Funny how Peel didn't do their homework to see how viable Donny (not Sheffield FFS, it is almost in Lincolnshire)before the bent council put in allthe infastructure for them. Now it is a great place to build an estate.

We need this airport especially as Hull is only small and Leeds subject to diversions. In addition to Jet2, Ryannair, Wizzair could KLM be persuaded to use it. What about cargo flights too. Maybe the landing and use of the airport was too expensive often a problem with smaller airports.

Good point, Jet2 are expanding their fleet considerably at the moment, and being a Yorkshire-based airline, this could be of interest to them.

The reason it shut was Wizz Air pulling out. It would have left DSA with TUI as its only operator, who are very seasonal. Peel also runs Liverpool Airport which provided Air Traffic Control services for Doncaster remotely from Liverpool. The Airport needs to be at least mothballed instead of the short-sighted decision of building homes on it. As we've seen before, it's easy to close an airport, but it's incredibly hard to build a new one, especially in a country as compact as ours, with authorities as obstructive as ours.

    Latest news:-
Doncaster council can’t afford to buy the airport because they would go bankrupt and the rate payers would have their bills hiked up even more. ✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️

Peel Group the owners make a success of regional airports, most notably Liverpool JLA. Doncaster was a dog and they could not even give it away as an airport. What are the locals proposing to do - run around flapping their arms?

I remember when RAF Finningley shut. The locals started a campaign to ensure it would not have a second life as a civilian airport. No nasty aeroplanes here please, we’ve just got rid of the RAF! That was very effective. Eventually though, Peel got involved with TUI to reopen the place and eventually found it was not viable. I’m sure some companies operating out of Leeds Bradford might have moved but the airport was going to charge like a wounded bull so they decided not to move. Also bear in mind it is 45 (horrible) miles by road from Leeds, further from Bradford and Sheffield, Doncaster and Scunthorpe are not big enough to provide sufficient traffic to keep an airport open. So Leeds passengers are required. Also remember, we have the nasty green fascists who together with the unelected Net Zero zealots want airports shut and aircraft grounded. This is creating making airport investments in the UK high risk propositions. Remember this when you soon travel to Germany or France to catch a long haul flight because they are taxed to extinction in Britain.

I remember when I worked at Asda in Doncaster, and numerous employees all left to be security and package handlers when it first opened. They always believed it would be bigger than Manchester.

"It's the hub of the country."
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.
That illustrates the fundamental problem with the campaigners: they don't understand economics. Doncaster and Sheffield most assuredly are not "the hub of the country". They are a minor regional centre. Minor regional centres in the UK can't support a viable international airport on their own. See multiple other examples. Near where I am Coventry is a similar situation, although its proximity to Birmingham really didn't help it either.
For an airport to be viable on its own it needs a metropolitan area with a population well into the millions. Sheffield and Doncaster conurbations alone barely reach a million. Beyond the immediate area there will be other airports to travel to. For example it's not much more hassle for someone from much of Lincolnshire to travel to East Midlands Airport which has passenger numbers nearer to 5 million than 2.
Airports like this don't work. It's as simple as that.

Remember, it didn't just serve Doncaster, but people in places for whom the nearest alternative airport was nearly three hours drive away, and much longer by public transport.
