Dan you do not eat meals out for only 1-2$ a meal, a typical Pho Bo costs between 40-60 dong I have been to the cheap places here, describe what you get for less than 50 dong! Most foreigners would not want to eat what you do, although there are many meals for less than 100 dong, on the money you are now making I know you are not eating out for less than 50 dong each very often....
Easy said than done. Food and housing for sure cheaper than US. However, when illness arrives, especially serious ones, no amount of health insurance or healthcare in Vietnam would be able to take good care of you like the US. Food safety, polluted environment, and other shortcuts there are big concerns, too.
Fully agree with your findings. Da Nang is a great place. I have escaped the winters in the Netherlands for the last 10 years or so. The last two I have spend in Da Nang and I will arrive again on January 24th for two months. I am a vegetarian my whole life and I was pleased to see you listing of vegan/vegetarian restaurants. I am a Vietnam era Marine Corps veteran. I spent 1 1/2 years in Da Nang and several months in Chu Lai from 1967 thru 1970. I really enjoy seeing the changes made in Vietnam and the video you made here, thanks for sharing your experiences.
I'm glad to see your comment. I have been a little concerned about telling my dad that I would consider relocating to Vietnam. He was a Marine Corps veteran too, and I wouldn't want him to feel betrayed.
Vietnam is a beautiful country. The war took a toll on both sides, but the war has been over for us vets since 1975. The Vietnamese I worked with were very good people. Talk to your dad man to man about it. @@coreygrant5974

DaNang looks and sounds like a great destination for me. im a 68 year old retired man with a few health issues. the food looks amazing and so affordable. you have the most detailed and informative channel for expacts like me, by far. i have watched them all over the past year and i basicly only watch your vids these days. thank you for your good work and recommendations. i cannot wait to get to southeast Asia and spend quality time there. @glenn9057, I would think if you decide to go, he can give you few pointers and be ur guide for few days. I totally agree with what Dan said. However, we, human, need compatible companion, and that's the most challenge, and that part is the make or break.

When I visited Vietnam for the whole month and every meal I ate to the fullest and never feel bloated or uncomfortable. Whereas the food in the States I can only eat to about 2/3 full and still have bloating & heartburn occasionally. Another thing I noticed is my aches and pains on the shoulders is year round, but is more exasperated during the colder months here in the States. The whole month I stayed in Vietnam I forgot completely about the aches and pains and when I came back to the States the aches and pains returned within 2 weeks. I had noticed the change in the aches and pains symptoms on my shoulders when I visited and returned to the States in 2017, 2019 & 2023.
@@briannguyen0419 The food in the US are more processed than in Vietnam and SE Asia. Also, the meats are higher quality because the animals are healthier. They get to move around unlike the pigs, cows, and chickens in US farms. And you probably eat more vegetables and fruits when in Asia.
DN is the #1 choice overall for retirees in VN. A couple points Dan missed is: 1)safety 2)local culture (local/central VN people are the most chill/unasuming/down to earth people ) and finally 3)It offers a great ideal ratio vibe of small beach town feel & big touristy area feel so that if you live there you still have access to lively vibrant activity at your doorsteps (so your best friends n family will want to visit you). Who wants to go retire and look at the rice fields 8 hrs day?

I wend to DaNang last month with my family, stayed in one of the beach hotels, and enjoyed a lot. I moved to VN last May from US, living north of Hanoi. DN is very popular spot and saw many new apartments (condo) under construction. My wife is originally from VN, so I have 5 years family Visa, which makes it easier for me to live in VN. I still work for my company in US (remote work, as software engineer) so feel very comfortable living here. Thank you so much for posting the Video, and enjoyed a lot!
Da Nang was one of the best places I stayed. 6 months there was so good. Great value for money when it came to accommodation, food, cafes and so much more. I would highly recommend it!!

Hey guys, Happy New Year. Currently living in Pattaya, TH. I am thinking of going to Vietnam and exploring the cost of living. This vlog is very useful.
Traveled to Vietnam a couple of times with a Vietnam Veterans group, in 99 and 01, and went from North to South and stayed in Hanoi, Hue, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Saigon, etc... Outside of Saigon, it was rare to see westerners, and most that you saw weren't tourist or expats, they were working there. Always rented scooters and had no problems, you just drive like you walk over there, and just go. Most of the beach resorts weren't built yet, but they took us around and showed them under construction. We rented Cyclos in Hanoi and strapped an insulated keg to one and rode around town getting drunk with the Cyclo drivers. Hue was nice, seeing the Citadel, and doing a dinner cruise on the perfume river was fun. Stayed at the Furama in Da Nang both times, nice place, drank snake and gecko wine, checked out Marble Mountain, and hung out at the real China Beach, etc.. Nha Trang was a nice beachfront town, but had alot of Heroin and crime problems back then, and the locals had destroyed the nice coral areas for snorkling and diving from fishing with dynamite. Saigon was fun, but had a lot more Western feel to it, and the Rex hotel used to have really good food. Most people don't realize that alot of the Cyclo drivers in Saigon were former South Vietnamese military. After the reeducation camps post war, that was one of the few jobs they were allowed to have. Anyway, had a great time on both trips as a guest of the Vietnam Veterans group, and got to travel to all the old battle sites, bases, etc., and listen to the Vets as they talked about their experiences. I am glad i got to see Vietnam before social media, and alot of tourists and expats showed up. The people were very friendly, and was surprised how many spoke English even up North. I hope to return in a couple of years. If anyone is interested i have videos from the trip on my channel, not great footage because the humidity played hell with my new camcorder.
LOVE the idea of the Cyclos! Will ask my wife is they're still in Hanoi. Very different now from even 10 years ago. You mentioned Hanoi, but other than bun cha and bia hoi, I have no love for it. Lots of pollution; we were there for Tet in 2023. Big variation in temperatures; we are from cold climate and were prepared but YMMV. You know what the summers are like.

Big difference when diet is based on rice than wheat (rice noodles, rice paper, rice as rice...plus the abundance of vegetables at meals). Wheat can cause inflammation and red meat constipation. Western diet is shit. Lol

I lived two years with a Vietnamese immigrant in the usa, back in 2011, he lost his low paid job at GoodWill, was poor and kind of lived off me, then several years later he crashes at my other place, homeless, starts selling my stuff on Offerup. But several years after that, he got his Bachelor Degree in Teaching, became a traveling teacher, now he's living the life in Vietnam! I'm actually proud of him, never thought he'd be the success, but I was wrong. Now I'm the bum wishing for that great life in Vietnam.

The only way this works financially is to do slow travel like Dan. Otherwise traveling ba c k and forth to Notlrth America will eat up any savings on cheaper food and accommodation. That's what I'm going to do.
i will give u guy an honest answer as local vietnamese according to what i know. Some years ago, vietnam have trouble with chinese immigrant investor and settlers and there was a protest broke out because vietnamese worried they would buy all the land and turn a region in northern vietnam into a "special economic zone" like cambodia or laos, so the government have tread very lightly with foreigners. Your are welcome to come but for long term stay, its getting more strict.
I think you have to get out of the country once every 6 months and re-enter, and you're fine. You can go to Cambodia or Lao, Thailand, Singapore for a quick getaway and come back thru custom and you're legit. Yes, it's a bit inconvenience but it's not too complicated.

Hello, new sub here. I’m watching from Atl, G.A. I’m 36, while growing up I watched Vietnam war movies which gave me a profound love for the country, and it’s beauty. I’m outdoors man, who relocated from the hustle and bustle of NYC life. But the cost of living inside of America is destroying the fabric of America. Vietnam and Thailand has been on my radar. I would love to do a full months travel from ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) to Hanoi. Thank you for posting this content, please keep the videos coming.
Besides Vietnam and Thailand, you should check out Malaysia and Indonesia since you are an outdoor person. The good thing about SE Asia is if you don't like or tired of a place, you can easily relocate.
If you like the outdoors, majestic sceneries and such, head to northern Vietnam. Do multi-day caving in Vietnam (check out the video from "Adventures of A+K" or the long one from "Tim and Fin"). Or you can do t he Ha Giang Loop (again both channels mentioned previously made great videos on this). Hanoi is very popular with vloggers because unlike HCMC, it has a charm to it due to the fact it keeps to the tradition, culture, and has a lot of the French architecture with lots of trees and greenery in the city. Don't miss Ninh Binh. Other channels that made great videos there are "Mike & Ashley", Sammy and Tommy", "Flora and Note", "Shev and Dev", etc.

This is my hometown,I left it 43 years ago and settle in San Diego California now, it's like San Diego, only warmer than San Diego, I swim in the ocean all year round,in the winter the water is more warmer than the water in San Diego in the summer.
There is no variable visa options for long-term stay for retirement in Vietnam. Visa run gets really old especially if you are retired and wanting to stay there long term.

Now they try to get a person to buy quick. Saying ‘ This house or apartment will go fast so you must contact us quick. What nonsense. A retirement visa would make living in Vietnam more attractive. I am familiar with Da Nang and Hoi An and they are both wonderful places to visit and, as you said, the food is great. The market food court in Hoi An is delightful. Your advice about not renting scooters or motorbikes is good. Don't even think about it. It's just too dangerous.
Unless those quarterly (3 month) e-visa renewals are smooth and acceptable indefinitely, Vietnam doesn't really offer retirees a place to retire. Also if they allow that to be possible won't they just simply allow a retirement visa with a couple of conditions like they do in Thailand? So unless retirement visa is a reality in Vietnam I don't see how they could allow those $25 e-visa renewals indefinitely!

During my youth growing up in California, I heard some stories from my friend about his father's experience during the Vietnam War - his father was a U.S. Army officer, saw combat, and did three tours. There were a few stories and the one I remember the most was my friend saying that his father said that the rats in Da Nang were abundant and were as "big as cats". Hopefully, more than 50 years later, rats are no longer a problem in Da Nang, but I'm pretty sure they're a problem in L.A. now. Lol

the difference nowadays is that you can use a translator app on your phone when i travelled Vietnam the 3 times in the past this wasn;t an option so i used to carry a pen and paper to have conversations using 'pictionary' which is easier said than done when you're terrible at drawing like i am haha
Can't say Vietnam was ever on my radar. But with reports and videos, I can see us mapping out 6-12 cities in 3-6 countries over 3 months as an easy intro to slow travel. 🐌 😊 Basically a 7-14 day stay per city. Definitely that "grippers " (what our 13 yr old daughter calls feet 😂) on the ground way of checking things out first. We could do an easy 3-6 month slow travel to Mexico city 🏣⛪️🏫🏢 there's so much to do and see with short hops to Tulum and Acapulco or other beaches 🌊 🌞🏖 Thanks again. The best decision ever. Da Nang is one of the best cities in Vietnam. I am sure the city would treat you very well. Food variety, very reasonable cost of living with a good standard of living, hospitable people, tropical weather...you have everything in a small city.

Waht is the water pollution situation ? do they have sewage treatment? My wife is from the Philippines and they have no sewage treatment so the only beaches that are clean/safe will be in areas with little to no buildings near the beach.

I’m so glad to see some content on Da Nang. Everything I’ve seen so far centers around Hanoi or Saigon (HCMC). It looks beautiful 😍. I’m a 45 year old African American man. From what I’ve seen on TH-cam, I’m told I should expect a good amount of curiosity and flat out dumbfounded amazement as like seeing a unicorn in real life😂. However, I have seen that it’s far more advantageous to be fluent in Vietnamese if you’re really interested in connecting on a personal level so I plan to learn some of the language first. Right now I just want to catch a night bus from Hanoi to Saigon. Im a night person and former trucker/ bus driver myself so it looks so exciting!

Nice to see you hanging around in the area, i wasen't shure that you passed me at a restaurant in Hoi An today or was i wrong that i saw you there? At least i can confirm that the prices that you are putting out is pretty close to my estimate as well, and i am quite on the move person. Next place me and my friend will Check is Hue before Danang, and then Nha Trang and Da Lat, so we know witch of these plases is best for me as well, but i have a feeling that Pokhara Nepal and Nuwara Eliya in Sri Lanka is the winners, i generaly prefers cooler hillstations for me. I hope that you check Nepal and Sri Lanka at least because you lack those places, and India has some nice plases as well such as Udaipur and surrounding areas as well :)
One of my favorite places on the planet. Would be back there living if it was not for Covid. Living in Mexico now and boy is it expensive here with a lower lifestyle.
Great info as always, thank you guys! I'm in Vietnam now slow traveling for my 90 days, but been avoiding Da Nang because I've heard it's so touristy and full of expats. Maybe this will change my mind lol. Wish I could be more helpful on the repeating visa info, but I split my time mainly between Thailand and Vietnam...so far no issues coming to Vietnam. I have however, been questioned at Thai immigration in BKK if I stay out if country only a couple weeks.
Da Nang has expats mainly in My An Beach. But even just 8 blocks west of there is the Vietnamese life with the best food and local cultural experiences. Go to the restaurant list on the first link below this video and visit the "local-ish" restaurants and you will see the real Vietnam.
I'm 2.5 years away from my retirement here at 55 and looking to explore as you have. It looks like a place that is affordable with the possibility of doing a lot more for your money. The 3 month e-visa sounds good. Looking forward to some of your videos.
What a great vlog, moving to Vietnam and Thailand for at least 6 months with my son is my dream for my 40th in a few years. As a single mother stretching out my money is a must! It appears that many apartments in Vietnam are more flexible with renting without a yearly contract than in Thailand. Also any advice for people with serious food allergies? @@ES-ku3oe Vietnam uses a lot of fish sauce in the food or as dips. Just make sure the food is truly vegan as the Viets in the past define vegetarian and vegan differently than the rest of he world.
@@ES-ku3oe Maybe in bigger cities with a big tourist crowd, their definition are the same. But I've seen in the past where they may define vegetarian as animals on land vs pescatarian. And it's possible they may forget fish sauce nulls a vegetarian dish. You can look for the word "chay" and go to the Buddhist temples for meals or do food tours in the bigger cities.

yes i agree with you about the food in vietnam is great the two time i have gone to vietnam the one thing i never missed from the usa was any american foods if i live in vietnam the one place i would never ever goto would be any expats food type restaurant at all it would be at the very lest the very last place i would go. and when you are over seas the last type of people you would want to see would be any sxpats for sure.

Da Nang is a fantastic city, except during the raining months when it rains every day. Here what I love about Da Nang. 1) It's clean and not crowded like HCMC and Hanoi. So it's pleasant to walk around the river or just sit on a stool drinking a coconut juice and watching the dragon bridge. 2) The beaches are clean. No price gouging at the beach. There's a chart that lists all prices for drinks and chairs. 3) Da Nang International Airport is fairly new. It's only 10 minutes from the city center, so you leave the city quickly.
Having lived in Vietnam for nearlly 20yrs i can say mr Vagabond has done a good and accurate job in explaining Vietnam a little bit hfor beginners. I personally don't give advice as such except i tell people. Do nothing because what ever you think you will think different in 6mths, and again another 6mths. Maybe a couple of yrs you"ll get the "lay of the land"...so keep your hand in your pocket until then. Make no mistake Vietnam is a difficult and complex society. Thats the challenge, that's the fun ?

My only hesitation would be the language barrier. In every other way, it looks to be superior to the Philippines. Dan, you mentioned "winter." It looks to be on the same latitude line as Manilla. Is there really a "winter" there?
I just got back from there...January 2024...daytime max was about 25c every day and drops down to about 20c in the evenings. Nice and cool, like summer in England. I live in Bangkok and it was a huge change from the relentless 35c every day here in Bangkok even in January. So it has a proper cool season. If you live in Da nang, jogging or cycling along the beach front (which is at least 5km long) is a viable option thanks to there being plenty of open space and the cool temperatures. Good luck cycling or jogging in Bangkok. I find in BKK only viable way to get exercise is in gyms with aircon, due to the oppressive heat. Prices also much cheaper than in Bangkok or tourist areas of Thailand. Vietnam is awesome, massively under-rated. It's a safe, orderly, well organised country, the people are friendly, not as friendly as Thai people., but friendly enough. In cities like da nang, people speak enough English you can get by easily. I need to start learning Vietnamese and spending more time there!
Agreed. Vietnamese food is very balanced and the fish sauce is what make everything taste so delicious. Da Nang is also my favorite city in VN so far. Lovely beaches and laid back environment unlike Saigon. Good job

Vietnam is S. U. P. E. R. B. I have been there dozens of times. Look, Vietnamese people can live on 15 million VND per month or 615 USD per month and that is in Saigon which is more expensive. You want to have more “room to maneuver” so u need to calculate things well. But Vietnam is awesome and for me South East Asia is the best part of the planet, PERIOD!!! Interesting perspective. They had their own civil war. Americans traveled to their country to kill Vietnamese and you’re holding a grudge because they shot back? From that perspective it should be more surprising that Vietnamese welcome Americans into their country, don’t you think? Especially since the side that Americans were killing is the side that won the war. I agree with the communism concern as valid though. Like China, they abandoned actual communism because it doesn’t work, but kept their Party in power. In essence a dictatorship by committee. So my main concern in Vietnam for retirement would be the risk of any real estate purchase or if several years of lease money were paid in advance. Local Party officials are notorious for seizing land “in the State’s best interest” and giving pennies on the dollar in compensation.

Dan you do not eat meals out for only 1-2$ a meal, a typical Pho Bo costs between 40-60 dong I have been to the cheap places here, describe what you get for less than 50 dong! Most foreigners would not want to eat what you do, although there are many meals for less than 100 dong, on the money you are now making I know you are not eating out for less than 50 dong each very often....

Easy said than done. Food and housing for sure cheaper than US. However, when illness arrives, especially serious ones, no amount of health insurance or healthcare in Vietnam would be able to take good care of you like the US. Food safety, polluted environment, and other shortcuts there are big concerns, too.
Fully agree with your findings. Da Nang is a great place. I have escaped the winters in the Netherlands for the last 10 years or so. The last two I have spend in Da Nang and I will arrive again on January 24th for two months. I am a vegetarian my whole life and I was pleased to see you listing of vegan/vegetarian restaurants. If you don't like Da Nang or Vietnam, you easily fly to another SE Asia country.
The food in Vietnam seemed to get digested easier and faster than the food here in the States. When I visited Vietnam for the whole month and every meal I ate to the fullest and never feel bloated or uncomfortable. Whereas the food in the States I can only eat to about 2/3 full and still have bloating & heartburn occasionally. Another thing I noticed is my aches and pains on the shoulders is year round, but is more exasperated during the colder months here in the States. The whole month I stayed in Vietnam I forgot completely about the aches and pains and when I came back to the States the aches and pains returned within 2 weeks. I had noticed the change in the aches and pains symptoms on my shoulders when I visited and returned to the States in 2017, 2019 & 2023.
@@briannguyen0419 The food in the US are more processed than in Vietnam and SE Asia. Also, the meats are higher quality because the animals are healthier. They get to move around unlike the pigs, cows, and chickens in US farms.
And you probably eat more vegetables and fruits when in Asia.

DN is the #1 choice overall for retirees in VN. A couple points Dan missed is: 1)safety 2)local culture (local/central VN people are the most chill/unasuming/down to earth people ) and finally 3)It offers a great ideal ratio vibe of small beach town feel & big touristy area feel so that if you live there you still have access to lively vibrant activity at your doorsteps (so your best friends n family will want to visit you). Who wants to go retire and look at the rice fields 8 hrs day?

I wend to DaNang last month with my family, stayed in one of the beach hotels, and enjoyed a lot. I moved to VN last May from US, living north of Hanoi. DN is very popular spot and saw many new apartments (condo) under construction. My wife is originally from VN, so I have 5 years family Visa, which makes it easier for me to live in VN. I still work for my company in US (remote work, as software engineer) so feel very comfortable living here. Thank you so much for posting the Video, and enjoyed a lot!
Da Nang was one of the best places I stayed. 6 months there was so good. Great value for money when it came to accommodation, food, cafes and so much more.

Hey guys, Happy New Year. Currently living in Pattaya, TH. I am thinking of going to Vietnam and exploring the cost of living. This vlog is very useful.
Traveled to Vietnam a couple of times with a Vietnam Veterans group, in 99 and 01, and went from North to South and stayed in Hanoi, Hue, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Saigon, etc... Outside of Saigon, it was rare to see westerners, and most that you saw weren't tourist or expats, they were working there. Always rented scooters and had no problems, you just drive like you walk over there, and just go. Most of the beach resorts weren't built yet, but they took us around and showed them under construction. We rented Cyclos in Hanoi and strapped an insulated keg to one and rode around town getting drunk with the Cyclo drivers. Hue was nice, seeing the Citadel, and doing a dinner cruise on the perfume river was fun. Stayed at the Furama in Da Nang both times, nice place, drank snake and gecko wine, checked out Marble Mountain, and hung out at the real China Beach, etc.. Nha Trang was a nice beachfront town, but had alot of Heroin and crime problems back then, and the locals had destroyed the nice coral areas for snorkling and diving from fishing with dynamite. Saigon was fun, but had a lot more Western feel to it, and the Rex hotel used to have really good food. Most people don't realize that alot of the Cyclo drivers in Saigon were former South Vietnamese military. After the reeducation camps post war, that was one of the few jobs they were allowed to have.
Anyway, had a great time on both trips as a guest of the Vietnam Veterans group, and got to travel to all the old battle sites, bases, etc., and listen to the Vets as they talked about their experiences. I am glad i got to see Vietnam before social media, and alot of tourists and expats showed up. The people were very friendly, and was surprised how many spoke English even up North. I hope to return in a couple of years.

You mentioned Hanoi, but other than bun cha and bia hoi, I have no love for it. Lots of pollution; we were there for Tet in 2023. Big variation in temperatures; we are from cold climate and were prepared but YMMV. You know what the summers are like.

The US is a stress pit. It could be weather or anxiety. I am not a fan of the US for living anymore. I just go to visit family and friends now.

@briannguyen0419 It's the enriched flour in the US. Messes with a lot of people and causes those symptoms.
Big difference when diet is based on rice than wheat (rice noodles, rice paper, rice as rice...plus the abundance of vegetables at meals). Wheat can cause inflammation and red meat constipation. Western diet is shit. Lol

I lived two years with a Vietnamese immigrant in the usa, back in 2011, he lost his low paid job at GoodWill, was poor and kind of lived off me, then several years later he crashes at my other place, homeless, starts selling my stuff on Offerup. But several years after that, he got his Bachelor Degree in Teaching, became a traveling teacher, now he's living the life in Vietnam! I'm actually proud of him, never thought he'd be the success, but I was wrong. Now I'm the bum wishing for that great life in Vietnam.

i will give u guy an honest answer as local vietnamese according to what i know. Some years ago, vietnam have trouble with chinese immigrant investor and settlers and there was a protest broke out because vietnamese worried they would buy all the land and turn a region in northern vietnam into a "special economic zone" like cambodia or laos, so the government have tread very lightly with foreigners. Your are welcome to come but for long term stay, its getting more strict.
at least until recently.
I think you have to get out of the country once every 6 months and re-enter, and you're fine. You can go to Cambodia or Lao, Thailand, Singapore for a quick getaway and come back thru custom and you're legit. Yes, it's a bit inconvenience but it's not too complicated.

Hello, new sub here. I’m watching from Atl, G.A. I’m 36, while growing up I watched Vietnam war movies which gave me a profound love for the country, and it’s beauty. I’m outdoors man, who relocated from the hustle and bustle of NYC life. But the cost of living inside of America is destroying the fabric of America. Vietnam and Thailand has been on my radar. Besides Vietnam and Thailand, you should check out Malaysia and Indonesia since you are an outdoor person. The good thing about SE Asia is if you don't like or tired of a place, you can easily relocate.
If you like the outdoors, majestic sceneries and such, head to northern Vietnam. Do multi-day caving in Vietnam (check out the video from "Adventures of A+K" or the long one from "Tim and Fin"). Or you can do t he Ha Giang Loop (again both channels mentioned previously made great videos on this). Hanoi is very popular with vloggers because unlike HCMC, it has a charm to it due to the fact it keeps to the tradition, culture, and has a lot of the French architecture with lots of trees and greenery in the city. This is my hometown,I left it 43 years ago and settle in San Diego California now, it's like San Diego, only warmer than San Diego, I swim in the ocean all year round,in the winter the water is more warmer than the water in San Diego in the summer.
There is no variable visa options for long-term stay for retirement in Vietnam. Visa run gets really old especially if you are retired and wanting to stay there long term.

Absolutely. Yes. Expats selling real estate are looking for kickbacks. In other countries. Perfect word. And it used to be recommended one wait at least a year. Now they try to get a person to buy quick. Saying ‘ This house or apartment will go fast so you must contact us quick. What nonsense. There are so many available spaces

A retirement visa would make living in Vietnam more attractive. I am familiar with Da Nang and Hoi An and they are both wonderful places to visit and, as you said, the food is great. The market food court in Hoi An is delightful. Your advice about not renting scooters or motorbikes is good. Don't even think about it. It's just too dangerous.
I NEVER drive anywhere outside the US. I hate to think what would happen to me if I caused an accident or worse hurt someone. 😵💫
Unless those quarterly (3 month) e-visa renewals are smooth and acceptable indefinitely, Vietnam doesn't really offer retirees a place to retire. Also if they allow that to be possible won't they just simply allow a retirement visa with a couple of conditions like they do in Thailand? So unless retirement visa is a reality in Vietnam I don't see how they could allow those $25 e-visa renewals indefinitely!

During my youth growing up in California, I heard some stories from my friend about his father's experience during the Vietnam War - his father was a U.S. Army officer, saw combat, and did three tours. There were a few stories and the one I remember the most was my friend saying that his father said that the rats in Da Nang were abundant and were as "big as cats". Hopefully, more than 50 years later, rats are no longer a problem in Da Nang, but I'm pretty sure they're a problem in L.A. now. Lol

i have been to vietnam 2 time with 4 weeks each time so i do have some knowledge about vietnam and the number one barrier is the language.
We travel all over the world so we are used to communicating while we travel.
the difference nowadays is that you can use a translator app on your phone
when i travelled Vietnam the 3 times in the past this wasn;t an option so i used to carry a pen and paper to have conversations using 'pictionary' which is easier said than done when you're terrible at drawing like i am haha

Can't say Vietnam was ever on my radar. But with reports and videos, I can see us mapping out 6-12 cities in 3-6 countries over 3 months as an easy intro to slow travel. 🐌 😊 Basically a 7-14 day stay per city.
Definitely that "grippers " (what our 13 yr old daughter calls feet 😂) on the ground way of checking things out first.
We could do an easy 3-6 month slow travel to Mexico city 🏣⛪️🏫🏢 there's so much to do and see with short hops to Tulum and Acapulco or other beaches 🌊 🌞🏖

The best decision ever. Da Nang is one of the best cities in Vietnam. I am sure the city would treat you very well. Food variety, very reasonable cost of living with a good standard of living, hospitable people, tropical weather...you have everything in a small city.

Waht is the water pollution situation ? do they have sewage treatment? My wife is from the Philippines and they have no sewage treatment so the only beaches that are clean/safe will be in areas with little to no buildings near the beach.

I’m so glad to see some content on Da Nang. Everything I’ve seen so far centers around Hanoi or Saigon (HCMC). It looks beautiful 😍. I’m a 45 year old African American man. From what I’ve seen on TH-cam, I’m told I should expect a good amount of curiosity and flat out dumbfounded amazement as like seeing a unicorn in real life😂. However, I have seen that it’s far more advantageous to be fluent in Vietnamese if you’re really interested in connecting on a personal level so I plan to learn some of the language first. Right now I just want to catch a night bus from Hanoi to Saigon. Im a night person and former trucker/ bus driver myself so it looks so exciting!

Nice to see you hanging around in the area, i wasen't shure that you passed me at a restaurant in Hoi An today or was i wrong that i saw you there? At least i can confirm that the prices that you are putting out is pretty close to my estimate as well, and i am quite on the move person. Next place me and my friend will Check is Hue before Danang, and then Nha Trang and Da Lat, so we know witch of these plases is best for me as well, but i have a feeling that Pokhara Nepal and Nuwara Eliya in Sri Lanka is the winners, i generaly prefers cooler hillstations for me. I hope that you check Nepal and Sri Lanka at least because you lack those places, and India has some nice plases as well such as Udaipur and surrounding areas as well :)

Great info as always, thank you guys! I'm in Vietnam now slow traveling for my 90 days, but been avoiding Da Nang because I've heard it's so touristy and full of expats. Maybe this will change my mind lol. Wish I could be more helpful on the repeating visa info, but I split my time mainly between Thailand and Vietnam...so far no issues coming to Vietnam. I have however, been questioned at Thai immigration in BKK if I stay out if country only a couple weeks.
compared to Thailand/ Saigon. Expat # in DN is way small. You can always stay away from "expat areas".
Da Nang has expats mainly in My An Beach. But even just 8 blocks west of there is the Vietnamese life with the best food and local cultural experiences. Go to the restaurant list on the first link below this video and visit the "local-ish" restaurants and you will see the real Vietnam.
I'm 2.5 years away from my retirement here at 55 and looking to explore as you have. It looks like a place that is affordable with the possibility of doing a lot more for your money. The 3 month e-visa sounds good. Looking forward to some of your videos.
What a great vlog, moving to Vietnam and Thailand for at least 6 months with my son is my dream for my 40th in a few years. As a single mother stretching out my money is a must! It appears that many apartments in Vietnam are more flexible with renting without a yearly contract than in Thailand. Also any advice for people with serious food allergies? I’m anaphylactic to shellfish, even something as simple as using the same spoon to stir a dish that has shrimp paste in it while cooking can kill me 😅

@@ES-ku3oe Vietnam uses a lot of fish sauce in the food or as dips. Just make sure the food is truly vegan as the Viets in the past define vegetarian and vegan differently than the rest of he world.

@@ES-ku3oe Maybe in bigger cities with a big tourist crowd, their definition are the same. But I've seen in the past where they may define vegetarian as animals on land vs pescatarian. And it's possible they may forget fish sauce nulls a vegetarian dish. You can look for the word "chay" and go to the Buddhist temples for meals or do food tours in the bigger cities.
The new 90 day evisa is exciting as I know it was 30 days with visa runs. This makes it much more do able. Thanks for great video and the other interview with expat living on beach. Cheers
yes i agree with you about the food in vietnam is great the two time i have gone to vietnam the one thing i never missed from the usa was any american foods if i live in vietnam the one place i would never ever goto would be any expats food type restaurant at all it would be at the very lest the very last place i would go. and when you are over seas the last type of people you would want to see would be any sxpats for sure.

Da Nang is a fantastic city, except during the raining months when it rains every day. Here what I love about Da Nang.
1) It's clean and not crowded like HCMC and Hanoi. So it's pleasant to walk around the river or just sit on a stool drinking a coconut juice and watching the dragon bridge.
2) The beaches are clean. No price gouging at the beach. There's a chart that lists all prices for drinks and chairs.
3) Da Nang International Airport is fairly new. It's only 10 minutes from the city center, so you leave the city quickly.

Having lived in Vietnam for nearlly 20yrs i can say mr Vagabond has done a good and accurate job in explaining Vietnam a little bit hfor beginners. I personally don't give advice as such except i tell people. Do nothing because what ever you think you will think different in 6mths, and again another 6mths. Maybe a couple of yrs you"ll get the "lay of the land"...so keep your hand in your pocket until then.
Make no mistake Vietnam is a difficult and complex society. Thats the challenge, that's the fun ?

My only hesitation would be the language barrier. In every other way, it looks to be superior to the Philippines. Dan, you mentioned "winter." It looks to be on the same latitude line as Manilla. Is there really a "winter" there?
Yes. We had nights that went dowm to 66F at night. For us, with wind and rain, that felt cold.

I just got back from there...January 2024...daytime max was about 25c every day and drops down to about 20c in the evenings. Nice and cool, like summer in England. I live in Bangkok and it was a huge change from the relentless 35c every day here in Bangkok even in January. So it has a proper cool season. If you live in Da nang, jogging or cycling along the beach front (which is at least 5km long) is a viable option thanks to there being plenty of open space and the cool temperatures. Good luck cycling or jogging in Bangkok. I find in BKK only viable way to get exercise is in gyms with aircon, due to the oppressive heat. Prices also much cheaper than in Bangkok or tourist areas of Thailand. Vietnam is awesome, massively under-rated. It's a safe, orderly, well organised country, the people are friendly, not as friendly as Thai people., but friendly enough. In cities like da nang, people speak enough English you can get by easily. I need to start learning Vietnamese and spending more time there!
Agreed. Vietnamese food is very balanced and the fish sauce is what make everything taste so delicious. Da Nang is also my favorite city in VN so far. Lovely beaches and laid back environment unlike Saigon. Good job

Look, Vietnamese people can live on 15 million VND per month or 615 USD per month and that is in Saigon which is more expensive. You want to have more “room to maneuver” so u need to calculate things well. But Vietnam is awesome and for me South East Asia is the best part of the planet, PERIOD!!!

Interesting perspective. They had their own civil war. Americans traveled to their country to kill Vietnamese and you’re holding a grudge because they shot back?
From that perspective it should be more surprising that Vietnamese welcome Americans into their country, don’t you think?
Especially since the side that Americans were killing is the side that won the war.
I agree with the communism concern as valid though. Like China, they abandoned actual communism because it doesn’t work, but kept their Party in power. In essence a dictatorship by committee. So my main concern in Vietnam for retirement would be the risk of any real estate purchase or if several years of lease money were paid in advance. Local Party officials are notorious for seizing land “in the State’s best interest” and giving pennies on the dollar in compensation.
