I definitely agree with the over abundance of *obvious* CGI in this. It becomes so apparent in the credits when they show snippets of Fury Road. The difference is night and day.
YES!!!!! That was a badddddddddddddd decision...I was like "why can't I watch THAT film instead???"
All due respect, Furiosa is 10x bigger then fury road in terms of everything (custom made vehicles, way more settings with gastown and bullet farm and a huge amount of stunt workers) they can only do so much without going over budget
@@hozkiia personally, this shows why story trumps spectacle. With less they did more.
@@MarcusFlemmings SO TRUE!
so true !
"I do not want to see actors ~having fun~ anymore" spoke to me on a deep level
HHAAHAHAHAAHA! love this!
Yeah those sock cuckers get paid lass loads to do a job and they want to goof off . They are so narcissistic it's sad. They honestly believe we want to see them having fun in a movie more than the plot. Chris Hemsworth is one of those hit or miss actors. That's what I was worried about with this. I'm glad it wasn't Chris Pratt cast in it I fucking hate Chris Pratt with a passion. He made the Jurassic world movies almost unwatchable.
I saw this in a theater with laser projection and imax whatever amenities. The seats also were spraying water and moving like on a roller coaster ride. It’s called 4DX I believe. It was fucking great. Idk how it would’ve been if seen in standard. The CGI looked good in the 4DX version
Fab comment! Love that you enjoyed as well :) I didn't hate it, but that CG didn't work for me!
I am quite surprised anyone has such a big problem with Furiosa. I liked it. The CGI was bad at the beginning but overall it's stylized to look kind of cartoony and it all fit to me.
april fools was 2 months ago
@@hopwaffles Yup, don't know why he made this video.
My only issue was the use of cgi. The whole making of fury road was a testament practical effects
@@diegeticfridge9167 Honestly the making of Fury Road kind of ruined the magic for me, considering almost every scene had CGI or green screen to finish off the final product.
I did like it. Saw it twice. I’m just saying it could have been even better without the glaring CGI. My only complaint.
Awe, come on Mr. Scrooge. Hemsworth was fu-king great in this.
Imagine complaining about an OTT villain in Mad Max
HA! He was okay. Just okay. Felt like he was dong his best Heath Ledger!
OTT is fine, but do it well!
@@MarcusFlemmings
LOL. You're savage, mate.
No he wasn’t. He was okay. The whole movie sucked.
Imagine not remembering the names of characters in a movie and then giving that movie a review
I mean....honestly, if you didn't get what the joke was there then this review certainly wasn't for you!
There was cgi in fury road too. Just more seamless and better realized. The complaint should be about bad cgi, not cgi itself.
I think Fury Road focused on real action. Yes they used CGI, but more for compositing real things captured in camera. Furiosa seemed to use more action that was completely animated and those floating CGI camera moves. Fury Road had that visceral real feel to it, and Furiosa really felt like CGI. Rewatch Fury Road, you'll feel the difference.
@@gurujot951completely agree
But it was all real cars and real location in Niambia they blend with CGI very well in Fury Road but in Furiosa have a lot of digital cars.
Furryoso? Dammit, now all I can hear is Hermione Granger saying "It's FuriOsa, not FuriosA".
:-D
FuiOSOSOOO! Thanks for the comment!
That scene from Total recall that you just put on the screen had me dying laughing
Why is everyones hair always so perfect and hold immovable shape? Actors are only ever concerned with their friggin hair.
Also, Anna Joy didn't cut her hair. The buzz cut was fake on top of a bald cap, and her head was bulgy and weird looking.
Yeah, she wanted to but the director stopped her!
I know understand how noticeable and smooth the cgi was, but I didn’t find it to be distracting at all (this is coming from a guy who loves The Flash because the story was fantastic but the CGI didn’t took me away). This is still one of my favorite movie of the year so far. Great story with tons of action, and it’s the kind of action flick I love to go to. I thought Furiosa’s character was so well crafted in such a powerful way, a character that I always want to root for and respect. She’s definitely up there with Sara Conor and Ellen Ripley.
I heard recently that Tom Hardy's character in Mad Max isn't Mad Max, its the boomerang boy from the road warrior, heard this and I can't stop thinking about it
...hmmmm, interesting! I don't think that's true though....cos in Furiosa the same car/jacket etc that we see in Fury Road appears - big love for the comment!
It's not true, he's Mad Max. The feral kid (or "boomerang boy") became the chief of his tribe and never saw Max again.
Got to be honest, one of my top 5 favorite movies. To me, the CGI was good 90% of the time, and the only real eye sore was the bullet farm scene (gosh that digger hitting war rig broke immersion real fast). Lets not lie to ourselves, this is a completely different production from the fury road. The previous mad max, was supposed to be a f…load of jaw dropping practical effects, with not too much storytelling, this one was meant to be quite the opposite, filling many of the plot holes of its predecessor, so we shouldnt eat the ice cream and expect it to taste like a steak
I thought people were overreacting, so I watched it on IMAX and holy shit. The effects were shockingly bad. I was so taken out by it, I looked around the theater and it seemed like some people were just as baffled as I was. How did he get away with this? In a series known for incredible practical effects and maneuvers, this film was MEDIOCRE!
Hhahaa! I didn't dislike it as much as that, but it does have problems! Thanks for the comment :)
My favorite movies Ive seen this year have been in vandas room, la chimera, and furiosa. The scope and messiness of this film are incredible, the brutality, the detail, the Aussie sense of humor. It sacrifices the tightness of the first film but trades it for this delirious sprawl of set pieces and locations and strange characters. Fury road is a distillation of one set piece stretched out to feature length, furiosa is more patient and novelistic and I can see that turning off people with shorter attention spans which is a shame.
Also, speaking as a cinematographer, I thought the visuals were incredible and clearly uses a ton of practical effects, stunts, and location shooting. I felt the cg married the practical work very nicely and it really doesn't feel too different from fury road in that respect.
It's a swing for the fence and exactly the type of movie people always complain about not being made anymore. It's creative, bold, unique, adult, colorful cinema. Yet here we are, it's right in front of us and we are letting it flop.
My friend, actually love this comment! At least you have some wonderfully constructed arguments FOR the film :) totally respect that! Stick around.
Thank goodness. I thought I was alone. First of all George Miller has been directing these films since Mel Gibson was the star. After Fury Road, I had full confidence in him in this new era. This movie is great. The script is solid. The way its shot is just as good as Fury Road. Anyone in their right mind would give this movie at least an 8.
@@blackanimedude4095 Not any films ever made deserve an 8!
@@MarcusFlemmings Lol. That's just BS.
@@blackanimedude4095 I meant to write *many
Agreed. about actors not having fun anymore.
On the CGI bit all big budget action movies have a lot of CGI, sometimes the CGI is obvious and kills the vibe like in this movie, other times it's so well done you think there is no CGI like Fury Road. Rest assured both movies CGI'd every single scene.
Great comment! And yes, Fury Road had CG - but the prequel looks ropey!
You are so spot on with this. Furiosa was good but the obvious CGI scenes took away from the action and suspense. No idea why Miller decided to take this route but it’s really too bad. Furiosa could have been so much better.
Perhaps its the footage and photography style, not the CGI, because they were really on the desert, on cars and trucks etc. And yet, they still had problems with the production, rain mostly, and the fact that they are not as young like in 2015 to make a hole movie under the sun and so on...I mean, it's not just one thing yk
@@Elefanteazulll I keep hearing that they were “really on trucks, cars, ect.” I really don’t see it that way. Several of the truck shots looked cgi’d. But I could be wrong. If so I’ll eat my words. Regardless,,,Furiosa is a very good movie. The CGI is my only complaint.
@@Frank-cw2xy from what I've seen by the making of footages leaked, and photos, we can see them on the stunts, making it for real. By my experience the way that the photography director, Simon Duggan, the same from 300, directed left the things very highlighted on the screen, witch makes the sensation of "everything it's kinda false" and non natural. Maybe, it's to rhyme the narrative make by the History Man, who's telling this story of his memories. I don't know, for me surely felt strange, but the movie is great because of the many details we can see.
@@Elefanteazulll I can see your point and you may be right.
Fury Road spoiled us by setting the bar as high as it goes with visual effects. This film was a bit disappointing at how downgraded that effort was. Even as CGI goes, it was bad; this wasn't James Cameron level stuff, a lot of action sequences looked disappointingly fake even to me.
Overall, it was still an interesting movie. It was EPIC seeing Immortan Joe in his prime, honestly I think he stole more scenes than Furiosa. And Miller introduced us to plenty of new wasteland freaks.
It was a downgrade in certain important ways yes, but I don't think it was TOTAL ass.
Looks like a good streaming watch.
I agree, the CGI was incredibly disappointing. You didn't even mention my favorite bad CGI moment, when the war boys holding spears on top of the semi truck pass through the gate into one of the towns, their spears clip right through the gate, I even paused it and went frame by frame and the spear tips all just clip right through lmao. Overall I think it would have been a fine movie without the horrendous CGI, and towards the end ATJ sounded so much like Charlize Theron it was uncanny. Probably didn't help on the CGI though when I watched fury road just before, like looking at a picasso then looking at a highschool art project. Like, ffs, you've spent over a hundred million on the movie, can you REALLY not just give the poor shmucks on CGI a little more time and manpower to make it look right? Absolute Disney-Marvel amateur hour. Also I see people saying the CGI was supposed to look bad which is some serious copium if I've ever seen it, but even then go watch Sin City - a movie with REAL stylized CGI and notice how it looks 100x better and doesn't give you the uncanny valley feeling every time you see a moving object. The same thing happened for me with Avatar 2, like 85% of that movie was jaw dropping CGI, then they just gave up on the boat and ship CGI which looked like utter garbage ruining the immersion. I'll never forget fat and fake captain ahab hunting space whales in his 90s quality CGI speed boat, looked absolutely horrendous.
Thanks for the comment - stick around :) and agreed on these points!
Its the lighting and greenscreens.
I'm loving your video titles Marcus!
Big love Pascal! As always!
This was obvious from the promotion, the heavy cgi. I just want it to be fun. 6/10 from you for this says it's not bad. Not bad at all.
You'll love it!
Imagine disliking Furiosa and actually liking Civil War.
Yeah, the beauty of subjectivity eh! Thanks for the comment as well :)
@@MarcusFlemmings Appreciate the civility!
Went in super hyped. Left the theater feeling empty and disappointed.
Hemsworth is not worthy enough to play a villain. He's not menacing or believable as an actor. There are plenty of Aussie actors out there better suited to play that role. Eric Bana, Guy Pierce, Hugo Weaving, Jackie Weaver....yeah....Jackie Weaver bro. Also this is a revenge story not a Shakespearean play. It needed to have a three act structure not a five chapter layout. Miller is no Tarantino. If Miller wanted to do a five chapter film then he needed to sit down and actually write some dialogue. Then there's the score. Ugh. The score by Tom Holkenborg (whose name sounds more like a formula one driver than a composer) is completely forgettable and interchangeable with all of his previous works. I would have ripped composer Ludwig Göranssan away from Christopher Nolan's pretentious team and had him score this film instead. Marcus thank you for reviewing this film as mid and letting me vent about it in the comment section. Also thank you for your awesome video essays and super cool live streams. Smashed the like button. Here comes 12,000 subs bro!!!! Let's goooooooo!!!!
Whyte Noize, I thought I went in HARD, you destroyed the film! Pahaa! Wowsers. I kinda agree with a lot of the points - with regards o Hemsworh, I like him. But in this film he's having too much fun and i'm not. I would have loved a Bana or Weaving or even Russell Crowe! Huge love!
I didn't think it was a CGI problem more of a composition issue or whatever it's called when they take real elements and join them into existing shots.
Like a shot of someone riding away on a motorcycle along a dune was clearly a rider on say dirt stitched into the dune shot. It was meant to match up but it did not......
I think a lot of it was probably safety forced. Fury Road wasn't all that long ago but companies are a lot more spooked of accident litigation than ever.
yes exactly! The problem was not so much the CGI, it was the actual camerawork and lighting! If you put a bunch of actors in a studio with unrealistic lighting, it doesn't matter how good your CGI is, it will still look like 'bad CGI'
I disagree. I watched it, rewatched Fury Road and watched it again. There are action sequences that are clearly fully animated. There was a lot of floating CGI camera moves. The difference is noticeable. It seems to me that Fury Road was all captured in camera and there was definitely compositing and CGI as a flourish. But Furiosa had obvious green screen CGI fully animated BS. Definitely some real action but not enough. It didn't capture that visceral feel the first one had.
Fury Road was a hell to shoot for the cast and crew. If you have ever been behind a high budget set, it can be extremely stressful to make everything fit one precise vision.
CGI could have been better, but nothing could be better than the real thing. Which was, unfortunately, very hard to achieve on location because of weather conditions.
Oh for sure, totally agree! BUT what I would say is that the CG should have been integrated better than it was, there is no excuse for that! Thanks for the comment! Do subscribe :)
Actor's performances were great, but yeah the overused CGI looked bad and the pacing is so nonstop wish it would have taken a few breaks to flesh out the characters.
Yeah, again, not a bad film...just not great! Thanks for the comment - stick around!
It's nice seeing a content creator saying real shit good content
HUGE love for this! Do subscribe :)
Maybe catch it on film plus?
I had the same thoughts, the movie was solid, but the mediocre and overused CGI is not good for the imersion, in Fury Road they only used CGI where it was absolutely necessary i guess, lets ignore some cheesy 3d effects here and there haha - In Furiosa they used it for EVERYTHING, just simple scenes like characters leaving on a bike / vehicle (always looked fake as f***) aerial shots from a crowd of vehicles that drive along where you could tell every single vehicles is CGI, a lot of scenes just looked fake in general, you could tell the lighting was off and it was filmed in a studio / greenscreen instead of the real world, i guess the usual cinematographer who worked for/with George Miller was not onboard this time - And you could tell, Fury Road was grittier, just looked so much better overall.
So glad you pointed out the bike scenes - they are woeful - especially the earlier ones with the mother. Awful! Thanks for the comment! Stick around!
It’s De-men-tus. Like dementia cause his character was going insane. Great perspective btw.
CGI was so bad omg! Did they film in the volume?
I just saw this one yesterday and i love it. It's great. Chris Hemsworth definitely overpowers Anya Taylor-Joy in this movie. I hope he gets nominated for Awards season next year though. But i respect your opinion. 👌👌
Love this comment :) he 100% won't get nominated - it's an action movie, has flopped and the character doesn't have an Arc. But, many, like you loved the film :)
I like your video normally, and I agree, this movie has incredibly poor CGI but I bet the visual effects artists and compositors involved where rushed to shit to pull out a film with more VFX elements than practically shot footage. This is not the fault of the VFX artists and entirely the fault of the Director and studio for thinking they could "fix it in post". I hate how people blame artists who are trying their best, when in reality it's the lack of budget and time that these studios give that ends up with results like these. For context, the VFX for Furiosa where created by DNEG, the same company that did the VFX on Oppenheimer (yes it has VFX, just no CG elements, to hell with Nolan) both Dune films, First Man, Avengers Infinity war, and so much more.
I just don't like the title, don't blame "CGI", it's not an inanimate object, it's the work of artists who have spent decades creating incredible work, only to get fkd over by studios. It's too much of an insult
Thanks for the comment Ax :) if you watch the video I don't insult the CG artists...I don't even mention them. I actually blame it on the director :)
@@MarcusFlemmings I watched the video and the points you make are great, but blaming a technique in the title is the wrong way to go about it. It’s draws audiences to the wrong conclusions
WB NEED TO MAKE AN ANOTHER MAD MAX FILM
Hope they do! For sure! Thanks for the comment!
It's not the cgi, it's the plot holes that are the problem. Overall though, I loved it. Proper throwback to 80's movie making. 8/10.
Love this comment! This is how beautiful film can be - we have different opinions and that's absolutely okay :)
Just saw it and i loved it.
In a year very easy, this is a movie that i've really enyojed. I was move by the story and the caracthers. Anya Taylor Joy made a good performance and about the CGI. I'm not an expert, so i'm not gonna lie. I just notice it if is really awful like in Ant Man Quantumania.
7.5 / 10
Glad you finally saw it Recetas! We basically gave it the same mark, considering i don't give any movie a 10 :)
Its amazing that you claim the CGI is bad, when it actually isnt. It looks correct, and is supposed to be very stylized. Like what Sam Raimi does. Its supposed to be cartoony and stylized like a comic book. If you want to see what bad CGI looks like, watch really cheap films that use it.
Didn't have a problem with it, more noticeable than Fury Road but didn't take me out of it. I thought it was a great film to watch at the cinema, I guess it depends how good your home cinema set up is but watching it at home would be inferior imo.
What if the characters fun?
Well many people think the character is fun, so I guess there's nothing wrong with it!
just saw it.
i could not ignore the horrible compositing, cgi, deepfakes, joy's acting, and hemsworth's nose, enough to focus of the story.
6/10 is right
Hhaha! That might be a harsher review than I gave of it!
i think encouraging people to wait until streaming is an incredibly backwards mindset that will only damage theatres in the long run especially considering the film is already flopping. Even if you didn’t particularly love the film i think saying something like that is quite damaging for the artform. Tons of people are loving this movie and even more people could if they go to theatres. i do have some bias though as i loved this film and want it to do well so Miller can make more Mad Max films. Just my two cents.
Thanks for the comment! Can't really agree - many films are on streaming at the moment. That's the way things are going. Making people fork out money in a theater to watch a film they make not like is a worst mindset?
it's actually the issue with the cinema business at the moment, the audiences are no longer settling for mediocre, they will only go watch great films OR films with plenty of hype. Which is a good thing. Forces studios to make better films.
Gone at the days when an average film can make $500 million and that's a good thing. Iron sharpens iron!
@@MarcusFlemmings if we never no go to theatres how are we supposed to know if we like a movie? ive been suprised and disappointed by films ive seen in theatres. there is no guarantee how you’d feel. maybe i can speak like this because in my country, an imax ticket with snacks costs equivalent to 10 us dollars. don’t really know what its like in other countries.
thats the thing though, i don’t think this film is mediocre at all, i think its pretty incredible actually. I brought a few people to see it with me and they loved it too. A majority of the highest grossing films from last year were mediocre slop, those days are definitely still here. its the fault of audiences not willing to broaden their horizons outside of recognisable franchises. this is mostly attributed to the quick-to-streaming model studios love. a film succeeding via word of mouth is virtually impossible nowadays. films like furiosa flopping will only encourage studios to keep pumping out half-assed slop because the only things making money are average films.
@@ryanazman19 Love your response! So for me, the problem is a lack of trust in movie atm - they're NOT good. This film is no mediocre and I did praise it, but I also pointed out it's flaws. We have to really start making better movies - this film is nowhere as good as Fury Road and many people didn't like Fury Road - hence the small box office return for the last one. Both films have problems. But we really have no responsibility to keep going to gamble on bad movies at the cinema - it;s up to them to make better movies and then the trust will improve and the box offices will grow!
@@MarcusFlemmings i wish it was as simple as “make better movies” but i don’t really see the correlation between the quality of a film and it succeeding when a majority of successful films are slop. these ‘flaws’ are subjective but im not here to debate about the quality of furiosa. i respect the criticism even if i disagree for the most part. its just that im a big advocate for keeping cinemas alive so i really disagree with the sentiment of ‘waiting until its on streaming’ as all it does is reduce incentive for studios to keep films in theatres basically killing any chance of it slowly growing success. even when great movies are out, its out of theatres in 3 weeks. not the fault of quality more so a lack of patience from studios.
Am I right that not a single blockbuster with a woman on a lead role wasn't successful after the accidental success of Captain Marvel in 2019? Or did I forget something?
I mean, that is true - I don't want to turn this into a gender thing. I love me a female lead story....that isn't too female-centric. But yes, they've all flopped.
The Long Kiss Goodnight is, in my opinion, I highly under appreciated female driven action movie that was WAY ahead of its time.

hahahaahaa!!!! It's just a play on words!

I don't agree that the CGI was an eyesore. I watched in Imax and everything looked fantastic.
When the scenes from Fury Road played over the credits, they didn't look quite as crisp as the main feature. Maybe they used higher definition cameras in Furiosa than in Fury Road?
Also, I love watching actors having fun and Hemsworth was a blast.
Thanks for the comment! But you're the only person who's said the clips during the credits looked better....interesting. They certainly didn't. Most likely because Fury Road was shot on film and Furiosa was shot on digital (I'm guessing) -- but Fury Road looks much better. There was a different cinematographer - so that could be why they look different.

But we can respond other things more interesting, like if we see with attention, the mechanic arm of Furiosa came from a asian guy who was helping to build the war rig, its in the movie and director don't have to tell us, just show us, you know? I can answer most of the things he listed, but come on, it's just a hate for hate not even a critical with some substance. The guy who knows everything it's called History Man, again, it's on the screen, it's a metaphor or we can tell that is the History in person...I'm not a professional in movies or something but I really like to understand this art and maybe this helped me to follow some things, but there are other things that is just good will.
@@Elefanteazulll I got Marvel vibes from the story, Cris acting like he is evil Thor and the guy who knows everything.
The guy by Cris's side who does nothing but make crazy movements.
It's like the directors knew the movie was a joke and did not take it seriously.
Listen, I am all for movies that don't take themself seriosely.
However this movie tries so hard to be serious, yet so many scenes make me feel like it's a total joke.
Especially the baby Warboy.
If you think my questions are so stupid how about you answer the most important ones?:
- How did they wage a war for 20 years with very limited supplies. Wars irl last some years maybe or more with the world not being a wasteland but a highly functional one
- Why are the cars they have now way more advanced then in the future movie?
- Why do people walk around while they are burning like it's nothing?
- How did the truck keep a whole 30 or more people in the back? It's like they were all respawning.
- Why did the main character never talk and suddenly she is really good at english in the end, and why did they start speaking like it was a Sherlock Holmes scene?
- Why "Are you epic"? What does this mean?
- How does every important caracter survive after beeing in a pit with more then 50 or more Warboys with explosive spears look down on them?
You know what the biggest question of them all is?
- How do you like this movie?
It's all action, no character, from one setting to another, and the whole movie feels completely pointless.
For example the scene where the person gets killed by bikes pulling in every direction. That scene added so little to the story, almost nothing.
We already knew Cris was a bad guy, however how did he get that many followers, or why are people even following this guy? He seems like a total dumbass.
How about showing us his smart side? Does he have any way to keep his followers happy? Is he manipulating them in any way?
You know why Imortal Joe was believable? Because he had a cult of Warboys, he controlled the water, he had strong men at his side and the Warboys followed him like a god.
Btw, nobody ever explained what the people under the city even do. If they all are rotting and dying as shown in this movie, why even give them water in the fist place? They seriously have no purpose but to live and die it seems.
The CGI was bad. I was wondering if it could have been a quirky artistic choice. I don't get it. CGI was better in the mid 2000's
The star of Furiosa is Chris Hemsworth's Fake Nose. The only thing missing was the black rimmed glasses with the bushy eyebrows.
Finally, someone willing to admit how bad the cgi was. Took me right out of the movie.
It was awful..Fury road was great ..this was awful
Finally someone else saying it. It's so garish digitally and CGId it distracts me from really losing myself in the movie
Thanks for the comment! Stick around!
Fury road was terrible. Road warrior is goated
I liked Fury Road...eventually!
The movie sucked. CGI mess with terrible characters and a bad script.
I don't want to go that far myself, I thought it was okay - but it was let down by by wigs, CG and some ropey storytelling! Thanks for the comment :)
@@MarcusFlemmings Maybe i went too far with sucked. But it’s so Mediocre compared too fury road. All the points you made just proves that they got lazy and went for short cuts, hence the obsessive use of CGI. I think we both knew hen the first trailer came out that it was going to be a huge disappointment.
