  • In this video we show you a skating exercise where you start in Hand in Hand, then transition to Killian, then Foxtrot, and end in Waltz.

HI, wonderful skating. I wonder if you could do a video of showing how to do a forward progressive and showing the difference between a forward crossover and forward progressive. Very hard to find videos that show the difference between these two moves.

Progressives emphasize forward and backward movement of the feet, parallel to your skating track. Crossovers have much more emphasis on the lateral movement, as the feet move from inside the circle to the outside when the push is generated. When going forward, there is not as much distinction as skaters will often cross the feet slightly when doing forward progressives; it's difficult to avoid.
However, when going backwards, the difference is no longer subtle. Watch Kseniya's feet when they are in waltz position. Her inside (right) leg always stays in line with Oleg's inside (left) leg and her legs never cross. This allows them to skate close together. If they were doing crossovers in waltz hold, their inside legs would not be able to stay so close together, which would ruin the appearance of the unison.
Progressives are more difficult to learn, especially backwards, as you need to rely entirely on the precise angle of the blade to achieve thrust, instead of lateral movement of the foot. It is a very different feel.
But I agree with you that a video from this team, specifically highlighting the differences, would be great to have.

@@marianneoelund2940 Thanks for the explanation. A video showing the difference and breaking it down would be so helpful.
