- The teams of England and Argentina played a fantastic match. The two teams featured solid stars such as Rooney, Beckham, Lampard, Owen, Tevez, Crespo and others. The Argentines took the lead twice in the match. But the British did not give up, first winning back at the very end of the match, and already in stoppage time Owen snatched victory for the England team.

Coming from a German: It really is a shame this fantastic and probably best England line-up in decades didn't get the trophy it truly deserved.
We have a better team now. They were better individually back then but never played as a team because of club rivalries with the Man Utd players separating themselves from the others.
I think Eriksson was the reason. He lived off that famous 5-1 victory against Germany. If you look at the way they exited two World Cups when he was manager, it was limp. He was a little star struck by the players.

On paper that team was the best England side for decades- but somehow they just didn't reach their potential in the World cup- thinking of that freakish Ronaldhino goal that did for them in 2002.

its such a shame about michael owen. we never truly got to see him at his prime. He was only 23 when he got that career ending injury against sweden, he was not the same player after that, he couldn't run in behind defenders, he lost his pace and simply wasn;t the same. He could have been one of the greatest strikers to ever live if he hadnt landed so badly in that game.
He was a true great who never got to show the world what he had.
He was 26 years old.

What a game! Probably the best friendly I've ever seen. One thing you forget - Paul Robinson was absolutely world class for a couple of years around this time. Some fantastic saves in this game.

Because he doesn't do himself any favours with some of the daft things he says nowadays and due to the way his career fizzled out with injuries - it's easy to forget just how good a striker Michael Owen was. 40 goals in 89 appearances - and only one of them was a penalty. Adjust Kane's figures to just one penalty and it's 48 goals in 103 appearances, not so different.
