He also would flinch every time he fired his gun, they would have to cut away as soon as he squeezed the trigger. He’s such a great actor to make Hans seem perfectly comfortable with firearms. I’m not sure why he was like that but maybe because there’s not really a gun culture in the UK it was foreign to him,Idk

Growing up in the 80s, I only knew Bruce Willis from a TV show called “Moonlighting” with Cybil Shepard. When this movie came out it launched him into the action star we know him as now. This movie proves one thing; that an action hero can look like your Dad and still kick ass. I mean, he’s no Arnold or Stallone. He’s more of an everyday hero. Hope you keep watching the rest. The first 3 movie are great. I would say that 3 is my favorite.

I get kind of teary-eyed when Al kills Karl. Weird I know . If you really think about it, it is one hell of a redemption arch. Al is a good cop that's broken by a terrible mistake. When the chance comes where he must protect his partner, he doesn't hesitate. He gets his personal honor back, and he can finally heal.

The accent that Hans puts on when he first meets John face to face is hilarious lmao RIP to Alan Rickman. Such a great actor.
I love how human John McClane is. He has personal problems, and he actually gets his ass kicked a little. It sets him apart from other characters that were played by his action movie peers (Arnold, Stallone, etc).

I only mention it 'cause I joked with him I was gonna drop a dime at the next meeting, like, every time there was a meeting, lol. He was a lead man so he had to attend all meetings. It was clear as to why Holly regained respect for John once again. He truly have a damn about her, he went through all that chaos not just to save himself but her and the hostages too.
Hans’ face in the final shot of him falling is legendary.
Not Christmasy enough? I beg to differ, there’s tons of Christmas trees and decorations throughout, carols hummed by characters, the word Christmas is dropped many times as well as many other Christmas references, the music also has jingle bells incorporated throughout. Also what’s the plot? A man is coming to visit his family on Christmas Eve and invited to a Christmas party first, it just so happens someone decides to screw it up. So Die Hard is a Christmas movie, just not a family one.

Fun fact. According the official lore of the British Army's 57th Regiment of Foot (which is now absorbed as part of the Queen's Regiment), the term "die hard," meaning someone who, contrary to all reason, refuses to give up, originated at the Battle of Albuera in 1811. The 57th was on the verge of being routed by the French. They were so close to breaking that French commander, Marshal Soult, said "I penetrated their center. I turned their flank. They were defeated. The day was mine."
Making matters worse, the 57th's commander, Col. William Inglis, was hit in the chest and neck. Though bleeding badly and in great pain, Inglis refused to leave his troops and would not allow himself to be evacuated from the field. Remaining by the regimental colors, he exhorted his men to hold their ground and fight to the end with the words "DIE HARD 57th! DIE HARD!" Despite taking heavy losses, the 57th did hold until British reinforcements finally arrived and drove the French back. Since then, the 57th have been nicknamed "The Die Hards." There's even a song about them called "The Jolly Die Hards."
After the battle, Marshal Soult would complain "They were defeated. The day was mine. But THEY DID NOT KNOW HOW TO RUN AWAY!" And the British Army's after action report stated that all casualties of the 57th were wounded in the front indicating that they were hit facing the enemy - not running from them.
There is evidence that the term "die hard" may have been coined before the Battle of Albuera. However, whether or not the 57th originated the term, their stubborn courage and determination at Albuera absolutely earned them the nickname "Die Hards."

The face Alan Rickman makes when he falls from the building is real.
The stunt was him falling from a short distance with a net under him for a full camera zoom on his face and the fall from higher up, when you see the body falling from afar is a stunt guy.
They told Rickman, the was attached then let go that they would count to three and then let go.
But McTiernan (the director) wanted realism in Alan's face so he let him go at 2 when he was not prepared.
Obviously, Alan Rickman was taken aback, not expecting to fall sooner and the look of surprise he has is 100% real.

    80's Christmas action classic
A strange fact is that this movie has 4 Christmas songs and takes place at a Christmas party, but the famous 1954 White Christmas only has 2 Christmas songs and most of the movie doesn't take place at Christmas.
I hope you had a Wonderful Christmas holiday Lauren.
I'm sure 2023 will be a another fantastic year of reactions.
Love the fun, upbeat and curious attitude/energy you bring to your reactions.
Allen Rickman (RIP)was a very good actor. I suggest seeing him in the Comedy Galaxy Quest 1999 Sigourney Weaver from Alien/Aliens is also in it. If you haven't seen it of course.

    YES!!!
    BEST CHRISTMAS MOVIE EVER!!
Before Bruce Willis was cast as John McClane, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford, Kevin Costner, James Caan, Michael Douglas, Tom Cruise, Mel Gibson, Richard Gere, Charlie Sheen, Patrick Swayze, William Hurt, Mickey Rourke, Jeff Bridges, Nick Nolte, Kurt Russell, Sylvester Stallone, Clint Eastwood, Paul Newman Warren Beatty Ryan O'Neal Dustin Hoffman Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, and Charles Bronson were considered for the role.
For the cop Al Powell, Laurence Fishburne, Denzal Washington, Gene Hackman, Robert Duvall, and Wesley Snipes were considered.
The movie is based on the 1979 novel, Nothing Lasts Forever which was the sequel to the movie The Detective which starred Frank Sinatra. In the novel he is named Joe Leland rather than John McClane.
The ending was a lot darker than the movie itself: SPOILERS!
McLane shoots Gruber in the chest, but not before he grabs Holly by her sweater where they fall out of the window to their deaths.
Karl does survive and starts to shoot at police and reporters with an M-60 Machine Gun.
Powell kills Karl with an M-16 rifle , where a stray bullet from Karl's gun strikes McClane in the leg, where he is put in an ambulance but dies of his injury.

Trivia: Alan Rickman was dropped, not from a building but a platform and then screen screened into the shot. McTeirnan wanted a real look of surprise from Rickman so without telling him he planned in dropping him. Originally he was just suppose to act it out. The look on Rickman’s face is genuine.

Another fun fact: The firehose drop down the side of the building was performed by Bruce Willis and it was the first scene he filmed. The big name action stars all declined to do Die Hard, so the studio got Willis cheap. They filmed the stunt first so that if he died, they still had time and budget to recast and reshoot. Film making has changed a little since the 80's lol.

This was the good thing that when CGI did not exist in those years, the special effects in the movies looked real, because it was filmed real or simulated with practical effects and scale models and explosives, like the terrace of the building when it explodes, it is a scale terrace built to explode it, the same with the police tank, it is a miniature scale model and the explosion looks real.

Love this movie and your reaction to it Lauren ! and just so you know not to take away from how hard Bruce Willis worked on this movie , he absolutely did , but the director did let him wear flesh coloured foot protectors for many of the running scenes 🦶 i believe this added to how the audience would feel his pain in fact one of the taglines for Die Hard 2 when it came out was
'' HE'S BACK AND THIS TIME HE HAS SHOES ON !! '' 😄
Die Hard is a must watch this time of year and your reaction just adds to it
hope you had an awesome CHRISTMAS ! 😀🎅🙏
