- 60 Minutes was granted rare access inside Nick Saban's football program in 2013. The legendary Alabama coach told Armen Keteyian he got his perfectionism from his father -- even at the family car wash everything had to be perfect. Saban announced his retirement last week.

What a quote on his father’s headstone! “No man stands as tall as when he stoops to help a child”. Outstanding. Lifelong Buckeye here, I feel lucky to have witnessed this guy’s tenure. We all have so much to learn from this man.
I've never heard that before. But that is definitely more true than most any quote I've ever heard. I've gotten old but when I see kids playing & having a good time it lifts my heart and makes me feel good to just witness fun. But to see a kid having a difficult time, I don't understand how someone can NOT help.
Back in 2007, I got married to a wonderful, beautiful woman by the name of Kim. We had met in October of 2003 & were near inseparable. She miscarried twice. Then in 2011 she was diagnosed with COPD & told she had about 2 to 6 years of life left. She passed away Christmas Eve 2015. And I had people actually say to me, "I was surprised that you stayed with her the whole time." And still to this day I don't understand how they could possibly say that to me. I loved her & married her. She only had so long to live, but I wanted to be a part of what life she had left because I loved her. I couldn't have left her to die alone, even if I had wanted to, which I never did!!! She may have been "dying" but we focused on each other & having fun together, even if that was just sitting & talking with each other. I enjoyed being with her. The fact that she was dying didn't change that.
I was talking to a lady on a bus & she asked me if I was mad at God for taking her away from me? And I said "NO!" I'm blessed by the fact that I got to meet her, know her & love her!!! Most people go through life & never get to experience a love such as her & I had. Yes, I miss her more than I've ever missed anyone, with a 30 year old daughter running a close second. But that's a completely different story.
Eddie Jackson went on to become defensive MVP in the 2016 National Championship game and a 2 time Pro Bowler in the NFL

Yep, it's the process. I remember the second string QB, a freshman, taking over in the first game against USC at the end of the 1st quarter in 2016. Fumbled the ball away on the first play and USC went up 3 - 0. Then his Saban coaching kicked in and Bama won 52 - 6. Some kid named Jalen Hurts.
Eddie Jackson is one of my all time favorite Bama players. After tearing his acl sophomore year he came back and was solid and was then having a Heisman type season in 2016 before he got hurt. I was there and it was so sad that A&M game. We chanted “Eddie Eddie” as he was carted to the locker room hoping it wasn’t the end of his college career. It was great to see him out there for the coin toss at the NCG as a captain. I knew he was a steal in the fourth round. I’m so proud of him for what he has done on Sundays and the millions of dollars he has earned.
Hard to believe this was 10 years ago, and now it’s over. Father Time is undefeated.

Can't believe we had both the Bear and the GOAT at Bama in my lifetime. Bryant when I was a kid all the way through my days at Bama and Saban for the last 17 years as I approach the twilight of my life. Damn, that was pretty cool. Roll Tide!

Nick Saban's teaching of "the process" was incredible.
I almost forgot how damn relentless he was. Being in school there in 2011 & 2012 were the best two years of my life.
There will never be another. Beyond blessed to have witnessed his reign in Crimson.

@@travisb5922 yup. the hardest part about coaching is knowing when a player needs a challenge or to be embraced.
Eddie Jackson bought into the process. He didn’t give up. I’d be willing to bet that’s exactly what Saban saw a glint of somewhere in Eddie when he recruited him. Saban could take a three star and turn him into a five star like it was a walk in the park. That was part of Saban’s Process, and he worked on that Process his entire career.

A couple years later..............."Prior to his junior year in 2015, Jackson switched from cornerback to safety. He played in all 15 games, recording 46 tackles and six interceptions. He was named the Defensive MVP of the 2016 College Football Playoff National Championship after recording three tackles and an interception against Clemson in a 45-40 victory"
Oh, the good days. I’ve been binging on games, watching the great guys from these past seasons. What a ride this has been.
Makes over $14m a year in the NFL
His injury, along with Shaun Dion Hamilton's injury I believe to this day were major reasons they didn't repeat in 2016. That Clemson team was good, that Alabama defense was great, losing two high quality players, forcing shuffling, even though Alabama's defense was still great, makes a difference in the margins between great teams.
This brought tears to my eyes. Alabama fan or not, all of college football suffered a loss when he retired. RDTR For Life.

Bear Bryant was a legend now nick saban. The 2 best to coach did it at alabama. We bama fans were truly blessed. That was one hell of a ride thanks to the sabans.
From a legend to a dynasty. The gold standard of CFB. Man, this is really something. It’s not just impressive, it’s monumental. Saban has done much more than football as well, making the difference in the lives of children in the state of Alabama. He and Ms Terry are, at least in our minds, the Head of State and First Lady, because no politicians have ever done more.

As a lifelong LSU fan, I can definitely say Coach Saban changed the university for the better even after he left for the NFL/Bama. Congrats to him on his career!
Unrelated sport: I started teaching my 10yo grandson how to shoot trap, after many coaching sessions and 2 short years he’s now a 20 yard handicap shooter and he’s self coaching, correcting his own mistakes, the growth is amazing to watch and it’s my own personal reward for a 60yo grandfather.
Coach as a fan of Alabama for many years we really appreciate what you did for the University and our state... Have fun in retirement and if you need somebody to watch the home in Florida just let me know please. Haha

Man of shear determination
Eddie was a 3 star coming out of high school, He became an All American and was one of the best defensive backs to ever play under Nick Saban. He would have won the Thorpe Award if he wasn't injued in the Tx A&M game. He's the starting saftey for the Chicago Bears.

But Saban has made three stars into five stars. He could see things in kids that no other scouts and coaches looked for. That’s why Saban is the GOAT.

In 2012 he was said to have interest in Austin to take over Texas coaching job. He & his wife were spotted looking for houses in 2015, then it fell through.

Gonna be so weird August 31 2024 first Alabama game without Saban as Head Coach since the 2006 Season when I was 11 in 5th Grade. Saban was the Head Coach since I was 12 in 6th Grade 2007 Season all the way to the 2023 Season at 28. I hope Alabama still has the Dynasty just switching Head Coaches Saban Dynasty to DeBoer Dynasty Roll Tide!!!
Thank God he didn't just head off to his beach house to never be seen on campus again. At least he's still gonna be around in some fashion to tutor the new staff if needed. My only concern is Deboer & staff gonna be able to recruit good enough to carry on. Hopefully he will have a great season with Saban's recruits and convince the players Saban may not be the head coach anymore but the perfection and standard rolls on!

War eagle 🦅 Auburn University but Saban made the iron bowl even bigger since it's as important as Michigan Ohio st but even better and bigger than it usually was and people forget lsu wouldn't be famous as much without saban
College football is in a tailspin and Saban didn't want to be associated with it. Declining viewers, declining young people participating, skyrocketing cable and internet rates to pay bloated coaching salaries and now players as well. The college fan is much different than the pro fan and they're changing the game to a pro model. Within 5 years there will be one super conference of about 20 teams and the rest will be like watching high school teams play. It's over folks, the almighty dollar has won again.
I'm still crying I can't believe it it's unbelievable I don't like it.
I know, but it was inevitable. Be proud of what Saban did these seventeen years, and wish the GOAT all the best. Of all people, he deserves exactly that.
