    I will never understand the people who make a big deal about the power liftgate. It’s completely unnecessary and pointless, and just another thing that can break. That and the big iPad on the dashboard are a no for me. I’ll enjoy my 2021 for another 20 years, as is.

    Thankyou for your thoughts. Great segment. From other segments/content, I've heard the change to a 4cyl turbo in the 6th gen is not about fuel economy. The change is supposedly driven more by attempting to lower emissions rather than fuel economy. Idk if that's true or not? Apparently, the 6th gen will get "1 mpg" better than the previous gen. Also, it's recommended to use premium gas on the 6th gen. Is it possible that the 6th gen will "increase" money at the pump(premium gas) compared to the 5th gen?

    • @SamkoWorkShop
      @SamkoWorkShop  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You are correct. It's gov and the epa that is forcing baby motors with turbos. It's all to lower carbon dioxide levels and tail pipe emissions. I don't think the 6th gen requires premium. And I'm hoping it gets better than 1 mpg better. But it sad times the 5th gen is gonna be gone

    • @Chubbydippin
      @Chubbydippin หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SamkoWorkShop Yeah, I proposed the question of mpg's and recommended "premium" gasoline because I'm really not sure and don't actually know the #'s. Thanks for the reply. I'm seriously considering trying to get a "new" 2024 before they're all gone. They aren't cheap, but nothing well made ever is. I weigh the how thirsty they are at the pump vs the potential of a vehicle that will last over 200k miles? At 55 yrs of age, the thought of a 2024 possibly lasting over 200k miles is very appealing despite the price. Thanks again.

    • @DJR33333
      @DJR33333 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Lowering emissions is a great thing - as long as the engine proves to be reliable and long lasting. That is what most 4Runner owners have seemed to care about. Hopefully these new engines prove to last long.

    Spot on! Also, rear seats "tumble" forward and take up storage space. Rear passenger leg room appears to be compromised, especially on egress. Yes, that battery pack on the '25 Pro/Trailhunter takes up a lot of cargo area. Who needs all that "tech" when you out on the trail or in the bush!? Whole purpose of getting out into the wilderness is to get away from tech. JMHO

  • @itsallminor6133
    @itsallminor6133 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    I think it's still going to be built in japan. That's definitely good.
    Far as the motor... ummm...
    It's a corporate motor. Meaning they will try to put it in everything, every model they can to save money. This is how we got stuck with the 3.5 liter in the tacoma (roll eyes) corporate motor shove it in everything because it's cheaper than r,& d on developing multiple engines.
    For comparison the previous 2.4 litre was in like.. camry, corolla.. 🤣.
    I'm not trying to knock the new version of the 2.4 (started in 2019 ? I think the 2.5 variant in 2017?) I'm just putting this in perspective. Like. Corolla perspective. Putting horsepower and torque numbers aside this is about the size of the 2.4 early versions in like the Toyota Corolla. Wrap your head around that. It's a small motor. Getting all this power out of it creates a lot of HEAT which lowers engine life. To compensate the HEAT they pound the coolant to it. Because well. It'll go real bad otherwise.
    Toyota has been making 4 cyclinderc engines like the 2.4 since the early eighties if not before.
    Yet In the 2000s and even later we had some warped heads, stripped head bolts pushed out. Caused from OVERHEATING and that was on non turbos. Certain years of camry really had issues. Later they also ran into the oil ring problem (basically they burn oil like .........a lot). So I can't pretend Toyota is fully genius on making 4 cylinder motors. Some, excellent. Others. Not so great.
    The current d series (think developed 2017? , and more importantly the 2.4 version , developed be beginning 2019?) have been around a while. But not enough to say long term reliability. They also haven't been put in 5000 lb trucks and pushed to 350 lb ft of torque.
    They were in the Highlander. Closest thing.
    I'm not knocking the idea. But i would seriously wait a few years.
    Toyota, while some of the 4 cylinders were near bullet proof mid 2000s on they have had some with "problems". The verdict is still out on how long a little 2.4 new series will survive in a 5000 lb vehicle. Might be fine? But even the 4 bangers in some of the earlier camry were overheating and warping heads, blowing head bolts, burning oil. And they weren't turbo pushing 350 lbs torque in a near 5000lb vehicle.
    Toyota put this motor in because a. Emmision standards ( doubt it saves much gas) and b. They could easily mass produce it (corporate motot) they can use accross multiple models. .
    They didn't put this motor combination in for you I can assure you.
    But it still might do okay. But i would wait. The early Toyota pickups with 4cylinders were reliable but weighed like half this with less stress on them.
    If you only plan on keeping it during the power train warranty, Then hey. Have at it. More torque. It'll drive better...
    Far as Toyota "we test our engines.... To extreme!!!!". Yeah whatever. If that was true the other engines before wouldn't have had issues....
    Did you know if you tilt the 3.5 litre (like say going up a hill 4 wheeling?) the oil stops circulating through the motor because it's at a angle? That's how well they tested it. 🤣. Sadly that's one of their best motors and built much like the 4.0. imagine the bad ones.
    They aren't perfect. Don't be so quick to trust this 2.4 idea in this particular application. Is all I'm saying. They had trouble with the 4 cylinder camry on some years never mind the 4 runner.
    It might be great. But...... Yuh i have doubts.....
    It's more about the tnga platform, getting ready for hybrid and electric, meeting emissions, a motor they can mass cheap produce.
    Another sad reality is the 4.0 and 3.5, despite being very reliable could have been advanced to have better fuel economy. V8 motors can get better fuel economy than these Toyota 6 cylinders . Really quite pathetic. But the reality is toyota doesnt pay for your gas, they probably don't care what it cost you. The only reason they are changing the current engines is emmisions. They have too . And you probably will only get a couple mpg more. And even though the 2.4 doesnt specify it needs high test gasoline (listed as regular unleaded) remember it's a turbo and high test is still preferred if you want to keep it running right and clean getting that full power out of it. Running regular 87 .. long term... Ehh.. iffy.

      That is the best comment here. Look at the negative comments, "You're old, you're out of touch with the market, blah blah" (the ignorance of youth is showing). Nope. It's regulations, forcing the manufacturer to tell the customer what they want. It used to be the other way around. The only thing the 4Runner actually needed was a newer transmission and they could have knocked themselves out refreshing the interior all they wanted.
      If we had listened to the governments regulations and been so in touch with "the market" then we would all just pretend to enjoy EV's. The actual market means the customer tells the manufacturer what we want and they deliver. That's how capitalism works. Every other method is doomed to disappointment and failure despite what the fidget spinner generation has been conditioned to accept and their obnoxious coping with the substandard design philosophy in a desperate attempt to be young and cool is cringe at best. There is a solid and logical reason Cessna's and Mooney's are still around and relatively unchanged in the aviation world.

    Great video, thank you for sharing your thoughts.
    I agree that the 6G 4Runner is pretty much an improved vehicle in objective measures and in the ways that consumers generally seem to desire. As you mentioned, law/regulations kind of demand smaller engines that are more efficient as well. But I do wish that Toyota would continue to build and sell 5G 4Runners simultaneously. Again, as you mentioned, they have sold more and more as the 5G has gotten older and I think it’s because of the design of the vehicle. It is simple, it is dependable, it is very capable off road, and (not including the TRD Pro) it doesn’t shatter the bank to get one. There is also a HUGE aftermarket scene for them, which keeps them relevant.
    While I also like the 6G, I absolutely will not be trading in my 5G and I would encourage anyone who is on the fence to buy a 2024 or used 5G. The V6, while merely sufficient in power and torque output, is bulletproof and I think it offers just enough tech inside and out to be relevant for the modern driver and passengers.
    Also, I think the 5G, while still aggressive, is a more conservatively-styled vehicle than the 6G and will not look as dated in 15 or more years as the new line of Toyota trucks, which feel heavily influenced by 2020s trends that I don’t think will necessarily retain their good looks once certain fads of design have changed.
    Just my two cents, thank you again.

The pre-production model is showing a payload of 895lbs. That's absurdly low for a vehicle that has a towing capacity of 6,000lbs. Let's assume you're pulling a trailer that weighs 5,000lbs and have a tongue weight of 500lbs. That means you can only have 395lbs of occupants and cargo. Makes very little sense to me. Toyota is looking out for its bottom line, and using the same platform/sharing for multiple vehicles makes financial sense. I don't mind the new Turbos, what frustrates fans, like myself, is the perception that Toyota might be intentionally "dumbing down" the 4Runner avoiding direct competition with the Lexus GX. Yhey are testing the waters at our expence to see what they can get away with. Imagine if they offered the GX's turbo6 in the 4Runner! Higher torques and power makes more sense to me in the 4Runner then the Lexus, the 4Runner is the Jack of All Trade SUV in the Toyota line. that's the way I see it. So I'll be holding onto my 2023 for a while and see how this plays out.

      I think for many of us we loved toyota because they were always ancient designs that were proven reliable, they were under powered, and ultra low tech. A combination that made them reliable. Especially in remote places and off road. All that changed now with baby turbo motors, all the tech, hybrids etc. In 2024, for the first time in history, you can not buy a new tacoma with the expectation of it lasting a decade. And in 22 same happen to the tundra and in 25 same is happen8ng to the 4 runner.

    Lets address this "bullet proof" argument for the older model. Just about anything is bullet proof when the bullet is from a beebee gun you only pumped once. I'll put money there's more "reliable" headroom in that new iforce than the old V6. If Toyota took any pointers from deconstructing the BMW B58 in the Supra, they'll be fine. The parts in question will be which ones outside of the motor are the 35s to 37s going to break?

    All I can add.....is that in my opinion......my 2020 TRD ORP "Venture" just received a very healthy resale value increase. Toyota has been in the forced induction game both Turbo and Supercharged world since the '80s. So I'm confident saying that the "math" has been done, the engineering should be sound, and......even Rolex still builds watches the same way they did in the 1950's. I would not expect any less workmanship, but what we are seeing here is from the marketing aspect of "evolving" the 4Runner. A completely unnecessary change.
    Toyota should NOT have caved in to "market" perception, at the risk of losing loyalty in their community. Hell no on the laptop screen (and other accoutrements), and seeing some reviews on the trim levels.....I am quite surprised, and first glance, quite disappointed. Base MRSP just went up (I'm assuming, haha!), for absolutely no value added reason aside from.....keeping up with whom????
    The 5th Gen 4Runner, it set the bar already, everybody else should follow.....not the other way around.
    Great content as usual Sir, appreciate your work and time! Happy Trails!

    There is a lot of ignorance being spewed out in this video. The 2.4 L turbo engine is almost 54% different than the one that you in the Lexus. It is a long stroke geometry it has had extensive heat management engineering done to it. The last time Toyota implemented a turbo charged engine was in the NX 200 T and that mule 10,000 on the bench it went an additional 600,000 miles with no problems, that is 10,000+600,000 miles. Toyota industry make the best turbo chargers in the world and their quality is second to none. The 1GR was super awesome. But the 2.4 L turbo is next level and will last just as long the naysayers will continue to spew out garbage which is totally fine. I’m gonna get a great deal on a new one, because of all the baseless negative information out there we gotta quit living in the past. Toyota has a long history of making highly reliable turbo charge engines.
