In case you didn't know, I'm a 90's kid so I grew up watching actors Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, and Adam Sandler. I've seen tons of Jim Carrey movies but not this one! Lauren, this reaction was sooo good. I loved the little recaps throughout. Of course, your reaction to this movie was the gold. Jim Carrey got to demonstrate his gift as an actor in this, much like Robin Williams in Dead Poets Siciety. Truman was quite inspiring because he wouldn't let go until he found the truth...and then, bowed out with a smile. Lauren, an amazing reaction and wonderful presentation. Always bringing gold. Yes, Jim Carrey and Robin Williams are the only 2 comedians who I like really. Not only do they both blow you away with their comedic talent, they’re both amazing dramatic actors also. No other comedians are as versatile as either of them.
If you haven’t seen Good Will Hunting, I’d recommend it. It was Robin Williams’ Oscar winning role, he won for best supporting actor
9:27 If you'll notice, they had to bring in the Travel Agent character so quickly that, when her "scene" began, she still had that tissue protecting her costume from the makeup artist, so she had to casually remove it as if it was completely normal. 😆

everyone who reacts to this film nowadays discovers the reality themselves, but when this was first coming out the advertising didn't make anything a secret, we all knew what was happening when we went into the theaters.
Yep, the whole movie was revealed in the trailer. There was no other way to advertise it and make it intriguing, I guess.
I enjoyed trying to piece together what was going on. Glad I didn't see the trailer, just kind of jumped in the deep end! Thanks for watching :)
I never saw the advertisements for this movie before I saw it in the theater the weekend it came out. But the plot is given to you the 1st 10 min of the movie so there really isn’t anything to figure out except whether or not Truman finds out.

I was just thinking how wild this movie must be walking into it completely blind. The trailers let us in on it when the movie originally came out. I kind of envy people that are just now watching it.
At the same time, re-watching it as an adult I realized how much darker the movie seems now. Back then, through a kid’s lens, it was just another fun Jim Carrey movie.
When this movie came out, we didnt use the word "content."
BUT...that's the modern word for it. And it's the PERFECT word for the Trumann Show...."content."

Your entire reality was fabricated for content, amusement and ratings. The people in his fabricated life from his parents, friends and his wife were all paid actors. Yet even when he realized that it was all fake he still bowed out and smiled, I nearly cried when that happened. Thank you for reviewing this movie.
I normally dislike open-ended endings. I think they're a sign the writer couldn't come up with a good ending and all arguments to the contrary are excuses.
But this one I like. We don't get to see what happens to Truman after he escapes the set because he finally has his privacy.
His best friend is practically as much a prisoner as he is. Formatted from his earliest childhood to play comedy without really having the notion of good and evil because he too had to live his entire life locked up with Truman because he never really knew when we would need him to intervene in his life. This guy also has no idea what real life is like and he may also have difficulty integrating into life outside.
As for Truman's father, even if he is not the real father, he raised him for years so let's imagine his feelings at the moment when the writers of the show had to tell him that he would have to give up the kid he had to consider all this as his son to traumatize him in order to keep him locked in this show for years to come. I don't think he had much choice in doing all that either.

This movie was promoted as a movie about a man unknowingly on a TV show. It was at the beginning of the reality TV boom and people were worried about being spied on. This movie makes for an interesting reaction when you don't get the plot beforehand like you did when it came out. You got it pretty quick though Laurenn, very smart😊😊😊
I really enjoy watching blind reactions to this as it really changes the tone, but also it's impressive that it still works and the main crux of the movie becomes a decent twist. I kinda think they meant for it to be unknown that it's a TV show but couldn't figure out how to market it otherwise maybe.
13:20 He wasn't happy that his father was alive, he was happy because he no longer has a reason to be afraid of the water, he can finally sail away and leave the island.
The movie has deeper levels. Notice how the characters who are audience members of the show within the movie are proxies for the real audience of the movie, and are depicted as cheering for Truman, just like you are. Then at the climax, Truman escapes, they're exuberant, like you are. Then it only takes a few seconds before they're onto the next thing, Truman forgotten.
The shot of the boat hitting the wall of the set is still my favorite shot in any movie ever. Just perfectly done.
I remember seeing that in the theater. I was 12 and a huge Carrey fan. I went into the movie thinking it was going to be another slapstick Carrey movie. But the laughs weren't coming from his usual over the top comedy and I realized soon into it that this was going to be a bit more of a serious movie. And the whole thing just blew my mind. My mom was equally intrigued. But when that boat hit the wall, we both started cracking up. Just so unexpected. On repeat viewings, you can definitely notice that it is a wall because of the water line. But first viewing, you don't notice that. Then he quickly silences the laughs from the wall once he starts pounding on it and you catch glimpses of the pain in his face. And then the conversation with Christof. So well done by Ed Harris with Jim delivering that final line and bow. That ending stuck with me. So good.
This Comedy / Drama movie was just EPIC for Jim Carey. This was about as serious as Jim gets, and he absolutely NAILS it.
Have you seen the tv series Kidding (2018-2020) ? It's dark and sometimes surreal and shows Jim Carrey's abilities in a serious lead role (though still comedic, so tragicomedy?)

This movie is so interesting in a meta-commentary way. Looking at the world today when we have not "trapped" ourselves but we put so much of our lives in the public sphere for anyone to look at. Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, etc... Seeing how the world, in a way, decided to do it themselves rather than being forced like Truman. And yes, that includes me. Loved the reaction and look forward to more. Fun side story... The town/set in the movie was filmed in Seaside Florida. My family used to vacation there every summer and I got to walk through all the sets as they were being put up. The taller buildings were just faces, for the most part. The scene in the grocery store was filmed at the little market in town, Modica Market. The houses and streets are all the real thing, though not sure about interior shots. Those might have been stages. Anyway, it's a cool memory from my early teens.
Truth is Truman show is real. CIA and deep state has put us all in a truman show by controlling all forms of media. when you do that, you are essentially inside a global set.
They named the Truman syndrome after this film. It is a syndrome as you can imagine that revolves around believing that you're the star of your own show and nobody else is real.
If you want to see a very underrated Jim Carrey movie that's also more of a drama, check out The Majestic. If you haven't seen it already. It's great and Jim Carrey is so good in it. It's a shame more people don't talk about it.
The reason why the Majestic was “underrated” was because it was a flop. It was a great story and plot, but the movie was boring as hell honestly

This is my favorite Jim Carrey movie and one of my all-time favorite movies. It's absolutely brilliant and was also ahead of it's time.
Yes, it’s his most popular dramatic movie. But I wouldn’t say it was ahead of it’s time. There were reality shows on MTV in the 90s
I love Weir movies and this is a personal favorite. For another great Jim Carrey dramatic performance, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND is mindbending and heartbreaking and beautiful. And Kate Winslet is awesome as always. Thanks for this. I saw it in the theater and several times since, so it's always fun to re-experience that first viewing vicariously.

Truman never signed a contract as an adult to be on the show. His share of the profits and such must be astronomical.
In truth, though, certainly when they stopped them with the fake chemical spill, you would’ve seen a criminal case form. In the real world for law would’ve stepped in long before then.
The Truman Show is one of my all-time favorite movies. I was lucky enough to watch it in the theater as a teenager. The fact that Jim Carrey and the movie got snubbed for Best Actor and Best Picture is still so ridiculous to me. It seemed like just science fiction back then, but with the way technology has progressed, a scaled-down version of this could absolutely happen now. It portrays a special kind of paranoia. It makes you want to question your surroundings; how much of what we think is reality is actually real? Are you being watched? Is your family even your family? What "truths" you know are actually lies? Truman's gradual process of noticing things and slowly breaking it all down is always fun to watch. There are lots of little details that you'll only catch on multiple rewatches, like the "You Are Now Leaving Seahaven Island! Are You Sure It's A Good Idea?" sign just before he drives across the bridge.
The production is really interesting; several things were changed between script drafts. One of the early scripts was much darker, with the fake setting being in New York, the escape being longer and more violent, including Truman shooting down a helicopter, going through the exit door and sneaking out of the studio lot, holding a flare gun to a tour guide's head, and an in-person confrontation Christof. The sentence, "You never had a camera in my head" was always there, but it was in a darker context; originally, Truman said it as he was about to throw himself and Christof from the top of a building. In the movie's official companion book, it's revealed that the guy in the bathtub died when his TV fell in the water. The Nick At Nite promotional featurette reveals that Marlon drinks all the time as a coping mechanism for what his life has become. You should check out the deleted scenes, too; one shows that Marlon actually found Truman during the search at the end, but deliberately let him escape. Regardless, there's no way the show would've lasted; the actors are terrible at improvising under unpredictable conditions, and Truman's natural curiosity was going to win out over fear in the long run. It's a great message about embracing one's nature, not denying it, taking risks, and seeking truth. And yeah, that's one of the best endings I've ever seen.
One of the great philosophical movie stories. There is SO much content. You could write a book on the ideas that this wonderful film presents.

I loved your reaction to this, Laurenn. It's a commentary on how far the media might go left unchecked, the sad thing about this is that you could see it happening for real, I wouldn't be at all surprised if I learned that some company made a series like this.
One thing I didn't realize about this movie until today was that all of his viewers were happy that he realized he was in a fake world, and cheered when he got out. No one was sad that the Truman Show was no more. So they watched each show hoping that this was the episode where he figured it out and escaped. So, while I wouldn't watch such a show, I don't judge the viewers in the movie as harshly as I did before today. And that's an interesting thing, when I watch someone react to The Truman Show, I'm watching someone watch people watching The Truman show. That's a lot of layers.

Went back and looked at a post of that scene. All these years, I had taken his pounding the water as him being mad that Truman was leaving the show. Listening carefully now several times, I hear how he’s saying “He made it!” I must have thought he was saying, “Oh, shit!” or such. I even remember thinking in the theater that he was the lone jerk of the crowd following the show, mad that it was over. It would make sense to there would be a few people out there like that.
I still say the mannerism seems more one of frustration than celebration. I’ll chalk it up to bad directing.

Another awesome serious Jim Carrey movie is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. One if his best performances ever.
The Truman Show is reality TV pushed to its logical entirely messed up extreme conclusion. Reality TV was starting to take off in the late 90s and continues to this day with the likes of Big Brother, the various Real Housewives shows/spinoffs and a mountain of similar shows. Obviously the live streaming that the likes of TH-cam, Twitch, Instagram and the rest of social media enable wasn't a thing yet, but this brings a sense of foreshadowing to all of that. It's not beyond the realms of possibility that there are livestreamers out there trying to do something like this on a small scale.
I was 12 or 13 when this came out, so was a touch young to fully grasp what was going on with the movie, but it has become one of my favourites although there's probably not much rewatchability to it.
Hey Lauren! As a fellow '90s kid, I'm shocked you missed "The Truman Show" till now, especially being a Jim Carrey enthusiast. 😅 Chicky nuggies and chalky milk for life! Totally agree with your insights on the blurred lines between private and public life, especially in today's social media era. Did you notice the posters in the travel agency? Rather than being enticing views of tourist hotspots and other vacation destinations, they were things like images of airplanes being struck by lightning! 🙈
The Truman Show was filmed in Seaside, Florida, a small beach town between Pamama City Beach and Destin. Well worth a visit.

I saw this in the theater in 1998 while visiting San Francisco for one day. It was the perfect setting is the city is self seemed like a set that had just been constructed the day before I got there and would be dismantled after I left. As Ed Harris said in the movie: “We accept the reality with which we are presented.“
the truman show and eternal sunshine of the spotless mind have a lot of crossover as outstanding and existential films which treat their subject manner with such masterful direction. highly recommend eternal sunshine.
Yes, unfortunately the only successful dramatic Jim Carrey movies are Truman Show, Man on the Moon and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
He did other serious movies like the Majestic and Number 23, but those were flops unfortunately
Around about the same time as this film there was also Ed TV (1999) about a man who agrees to have his life filmed, and "Pleasantville" (1998) where a couple of teens are transported from the present day to a 1950's TV show (world) where everything is filmed in Black and White, and everyone in the town is happy and there's no real emotional depth to anyone they meet. So when I saw this film first run, it didn't feel as original or prescient as it does now, esp in the TH-cam/internet content age. Now I love it. It's a great film

For another really good dramatic Jim Carrey film i would suggest "The Majestic" (2001) a historical piece where Jim plays a writer in the 1950's during the Blacklisting period. Its a very well done and heartfelt movie second only to the Woody Allen film "The Front" for showing the dark side of Hollywood during the Mccarthy (House on Un-American Activites Committee) era.
Also Carrey's film "The Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind" (2004) is a trippy gem of a movie as well, if you've not seen it.

There is a cut out scene in extras on the DVD that didnt make to the theatrical version where Truman friend founds him and lets him go. This was showing that he was his true friend.
I did not expect this caliber of art from Jim Carey, of all people. But only he could have done this justice.
What I never understood in the Movie is: why hiding cameras? I mean, Truman was told lies anyhow, so they could've told him that having cameras around is just normal.
idk why but i started tearing up at the end when he says "in case i dont see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and good night" like it's just such a powerful moment in the film where he choses his free will and to go out into the world to find sylvia i think that this is one of the most thought-provoking and brilliant films i have ever watched and i loved watching it with you!
Harrison Ford was known for adventure films, but the actor wanted to expand his acting skills. He got Australian director Peter Weir to direct him in “Witness.” Robin Williams was known for comedy. He wanted to be seen as a serious actor (he’d studied at The Juilliard School). And seeing the success with Peter Weir got him to direct him in “Dead Poet’s Society”.
Jim Carrey, also wanting to be known for more serious roles and following on the previously mentioned, got Peter Weir to direct him in “The Truman Show.”
All felt that this Australian director could bring out the serious actor in them.

There's a film with Jim Carrey that's worth seeing, and which is a change from the comedies in which we are used to seeing him, it's "the number 23" (from 2007, directed by Joel Schumacher)

The strange with our world is that even though we see these kinds of movies that gives a hunch of what similar things happen to us and we dont recognize them...this gave me goose bumps and a cold shower of my real reality and actually changed my life...
Interestingly, this 1998 movie came out shortly before the rise of modern reality television (which started on MTV in the '90s but really took off with Survivorr in 2000) and well before the launch of TH-cam (in 2005)!
The lengths they went through to keep Truman there is insane. To the point they internalize deep rooted emotional trauma so even when he looks at a boat in water he has a physically reaction to it.

My favorite "did ya notice?" part of this is that his name is Truman; he is the only true man in his world.
I think this was the first movie where Jim Carrey showed he could be a serious actor. He has just a great persona and screen presence. His other great non-comedy role was in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I just wish he'd done more as he deserves an Oscar nomination for what he does.
Well technically no, he already did some dramatic movies before he was a star. This was his first dramatic movie as a big star.

There's a deleted scene where the cast and crew are talking about going to a multicam show when Truman has a killed then back to a single cam show after Truman dies and focusing on his kid
I think this was the first movie to really blow my mind. A year later I watched the Matrix and I think my head nearly exploded. By then I was about 13 years old. I don't think I was ever the same again. Every time I look into a mirror I still wonder if someone is looking back. And from what I gather about untrustworthy Air B&B owners..... there just might be. 🧐
Ahh. the good old days. Now there are people willing to share their lives 24/7. This makes a great double feature with "Bruce Almighty".
The music that comes on after he stops the bus, (from Philip Glass' _Powwaqatsi_, loved since the 80s) gave me shivers.
After seeing so many reactors being confused by this movie, am I just really weird for understanding what was going on from the first few minutes? They are interviewing actors, there's rampant product placement and ads like the twins shoving him against the wall next to the chicken poster, a stage light falls from the ceiling/sky, and the movie is called "The Truman SHOW."
Agreed! Why is it hard for modern young viewers to understand the initial plot when they've literally grown up with instagram channels, TH-cam, vlog exploitation of children for "likes" etc. This would have been more confusing in the 90s , not the other way around!
I've seen a few reactions to this movie and I think yours might be my favourite! I adore the music in the Truman Show, it's perfect and so different to what you normally hear.

A few years later, Jim Carrey showed off his serious/comedic acting in a film called The Majestic, not as good as The Truman Show, but not bad.
We accept the reality of the world with which we are presented. Simple as that. Remember that. Most important message of the movie.

This is my favorite movie. I normally don't have a favorite movie because, like songs, it kind of depends on my mood, but I find that regardless of my mood I still like 'this' movie. Good, reflective reaction.
With the right script in the right directions comedians can turn in *amazing* dramatic performances. Another great example of that is Robin Williams in "The World According to Garp"

One of jim Carrey's best preformences hands down. It's still crazy to me that he didn't win a Oscar for this.
Wasn't even nominated. That was the year Shakespeare in Love cleaned house at the Oscars, even winning best picture over Saving Private Ryan. Absolutely absurd. Then we learn about Harvey Weinstein and how he basically created the blueprint for aggressive Oscar campaigning and that's the blueprint that studios use to this day.

Great reaction as always. I’ve always thought of this as one of his best movies. Jim Carey doesn’t get enough credit for his more serious roles. One of his first roles was Johnny Squares on the Dirty Harry movie The Deadpool”. You’ve seen “The Number 23”. He was good in that.
I hope you have some good scary movie reactions lined up for October. I’m hoping you’ll give “The Howling” (1981) and “House” (1985) a chance.
The reality show afterwards would be the historic lawsuit Truman would have against the creator and the corporation that adopted him. That payout would make Truman wealthy enough to purchase Fiji.

One of the best Jim Carrey movie, he truly shines in it, maybe I like a bit more in Sunshine of the spotless mind, that in my opinion is his best role.

Lovely reaction - this is maybe the only movie I can think of where it's the AUDIENCE that's the villain - even when they're rooting for him, it's just more entertainment for them - it's like this spectatorship is a kind of vampirism that feeds off his life; the corporation is just there to facilitate it all, and they just lap it up blindly - is there such a thing as an ethics of spectatorship? Where we just "consume" anything that's placed in front of our eyes? Can watching itself be a kind of crime? Are WE the villain here? I can't decide
Fantastic reaction video . If you loved this movie, and if you've never seen it, I highly recomment the "Westworld" series. Its about AI androids created as hosts in an amusment park for the super weathy to visit and do as they please to the hosts. The hosts have no idea they are not real beings having free will. They become aware and it gets insane ... Top level acting and storyline.
I have seen this film many times, and have watched a lot of reactions to it, it is one of my favorites to see people react to, but it was something you said or reaction to something that made me stop and think, Truman was like an animal in a cage in a zoo..being watched all the time,the feeling that somehow they were keeping him safe,never being able to leave. I dunno it really got me tonight and how sad that is for him in the movie,for the animals out in the world, and in a way how we treat our celeb's.

its interesting seeing different reaction channels do this movie, due to the wildly different elapsed times that they figure out whats actually going on. my favorite jim carrey movies are "LIAR LIAR" , followed by "dumb and dumber". and not because i have a thing for movie titles that repeat themselves.

My favorite Jim Carrey film also just happens to be one of his more ‘grounded’ serious films called “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”. I think more people should see it as it’s a near perfect film.
Yes, unfortunately the only successful dramatic Jim Carrey movies were Truman Show, Man on the Moon and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. He did other serious movies like the Majestic and Number 23, but those were flops unfortunately
