BOEING 747 Packs off TAKEOFF. Max weight!! Closing the A/C packs increase engines power.

  • Air condition packs use to pressurize and control the temperature in the Airplane.
But ..the air flow for the packs comes from the engine compressors. taking this air from the engines, reducing max power available for takeoff.
On a very heavy TAKEOFF, when performances are limited,
A packs off takeoff might be needed
Must not forget to reopen packs after takeoff ...
Great takeoff and cockpit management by the F/O sh-ko

It was painted Grass Green and still had the spotlight mount on it. I bought it for $600. Everything worked incl A/C that I NEVER had to turn off..bc it had a 400 big block police interceptor motor. Well of course closing the AC Packs increases power - the AC Packs are powered off of Engine Bleed Air .. closing the Packs keeps that engine bleed air in the engine and increases the engines' available thrust .. every Jet Engine Mechanic on Planet Earth knows that - it's taught on the very first day of Jet Engine School ..

  • @igclapp

Hi Gal, thanks for the nice video as usual. On a heavy takeoff like that, do you have a way to check that the plane is accelerating properly on takeoff? For example, in the Falcon 20 manual it gives seconds until 100kts speed, so if you are taking more than this amount of time to reach 100kts, you know there is a problem. Take care & stay safe. -Ibrahim

So 74s do actual all packs off takeoffs? Isn't there a procedure were the APU becomes the air source to operate one pack? Up until Sept 1st, when I turned 65 and forced to retire by the FAA, I was a 777 Captain for United. I never needed to use the procedure in the 777 but had I needed it, the APU, not the engine would supply the air to run the right pack and the left pack would be off. A Packs "Off" takeoff, technically, only requires that the engines not be the pneumatic source to the packs. It does not mean the, or a, pack cannot be used so long as a non engine dependent pneumatic source is available, and there is, the APU. The United 777 manual refers to this procedure as the APU-TO-PACK TAKEOFF. In this configuration the right packs air source becomes the APU and the left pack is off. So, are you saying the 747 does not have a similar procedure? I'd find that hard to believe. The only Boeing I ever flew that didn't was the 727. All the others I flew, 737,757,767 and 777 have a APU-TO-PACK TAKEOFF procedure. I can't imagine the 747 does not.

    • @V1AbortV2

I flew the whale for a couple of years. When we were heavy, generally on a warmer day, we would do a “packs off” takeoff. The packs would then be turned back on after Accel height.

@@V1AbortV2 Ok, a Packs "Off" takeoff, technically, only requires that the engines not be the pneumatic source to the packs. It does not mean the, or a, pack cannot be used if a non engine dependent pneumatic source is available, and there is, the APU.

Could someone tell my why the captain AND the FO have both their hands on the yoke? Isn't it dangerous to have two pilots controlling at the same time the aircraft?
I think the captain is not really giving orders to the yoke but the fo should feel a certain resistance on his manoeuvres.

Throwing out a few of the passengers also increases takeoff performance, but whatever. I guess turning off the packs and opening all the windows works for you guys.

    No doubt about it.
These pilots, just like every other pilot, love their life to the fullest.
And I can understand them although I'm not a Boeing 747-400 pilot.
    Unfortunately.
I can imagine that the love for flying, especially in the Boeing 747-400, is as important as the love for a woman who you love to the max and
    unconditional.

Part of that is an optical illusion; that cockpit is a long ways off the ground. The other part is that they're trying to get 900,000 pounds airborne so acceleration was indeed a bit lame.
