- Kazakhstan is the world's largest landlocked country, located in Northern Central Asia. Originally it was inhabited by Iranic people like Huns and Scythians who followed Shamanism, and a few followed Zoroastrianism, Buddhism and Hinduism. During 5th century CE these Iranic people migrated westwards and were replaced by Turks who were predominately Tengrists. Some Christian (Eastern Church) and Buddhist Khaganates gave a boost to these religions and when Arabs captured South Kazakhstan Islam entered Kazakhstan. After the Mongol invasions of 13th century, the Mongol Khaganates made Islam the state religion and the Turkic Kazakhs became Muslims. The Black death caused many deaths in the region. The war with Buddhist Dzungar Khanate of Xinijang lead to decline in population of Kazakhstan. The Russians under the Russian Empire captured Kazakhstan in 1840s and many Russian Christians settled here making the region their majority. During Soviet rule many people became Atheists. The Dissolution of Soviet Union and formation of independent Kazakhstan in 1991 saw migration of many Russians to Russia, still many remained behind but have a low growth rate as compared to the Kazakhs.

The reason there was an increase on Christianity after 1920 was that new USSR govt was against any religion and they had strong controll over moscow and surrounding area
