    Bama and Penn st were both real good teams back then 79

    Don McNeil's play was INCREDIBLE. The goal line stand doesn't happen if he doesn't come off his man and completely stone the receiver and keep him out of the end zone.

    Marty Lyons said it all when he mentioned the preparation of the defense by former Tide defensive coordinator Ken Donahue. Anyone who knew that man has great respect for him as a defensive coach.

    What is it about this play we Alabama fans value so highly, you outsiders are probably asking yourself. Why is this one play from the 1978 national championship game put on such a pedestal even though there was still 6+ minutes left on the clock? The Goal Line Stand isn't celebrated for simply being the play that, in hindsight, turned out to be the play that won us the game. It's about much more than that. The Goal Line Stand is revered for being the embodiment of Alabama football itself. The Goal Line Stand represents standing your ground and never giving in. It symbolizes toughness, dedication, desire, commitment, and determination. It's the teamwork of 11 guys working in unison to achieve their goal; of digging deep within yourself when you're exhausted and giving that extra effort when it's needed most; of overcoming the odds.
    This Sugar Bowl pitted undefeated #1 Penn State against a one loss #2 Alabama. Penn State doesn't have to win this game to become national champs- Alabama does. Alabama has to win this game outright if they are to become national champions. If Penn State simply ties Alabama it still gives Penn State the national title. This was the moment that Penn State could score that tying TD, increasing the likelihood they will walk away with that trophy everybody wants to win each year. But Bama rose to the occasion at the point in the game they were most weary to deny their opponent the tying score. How did Alabama do that exactly? They didn't give in. They stood their ground. 11 guys worked in unison to achieve their goal. They had the toughness, determination, and desire to reach deep within themselves to give it the extra effort this situation demanded. In short, for Alabama to rise to the challenge and succeed at this critical moment in the game, Alabama simply had to be Alabama one more time.

    UsC and John McKay saved the UAT football program when they agree to play in Birmingham's Legion Field where the integrated USC football squad demolished the lily white UATer's 42-21 and it was not even that close. John McKay was a great man who felt badly about the alcoholic Bear and wished to help him in every way possible. Mckay was a SAINT!

    I yi yi. You did not win the championship on that goal line stand!! There was still 6 min. 30 sec. left in game. You got the ball back, we stopped you on a 3 and out, you punted a very short punt. We got the ball on about your 30. However, we had 12 men on the field so you got to repunt and got a good one off and we were not able to move it to the end zone as time ran out. I've always wondered if we would have gone for 2 with 6 min. left. We would have had we scored at the very end. Now that would have been very interesting. There you would have had a chance to win the game or we would have. We'll never know. I say we lost the game on the 12 men on the field blunder. It was a hell of a football game but quit trying to sensationalize the goal line stand. It happens all the time. 6 min. 30 sec. is forever. We are!!! And we'll be back soon. Get ready.

    • @Britton_Thompson
      @Britton_Thompson 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Sure, there was ample time left in the game after the Goal Line Stand, and the Goal Line Stand itself did not win the national championship for Alabama in that game. But that isn't why we treasure & glorify that moment in time. We value it so highly because that one play is the symbolic embodiment of Alabama football. It personifies the Alabama Crimson Tide tenacity of digging down deep within yourself to achieve more than you think yourself capable of; to refuse to be beaten when you're exhausted; to play as a team- 11 men on the field at one time working in unison to achieve a common goal. It's the embodiment of toughness, resiliency, and success during the most critical moments in time. The Goal Line Stand is not valued among Alabama fans for being the play that won the game that night. It's valued because it's the spirit of Alabama football made corporeal.
      P.S.: Yes, goal line stands happen often in football games; they're not rare phenomena. But they are rare when they occur during national championship games. That was the last, best opportunity Penn State had of scoring that night in the Sugar Bowl. Penn State was ranked #1 in the nation and undefeated, while Alabama had a loss entering that game. If Penn State simply ties Alabama that night, they win the national championship. Alabama had to win that game outright in order to become national champions. Because the pressure was on Alabama to beat the undefeated Nittany Lions, they accomplished that goal by refusing to allow Penn State that TD late in the game when the stakes were high.
