Religion in Turkmenistan from 0 to 2023 AD

- Turkmenistan is a Turkic majority country located in Central Asia.
Originally it was an ethnically Iranian majority country (ethnically) and people followed religions like Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Animism there. Buddhism grew at a very fast rate here in those times because of Silk route and empires like Kushans. Because of Iranian influence many Zoroastrians also lived there.
Arab Caliphate captured this region (Transoxiana) between 673 and 751 AD and the region was Islamized. In 8th century Oghuz Turks from Mongolia, who were mostly Tengrists settled in the region in large numbers. Many Turkic tribes started dominating many regions. However in the 10th century many Turks starting from Seljuk tribe converted to Sunni Islam and established the Seljuk Empire. Many Turks settled in other territories of this empire like Azerbaijan and Anatolia and this migration lead to decline of population in Turkmenistan. In 1219 Mongols began their invasion of Khwarezmian Empire and this lead to a large genocide in the region. This was followed by Black Death which further wiped out a large proportion of the population of the region, starting from 1263 AD. During the later period of Chagatai Khanate almost all Turks and Mongols in the region accepted Islam. After that indigenous Turkmen Muslim kingdoms dominated the region. In 1879-1881 Turkmenistan fell in the hands of Russian Empire and then in the hands of USSR. Many Russians of whom were Christians migrated to the country. Turkmenistan received independence in 1991 and many Russians left the country. Today almost 93% Turkmenistanis are Muslims and 6.3% Christians and remaining others, mostly Atheists. Most Christians are Russians and minority Armenians.
