    I has in high school and my dad took me to this game with tickets he got for his retirement. We sat on the 50 yard line. Although I knew I was witnessing greatness I really could not comprehend it all at that time but smile every time I think about being there.

    My dad being an alum, I grew up a Mississippi State fan at little 30,000 seat Scott Field during the ‘60’s and ‘70’s, those were some lean years, even for M State, but it was THIS ‘79 Sugar Bowl that made me a college football fan. I sat and watched it with my father and beyond the love I’d always had for the pageantry and atmosphere of college ball, I fell in love with the game that night, and my team wasn’t even playing.
    Bama rolled on into the fall of 1980 and by the time they came to Jackson, MS, were on a 28 game win streak and the undiluted #1, and my beloved dogs toppled the Tide 6-3. I thought we had really arrived. I think it took us 16 years to beat them again. 🤣

      I was five years old at the time and I remember watching it as well. We were Tennessee fans, but my dad was rooting for Bama because he didn't like Joe Paterno at all. Paterno had made some negative comments about Tennessee years before after a game where the Vols beat them. Where Bama was concerned, he said they always had class, win or lose. Even then, I knew that goal-line stand was something epic, and I still remember it.

    Both Paterno and Bryant were bigger than life in the football teams who had a similar ending in that they died after they stopped coaching, but where they differ is their legacies are entirely different now whereas Paterno is disgraced and Bryant is respected.

      Joe was thrown under the bus by the Board of Trustees to draw away attention from them and their ties with the Second Mile and their plan worked. Joe's exact actions of reporting it up the chain to those responsible to handle such matters was adopted by the NCAA and became their guidelines on how to handle such matters. Joe reported unlike those at Michigan (Bo keeping Dr. Anderson on staff), Ohio State (Dr. Strauss) and Michigan State (Larry Nassar). Nick Saban said he would have reported it to the university president and let them handle it.

      You must be new...I love seeing what Alabama is doing and how Saban has adjusted. And I will cheer for Bama no matter what. However, if you were to get an Alabama media guide and look back at the entire history of Alabama football, the best Alabama teams did not give up a lot of points. Alabama likes to win, but prefers to much like the 1992 team, the 2009 & '11 teams, and those in the Bryant era, and even before that, by stopping the opponent cold, physically dominating and leaving no doubt as to who has the most physical team. I understand how the game has changed. I understand the need for player safety. I understand the need to score points. But I will say this, I prefer a 13-7 war over a 52-46 shootout any day. And most Bama fans my age and older will say the same thing.

    • @tmarsh0307
      @tmarsh0307 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just remember beaming with pride five years ago when Bama beat LSU10-0. It felt like a wrestling match where Bama finally pinned their opponent. Then I was disgusted by how many said it was a terrible game. That's what many of us were used to and what we would love to see again.

    • @johncate9541
      @johncate9541 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This was in 1978, though. The Bryant-era teams played well offensively, of course, but they were conservative on that side of the ball. They won with defense. So did Penn State in that era. This was two hard-nosed teams that didn't give an inch, and Bama was literally an inch better.

    I absolutely love how every single person being interviewed completely tap dance around their true feelings. You’re know they’re just itching to say that “Every game we win against a yankee school like Penn State or Notre Dame is payback for the Civil War to us.” But they can’t actually say that, because they have to be PC.

    • @scottjackson163
      @scottjackson163 ปีที่แล้ว

      There’s definitely an element of that going on from an Alabama perspective, except that, in the case of Penn State, there is typically great respect whereas in the case of many other “yankee schools” (e.g., Notre Dame, Ohio State) there is only contempt.
