I used to sell a non insurance alternative plan for health care many years ago. The organization got in on paying the same negotiated price on services and medication as the insurance companies pay. The drug prices and service payments the ins companies pay were ridiculous to what they want us to believe they are. The insurance companies had it shut down over the course of a few years. I do agree, yes we need a grass roots movement to fight for the future of our health care. Doctors can’t work for free any more than we shouldn’t throw our money into a system that doesn’t provide.

You are the second doctor in my physician care team that has stopped taking Medicare. I totally agree with your position on this. I am VERY IMPRESSED with what you have done to guide me in management of my T2 diabetes, no other doctor in the past 25 years have helped me as you have. I will continue to see you as long as you keep your office in Jacksonville. For those that think it’s too much to pay cash. Look at every other advanced, and not-so-advanced, country in the world and you will see that these things are on no one's mind. Every person can seek the medical help they need without considering the expense. Vote out all those who are funded by the pharmaceutical and insurance companies and stop being indoctrinated into believing that free healthcare is 'socialist'. Anywhere else in the world, a person would never hold office if they even thought about removing universal healthcare.

Unfortunately, we are in a situation where we are at the mercy of insurance companies, yet we are a nation of metabolically sick people. This wont change until people figure out how to improve their metabolic health on their own. This will be a long, hard road to travel. My recommendation is to tell your friends and family about the benefits of the keto and carnivore lifestyle so this information can be spread far and wide. The sooner this can happen the better for all of us.

I am 60 and went keto/carnivore and OMAD four years ago, in large part based on what I learned from Dr Cywes and his colleagues in the low carb community. I no longer have a dog in the fight. I am now watching from the financial sidelines as a spectator. I reversed all of my medical problems. Medical problems are all now in remission with no medications. Lab work and vitals are all very good. I only go to the doctor now for an annual checkup and blood work, which is free to me with no co-pay.
At the person level, the financial off-ramp to all this is to buffer and hedge your position by investing in a large freezer and purchasing grass-fed, grass-finished beef in bulk and otherwise enjoy life to its fullest eating beef, butter, bacon, and eggs.
The modern healthcare system is akin to a springing lien waiting to pounce. I choose to give it a wide berth and do what I can to place myself out of range.

The administrative burdens combined with late and lower payments will be the reason why you won't be able to find a competent caring physician now and in the future. As a small practice we get reimbursed less then the large local county hospital despite providing the same service. The worst plans are the Medicare Advantage plans and trying to keep up with the different regulations. I’ve been doing therapy for 34 years and Medicare reimburses us about what they did in the late 1990s I can’t afford to hire a therapist with the current rates, patient cancellations or no shows.

Then a doctor found a small blockage on an artery on the backside of the heart, didn’t slow me down though… then the wife was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and our medical bills got real.
Then my PCP died and I had to scramble to find a doc that would continue prescribing my thyroid meds, the only one I could find was not taking Medicare.

Before I retired at the end of 2019, I worked for a hospital PHO. Most of my job involved making sure the dooctors were meeting the HMOs requirements for reimbursement. The PCPs made a decision in 2015 to stop taking Medicare patients because Medicare wasn't paying enough. They reversed this decision in 2018 and decided to participate in a Medicare ACO. Which provided me with a lot of extra work & didn't actually bring in any money.

Yep, many people have been so conditioned against "socialism" and regulation that we allow corporate greed to run barely restrained even though it always only hurts the poor and working class. It's vulgar to me that basic healthcare is so inaccessible to even those with employer provided insurance, like myself (out of pocket costs for needed services are prohibitive), even in the richest country on Earth. Until we wise up, it will only continue to get worse.

When my husband and I were both very sick and not being helped much by our covered doctors, I found a clinic (in WA near Seattle) that did not take insurance. We were close to disabled and decided if we could spend our savings to get well, we could go back to earning. I think the 4-hour first appointment cost about $1600 each, and produced 14-page lab results. Husband had chronic Lyme, I had CFS and we got properly treated. The doctor we saw eventually went into private practice and charges $400/ hr. We both got well, moved to CA, husband still working construction at 68, I'm still very active at 77 (jogging, mountain hiking, carry 50# feed sacks, trimming my horse's hooves, help with clearing our forest etc). We now eat mostly carnivore. The medical industry, with its standard of care, funnels us into being permanent patients taking prescriptions, having appointments, and never being actually healthy! We must focus on metabolic health, movement, outdoor activity, etc moving into old age - health is wealth!!

The health cars system here in Canada is "free" but you get what you pay for. I found several doctors on TH-cam such as Dr's. Cywes and Lustig and Hyman and William Li who have made me way healthier than my family physician. The system is to blame, not the doc. The system only reimburses them when they give you a pill not when they tell you to stop drinking. One can't prescribe a healthy diet and get paid for it as a physician. So their actions follow the money sadly.

You are so right that the medical sick care system is funneling us into taking prescriptions, needing appointments, and then being in worse health. I am always happy to see that people are waking up to this fact. I was seeing a holistic medical doctor for a thyroid issue. Normally that requires a one time a year appointment. This doctor wanted me to go in to his office 4 times, or more, a year at $250 an appointment. He could have easily gotten me stabilized within a few months but he tried to drag it out for 3 years in order to line his wallet. He demanded that I get $1,000's of dollars worth of tests but he didn't know how to straighten anything out if he saw something that was not right. He was a bully too because he couldn't accept that I had some knowledge of how to manage myself---he wanted me completely dependent on him for every little choice or decision.

Struggling to keep up with the entirety of the overhead (taxes included) and making very little for myself at the end of the day. Not just Medicare, but the insurance industry through “managed care” with all the humiliating contracts and over utilization requests/reviews etc . The stress was overwhelming and it just wasn’t fun anymore. Good luck to the new doctors. I totally understand not taking insurances. My husband was billed $17,000+ for radiation treatments because Medicare said he didn't get a referral 😆🤣😆-- as though a person would simply walk into an oncologist's office and ask for radiation treatments on their own. He had a preauthorization letter, but still, it took several hours of our time and the hospital's time to clear it up. I used to work in health insurance and my husband was a health provider himself, so we knew it was a mistake and that we should call and ask for them to look into it (and the error was resolved without us owing anything except the usual copays, etc.) -- but what if we hadn't known that? Having cancer is stressful enough without having to deal with that BS.

Yes. It was an oversight, a mistake. And the stress going through treatment. But this goes on all the time in various ways in the health insurance industry market. GoFundMe events for non-covered treatments, denial notices.
Long story short. My PCP put me in for an MRI on my knee for pain not decreasing. My insurance declined and prescribed X-rays instead and eight PT treatments.
The X-rays turned up nothing. But unfortunately, I couldn't afford the deductible and was waiting to be transitioned back on to Medicaid from my Essential plan. (If I remember, the X-ray or MRI would be covered. But I would have had a deductible for the PT. Something like this). So I was walking around with my painful knee for about five more weeks till I fortunately became Medicare eligible.
I knew something was definitely wrong with my knee. Therefore I didn't want to do the PT. I got a referral from my PCP to an orthopedic Dr. (They wanted a referral) He said it's probably a torn meniscus and put me in for an MRI.
To make a short story longer:
Yep. Sure enough a bucket handle tear. It's a more extensive tear. It might have been a slighter tear but got worse walking around on it for that amount of time. Who knows... I'm just saying...
So here I was walking around all that time in pain because the insurance Dr/coding is trying to save money for the insurance company. My PCP listening to my story about my injury knew best.
Anyway I had the torn piece removed. AND I might have had a lot less removed if I had it MRId much sooner.
So far I don't have knee wear from the missing cushion support of my meniscus. But eventually I could.

A patient's perspective: two years ago I made the decision to take our health insurance from high premiums low deductibles to low premiums high deductibles and the reason was quite simple. A lot of our health care was being denied by the insurance company and it was a continual fight with each side doctors and insurance companies saying it was the other party's fault. I said; "I quit!". I am now paying a low premium for basic medical taking the money saved from premiums and paying my doctors directly. No more fighting and I find with the Ketovore diet that I am healthier and am off all meds except my antihistamines. I got sick and tired of being sick, tired, and broke as a joke!! The insurance companies seem to be making behind the scenes deals that limit your access to healthcare or make it unaffordable for you to access the services your Dr is suggesting. I have seen pharmacist that state that the insurances copay for meds, cost you more than if you were paying cash, and then a large part of that copay is returned to the insurance companies. The free market can work, when the players arent rigging the game to largely benefit them only.

I have personally experienced how this profit driven MO is crippling medical practices and interfering with my good doctor’s efforts to manage my care. I am deeply concerned for my doctor and by extension, for my ability to continue getting quality medical care. It has taken years to establish the trust and good rapport that I have with my doctor. If she is forced out of practice, I’m screwed. Some of the specialists I have been referred to seem like dimwits. It makes me angry that my doctor must refer me to a specialist even though she is quite knowledgeable and capable. She is helping me manage a very complex terminal disease through lifestyle since there is currently no treatment that is appropriate for me. Part of that management involves closely monitoring my blood sugar with a CGM. My insurance company resisted, but her staff spent hours doing what was necessary to get them to cover it. And the amount she received for her services? Paltry! It’s utterly disgusting.

My doc went to conceirge practice years ago for the same reason. I pay an annual fee for access and care. The current medical model is a sick care management one. I am thankful there is a transition for younger docs to understand functional/patient specific care. Your videos help in this regard. I hope you can continue to produce them. Consider doing a video on nebulizing food grade h2O2. It is curative for URIs.

Our healthcare system is terribly broken! We are Medicare age, but also go to a concierge doctor and happily pay for the healthcare wellness and focus we receive. I bet your practice will still boom because you care and are helping people seek wellness not just write scripts!

We are a fee for service physicians group with a hospital contract and could not make ends meet. We finally forced the hospital to pay us a stipend in 2023, otherwise, we could not survive (we will see how long it will take for the hospital to cancel our contract, lol). Long hours, 24/7/364 coverage, physician burn-out, unable to recruit new physicians and poor reimbursement exacerbated by significant FREE care via uninsured ER services. This is not sustainable.

Understanding is what people need to give you. I know there are medications I have found natural cheaper ways to handle my issues. I can't do that for everything but changing my diet and doing what I can just seems prudent. I found the information now I need to act on it.😊 From Angola Indiana. Best Wishes for the New Year 🎉🎊

We don't have this problem in the UK (yet) where healthcare is free unless you want to pay to go private.
The US system is insane. In no other developed country do you have to worry about bankruptcy in order to access essential treatment.

I live in the UK which has the NHS. It's struggling/ failing because no one except the workers on the front line taking the chronic illnesses such as obesity, diabetes and associated conditions seriously. Which means the system is swamped with sick people. This has been warned about for decades. I was a health worker for 40years in an acute setting and a senior cardiologist talked about this situation back in the 1990's. Like the insurance companies they are trying to cut costs hence it becomes difficult to initiate good advice and follow up. I am lucky I discovered you on you tube and have lost 133lbs but I worry for those that need help to make that change. These channels are a life saver for us who need advice with nowhere else to go.

Im not an actual patient, but rather a virtual one. You have helped me more than any doctor I've ever had. I completely understand your position and decision, and if I were fortunate enough to have an in-person consultation, I would have no qualms writing you a personal check!
In fact, I admire your decision. Insurance in this country is out of control, and because theyre self-regulating, they wont change until it would help theyre bottom line.
More doctors should take this approach!
    Happy New Year!

I've seen the burn out going on here in our local doctors since C19 started. The medical industry never returned to how it was prior to C19. We pay higher ins rates and get less service. I think more doctors will stop taking insurance as time goes on.

Thank you for your honesty doctor. I’m 76 years old and have known for a long time how the government treats doctors. I always feel like apologizing to them. Our country is in serious trouble and it’s largely because of government interference in everything. It’s so true what President Reagan said are the most terrifying words in the English language. “I’m from the government and I’m here to help.“ They’re a bunch of thugs and out to destroy us all. I feel sorry for the genuinely good law makers who actually want to help. God bless you and all of us.

That’s truly the sad truth. I can remember my doctor yelling on the phone in the hallway outside my room while waiting to see him. He immediately started apologizing to me when he came in to see me. He said he was so frustrated with having to fight with the insurance companies for every little thing that his patients needed and spend far too much of his day doing so. That was several years ago. It’s so much more corrupt now. You’re doing the right thing.

The system is so broken. You have helped so many get healthy and given us the tools to not need the medical system to live. My employer pays insurance costs of $20,000 a year for my family and the insurance will deny coverage. I believe insurance providers have no interest in getting people healthy and off meds. If they did they would approve CGMs for everyone regardless of diabetes status. I wish you all the best Dr. Cywes.
