I’m old enough to remember watching Coach Bryant walking through the tunnel.
I remember when I was growing up in Montgomery, AL in the 70's the Bear had a TV show on Sunday mornings at 10am sponsored by Golden Flake potato chips & Coca Cola. Where they would go over the film of the game. And at the time I was always excited to be able to watch the show because the Alabama games didn't always get put on TV. This was way before ESPN. At the time I didn't think much about it, but now when I look back on it, I think it really showed his appreciation for the fans to be going over the film of the game the very next morning. Cuz I'm sure the show wasn't done live. So they had to create the show by filming it & edit it by 10am. Now that seems like a lifetime ago. Joe Namath & Kenny Stabler BOTH won Super Bowls. And idk but seems to me that winning a Super Bowl has gotten easier over the years. And the same with winning a National Championship. Some might say that Nick Saban "surpassed" the Bear. But Saban teams only had 2 years that they were undefeated. The Bear had 3. Plus the Bear never got to play in overtime either.
Yes those coaches shows were often the only way to watch most of the games when ABC had the college football exclusive. For us up here in Michigan we had Michigan replay with Bo every sunday morning at 11 am. I'm not sure of the logistics for distribution of 1970s TV, but he had to wake up early especially when they had road games because every sunday morning rain or snow michigan replay came on.
Bingo that was a goodie , was one of coach Bear Bryant saying when they made an excellent tackle.
@@garysmith8098 Yeppers!! Whenever someone got their bell rung or one of those "decleaters" that's exactly what he would say! "Bingo, there's a goodie!" And back then he had a lot to choose from. Now, for fear of getting a "targeting" penalty you don't see near as many hits like that. The only recent one that comes to mind was in the SEC Championship game Bama vs Florida when Florida player Dean stole an interception from the tight end and Metchie laid him out. Made him fumble the ball and Devonta Smith was right there to recover the fumble. And my favorite part was how Metchie just got up & walked away like it was no big deal. No celebration or anything, just another play & I did what I could. NOW THAT IS A FOOTBALL PLAYER!! All these players nowadays want to celebrate everything they do, when imho that is what they are there for & what they are supposed to do. "YA, YOU DID YOUR JOB. NOW CONCENTRATE ON THE NEXT PLAY & KEEP DOING YOUR JOB!" In recent memory they would get a sack on the QB but then give up a 20 yd pass on the next play.
CPBB was shrewd taking control of the game films. He knew teams couldn’t be shown but once or twice @ year & only a handful of bowl games. There was nothing in ncaa rules abt showing game film each week. He was able to get the game in front of fans every week, & more importantly; in front of potential recruits.
I too remember those Sunday morning shows! My husband played with Snake and Namath! He played on the ‘64 and ‘65 National Championship teams for Bryant and his dad, along with my dad, played with Coach Bryant. And now I have two grandsons going to Auburn!!! 🥴
RIP SNAKE. 🪱 the fans of alabama thank you, the fans of oakland thank you, the fans of houston thank you, the fans of new orleans thank you. you were one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. and you are my favorite OAKLAND RAIDER of all time. thank you so much for all of the great games and memories. YOU ARE MISSED.
To me, still the GREATEST. 6 National championships and what's even more amazing to me is 8 SEC titles out of 10 years. What's even more of a testament of the Bama kids is how the A&M guys always say oh god, camp was so hard, it was awful but the players at UK and Bama, that went through the same camps never said a word.
This is the way college football was meant to be. There was a gratitude and a love for the University that offered you scholarship. The scholarship alone who was designed to mold kids into young men and to make them productive members of society. Now they don't even have to earn it on the field they're offered millions of dollars before they even leave high School. I don't have a problem with players getting paid to a degree. But what's going on right now is merely selfishness gone to seed. Players bounce back and forth with no regard to school or for teammates. Only self.

When I was in high school in the 60's and on until Coach Bryant retired, I idolized him. I always wanted to play for him. I still do.

His brute honesty and self condemnation tells me he is looking at himself as much as his team. The leader takes the blame as much as glory. He is the ultimate coach. With a plow in his hand.

Coach Bryant's lawsuit against The Saturday Evening Post was a huge win for Bryant and UA, leading to the quick downfall of the magazine. At the time the magazine was one of the big 3 national magazines; Life Magazine and Look Magazine the other two. The punitive damages against the magazine awarded by the jury was at the time one of the largest libel suit awards in American history, in the millions, with Bryant receiving several hundred thousand dollar settlement.

A truly different time in America, most don't really understand how people of his generation rose up out of poverty with all of the capabilities they had, and some did not. I was a bit surprised to see some of the practice format that didn't appear very effective BUT, it obviously was as AL was a great team throughout the Bryant era. These were the days of segregation as well, and that is somewhat hard to fathom. 15 years to 1982 and his last season, people definitely looked older then as he would have been mid 50s.

He was 52 in 1967. He and my dad were roommates at Bama and played in the ‘34 RoseBowl to win National Champs!!

@@janemcleod2876 I was born Oct 1967. And just thinking about them going to the Rose Bowl that many years ago makes me proud! Especially considering that it wasn't their first time there. They had been there in 1925 & 26. I think they won one & tied one if memory serves me correctly.

@@Leroy-tj9jggrow up! Read some actual history books that were printed years ago instead of feeling sorry for yourself. I would start with “Up From Slavery” by Booker T. Washington. You might be surprised by what a real black man says about America and her freedoms.
