I had a Technics AM/FM CD player that had a 5-band built-in equalizer in my '70 F-150. Three way speakers in the doors and two ways on the dash. I'd park and leave the doors open at the Frisbee Golf Course and we had music blasting over most of the 18 holes!!!
This song got me through one of the worst years of my life. I was 14, living in a dysfunctional family. My sister was in a mental hospital, after trying to kill herself. My mom was an alcoholic bitch, my dad was an abusive jerk, my brother was an aggressive bully. I was so miserable, I could barely dress myself to go to school. I hated school, too. But whenever I was sitting in my room at night, crying in my closet, this song would come on the radio. It literally kept me alive through the darkest days. Thank you 🙏

Scott Musick (THE CALL's Drummer) is a good friend of mine. He is still an amazing musician after all of these years. He just released a new album this year called AMERICANA GOLD. It is amazing. There is several good songs. My favorite is called "Manana" if you are in the Tulsa Oklahoma area sometimes you can catch him playing around town! Still fantastic!
I'm a product of that era and I had never heard of this song or band. Was a huge Simple Minds fan even! Found it through Radio Paradise on the web. It isn't the first gem I've been introduced to by that station either.
I remember back when I was in college, and one of my friends told me this was a Christian group, and I just said, "NOOOOOOOO!" I had no idea contemporary Christian music could sound this good!!!
Form what I've read about the group nowhere mentions that they are a "Christian group" but then again I don't know much about them so maybe in some of their other songs which I never heard they may have a Christian theme BUT As for this song I can tell this much that it is NOT a Christian song From the lyrics I can tell that they are talking generally about believing in something whether it is the Christian god or some other god or gods or something else Believing generally in something makes as strong and gives as hope or purpose in life and that's why I like this song
@@jackalhead7433 A song doesn't have to flat out bluntly say something for it to be a part of the song. That's the antithesis of artistic expression. I'm not saying it IS DEFINITELY a religious song, I'm saying you're incorrect for trying to say what iIT DEFINITELY IS NOT. Btw, the lyrics do objectively utilize religious imagery and references. "I've been in a cave- for forty days." "This is our crime- this is our sin." Etc. Jesus? 40 days? Desert? Ring any bells? Again, I'm not arguing that it's definitely a religious song, because then I would just be saying my interpretation is right and yours is wrong; making me a hypocrite. But to say there's not an ounce of christian verbiage and references in the lyrics is just plain verifiably wrong. You can disagree with a religious interpretation, but you can't disagree with what the lyrics say.
Des Kehoe Funny because most here in the States at the time actually thought they were British. They were from different states (2 from Oklahoma)but formed in California and were a Northern California band. Michael Been said in an interview “ The Americans thought we were too British...the British thought we were too American.” One of my favorite bands and sounds of all time. Been was a musical genius and songwriter. RIP Michael.
The cover version in "The Lost Boys" didn't do this song justice, but in "Waco" its poignancy resounded. With only a few minutes of power left they play this, and, among the mostly angry FBI, Gary Noesmer's reaction says it all. "With people like us in places like this we need all the hope we can get." Generator out.
yeah, probably because you identify with the message, which is kinda hard to miss--you think if every person was to hear this tune,or one like it with different instruments/different language/etc.,that maybe at least SOME people would be less violent, less depressed, less GREEDY..one can only speculate I guess..
Love this one and Let the Day Begin. Wonderful lyrics, spiritual and deep, more hopeful than anything else. And Michael Been's voice is strong but sweet.
BaBa Booey WOW I didn't know Michael died I seen them back in the nineties when they played their set on acoustic guitars strapped into a couple of effects. the lead guitarist was playing a regular Les Paul and made the same keyboard sound of this song on the chorus part. it sounded so smooth and identical but you could still tell it was a guitar.
I just heard this song for the first time - wow! I really likes Tim Cappello's cover, but this just blew me away as it's full of passion and really tight musicianship. Many thanks for posting this - I'm definitely going to check out the rest of this band's songs.
RIP Michael Been what a band...only good memories! Nostalgia deluxe.... "I still believe through the cold and through the heat...through the crowd and through the cheers!"
This is one of the greatest songs of all time. The 80's were also a great time. Even though it had It's challenges. The only way I'd go back to the 80's. Is if my 1977 Buick Regal would be there waiting for me. Because my mechanic modified the engine for me. He did this for me back then before he retired from his profession. I supplied the High Performance Parts. Just about everyone wanted to buy my car. Sometimes I still think about my Buick. The 1977 Buick Regal were good cars to modify in those days. 1977 Buick Regals were last of the big cars for that year. This is a great song and a cool song to play. Thanks for posting because this is a great band.
HOPE is the start.. FAITH in what is not seen is what seals the deal.. It comes down to the simplistic thought and through the soul of man.. He came as us..A child..He lived, died a death no man has every endured (for all of us.You, Me, Everyone)..His life given was a gift.. It's not forced on us, BUT, we can choose to accept the perfect man's blood for a gift beyond the grave of earth.. The tomb is empty, the body gone.. Isiah predicted it almost 800 years before.. I believe He's coming AGAIN..

THEN I KNOW I CAN BE AT PEACE ONCE I DEMISE CAUSE THEY WON'T HAVE TO FEAR OF THEM NOT HAVING A HOME AND BEING HOMELESS IN WHICH AT ONE POINT OF MY LIFE I WAS. NO ONE DESERVES TO BE HOMELESS EVEN NOW IN WHAT THIS WORLD IS FACING SO THIS SONG IS VERY RELAVANT TO ME DURING THIS TIME OF NEED. IF ONLY IF ONLY MORE PEOPLE GAVE A DAMN WE MIGHT ALWAYS BE STRUGGLING BECAUSE WE ALL SHOULD BE TOGETHER BOUNDED AS 1......
I HOPE AND PRAY FOR EVERYONE STAYS SAFE AND HEALTHY, HAS FOOD CLOTHING AND SHELTER.... AND IF U CAN PLZ SPREAD THE LUV TO THOSE U SEE WHETHER ITS FOOD, CLOTHING OR EVEN SOMETHING SIMPLE AS SUPPLYING THEM WITH COLD WATER AND A SACK LUNCH LIKE THE WAY I DO AND TEACH MY KIDS... THERE'S A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A WANT AND A NEED, WE HAVE MORE THEN WHAT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE.... WE REALLY SHOULD BE PRACTICING LUV THY NEIGHBOR AS WE WOULD FOR OURSELVES AS WE DON'T KNOW THERE STRUGGLES OR STORY...EVEN SHARING THIS VIDEO WITH SOMEONE U KNOW NEEDS ENCOURAGING WORDS IT MAY MAKE THEM SMILE AND U MAY HELP THEM ESPECIALLY IF IR OVERWHELMED WITH THINGS...
TAKE CARE AND GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY 🙏 PLZ DON'T TAKE THIS COMMENT WRONG OR FEEL THAT I'M LOOKING FOR SYMPATHY... I JUST WANT TO HELP OTHERS TO SPREAD THE LOVE..

Check him out on Reverb Nation and buy his new album!!!
Where about in T-Town?
This is an amazing song... I had to go back and listen to it once i saw it was on The Protomen's new record, and im glad i did, this song is great.
I still believe in Jesus!
I'm a product of that era and I had never heard of this song or band. Was a huge Simple Minds fan even! Found it through Radio Paradise on the web. It isn't the first gem I've been introduced to by that station either.
I'm very atheist, but I still like this song 😆 😅
Back in the 1980's Mike and his music was a "Heads Up" message for people to lift their heads and look around.
Tim Cappello's version is pretty good, but this song has that 80's charm that is just undeniable. God this is so good.
The lyrics, the groove, the heart, sublime!
they opened for Simp Minds...great Nite. Mike came back for encore.. Ottawa and hot sweaty nite. felt gooood.
I saw a show with them in Tampa.
I keep remembering Lost Boys....I absolutely love this song!
Another beautiful prayer. Such hope and love,
Yay, the Call are back, with Robert Levon Been on vocals. Wondrous day!
I remember back when I was in college, and one of my friends told me this was a Christian group, and I just said, "NOOOOOOOO!" I had no idea contemporary Christian music could sound this good!!!
It gets more interesting. Before The Call, Michael Been was the bass player for Myrrh Records' house band "a band called David".
Form what I've read about the group nowhere mentions that they are a "Christian group" but then again I don't know much about them so maybe in some of their other songs which I never heard they may have a Christian theme BUT
As for this song I can tell this much that it is NOT a Christian song
From the lyrics I can tell that they are talking generally about believing in something whether it is the Christian god or some other god or gods or something else
Believing generally in something makes as strong and gives as hope or purpose in life and that's why I like this song
@@jackalhead7433 Your interpretation, man.
@@caesarstrings No it's not my interpretation listen to the lyrics
Nowhere says about believing in Jesus or the bible god
2019 and I am discovering The Call. Never made it here in the UK but I am loving their stuff
@@dtmjax5612 Nice comment.
I know Simple Minds who are still big here cover let the day begin
Shame about Michael
The cover version in "The Lost Boys" didn't do this song justice, but in "Waco" its poignancy resounded. With only a few minutes of power left they play this, and, among the mostly angry FBI, Gary Noesmer's reaction says it all. "With people like us in places like this we need all the hope we can get." Generator out.
This song is perfect
Still hits home
I love this song.....I love this song.....I love this song....etc...
yeah, probably because you identify with the message, which is kinda hard to miss--you think if every person was to hear this tune,or one like it with different instruments/different language/etc.,that maybe at least SOME people would be less violent, less depressed, less GREEDY..one can only speculate I guess..
Michael!
So perfect , so powerful !
Late 86 early 87. Still rocking it now in 2022
Love this one and Let the Day Begin. Wonderful lyrics, spiritual and deep, more hopeful than anything else. And Michael Been's voice is strong but sweet.
Yeah R.I.P Michael Been - I saw them at My Father's Place on Long Island -- cool show!

Thanks for posting because this is a great band.
this feels like a song that should have an awesome video with it.
Lost Boys comes to mind before Waco for us! :)
Great song.
Soo many memories with this song growing up....missing good ole So Cal.
My husband Robert and I saw The Call in concert in 1985 at the Celebrity Theater in Phx AZ! We were just married and had recently committed our lives to Christ! Best concert ever! These guys rocked!
Never heard this song before. And I was a 80s music lover. WACO mini series brought me here. LOVE THIS TUNE ! Too much alcohol consumed in 80s that I missed this one. Looks like I have to rewind back. Thank you THE CALL !
So.... you never saw Lost Boys?
Completely relevant in today's times...
Still. Epic!
Very powerful lyrics. What a song!

LOL...Damn it, after clicking on this and hearing it again, I nearly choked.
I thought the same exact thing! GET TO DA CHOPPA!
BMWHEY
CAN'T. STOP. LAUGHING!
I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought this....
Peter Gabriel referred to The Call as the “future of music” and I believe him, I love the Tim Cappello version as well and see his cover of it as carrying out part of that future.
It’s a good song ,…I put a thumbs up 👍🏽
the first band I ever saw...it was in Chicago at the Metro and I think I was 12 or 13...My older sis and her older boyfriend took me and I've been a fan since. Must have been 1989 give or take but this band is truly timeless!
Great sound..loved them for years and years..evocative
Powerful, inspirational and absolutely fricken beautiful!
