- 🔫WELCOME back to my channel!🔫 Today I'm going to be checking out DIRTY HARRY (1971) starring Clint Eastwood and as per usual I am pretty stoked. I've only ever seen one movie with Clint Eastwood and it was Gran Torino (2008) and still have yet to checkout the movies that he is most known for like his action and western movies. Andy Robinson, who played the killer really did an amazing job. I've read that he ad-libbed the "Thats's a big one" line, and the director liked it so much that it was left in.

He's one hell of an actor, he went on to play my favorite character on Deep Space Nine.
He also wanted to do a flip when Harry shoots him in the stadium, oh he was in Hellraiser to.
He also co-starred in the movie Charley Varrrick with Walter Matthau.
Racial slurs were not considered unacceptable in the 70s, but that's part of what made Dirty Harry so uniquely edgy for the time. He was basically a "f**k your fragile politically correct feelings" even before "political correctness" and "emotionally fragile/special snowflakes" became part of the common parlance.

@@Muck006 Totally. I'm sure cops with a flippant attitude towards suspects' rights and a penchant for racial slurs won't be a problem at all. What could go wrong?
Like, I get that it's a movie. I don't find Dirty Harry offensive, but I do think people should be careful how they appreciate it. Because we should all be able to agree that racist cops running around disregarding people's rights is a bad thing, but this story is specifically constructed so that Harry Callahan's behavior makes sense and we agree with it.
When the movie ends, we should sigh and say, "Okay, that was fun, but now I'm back on Team 4th Amendment Rights and Team No Racial Slurs Especially from Cops." It really seems like you are not on those teams. It feels like you're stuck on Team There Is Always Something to Offend a Feminist, and my friend, that is not a good team. You should join a better team than that.
@@noodle_fc Saying something doesn't make you racist. That's the real problem with the snowflake attitude. People will always say things they shouldn't. Get a grip and worry about the actual misdeeds. As far as cops go, I don't give 2 shits what they say, it's what they do that matters.

Suppose I express animosity towards someone, and later I punch that person in the face. What I said before I punched the person is relevant. At a trial for my "actual misdeeds," what I said would be considered. My words indicate a possible motive, and motive matters.
If you don't think that's a relevant thing to worry about, I don't know what to tell you. Take it up with the "snowflake attitude" of the legal system going back centuries.
Now, "it's what [cops] do that matters" sounds really good until you think one step further. A cop shot a citizen to death. Sometimes that was necessary and sometimes it wasn't. The mere fact of "what they do" isn't enough to tell whether it was an "actual misdeed" or not.
But the truth is, you already know that motive matters. You care about the reason people do things all the time in your everyday life, and you routinely judge others' motives according to their words.
The truth is, you _choose_ not to care about certain motives in certain contexts (or at the very least you choose not to take words as evidence of motive in those specific circumstances). When a public servant shoots a citizen to death, it is really fucking important to know why. Yet that's a thing you choose not to care about, or to care about only superficially, which is the same as not caring. We all ought to want to know as much about the motive as possible, but you don't.
You might give some thought to why that's the case. You might give some thought to whether you should make a different choice. I really hope you will.

Andrew Robinson was so good as Scorpio that it hurt his career as for more than a decade people wouldn't cast him in protagonist roles.
He finally got a revival in 1987 with Hellraiser and in the 90's in the serie Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
But for a long time, directors could only see him as Scorpio which is totally unfair to him but also shows how he just killed it in that role.
That's all he played in DS9. A plain simple tailor.
He also played in the movie Cobra as the by the book Detective who did not like how Cobra played by Stallone did things as a cop .

Yep Clint was well known as being the dude that did all or almost all his own stunts. He earned his huge pay checks and was the real deal for his fans.
He did what it was sensible for him to do and what he was allowed to do, Buddy Van Horn was his stunt double on this film and a number of others.
Most people don’t understand that Clint is as important in movie history as Alfred Hitchcock

Andrew Robinson was a great villain, the scene on the bus making the kids sing row row your boat is top tier crazy and the kids looked frightened of him.

If you notice the first time Harry delivers his "Do I feel lucky?" speech to the bank robber his tone is more of a joking manner but when he says it to Scorpio he is barely controlling his rage.

This the second series of movies after he did the man with no name westerns that established Clint Eastwood as such an iconic actor. All the Dirty Harry movies are very much worth watching. Also in this series there is a lot of social aspect to them. It really is true that Harry is not a racist despite some of the dialogue in the movies. Yes he is very abrasive which is part of why he is so loved by audiences but he is really a good and honest detective.
If you notice the difference in his two "do I feel lucky" lines , they show two completely different demeanors. In the first one with the robber, he gives an almost amused smirk. In the end one with Scorpio, he gives a malevolent, teeth grinding sneer.

US police agencies carried revolvers for the most part until the 90s (where they transitioned to semi-automatic pistols). Harry’s Smith and Wesson .44 magnum would not be normal carry for most police agencies (maybe up in Alaska)?
Andy Robinson (Scorpio) was typecast after this movie (and had a hard time getting roles).
You might like the sequels (some good one liners and interesting story lines). magnum Force is the second movie in the series (there were 4 total)
Not sure but I think the standard weapon for police back then was a 38.

With the racial slurs scene, not condoning the use of those words, but I took it as Harry being sarcastic, saying it sarcastically to make fun of all the other detectives being racist, knowing they wouldn't notice he's being sarcastic.
Harry is not racist - correct. They were "hazing" the new Mexican American detective. This was an effective way to desensitize a newbie detective to what he could expect in the field from lowlifes. You could clearly see Harry wink to DiGeorgio when Chico couldn't see him.
Clint did have a stunt double, his name was Buddy Van Horn (1928-2021), the two of them had a working relationship that lasted 43 years, the first time was on _Coogan's Bluff_ in 1968 and the last time was on _J. Edgar_ in 2011. Buddy even got to direct Clint in three movies, those being _Any Which Way You Can_ (1980), _The Dead Pool_ (1988) (which was the fifth Dirty Harry movie) and _Pink Cadillac_ (1989)
Mobile phones were still a good 25 years away at this point. It is one of the joys of watching these old films, seeing just how they communicated to progress a plot. Lots of payphones

One of my favorite Eastwood movies is "Heartbreak Ridge" and it would so awesome if you reacted to it. You are right Lauren, the killer in this movie is loosely based on the Zodiac killer that was terrorizing California at the time the movie was made. If you haven't watched the movie "Zodiac" starring Robert Downey Junior, I also recommend it. Awesome reaction as always.
Good job on connecting the Zodiac Killer to this. The Zodiac Killer's spree was in '68-'69 right before this movie so it was on everyone's mind. Btw, check out Zodiac (2007) staring Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downy Jr and Marc Ruffalo.
When this film was made .38 revolvers were still standard issue for police.
When it comes to Clint Eastwood movies the "Man With No Name" trilogy A.K.A. the "Dollars Trilogy" is a must: Fist Fill Of Dollars (1964), For A Few Dollars More (1965) and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (1966).
But I'm going to make a suggestion to see before you watch them. Watch Yojimbo (1961) staring Toshirô Mifune, because A Fist Full of Dollars is actually a Western remake of Yojimbo which is a Samurai movie. Now, if you want to see a very young Clint Eastwood, he has an uncredited roll in Revenge Of The Creature (1955) which is a sequel to, The Creature From The Black Lagoon. Maybe for October? Watch the Old School classic monster movies.🤷♂

Great movie picks. But Clint Eastwood's first screen appearence was Tarantula ( 1955 ) , also a Jack Arnold film.

4 more Dirty Harry movies, each one is pretty good in its own right. Plus, Clint has a number of other movies through the years he's well known for...Firefox, Space Cowboys, Heartbreak Ridge, Unforgiven, Million Dollar Baby, High Plains Drifter...to name a few.
Revolvers were standard issue until the mid 80s. This movie and the next 2 were responsible for a spike in the sale of .44 magnums. Lauren, always a joy to watch with you. Thank you for everything you do.😁🥰❤️

Josie Wales is great. I don't think it's considered a good film by most people but I like The Eiger Sanction. Clint is a little different character for that time in his life and I find the story very interesting.
The actor who played Scorpio is Andrew Robinson, and yes, he was excellent in that role. Years later, he portrayed the former Cardassian spy Garak in Star Trek: Deep Space 9, one of my favorite characters in that show.
Also, Scorpio is based on the Zodiac Killer.
The old Clint movies either the Westerns or Dirty Harry, they are all good with lots of "real" action. Not a lot of CGI back then. I was surprised when you started talking about him using Iron sights, very cool, not everyone knows the difference. Would love to see you do more of his movies. Gran Torino was an outstanding movie and agree with you on that one.
There was no CGI . There were no home PC's no windows no net. It is called acting

Hard to believe Dirty Harry was Andrew Robinson's (Scorpio) first film role. Pretty impressive since he was apparently picked for the role by the director and Eastwood himself. Interesting that you'd mention the Zodiac Killer since his character was largely based on him. While he's done many impressive roles since this film he'll always be Elim Garak from DS9 to me.
Andrew Robinson was a victim of his own success. His portrayal of the character was so powerful, that for a couple of years afterward he had trouble getting considered for other roles.
Great reaction! I am impressed that you made the Zodiac connection so quick. They did get inspiration from that for this story. Also . . . back in this day--70s--most police departments had revolvers as standard issue weapons. However, most were .38, and most of the detectives or inspectors carried a .38 snub nose, which was easier to conceal. Harry Callahan, on the other hand, is known for carrying a canon, a .44 Magnum. I STRONGLY recommend watching ALL the movies in the Dirty Harry series. There are a total of five. And the fifth one has a couple of huge stars who were just starting out back then.

Don't forget the '44 AutoMag that some ace gunsmith made up especially for Clint for the Dirty Harry series, the only thing more impressive than his S&W Model 29. Interesting story: the gunsmith that custom built the AutoMag assigned a serial # of "Clint-1" to it. I believe the AutoMag had a 300-grain bullet, whereas the normal 44-mag bullet was 240 grains.
Dirty Harry was the template Judge Dredd. Dredd in the comics used to live in Rowdy Yates block, another role Eastwood played.
The sequel to this movie is called Magnum Force, and it's even better than this movie was. Can't wait to see you react to the next movie. (No spoilers)

Magnum Force is WAY better and the best Dirty Harry movie. I even like it as much as Unforgiven.
Nah it's almost as good as the first but not quite.
The Scorpio Killer was played by Andrew Robinson, who, like so many great villain actors, is an absolute sweetheart in real life. He absolutely hates guns, and even pretending to scare children was an absolutely heart-wrenching experience for him. And yet he pulled off one of THE defining villain portrayals of the century. A stellar actor, whose combined filmography is regrettably sparse. His most famous movie, besides this one, is probably "Hellraiser". Yes - THAT "Hellraiser". Which obviously is a great movie too.
The robber on the ground with the mustache, to whom Harry addresses the first "do you feel lucky"-speech, is Clint Eastwood's friend Albert Popwell, who would appear in all the first four "Dirty Harry" movies, as different characters and a bigger role for every movie. He would have appeared in the fifth and final movie in the series too, had he not been busy with the theater at the time.
"Dirty Harry" turned Clint Eastwood, at the age of 41, from a moderately successful actor to a bona fide superstar overnight. The movie was immensely successful, but also heavily criticized for supposedly promoting fascism. The plot of the next movie in the series, "Magnum Force", is very likely a response to this. Watch that one too, and find out! (On a personal note, I myself am a die-hard socialist and still think all the movies in the series, and this first one in particular, are great. The racial slurs were used ironically, at least by Harry, as you may have realised - but admittedly, that wouldn't be done today and has aged more than a little poorly.)
Harry used the racial slurs as a bit of sarcastic push against the machine. I honestly believe that the character of Dirty Harry Callahan was very progressive and accommodating of EVERY demographic. He just HATED criminals. Andy Robinson was phenomenal in his role. One of the most incredible villain portrayals of ALL TIME!!!
Andrew Robinson (Scorpio) had a hard time finding any other roles besides complete maniacs.
He legitimately freaked out secretaries when he'd show up for auditions and be sent away being told the role was cast already, because they didn't want him just hanging around waiting.
Was often in 70's detective shows as "villain of the week", wasn't in anything else big until a decade later in Poltergeist, where he wasn't the bad guy...but everybody kept waiting for him to be.
Being cast as “plain simple Garak” helped him quite a bit as well.

Great reaction and reflection on this film. And you might really like Clint's westerns, beginning with "A Fistful of Dollars", which more or less created the genre of the spaghetti western. The "Dollars" trilogy by Sergio Leone is an absolute joy to watch.

On the other hand, I admit nuance is difficult in written media.
That aside, I think the most fun I had with Andrew Robinson's other roles was him being a member of the ill-fated fishing party in "Shoot To Kill". Casting well known actors who usually played the baddies was a genius move.
The jump from the bridge to the top of the bus really was Clint. Most of the rest of the bus scene was Buddy Van Horn, Eastwood's stunt double for several movies who went on to direct later ones. I think if Clint were going to do the whole bus ride he probably would have done it without the big ol' sunglasses to make it easier to tell it was really him.

The actor who plays Scorpio real name is Andrew Robinson. His career got a huge boost in the late nineties when his supposed to be one time appearance alien character Garak became a fan favorite on the Star Trek series DS9. His character became a regular cast member due to fans loving his exiled former black ops spy for the Cardassian government. He is now a favored cultural icon ..he and Garak are now household names.

The pistol he carries is a Smith & Wesson Model 29, chambered in .44 Remington Magnum. It was a new model that had just come out, and after the movie, Smith & Wesson couldn't make enough of them. That and the .44 Magnum became legend ! Build on an S&W N frame , it fit a man of Clint's build. He stood 6 foot 4 inches, and has large hands.

The most unique aspect of this film, is that Clint Eastwood would bring back actors that he worked with and the actors that were in this film,Clint Eastwood cast them in his future films over the years.
Ah, that sweet Lalo Schifrin music, it always elevates a movie. Second DH, Magnum Force, is one of my favorite action movies of the 70's.
Trivia! The corpse of Ann Mary Deacon (the girl Scorpio buried) was played by Debralee Scott who went on to gain fame as a regular in "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" and as a recurring character in "Welcome Back Kotter." It's an uncredited role, but in a magazine interview, she talked with self deprecating humor about it being her first movie role.
Hopefully, we'll get Kelly's Heroes. A great Clint film with an amazing ensemble cast.

You are spot on about Scorpio. In fact, the actor, Andy Robinson, used to get HATE mail from people who were so disgusted about sick and evil the character was!
In fact Andy Robinson's movie career faded after his Scorpio role, nobody wanted him, he worked on tv and theatre mostly, until he was hired for the Star Trek Deep Space Nine Garak's role, one of the finest performances I seen on a show.

Lauren there are a tonne of brilliant movies made in the 70s. It's one of the greatest decades of film making. You should definitely check out more of them. Off the top of my head there is Dirty Harry, Alien, Halloween, Jaws, A Clockwork Orange, Enter The Dragon, The Exorcist, Invasion of the Body Snatchers

You need to check out the 1st movie Clint Eastwood directed, "Play Misty For Me" (1971). He starred & directed which was a risk for the studio & the start of his Oscar winning Director career. Jessica Walters & Donna Miles co-stars. Eastwood plays a jazz radio station D.J./host who get involved in a thriller. Set around the Monterrey Jazz Festival.
I don't think Dirty Harry is passive-aggressive .... just aggressive, in a kickass sort of way. 😂
The actor playing Scorpio is a haunt from way back. He's known for roles like this one. He did monsters really well.
You’ve got a sharp eye! That was Clint jumping off the bridge onto the school bus. No stunt man. Just one badass film maker.
I grew up in Northern California in the seventies, so the external shots of San Francisco in this film are always a treat to see for me. Clint Eastwood lives near Monterrey, California, about an hour drive south down the coast from San Francisco. I suspect that he preferred making movies at locations close enough to home that he could take time off on the weekends. But that's speculation. One interesting trivial regarding Dirty Harry, five years or so after it was released, two brothers in Northern California kidnapped a school bus full of kids, buried the whole bus with the kids inside it in a quarry, and demanded a ransom for their return. The ordeal lasted a month or so and the kids survived. The story was a really big deal for a couple of years. The kidnappers died in prison, iirc. The episode was almost life imitates art.
They originally were going to film it in Seattle or some other place, but as they went through San Francisco on their way to scout locations, they realized, that San Francisco is just such an awesome backdrop with it's varied landscape & architecture, that it not only looked good, it could save time and money, so they were like, "Why not film it here?".
These films were a whole genre back in the 70’s. Death Wish was another popular “vendetta” franchise. It was a time of skyrocketing crime when the Police, the Courts, the Politicians would do nothing. Kinda like now. “Dirty Harry ‘23” anyone?

Having mentioned Alcatraz another Clint Eastwood classic is "Escape From Alcatraz" (1979) which is a true story and of course "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly" from 1966 which is up there with the best movies ever made! 😁......also worth a mention the actor that played the Scorpio Andrew Robinson played a major role in Deep Space 9 as Garak!

The actor who played Scorpio is Andrew Robinson. ... he played the lead role in Liberace. He also was the father in HellRaiser.. He was also in the famous Star Trek : Tv series Deep Space 9 as a guest star from time to time. But this is by far probably his most famous role.

Thanks for the great reaction Laurenn. Dirty Harry is by far one of my favorite cop/crime films of all time. It greatly influenced many genre films that came after especially LETHAL WEAPON & DIE HARD. A young Arnold Schwarzenegger apparently saw the film many times and has said it had a tremendous impact on him.
Even The Simpsons made fun of Dirty Harry way back in early episodes with a character called McGarnigle. Classic!
I was born 5 years after this film came out and wished i could've seen it at a theater back then. Please continue watching the rest of them.

Andrew Robinson, who played Scorpio, has spoken publicly about the scene in which he kidnaps a school bus full of children. In an interview with The A.V. Club in 2015, Robinson recalled his discomfort with the scene, saying that the children on the bus hadn't been properly prepared for what was going to happen. He said the scene was shot in a rush, and he felt that the young actors on the bus were not given enough guidance about what to expect. He said that he tried to make sure that the children felt safe and reassured throughout filming, but that ultimately he was troubled by the fact that they were put in a situation where they didn't fully understand what was happening.
I would recommend the 1966 Clint Eastwood movie "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly." "Dirty Harry" is a good movie, but "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" is one of the greatest movies ever made.

I 2nd The Eiger Sanction, it's sooooo Clint Eastwood. Also, it's a rare John Williams soundtrack that isn't Jaws or Star Wars, etc.
Thunderbolt and Lightfoot with Jeff Bridges, and Kelly's Heroes. Where Eagles Dare is also fun.
I vote against both of those as mediocre fare compared to so many other Eastwood films.

Top 10 GOAT movie for sure. Eastwood made Harry such an iconic character that inspired countless other cop shows and movies, but no one has ever equalled.

Also, about the ratings system before 1984: There was a WIDE space between PG and R. There was no PG-13, yet. This movie, IIRC, squeeked into the R rating because of the "Bus Scene" (where children were threatened), and the level of violence. Back then, a PG rated movie could show limited frontal nudity. If you watch the Original Planet of the Apes, you'll note that they showed full naked butts, and that movie was rated G. On a similar note, there were some horror movies that garnered an X rating because of the gore involved. X didn't just mean "pron". "Return of the Living Dead" was a notable movie that originally had an X rating, without any sexual content at all. "The Toxic Avenger" was cut to pieces to get it down from an X rating to an R rating. It was later released as "Unrated" in it's original form, as was Return of the Living Dead. This, of course, once the PG-13 rating came to be, the ratings system changed completely. "Unrated" became acceptable to show in theaters, but it literally meant "Adults Only". Then, sometime later, NC-17 came around.... but Unrated is still better, IMHO.
It was a VERY different time. I'm so glad I lived during it!

Conan the Barbarian had to be toned down to receive an R rating. Oliver Stone's original script was so violent that it was gonna be X rated.
It's almost impossible to go wrong with Clint Eastwood so just do more of his classic films and you'll have a great time, he's a true icon. I really enjoyed this reaction and the appreciation you had for this one.
Good reaction and review! Other 70s films I'd recommend for you that I've not seen mentioned here (although I've not read all of the comments) are "Duel" (1971), "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three" (1974) and "Westworld" (1973) (where the recent TV series got its inspiration from). They're not Eastwood films, but they are classics and all have great plots with a good smattering of action and suspense.
Action/violence sequences in 70s films when they came were a lot more down and dirty feeling, but by the 80s and onwards it became more kind of stylised and slick. Somehow, the rawness of the violence in 70s movies often makes them hit harder (no pun intended), as you saw from this film.
If you notice the first time he says those lines he says "And WOULD blow your head clean off" and in the second one he says "And WILL blow your head clean off." I think that was a subtle change in the line indicating that, of course, he knew he had 1 more bullet.
Clint Eastwood indeed did that bus stunt. His longtime stunt double Buddy Van Horn commented on Eastwood's dedication to doing his own stunts. "I've tried to talk him out of it sometimes, but not very successfully most of the time," Van Horn said. "He went 'n' did 'em anyway, several of 'em. He's been banged up a few times"
Andrew Robinson (Scorpio) is an excellent character actor. He's especially good at menacing.
Prior to watching your Watch Along for this on Patreon, my only knowledge of Dirty Harry was the parody that WWE did with The Undertaker lol This movie was more wild and intense than I expected, and your reactions were great. There's a bunch of sequels to this, but apparently only the first two sequels are worth watching. It would be cool if you did a Watch Along for them at the very least

Unlike modern franchises, Dirty Harry did it right, every sequel is worth watching.
Contrast the weirdly crazy look in Clint Eastwood's eyes in the first "Do you feel lucky , Punk?" versus the pure rage in the second "Do you feel lucky, punk?" at the end of the movie.

Scorpio's real name is Charles Davis. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, and killed his grandparents at a very young age. He was later sent to a mental hospital, but apparently escaped and moved to San Francisco. It is known that the groundskeeper at the local football stadium allowed him to live in a very small room within the stadium. At some point, Scorpio decided to go on a killing spree, all whilst extorting San Francisco.

Clint Eastwood has SO MANY awesome movies. The Gauntlet, Pale Rider, Unforgiven, Josey Wales, High Plains Drifter, The Good, The Bad, The Ugly series, Hang Em High, Kelly's Heros, many many more.
I started being a cop in the mid to late 80's and they still issued revolvers (38 Special). But, some departments would let you carry your own firearm (semi- automatic pistols) if you certified and bought your own ammo and holster.
I can only imagine how much police/law enforcement culture has changed since then.
Man, Andy Robinson, Scorpio, is SO funny in this. When he's on the bus, yelling at all the kids,, I burst out laughing when I first saw it. He was so great on Star Trek: DS9.

A little trivia: Singer/actor Frank Sinatra was considered for the part of Dirty Harry. Andrew Robinson is well-known for his role in the series Star Trek Deep Space 9. In an interview he said Don Siegel asked him to play Scorpio. After reading the script, Andy went to Siegel and said he wasn't right for the part. The script called for a large man with a shaved head. Siegel said he knew that but he wanted Scorpio to look like a choir boy. Andy also said that he wished he had a dime for every time a fan pointed their finger at him and did the "do you feel lucky" line.

Also: The dad of a friend of a friend in high school was in the USAF Strategic Air Command. He was a B-52 commander who was put in a combat readiness inspector job. To explicitly describe his serious attitude toward his work, he had a framed 8x10 of Dirty Harry on his office door with, “Feel lucky today?” written on it.
if you notice the do you feel lucky line in the beginning he says it playful, cheerful, but at the end he says it with hate and anger and that he is fed up with the process of the criminal has rights.

california uses the term "inspector", in place of "detective", which is used in most of the u.s. most european countries also use inspector. since dirty harry is in cali, we have inspector callahan. revolvers were standard police issue in most of the country until late70-early80s more and more places were switching to semi-autos. the .38 special was standard from the 1910s-70s, and it would have been unusual for any cop to carry a .44mag. in fact thats one of the top 2-3 defining features of this complex character. revolvers are still optional for officers almost everywhere, but today the chosen revolver would be a 7 or 8 shot .357. standard issue is typically 9mm. the rest of the dirty harry series is worth seeing, but its a bit hit-and-miss. worth watching but dont expect them all to be wonderful. clint has played other cops besides harry, for instance "coogan's bluff", or "in the line of fire". when you get to his westerns, while you will LOVE "UNFORGIVEN", i wouldnt start with that because it was late in his career, and i think it will work better for you to appreciate both the actor and the character if youve seen him younger in a western. while the most popular of his early westerns are the "dollars trilogy", im going to suggest "high plains drifter". he's totally badass in that, and its only 1 movie rather than 3 (the trilogy) to see before "unforgiven". other good eastwood films include "million dollar baby" of his late stuff, and "escape from alcatraz" from the 70s.
Glad you've begun a new series. Harry was an abrasive anti-social guy and not affected by anyone's feelings. I don't remember us getting his back story. Clint once said Harry was the only cop he'd play. I understand what he meant, but there are other officers in his filmography. Revolvers? All police used to carry revolvers. The big switch to autos happened in the 80s. Harry does use a 44 auto mag in SUDDEN IMPACT. In THE DEAD POOL, his revolver is back.

Dear Laurenn, in 1971 when this movie was released, police all carried revolvers. Semi-automatics (Colt 1911s) were used by the military. Harry Callahan wanted a heavier bullet, so he chose a larger revolver than most officers carried. Specifically, he wanted a bullet that would go through automobiles, and still disable/kill the ones driving the car. The .44 magnum cartridge is very accurate for the first shot, but because of recoil, second and third shots are more difficult to shoot as well as the first shot.
Andy Robinson’s portrayal of Scorpio was so convincing that he received death threats after the film was released.
This is without a doubt one of Clint Eastwood's best movies. I absolutely love the scene where Harry stabs Scorpio in the leg. The look on his face and his scream makes me laugh every single time. My personal favorite is Sudden Impact. Massive thanks to John Milius for writing the screenplay and Lalo Schifrin for composing the score.
