Keep the Secessionist movement based on mars, but make it bigger than just Mars seperating from Earth. Other colonies on other planets, maybe the Moons, stuff like that.

As for what side between this First Order & New Republic would win, I'm inconclusive as the way both redesigns makes them similarly match. An major external power like the Hutts, Chiss, or an extra-galactic power like the Grysk or Vong could change the tide.

    • @josephpalaiologos

    • @volodymyrboitchouk
      @volodymyrboitchouk 3 ปีที่แล้ว +66

My money is on the new republic, simply due to morale. The first order has gotten a very successful alpha strike and has gained lots of ground, but the germans got the same at the onset of operation Barbarossa and we all know how that turned out. Corelia, Mon Cala and Kuat are, to my knowledge, still under new republic control or at least sumpatherics. This means that the primary shipyards from which the New Republic's fleet would be built are in play. The First order has certainly improved on many doctrinal elements of the Empire, but still suffers from having inferior fighters accross the board. With the NR maintaining the rebellions institutionalized fighter corps I suspect this deficiency to get worse and worse with time.
Moreover, the systems that have seceded to try and make a separate peace cannot be depended upon by the FO. If the FO just leaves them be it sacrifices access to their resources just to deny the NR the same. But the NR has control over the wealthiest and most populous parts of the galaxy, so the FO will never win a war of attrition without exploiting every teritory it can. This will breed resentment in it's new subjects and result in partisan activity behind the lines. This is something that many supporters of the NR have extensive experience in, so the longer the war goes on the harder things will get for the FO. Even worse, the destruction of Starkiller base and the crippling of the Supremacy and its supporting fleet represent a major blow to the prestige and power of the FO. The propaganda value of Luke's stand is even worse for them.
In order to win, the FO needs to crush the republic within a year or so, before large numbers of new warships can start coming off the lines and take away the FO's present advantage. And even if the FO succeeds in getting a quick victory, which I find unlikely, it would just be in a weaker position than the empire before its collpase; weaker and with a less solid hold on the galaxy on top of large numbers of experienced rebels and freedom fighters continuing to organize against them. The FO can only win in the short run, but however well things go at first the FO will never be able to hold on for long.

These are things they attribute to the reimagined versione of the New Order that aren't present in the canon one. For me, both this re-imagined New Republic and your Re-Imagined First Order go hand in hand. Neither is greater than the other, but rather create the foundation for a great conflict to come, with both sides well established, clearly defined, explained and whose values and ideals are clearly expressed and demonstrated.
The First Order is far smaller than the New Republic, but it is extremely well organized and prepared for war. The New Republic is fragmented because it has no clear focal point until war starts and then it coalesces to defend it's freedom from the oppression that the First Order represents, and in the middle of it are thousands of worlds that could shift to either side and create a galactic tug of war for both sides.
Truly this is the Star Wars galaxy that I would wish to explore, one where there are two sides, both equally powerful and for whom neither victory is assured, but would take a huge struggle to achieve (if it ever can), and in the middle there are mercenaries, bounty hunters, smugglers, pirates, freedom fighters or First Order sympathizers creating a complex but interwoven war narrative as rich as any war could have.
In this timeline, politics, differing groups, loyalties and more could be just as essential as the armies that would have to be raised for a conflict of this magnitude, and unlike the Clone Wars or the Galactic Civil War it would be more organic. No side is guaranteed victory, there is no shadow power holding the reins of either side and no side is really more powerful than the other.
The opening salvo after the destruction of the New Republics capital is mirrored by the destruction of Starkiller base, and the actions of Luke Skywalker in defying the First Order creates a point of unity for an emerging Republican military to counter the First Order. Furthermore, they have time to build these forces, because the First Order is small to begin with, so it has to choose its battles and strongholds carefully to not overextend, while it builds its forces and its society. Similarly the forces of the Republic, need time roe regroup and prepare a plan of action. They have a small, but capable navy to begin with, and they have to buy time to build their forces up and get their leadership back together, but they have depth of defense that the First Order cannot immediately contest.
In the mean time the galaxy will be of the mind of choosing its side carefully, as both sides have advantages and disadvantages and this diplomacy could usher in important battles that would decide the fate of the galaxy as each side seeks to gain against its enemy.
This is how much I enjoy this Star Wars world that you built, that it makes me wonder what the battles, armies, weapons, vehicles, ships, heroes and villains of this era that you described could look like. I don't know if we will ever know, but this excites me more than anything in the Star Wars galaxy, since the return of Luke Skywalker to the Mandalorian.

@@kx4998 the way the Templins setting finished, with the First Order beginning it's reconquest and the New Republic coalescing against the surging First Order, opens up infinite possibilities on all fronts of war.
Diplomacy, war, subterfuge, backstabbing, double cross, religion, profiteering and simple survival are all on the table, because this is the opening salvo of a war of Galactic Proportions and the sides, like chess are just beginning to make their opening moves.
The First Orders, First Order of business (sry, couldn't help it) is to establish a galactic presence in those planets that swear allegiance, gain and stabilize territory and resources and move on to less compliant worlds as they destroy New Republic forces.
Wether this is done through outright military might, diplomacy, subterfuge or intimidation will depend on the writer, but eventually a First Order block will materialize and coalesce as one side of the Galactic War.
On the New Republic, they will be on the retreat from the well prepared forces of the First Order, even as they mount desperate last stands, desperate delaying actions or prepare guerrilla cells for counter insurgency, all to buy time for the remaining, but currently limited New Republic forces to muster their strength, coalesce as a dedicated war time force and gather their own allies, resources and personnel necessary for the conflict that is set to escalate.
In the meantime, the New Republic leadership will have to hold it's allies together against the forces of the First Order and find ways to bring those not yet aligned into their fold through any and all means necessary to create a credible front to the First Orders war machine.
In between all that the Jedi and Sith, will begin their own wars for Freedom or Dominance, as the Jedi order is to be reforged in the fires of war, while the Sith extend their grasp beyond their means, considering themselves invincible (as they always do).
The possibilities for this setting are limitless and you can choose what part of war interests you more, this hypothetical scenario created by the Templin Institute has more than enough breadth and width to satisfy any specific war interest you may have.
Personally I am more interested in the weapons, vehicles, ships, tactics, strategies and units used and the wars fought, than the diplomacy, but I cannot deny how interesting this diplomatic front can be in this scenario.

I keep waiting for "Star Wars" to finally try and answer the question, "what's so great about democracy anyways?" - "The Republic" is the thing they're fighting for through the whole series, but there's never much of a strong argument about WHY they're fighting for that.
The original trilogy just treated the Empire as a self-evident evil, which was fine for the story purposes. But the prequels highlighted all the ways the Republic was a bloated, undemocratic mess already well on its way to irrelevance and decline - if it wasn't the emperor, the Old Republic would have collapsed from something else.
The one instance where any Star Wars seemed to be showing that "democracy" might be something worth preserving is in "The Mandalorian", where it shows the New Republic clearly operating on a more humane set of standards - showing mercy, not shooting first, focused on helping rather than just killing and oppressing.

This is because atleast in part, star wars is propoganda for liberalism. Now this doesnt make it bad, it's not. But Your getting into a Major issue with liberal democracy now, that is brilliantly shared in the star wars mythos. In the modern day, our system what we live under, cannot make a defense of itself under it's own merits and without contrasting itself against the external. For example you see the common defense of capitalism as as "well atleast under capitalism I can eat, unlike communism" or "atleast I get a say in who runs the country, unlike under fascism." To get into a little philosophy, it's because the star wars in universe, and our irl universe share a liberal (in 19th century) veiw of metaphysics, which is subjectivist in nature.
And you can't really justify something as good or bad, if good and bad are just subjective.

I absolutly love this, as I also adore your version of the First Order!
While I supposed it could be complicated to show this on a movie, juste having the Resistance working with NR government survivors and a proper armada would be enough than just having paramilitary group fighting the First Order. Seing the Resistance and NR as the underdogs against the FO that was somehow more powerful and resourceful than the Empire was one of the many things I disliked in TFA.
I also like that your version don't include the Jedi into the NR. While the Old Republic was based on Jedi being space sheriffs, it was this inter-dependance that lead to both their downfalls. The Empire shows that order and "peace" could be maintained without them. The New Republic has to construct itself without the Jedi (and the new Jedi Order must also rebuild itself and can't help the NR). But seeing one Jedi fighting alone against the First Order, untouched, unharmed (the last scene of Luke Skywalker, one of my favourites in the sequels) and being use as a motivational record to fight gives me chills (as well as the rallying cry "For the Republic!" in the end).
As I think your Reimagined versions of the New Republic and the First Order could be evenly matched, I think that in the long run the NR would be winning. The Old Republic is just 40 years ago, the Empire 20, many people still remember the pro and con of each. While the Empire was a "continuation" of some sort of the Old Republic, the New Republic had to face many challenges after "forced takeover" to assure its position. I don't think the First Order could do the same with their limited ressources and controversial reputation inherited from the Empire. Also I don't think that the collaboration between the regular forces of the Sith Eternal and the Asha-Karat would last forever if the conflict last too long.
Here's all my thoughts about this amazing video!
To anyone who had the courage to read my loooong comment, have a great day! :D

FOR THE REPUBLIC! (Basically, I like that's it's less "New Republic gets destroyed" and more "New Republic gets delt a major blow")
Also, I'm curious on how you guys would handle the New Jedi Order. Personally, I would lift the Legends version of the NJO, and combine it with the "Luke's nephew falls to the dark side under his leadership" plot. And MAYBE throw in Luke's self banishment.

Personally i would also add that Rey used to be a member as well, she's either the daughter of Leia and Han instead of Ben or the daughter of two renowed Jedi master of the New Jedi Order, in both cases Rey was one of the best students of the Jedi Praxeum in both lightsaber combat and the use of the Force even rivaling many Jedi masters despite being only a Padawan. In addition she's a genius in many scientific and humanistic field due to her time spending on the library of the Jedi Praxeum and she's also a master of Teras Kasi believing it would be useful to her. Rey decided to follow the path of the Jedi healer but after the destruction of the Jedi Praxeum she escaped on the criminal underwolrd becoming a smuggler, she also developed PTSD due to having lost either both of her Jedi masters' parents or only his father Han Solo. As for the rest of the Jedi Order i would make that Luke exiled himself after his wife and children were killed in the attack while both Leia and Ahsoka reorganized the New Jedi Order as a Resistance group against the Empire (not the First Order).

    • @stephenjenkins7971

@@samuelebincoletto637 This. I was all for Rey being a remnant of the NJO that was forced to flee and maybe having her memories wiped while the older Jedi went into hiding to strike out against the remnants of the Empire. It would explain so much of her talents without needing a "Rey is Chosen One/Rey is the daughter of important Force Wielder". While also leaving the door open for the NJO and the ideals that Luke instilled in it to survive and prosper again. For Luke to really be the "first of the new" Jedi, instead of just another hiccup.
Edit: I definitely wouldn't have her being a "rival for many Jedi Masters", but definitely be an advanced Padawan, personally. And the other stuff about her being a genius is too much. She's just a random talented Jedi that was foisted onto a bad position and would be among one of many to help bring down the new threat. It's through her actions that she would stand up above the rest, not her intrinsic traits like being a genius or uber talented.

    • @akl2k7
      @akl2k7 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The NJO being killed off was one of the worst parts of the ST backstory. Maybe instead of killing off all of Luke's students, some escaped. Even in canon, several were off-world during his temple's destruction (though they ended up killed by Kylo Ren later). Maybe more are off-world and, knowing what happened, lie low, waiting for their chance to strike. I'd maybe include such Legends Jedi such as Corran Horn, Kyle Katarn and Mara Jade among those. Heck, even Ezra Bridger and Ahsoka could be running around with their own squads. It wouldn't make much since for there to be no other Knights other than Luke by that point in time, even if Luke already had a natural talent.
Though, if I were directing Episode VIII, I'd have Luke have students on Acht-to with him. Of course, if I were directing Episode VII, I wouldn't have had Kylo Ren kill off Luke's Jedi. It was such a cheap way to change it back to the status quo of a lone Jedi.
And yeah, it would make more sense if Rey was trained a little bit beforehand. Heck, even with existing canon, it would have made more sense for her parents to drop her off with Luke instead of with a random, abusive slaver. Or maybe she was trained by one of those other Jedi knights who were offworld and laying low.
Now that's just making me think of my abandoned ST rewrite fanfic with Lor San Tekka as one of Luke's Jedi (and Kylo Ren had to fight him)... That would have at least made his character a bit less one-note.

@@akl2k7 I was thinking of something like this, that not all members of the NJO were killed but were able to escape, the only difference is that many of them were regrouped by Leia Organa and Ahsoka Tano turning it into the Resistance which in my version is actually a fragmented NJO. As for Luke i would still make that he exiled himself on Ahch-To because his wife Mara Jade and their children were killed in the attack on the temple as well, just like the actual movies he became disillusioned with the Jedi believing to be in part responsible for the death of his family but after training Rey he was able to heal his trauma and comes back to be once again the Grandmaster of the NJO with Rey as his new Padawan.

A side story for this setting:
A large group of Mandalorian Survivors of the Purge banded together and became the Crusaders Reborn, and declared War on an Imperial Remant State. The state, weakened by the "armistice" is left unable to properly defend itself as the vengeful Mandos ravage it, siezing its military hardware, habitable planets, and decimating its population, before declaring it Gratua Tra: Vengeance Space. The rest of the remnants are terrified and enraged, while the Republic is torn internally, as the brutality of the Mandalorians inspires distaste in many citizens(especially those with pro Imperial leanings) while the general hatred of the Old Empire makes it difficult for many to feel any sympathy for the remnant(especially Mandalorian citizens of the Republic). This drives more division in the Republic, and causes the Remnants to desire more military power, and to flock to the New Order, while distrusting the Republic.
Now the Republic is faced with a cross roads: do they try and mediate between the Mandalorians and Imperial Remnants? Side with one group against the other? And will the Mandalorians be content with what they have, or continue attacking Imperial Remnants? Will they turn their eyes on the Republic, like their ancestors once did during the time of Revan?
But they aren't the only ones faced with difficult choices. Will the New Order seek to punish the Mandos or recruit them like the old Sith often did? Mandalorian warriors are a useful weapon to wield against your enemies, after all.
And will Luke or any of his Jedi learn from the mistakes of Revan and the Jedi Order of his time, or will some of them repeat the cycle of the Jedi-Mandalorian Wars?

Not everyone was against the empire, seeing worlds get massacred (by whomever doesn’t have to be Mandalorians) would cause more people to think of the republic as uncivilized and especially *chaotic*. This yearning for stability and order would cause support for an empire remnant state.

I love this kind of issues that crop up when its the Republic that is the head of galactic power, because its so poignant about the issues between lofty idealism and the grim realities of geopolitical maneuverings. Its easy to say "stand by your ideals", but that could just as easily be perceived as a "betrayal" of the Republic's natural allies while getting no conceivable benefit from Imperial Remnant factions, and perhaps even embolden such sympathizers in the Republic. It's just such questions that SHOULD have been presented in an age where the democratic power reigns supreme but rumblings of dissent still exist.

One thing I would love to see adopted in science fiction, especially in massive interstellar legislatures: the formation of a permanent “standing committee” within the larger institution, which meets regularly while the larger congress or legislative body is out of session. Essentially, this allows for the benefits of a smaller, more cohesive permanent legislature, while having the representational benefits of a large body with many more members. The larger body has to ratify the decisions of the standing committee, but the standing committee has latitude to operate with more flexibility and the ability to negotiate among a smaller number of members. I think this would work really well in the case of a huge interstellar nation like the Galactic Republic.

I think that your reimagined versions are better than the original ones but the problem would be to put these things into movies. I mean the movies would have to not just introduce the new factions but also introduce the new characters, integrate the old ones, create a plot etc. But I would've liked to see the New Republic fighting against the First Order and if there's one thing that's really annoying me about the new canon is that the New Republic was crushed in a single strike. Yes, the Hosnian Prime could've been destroyed, the New Republic dealt a serious blow but I would've liked people fighting in its name and proving that democracies can fight and win a war.

In fact, with this video they have proved that with a few minor details, some fixes here and there and well constructed lore can actually make something awfull a lot better. I do not hate the new trilogy for wasting the EU. Characters like Mara Jade, Kyle Katarn or many others are already things I will not forgett but I'm not a nostalgic. I can let all of that flew away for a well constructed, interesting lore like this one. I hate the current sequel trilogy because it's been done with no planification, no lore, no plan or any kind of love for it's own internal coherency or consistency, just as a fast created, money milking soulless stuff that it's boring to watch. Love this. Especially love Mon Mothma aggressively nationalising the Oligarchs' industries. I love how both this and your First Order video still fit with the events of the films, so I can just exist in my own head Canon of TFA and TLJ, with these videos weaving between them and the original trilogy, and I can just ignore the existing of ROS, which is always a good thing.

Edit: Not finished with the video yet but so far enjoying. I'm curious how this Republic would deal with the constant wars of the old EU or your guys' First Order. Kinda enjoy the crisis so far isn't a new war every 5 minutes but more internal factors like oligarchs.
Edit 2: well the fighting with the hutts and pirates was very interesting
Edit 3: Now that was a great way to end the video. Loved how you brought in The Resistance into it. The government isn't perfect and I love that! It feels genuine and honestly much better than either the Sequel or EU New Republic.

The amount of stories you could get from the volunteer forces alone is just astounding. I would love to watch tv shows, or read books on each of those groups. Especially the AT walkers. Sounds like such a fun story idea. Sure it's the mercenary idea all over. But trying to function within a government hierarchy and even working along side the proper military leaves open so many social, political, and military conflicts that would be fascinating to explore.

I just love how the New Republic is basically the modern US it had its own Afghanistan situation in Hutt space where their intervention ended up turning into "a low grade, long term police action". Then Chancellor Syndella literally has her own build back better program. There are other examples but these are so specific that I couldn't help but laugh at how well the allegory is made.

except Syndulla's "build back better" program actually built things instead of stripping away personal freedoms, increasing taxes or furthering divisions. also Syndulla was elected legally instead of being an illegitimate Chancellor.
if anything, what Syndulla did was make the Republic great again.
