Nights" ...a masterfully directed, acted and edited scene (and movie). Alfred Molina and his wife came to see a play I happened to be in. He was friends with my director. They came into the dressing room to compliment everyone afterward. They were as nice as can be. My director called him Fred. I knew I recognized him, but it wasn't until he and his wife left that another actor said it was Alfred Molina, and suddenly I realized who he was! OMG! He's a great actor. I remember him from as far back as the opening scene from "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Anyway, this song, and Fred, are in, arguably, the best scene from "Boogie Nights."
Oddly enough, my wife and her sisters are all at a Night Ranger concert as I type this. ... Love the band, seen them live several times and they never failed to deliver a awesome show
I love this song! It brings back happy memories and a little bit of sadness. If any of you are familiar with my comments, you know a lot of songs will be listed, or a story from my past. It's story time! After practicing to walk across the stage for graduation, in cap, gown, heels for the girls, dress shoes for the boys....the works, we all proudly walked out of the convention center into the large entryway to await further instructions. The principal and a few teachers knew what was coming. A huge number of the boys had the girls gather near a wall. We're thinking they're going to throw water balloons or something. LOL! They started singing "Sister Christian" to us! Oh, my goodness! It was so unexpected and really took us by surprise! I remember one of my favorite teachers crying and our vice-principal patting her shoulder to calm her, while our principal had red eyes, trying not to cry. The girls.....we were a mess. I remember feeling happy, sad and angry.....just a ball of confusion. I think it's because it was a favorite song and at first I thought they were using it to make fun of us, plus it made me realize even more that _this is it_ .....no more high school, time to get out there and be an adult on my own. I don't really know what I was feeling, but it was such an emotional and memorable event, and I'm glad they did it. I'll treasure that moment. :) I'm also glad they did it on the day of rehearsal and not the actual day of graduation. Graduation day had enough smeared '80s makeup from crying as it was. LOL!

On the contrary, it would fit any decade.
I agree that it has the quintessential 80s sound to it. The message may fit more than one decade, but the musical composition is pure 80s.

This is sung by the drummer. Motoring means to take a ride, to cruise etc.
Saw them a couple of times around 1980 as a support band. They brought a lot of energy and had great dueling lead guitarists.
Dagmar nailed it with his song selections for night ranger. Since we're talking about power ballads here are some of my favorites. Save Your Love by Great White, Never Say Goodbye by Bon Jovi, and I've Been Waiting for a Girl Like You by Forienger.
Love great white, but they never get any love from reaction channels.
Night ranger- Don’t tell me you love me and You can still rock in America , Crazy good guitar play. Awesome Band!
Love you guys!
omg! You're reacting to Sister Christian!!!! I LOVE it! Best 80s song ever!
“You can still rock in America”, “don’t tell me you love me” and “when you close your eyes” by night ranger all have dual guitar solos.
One of my favourite grad songs. It transcends decades and is still a beautiful song to hear today
This was played at almost every wedding for years. They have a lot of hits. Don't Tell Me You Love Me would be a great next song by them.
Hearts Away and Goodbye are two more great Night Ranger ballads.
Love this song!
Love when y'all play 80's music 🎵🎶🎵🎶
It's the BEST!!!
For your next 'POWER' ballad, I must suggest 'High Enough' or 'Come Again' by Damn Yankees, a supergroup comprised of:
Ted Nugent ('nuff said)
Tommy Shaw (Styx)
Jack Blades (Night Ranger) and
Michael Cartellone (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
High Enough!!! Please React!!! 👍🏿
Jack Blades, to this day, only rockstar I've ever met. He lives / lived in my hometown. Met him at a Little League game, nice guy!
Night Ranger. Such an underrated band. They were great.
You do not get more 1984 than this song.
I dug this band so much, and not just because they had a drummer dude named Kelly (like me! :) )
Amber is exactly right, what the song is about.and the drummer sings a lot in this group. !
Another 80’s anthem! Always loved it and still do- decades later- 💖💙👍
Absolutely MONSTER HIT! Love Night Ranger. This song has now reached iconic level in music! Awesome!
This song reminds me of my youth, but it will always remind me of the movie Boogie Nights from now on.
Night Ranger is a great rock band from the 80's, but the got lost in the shuffle at the end of the decade... the key members are Kelly Keagy (drums & vocals), Jack Blades (bass & vocals) and Brad Gillis (guitar)... original members were Jeff Watson (guitar) & Alan Fitzgerald (keyboards)
The band debuted in 1982 w/ the album 'Dawn Patrol'...
They were giving free concerts around the country several years ago. A couple friends and I saw them at the local festival in Petaluma.
Got 5th row tickets for Styx / REO/ Loverboy in a few months.
I have tickets to see them in July. Taking my son and his family.
This was such a huge hit!
One of my favorites by Night Ranger!
A definite you should try is Triumph's Magic Power... It still rings true for me all these years later about my love of music. ❤️
And Hold On from the same album. Fight the Good Fight and Lay It on the Line as well. Incredible album!
Night Ranger singer and drummer Kelly Keagy wrote Sister Christian for his Sister Kristy Keagy whom he said was growing up pretty fast in their Eugene Oregon hometown.
Clicked so fast
What a truly lush, gorgeous rock n roll power ballad is this song. Man, but I love this tune!!!
I never could get into this song, but that's just me.I appreciate how you guys delve into all types of music, that's why I love your channel!
The 80’s are the absolute best and so glad I was a teenager in that time!!! 🙌🏻
I love this song! Other 80s power ballad classics are Mister Mister with “Broken Wings” and Don Henley with “The Boys of Summer” ❤️❤️❤️
I loved this song sooo much when it came out. Omg.
Who didn't??? freakin' awesome.
Great song! Listen to Lunatic Fringe by Red Rider
i"m an 80s teenager and who didn't have their own lyrics for this? "Your car ran out of gas, your sparkplug caught a bass, and now it's in your *ss" lol
This song is so beautiful, and nostalgic! Take me back, please! All the pain and all the troubles in my life, I'd relive it all to relive those AWESOME seven years of the 80's again!
Love this song, i saw Night Ranger before the fame when they were playing clubs, great reaction guys.
This song now reminds me of the scene in Boogie Nights at the drug dealer's house and the Chinese dude lighting off firecrackers everywhere in the house making everyone really tense while the song is playing
Drummer multi talented
When Ozzy Osbourne's guitar player Randy Rhoades died...the guitarist from this band Brad Gillis took his spot on the Speak of the Devil album/tour
1st of all BEST FAMILY OUT THERE DOING REACTIONS!!! Great coming of age song about the older brother wanting to protect little sister. Loved this!
Congrats on 200k!
Motoring is a term reflecting moving foward as if your in a car driving fast ahead. Brad Gillis is an insane guitar player!
"Don't Tell Me You Love Me", or "(You can still) Rock in America"
I'm also glad they did it on the day of rehearsal and not the actual day of graduation. Graduation day had enough smeared '80s makeup from crying as it was. LOL!
