Steve Perry was so talented but the tragic life. I just can’t believe he just walked away. One of the catalysts was breaking up with Sherrie, then his mom passing and fracturing his hip, requiring hip replacement that he delayed for a long time. He said he went home and didn’t even listen to TV, radio or any music, for seven years. Later to finally fall in love again, only to lose Kellie to reoccurring cancer in a year. Now, not singing for so long, he doesn’t quite have the same range. He’s very self conscious. He has mentioned an abusive childhood, not by parents but abused. Back then there was “no one to talk it out to, so he sang it out.” The last hit he had with Journey was an incredible love song called When You Love a Woman. Nominated for a Grammy. They wanted Journey to perform it on the live award show but he refused. It should have won. Prayers to him. I hope he’s found some peace and happiness now, in later years. Out of pain, that incredible voice. ❤️
I believe Steve actually gave the royalty rights for this song to Sherry after they broke up to show there was no acrimony and as a nice little way for her to earn money from the song as she got older.
This man is anointed! God said the day he was born “son you shall sing and bring tears, joy and togetherness” He also made him an exceptional human being. He is humble, great full and loved! I have listened to and have loved this man for more than 42 years. I am glad I had the opportunity to tell him how much he has meant to me all these years at a private event back in 2019😊
Steve Perry has so much soul in his voice .He can do rock, soul, and ballads. I agree with BJ,Steve sings effortless and what a singer. I've seen him in concert with Journey back in 86 (along with Randy JAckson from American Idol) What show, what a performer.Song is infectious. Sing it Asia, sing it.
“Street Talk”. Was a bench mark, for Steve’s solo career. His second solo album, “For The Love Of Strange Medicine”. Was a more mature sounding album. Musically, lyrical. His vocals, on that album. I, think are some of his best vocals yet. I was lucky enough to go to one his FTLOSM, concerts. It was basically a Journey concert with his solo stuff included. The best 2hrs. standing in the rain, I’ve ever done.
The video rocks and Sherry is in it!! Saw them everytime they came to Charlotte North Carolina and you're right Asia you can never get enough. They don't call him the voice for nothing
Another great reaction by you two!!! BJ, you're right, Steve Perry has a voice that doesn't come around very often, if ever. Top 5 rock voices of all time, in my book.
Steve Perry’s voice has it all: the sweetness, the gravel, the operatic quality, and the range. There will never be another quite like him. Unless we are talking about Ann Wilson, but she’s a lady.
Strung out, captured by the moment, missing you and you better wait are great solos by him. Always love it when you do Journey and Steve Perry. Great reaction
Nope. Jon Cain wrote Faithfully by himself. It was about his wife at the time Tane. Separate Ways was about several people in the band and crew, including Neal Schon and Ross Valory going thru nasty divorces. Steve and Jon wished there was a kinder way to seperate without trying to destroy each other.
It really doesn’t matter what Steve Perry does Im with Asia, I can’t get enough of his voice! God was kind to him and gave him true talent! Never get tired!!!
So glad you did the song - but sad that you didn't do the official video. It's hilarious - and really tells the story of the song. Sherrie is actually featured in it - she was Steve's girlfriend. But his voice is just vocal perfection anyways. Cheers from Canada! ETA - his other amazing solo hit is Foolish Heart - a MUST listen.
The opening music to this song was composed by the same musicians who had composed a huge hit a few years prior with Kim Carnes' 'Betty Davis Eyes'. Perry's girlfriend, Sherrie was in the same room for inspiration when the song was written by Perry and the other writers. Although Journey did not support Perry's ambition recording a solo album, it was released in the Spring of '84 and did very well while he was already on top with Journey.
You guys crack me up. Like u i came late to the Steve Perry fan club. Namely bc of YTube, i watched the live concert from Houston and it blew my head off. That was a fluffing great show! And u know what duri g that time 80-81 i think I purposely avoided them. It had to do w/the instrumentation i think (what u said!) Like those 80s sounding keyboards ...idk. But anyway ive been bingeing ur videos and yeah we share alot of similar observations 40 yrs after this music was made. 40 yrs hard to believe. I watched Steve do the live Open Arms and i was literally transported to another level. Omg i was teary. Next was Wheel in the Sky and i cant put my finger on it but the quality of ThaT voice moves me everytime. So from corny to sublime. Mmmmmmyeah Keep on keeping on as they used to say in the 80s. ❤ transported to
BTW Sherrie is Sherrie Swafford. There is a story I heard on the video for Seperate Ways that said when they filmed it in NOLA she had an epic meltdown bc she of the model they chose to literally walk thru it. I think Neal Schon said that SP said to him " I guess I'm gonna have to write a really good song for her." That was O Sherrie and yes she is in the video.
The girl is actually Steve's girl friend Sherrie Swafford at the time. Sherrie and Steve had a 6 year relationship. He convinced her to do the video and considers this to be her song. To this day and despite their break up, Sherrie receives the royalties to Oh Sherrie.
I love when a new generation loves the songs I heard as new releases growing up!! Good music never gets old, it helps us feel younger. Sherrie was one of his girlfriends.
I'm gonna say something that nobody's ever said before; I remember when this song was new, like it was just yesterday. Where, oh where did those decades go? 💕❤
Steve Perry is one of the best vocalists ever! You should check out when he was in band Journey....video on TH-cam live from Texas, the song Don't Stop Believing". Back then there was no such thing as autotune....all vocals were pure live!
Steve Perry is the best! But, BJ you have to play Steve Perry`s "Foolish Heart" for Asia! A perfect beautiful song. If you thought "Oh Sherrie" was good...wait until Asia hears "Foolish Heart"!! It goes straight to your playlist collection...and even BJ will be trying to sing it! :)
Steve's Girlfriend at the time, Sherrie Swafford, for whom he wrote this song, passed away in 2004. She never married after her break-up with Steve, which was reportedly due to their arguments over his constant absence while touring & performing; and for the rest of her life, she had no other serious romantic relationships, although they still occasionally kept in touch. So we can only guess that Steve was probably the love of her life.
*My first Journey album was titled NEXT, from 1977....and Steve Perry was not yet in the band. Steve was on the very next Journey album...Infinity (1978). And wow, did he ever change the future for the band.* Please react to a Journey song titled; Mother, Father - Live Houston 1981.
I was lucky enough to see journey twice back in the day and I can tell you they sounded unbelievably great, not only Steve Perry but the whole band vocally and musically were great. I would give Steve Perry the best vocals in pop rock genre, I'd have to say the best rock voice could be Paul Rodgers, the best hard rock voice would probably be Ronnie James Dio , and the best by far Rock Soul vocal hands down has to be Steve Marriott of humble pie and the small faces. His voice will blow you away.
Opinions vary, so many strong cool voices in music that can sang. But you also have to take consideration on how many known songs each has that has lasted through the times. Dio, Rogers do have that in conversation realm. But man let's give props to many singers that sang , that their music keep us coming back to them through the decades of time.
His voice is awesome! To get a full LIVE voice sampling, you've got to check out "Mother, Father" from Journey on the Escape Tour in 1981... it will blow you away!
Seeing how much Asia love Steve Perry and Bon Jovi in other vids makes my heart smile. As you know Perry’s biggest influence was an R&B singer from the 50s - Sam Cooke. If you hunt deep enough there’s a duet with Steve Perry and Jon Bon Jovi singing a duet cover of Sam Cooke’s “Bring it on Home To Me”. It’s a gem
Steve is one of the best rock ‘Sanger’s’ of all time along with Lou Gramm of Foreigner,Pete Cetera, of Chicago, Tommy Shaw with Dennis DeYoung of Styx and all 3 lead ‘sangers’ of Three Dog Night!
I've said it before and I'm a follower of both of you, you two are a nice pleasure to watch and listen to. I love when you react to the "Rock" era because that's what I grew up on in the 70's and 80's BUT i love whatever Genre you watch. It's great stuff and such a pleasure for so many people. Keep up the good work (and BJ, you need a Tiger hat (Detroit)... :) Thank you.
Great reaction video Asia & BJ. All of Steve Perry/Journey songs are catchy, addicting & ageless!! Oh Sherrie was released in 1984 (Street Talk album) and here we are in 2022, almost 40 yrs. later, still listening to this timeless masterpiece. Even though 'Oh Sherrie' may have an 80's vibe to it, this song will never age. If you get a chance, check out the actual music video. Also, have a listen to "Foolish Heart" from the same 'Street Talk' album. Another great song is "I Stand Alone" from the 1998 Quest For Camelot movie (OST). Steve Perry also has a lot of great songs in his second (For the Love of Strange Medicine) 1994 album as well. Take care & Perry on!! 🎤🎹🎸🥁🎵🎶
Steve Perry is one of the all time greatest male vocalists in any genre. When he comes on, you KNOW it's Steve Perry 🤩
Steve came on you? Awesome!
@@jdcapps21 He means, when he comes on the radio, or starts singing ...choose one.
He sure is!!!
I'd say hes the white Sam Cooke
This song is about his real-life girlfriend at the time, Sherrie Swafford, who also appeared in the video.
I love how Asia gets it, Steve Perry is awesome and you can never get enough
It's amazing how a day can make you feel so low, but the right song with the right vocalist can just pick you up. Thank you for playing this song -
Karen Carpenter!
Great reaction guys! Please check out "Foolish Heart" on this same solo album by Steve Perry. It was a big hit also. Appreciate y'all.
Yes! I was just about to look up reactions to that
Foolish Heart is a great heart felt song
Missing you
Nah she ain't ready for Foolish Heart. She always been in love with the voice and hearing that one might put her and BJ in some trouble 😂
Foolish Heart is a must listen.
One of best vocalists ever.
Steve Perry could sing the phone book to a number 1 hit.
Steve Perry has such a great and unique voice
"Foolish Heart" From Steve Perry, is a must listen.

I'm glad he' has finally found his way back to music.
I thought When You Love A Woman did in fact win the Grammy!
Peoples' voices can change throughout the years. It gets hard to high notes later on.
Steve did his own background vocals on this song
I believe Steve actually gave the royalty rights for this song to Sherry after they broke up to show there was no acrimony and as a nice little way for her to earn money from the song as she got older.
He says she might be able to buy a cup of coffee with it. LOL
Aww :)

Steve Perry is just amazing, no matter what he’s singing. If you get a chance you should watch the video for this one, its too funny.
Official video is really awesome for this one!
My son loved a movie called “quest for Camelot “ , Steve Perry sang one of the songs and it was awesome
The video rocks and Sherry is in it!! Saw them everytime they came to Charlotte North Carolina and you're right Asia you can never get enough. They don't call him the voice for nothing
He has the "Goosebumps"voice! Every time you were down, you could blast some Journey, and it was all ok.
Hey , Asia and B. J. I love you. Thanks for your reaction to this song. One of my all time favorite songs.
More Steve. Heck yea. One of my favorite leads of all time. Thank you. Awesome
Steve Perry has an UNMISTAKABLE voice one of the greatest...
Another great reaction by you two!!! BJ, you're right, Steve Perry has a voice that doesn't come around very often, if ever. Top 5 rock voices of all time, in my book.
This was the jam! His voice is beyond amazing.
Steve Perry is one of the best singers ever!!!
Steve Perry did a solo album. This song was one of several great songs on that album.
Steve Perry’s voice has it all: the sweetness, the gravel, the operatic quality, and the range. There will never be another quite like him. Unless we are talking about Ann Wilson, but she’s a lady.

At least have a clue before making stupid statements 😂
@@carolnewsome554Thank you for correcting this post.

Steve Perry has the best voice ever!!! Watching you both gettin into this beautiful song plus Asia’s smile is as beautiful.
I love this! I like to say that Steve is singing to me, (Shari) personally...of course I was young at the time!! Still love the song!
The full version of "you better wait" by Steve Perry is definitely worth a listen.
You can tell Asia is liking the lyrics and BJ is digging the music.

hope you see this! you need to hear Steve Perry's song "No Erasin'" He is now in his 70's and still sounds great!!!
The girl is actually Steve's girl friend Sherrie Swafford at the time. Sherrie and Steve had a 6 year relationship. He convinced her to do the video and considers this to be her song. To this day and despite their break up, Sherrie receives the royalties to Oh Sherrie.

Steve Perry, the legendary lead singer of Journey...

Do JOURNEY "Mother Father" live in Houston 1981. Steve really shows off his vocals in that performance

Gotta do "Lights" by Journey. It's his song and a vocal masterpiece. Also, "Anytime / Feeling that Way" is a favorite.

Great song by Steve Perry.
Foolish heart is my favorite. So smooth
Great reaction video Asia & BJ. All of Steve Perry/Journey songs are catchy, addicting & ageless!!
