Nobody mentions it was the long waited chance to get avenge for the defeat to Argentina in 1986 World Cup, when they cheated with the Hand Of God.
Hence the huge build up to the match and the anticipation.
Hence why it was a very silly thing for him to do at that time.

I remember at the time just being annoyed that Beckham got himself sent off, but when the match ended so did my frustration. What I saw the next day in the paper was horrific! And it did not end there, the hatred lasted the entire summer. If I knew the level of abuse he would get for that tap I would take my frustration back. It was bullying on a scale off the charts. To know what it is like to be bullied to see Beckham come back after that was absolutely amazing. Not anyone of those people that abused him would take a hit like Beckham did. The Phoenix that rose from the ashes. A real man came back after that world cup.

When the coach was interviewed at the end of the match he said he blamed Beckham. Simeone in the new Beckham documentary admitted acting and called the kick imaginary. I think England's coach was jealous of Beckham and felt threatened that he would steal his thunder. He benched him the whole cup basically until it messed with his head. The whole time everyone was asking why Beckham wasn't playing. Then he brings him out for the most heated game. He fed him to the wolves.

I’ m French and I just saw Beckham on Netflix. I’m literally appalled at how he was treated in England for a red card which was totally unjustified. Even simeone said it. Besides contrary to what the English said, no one knows for sure if England would have won with him staying. I felt so sorry for him. When Zidane headbutted materazzi in a final and got a red card which was far more justified, he still received an ovation a few days later in Paris.

Someone else in his situation could have been devastated emotionally and mentally. Its like everything he achieved before this red card for England’s football didn’t mean a thing and all vanished? If you’re a supporter, then you support. At any times and by any means. Even so, he came back stronger and gave millions of emotions, worldwide. I just hope England is proud with and of him. There is no way and I mean no way to this day in 2021 that what Beckham did was a red card!! A proper good referee like Collina would have called both players over and said right enough with this shit (knowing that it is a final 16 of a World Cup between two countries that hate each other and so tempers will be fuming!). He would have shouted at them both and said play on or he would have given them both a yellow. Here is why, Simeone did not only tackle or foul Becks, he had no sight of the ball, made a ten yard run and put his elbow and knee into Beckhams back and head. Now if that’s not a red then it’s a yellow at least! Remember, no intention to play the ball but intending to give a player a back injury or concussion. Then Beckham didn’t get up and kick Simeone, he tapped him softer than a baby taps a soft toy and Simeone sells better than a WWE wrestler right in front of the referee. Simeone then proceeds to exagerarte and sell a fake injury (cheating) right in front of the referee. Now if Collina was the referee and did not just shout at them, or give them both yellow cards, then he would have sent both men off. Beckham for reacting with a tap and Simeone for deliberately intending to harm an opponent with no intention of getting the ball. Further proof that this Referee was not on his game and that the match calibre was too big for him, Simeone dived earlier in the match and the referee gave Argentina a penalty. Watch it back, and you will see David Seaman come out for the ball and pull his hands away completely and not touch Simeone. Simeone sticks out his leg and hits seaman’s stomach and takes a world class dive to earn a penalty. It’s not a penalty and David Seaman gets a yellow card. Poor officiating. This match needed Collina, the best referee of all time, for one of the greatest rivalries of all time. The occasion was too big for this Danish referee.

This game was a nightmare for me. I wished so hard for the 1986 revenge and instead England got another loss. At least we got some comfort in 2002. Michael Owen was so good though.

Las Malvinas siempre serán argentinas y como no ,aún les duele que te ganemos 2 veces y ustedes ganen un mundial robándole a Alemania en el 66 más en la Eurocopa no ganan,Italia los tiene de hijos

Such a stupid decision from the ref. Simeone deserved 2 yellows there, one for the foul on beckham and pushing him into the turf, and another for faking injury. Beckham maybe deserved a yellow for the retaliation, but it was barely anything.
