Why Good Movies Like Furiosa Bomb At The Box Office

  • Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga lost a lot of money.
    And to be fair, Mad Max Fury Road wasn't the biggest box office hit in the world, but Furiosa is one of the biggest box office bombs of 2024...
    ...and it's not because the movie is bad (or has a "girl boss" in the lead role).
    George Miller's fifth Mad Max movie is one of the best action movies of the decade so far, and although studio executives who lose money don't care as much about that, I wanted to not only review Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, but I also wanted to talk about why good movies (or even great movies), like Furiosa BOMB at the box office, and what we as film fans can do to help promote those movies that are so special.

      Anytime Dan! I agree in that aspect, it kind of went too overboard with it, which was what made Fury Road so awesome

    Ill do ya one better, give it to Tony Gilroy. Sure Denis and Nolan are masters in no uncertain terms but Gilroy has shown what he can do and if he is able to keep up that level of storytelling and not engage with the Skywalker part of the universe, then STAR WARS might be saved. Gilroy obviously has a feel for the aesthetic and the general vibe of A New Hope without relying on the names from it to make a show thats amazing, and could likely dive deeper into other avenues that havent been explored in that universe without invoking Skywalker as a crutch. I LOVE Denis Villeneuve and think hes one of, if not THE, greatest film maker of all time, but I dont think hes a good fit for STAR WARS.

      @chaseazarian  6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I think Gilroy would be much better than the current situation (Andor is proof enough), but I think Denis would still crush it regardless! Thanks for the comment Scott!

      @@chaseazarian But would he be allowed to or would his vision get corrupted ala Edgar Wright with Marvel where they wanted the name but when it came down to it, they didnt want to give him the control he wanted? I kinda feel like that would be an issue with Denis and he would exit before things got too far. I cant see him being a part of that system where they have a mandate on where this entire thing is supposed to be going. This is all speculation but I just dont know that he would be a good fit for that sort of thing because he is an auteur. Cheers.

    Maybe people want Mad Max in a Mad Max movie?

    • @noname-hf9ty
      @noname-hf9ty 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Why? The world George Miller created is so diverse and ripe with potential for different stories, it was so cool to see the world of Mad Max from a POV different from Max himself. I think you're just being narrow minded

    • @thelaw6267
      @thelaw6267 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@noname-hf9ty Or it could be that Max is the main character, focal point and face of the franchise, and his wandering the wasteland as a drifter getting into adventures, meeting new folks and factions is the entire basis of the MAD MAX universe? Furiosa is what happens when you drift too far away from a franchise's roots. They also waited way too long and could have struck the iron while it was hot, not a decade later. If they had done a Furiosa movie (without Mad Max being in the title as false advertisement of course) and Mad Max: The Wasteland back to back within a couple or so years of Fury Road, it probably would have worked out.

    Because it's not a good movie.
    One of the most disappointing films I've watched in years. Felt like a parody of Fury Road.
    The camerawork and cinematography, the score and the script all are all mid as fuck.
    And the CGI was actually horrible. Most green screen shots had blurry haloing and poor comp tracking, the car physics often looked fake and the digi doubles' animations were uncanny.

    • @chaseazarian
      @chaseazarian  6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      To each their own! I thought the camerawork and cinematography were pretty close to Fury Road and the script at least had MORE, but score was definitely not memorable for me (and CGI was a little out of hand), Fury Road is the better of the two without question. Thank you for the comment man!

      @@chaseazarian I'm gonna vent as I have nothing better to do, and record my feelings for posterity, so feel free to ignore this. Cheers.
      Well I can see it being liked for a dumb fun movie, but more often then not I see people comparing it to Fury Road, and it was so much more than that. So I get combative.
      I'm just incredibly disappointed with the movie. Can't really remember the last time I was this offended to be honest. Probably when I got a VHS with Mortal Kombat Annihilation and saw Jonny Cage get his neck snapped immediately.
      Camerawork was too shaky and had way too many gimmicks like constant zoom in on the driver's face. All because Fury Road used it a couple of times for effect, the new cameraman (maybe it was the director though idk) decided to parrot it till it lost all novelty.
      The story in Fury Road was excellent for it being a focused adventure - go to a place and come back, while having the characters interact and evolve. Just telling a story and showing pieces of the post apocaliptic world. It's coherent and logical, with visible character choices and consequences. It has a through line plot.
      Furiosa on the other hand is a meandering mess that is deep as a puddle and muddy as that same puddle. It jumps between places, times and set pieces without developing the characters almost at all. Like how we know literally nothing about the Praetorian Jack (the only other non-villain character) or how after he and Furiosa get captured they turn out to be in love and start to talk all lovey-dovey. Which comes out of nowhere and goes nowhere, too, because he is killed off-screen in the next 10 minutes and NEVER brought up again (some love that was huh). Even at the end when confronting Dementus, Furiosa is still only fixated on her mother and the Green place. And THEN she randomly decides to help the Mothers escape, despite not interacting with them on-screen for longer than a couple of seconds.
      The movie is just a montage of semi connected scenes. They're cool scenes sure, but then again CGI is ass in this movie.
      Furiosa feels like she had no character ark or development at all (except saving Jack). She just does things. Most any scene has no connection to the next one.
      Like you'd think the map on the Furiosa's left arm would play some crucial role in the plot, but nope, it's forgotten entirely. She steals the car from Scrotus, Joe's son, but never gets in any trouble for it. The whole Dementus fertilized fruit tree is just ridiculous - not considering the plausibility of him surviving this, the guy's a psychopath that gets bored after 10 minutes of sitting around, no way he would wait years for the tree to grow. He'd just bite his tongue to find out what happens. Like the whole movie, this scene is just there to "look cool", damn if it makes sense or not.
      And I could maybe ignore all this if the CGI wasn't SO shit. Some green screen shots on the War Rig actually reminded me of Spy Kids 3D, it's so bad. Sometimes car physics were wonky af and a lot of digital character replacements had ps1 animations like Furiosa's mother hopping on the horse in the beginning of the film or little Furiosa running.
      And the young Furiosa face replacements were too ambitious I think. It had a huge uncanny valley feeling for me.
      I get that this movie had a budget comparable to Fury Road with A LOT more cgi imagery, but maybe that is the exact problem.
