It’s kinda ironic that you said this arc has less punching considering the fact that it also has the most Dragonball-esque fight in the entire series lol
At least you were able to get it as a kid. I had no idea what was going on other than Yusuke getting finessed by Sensui lol but yeah this is the best arc with the best villain. Screw the Dark Tournament stans
Yusuke’s skirmish with Hiei wasn’t fan service, it was actually a huge character moment. I’m not trying to be a meme here, it really was. Yusuke had just gotten destroyed by Sensui in a straight up fight, there were no territory excuses to be had, Sensui straight up just whooped his ass. And as a result of that his best friend was kidnapped. Now after that Yusuke’s dealing with The Sniper and he genuinely has no idea what to do. His territory is picking him apart and he’s not focused because he has Kuwabara and his safety on his mind. Everything that can go wrong is going wrong and Yusuke’s panicking. Hiei’s appearance is what calms him, he sets his mind right and gives him the advice he needed to hear at that moment. It was an amazing moment for Hiei and his relationship with Yusuke.
In a way, Hiei cares about Yusuke, I have this feeling that the former knows something that Yusuke doesn't. Case in point is that he didn't kill Sniper, just knocked him out.
I have some mixed feelings about this arc. On one hand I love how it dove into how evil humans can be. With the whole demons getting tortured which end up having Sensui questioning his allegiances. On the other hand I didn't really like how Yoko Kurama and the Dragon of the Darkness Flame both got totally watered down. Yeah I get it that Sensui is suppose to be powerful but it didn't have to be a squash match. Yoko Kurama is a feared legendary bandit that should be close to Yomi's level. The same thing goes for the Dragon which is suppose to be a feared mythical creature in Demon World. I had no problem with Sensui beating them but the fight should have been much closer like Sensui AT LEAST getting some bruises and scratches from Yoko Kurama and a Dragon infused Hiei.
@mikemeansbizness Which they still could have used to their advantage. Kurama and Hei giving Kuwabara an opening for him to hit him would have been interesting. Kuwabara getting faster as well as stronger would have been great too
Kurama clarifies that he is not Yoko Kurama, and that he merely was taking on his demon appearance as a result of the demon world's influence. His power didn't change at all, nor did his personality.

Hey, I just wanted to say a few things about the fight between Hiei and Yusuke. I can understand that on the surface, it can feel like it was a pointless bout shoehorned in for fanservice, but I feel that it not only highlights Yusuke narrative of him rushing into danger without thinking, but also strengthens the dynamic he has with Hiei and highlights their similarities. Yusuke keeps getting put into worse and worse situations in this arc because he won't think before he acts, acting on impulse and emotion. This is a lesson that Genkai tries to teach him earlier. Hiei sees this, points this out, and tells him to calm down. Yusuke won't listen, so Hiei gets the point across in the way they both can understand. Since Hiei used to be much the same way earlier in the series, hearing the advice from him made it more valid. I also pretty much agree with your take that Hiei has conflictions about whether he wants to stay in the human world, or go back to Makai. Unlike Kurama who possessed a human body and lived life as a human for a good while, developing bonds and learning more about human emotions, Hiei is an outsider through and through and doesn't feel like he really belongs. Finding a place to belong is much a driving force for his whole personal narrative. The bonds his built with his friends ultimate drives his decision to aid them in stopping the opening of the barrier.

My all time favorite saga of YU YU HAKUSHO!! Sensui’s my favorite villain in the entire series. The darkest arc of the entire series and so many twists and turns.
I thought this arc was masterpiece and terrifying, it makes you look within yourself like if Sensui spit the right amount of game, I'd probably join him. He's an excellent manipulator which makes him scarier than any of the villains that were shown so far. He preys on the mentally vulnerable which makes him different than Rando or Toguro
I finished Somewhere Past Never's analysis of Chapter Black and I have to agree with him Yusuke's death would've had more of an impact if he stayed dead and the power boost his friends got allowed Kuwabara to beat Sensui and become the next Spirit Dectective. He still was okay with what ended up happening, but I agree. My gripe with it is it started becoming like DBZ where only the Goku could beat the main villain even though Kuwabara, Hiei, and Kurama all have abilities that could at least weaken Sensui so if Yusuke came back, it wouldn't be such a ridiclous powercreep when he came back. I do like the parallels between the angelic Sensui and the demonic Yusuke though as well as Sensui's speech about demonizing a human and humanizing a demon. I also agree it is a bummer Sensui's mutiple personalities weren't explored more.
I too would've been impressed if Togashi went through with the consequence's and allowed Yusuke to permanently die. But personally i dont think that Kurama, and especially Hiei and Kuwabara were the right fit to defeat Sensui, since there was a stronger parallel and conflict between the two former spirit detectives to be explored. But the conclusion wasn't really great either way.
@@The_Ciple I think Togashi was already thinking of killing one of the characters but the editors didn't like the idea, also they pushed for more power ups since they were competing with DBZ back then.
You said something about the whole Urameshi being a hybrid build up not making sense or coming out of nowhere if I'm not mistaken..if you go back and rewatch the series you'll notice times where his spirit energy which often is depicted as blue, would be red once in a while. Demon energy is mostly shown to be red in the series. I believe he planned that from the beginning of the series. Just a thought.
This is my favorite arc. Sensui is probably the best villian in YYH. And I definitely feel like he was the inspriration for Geto from JJK. Amongst some other newer generation villians.
@@Cas-ed9ob in this day and age I couldn't tell if the hate was for sensui or geto from jjk But I made the mistake on another platform saying that JJK takes heavily from yyh, kekaishi and bleach. Did not get a nice response lmao
@@criszizI mean gege has specifically named those series as HEAVY inspiration for jjk so no matter what anyone says bleach and yyh are the forefathers of jjk
This was definitely my favorite arc, not only because of how heavy it is or the themes it deals with, but because it allows us to observe thanks to the "territories" what Togashi was cooking and that would later become Nen.
Just a slight correction. The guy in the video says that either yusuke’s team will die, or game master will die. That wasn’t the choice. Because they have to follow the rules of the game when they lose, they just start over, like a regular video game, but when you defeat the goblin king, he dies in the video game, which is why the kid would die since he took the position of the goblin king. The idea was to stale mate them long enough for him to get the portal nearly open, until someone finally defeats the kid. They could have been stuck there for 100’s of years, or as kurama ensured, just the one go round. The only real choice was to kill the kid. It was only a matter of time. Thats why game master was his pawn.
Chapter Black was my favorite arc since I was a kid. I couldn't quite grasp it why then, but now I get it. It's much more psychological and character driven than the Dark Tournament. I cannot help seeing the Black Chapter in JJK. Expansion Domains are Territories. Getou is basically Sensui. Gege is a fan of Togashi so its not that surprising.
Chapter Black is the first Arc I saw back when it was on toonami. (didn’t have cable until late in my childhood) I get why people like the dark tournament the best, but chapter black has a soft spot and most nostalgia for me.
Chapter black was hands down the best arc only truly started appreciating it as I grew up but yeah dark tournament was great when I was younger for sure but yeah this one is def my favorite
I know that as far as having any impact, Koenma really didn't do much at all, but I like the added characterization in relation to Sensui. I think that it put early things in a different perspective, even if they probably were just happenstance. Like doing the test of character that went from something were Yusuke was looking for good deeds for his egg to having to act even if it could not be for his benefits. And well having a showing of both good and evil in humans and yokai very early on. Plus the small gesture of checking Yusuke when he hit a lower point after losing Genkai. Like I say, as far as the story is concerned it doesn't make a dent, but it brings an extra for rewatch.... it would be great if we had the reveal of Enma being a POS back then, like in the manga, but hey years later they more or less adapted it.
Fun fact: The Chapter Black (Or Sensui arc) directly inspired Bleach's Fullbring arc. Which was a MASSIVE breath of fresh air after the entire thing with Aizen.
Yes, I think so too 😆 I see Getou as a failed version of Sensui. Mostly because I like Sensui better. For example Sensui is constantly in the background (like in the Amanuna fight) and Getou is just not. We get the flashback arc and JJK 0 but the flashback arc feels kinda empty for me. It's because we don't really see Getou as the cult leader that he is.
I just finished reading the manga for the first time in so long and the chapter black arch is really awesome. I thought it was weird they let the doctor not only live, but get away and have redemption. Out of all of the henchmen of sensui he deserved redemption the least
Need the 3 kings Arc! Interested to see how u would rewrite it cause i feel that arc had the most potential. Literally had all the makings to be the best but Togashi was just so stressed out and wanted to finish asap
@@The_CipleThe one thing that shocked me during the Sensui/Three Kings Arc was the fact that Yusuke was a Descendant of Raizen, but they didn't expand on it though.
This arc is so fucking good but its so Seinen. 😂 Adults should be watching it. Togashi is fresh this arc was extremely intellectually stimulating with unique moral dilemnas and emotional quandries.
One of the best arcs in all of anime so different from all of the show what a gem and i had no idea because this part of the anime only aired at 4am i fought so hard to stay up i probably seen 3 episodes and bought a couple of vhs thank god to streaming
I always liked Chapter Black because in a lot of ways it was a fusion of the action of The Dark Tournament and the actual detective work/soul-searching from the beginning of the series before it turned into a fighting series.
I would argue that demons being "only" evil is only a Christian/Muslim concept, because demons (regardless of what culture, religion, mythology and folklore) are generally chaotic neutral beings, but are mostly dangers/harmful/evil towards humans So while they're many ways to say "demon/devils" in Japanese, yokai is a more common and generally used term for such creatures
It's actually wild how much better the YYH anime can be at times, its not a perfect adaptation but I like almost all of their expansions. Case in point Game Master, I didn't realize how brief the first three games are, almost to make them seem pointless light set up for the dark twist. The anime kind of immerses you in the lighthearted tone by having them go into the video game. I love having Genkai in this arc actually just because it showcases how versatile she can be, you forget she loved video games in her initial arc so its a fun pay off seeing her in the helicopter game. Yusuke being just good at the fighting game is a nice touch too even though I like the manga having Yanagisawa able to tap into gaming knowledge by shapeshifting.
Having never watched JoJo I could do without Yuyu being compared to it so frequently. But I do understand and appreciate u pointing out the differences since the one guy created both.
So I watched Yuyu as a kid, but never finished it. I remember watching it all the way through for the first time last year actually and while I LOVED the Dark Tournament, I couldn't help but love Chapter Black more. My gf still loves DT more. But now I'm gonna watch this video and listen to someone else tell me why my favorite arc was the best :V
The only positive of Yusuke being revived as a demon that I could see is that he unintentionally became like Toguro. He won the dark tournament and (eventually) became a demon of the highest class
I literally just saw the Sniper episode in the office pantry the other day lol. Weird that I'm seeing a lot of YYH again these days, I didn't even search for it.
The territories definitely reminds me of the Stands from.Jojo but the entire theme of Chapter Black reminds of Devilman especially with its take on humanity.
I guess I’m in the minority that loved the mazoku transformation. I can totally understand why people don’t like it and nowadays I definitely see it as an @$$pull but when I first watched all the way through I felt so hyped. I love the concept but don’t really like the execution. Sensui being bodied by raizen instead of yusuke defeating him fair with his new demon powers, really sucks as an ending to such a great arc. Sensui deserved a better end because he could’ve been the most compelling anime villain of all time. Because of his frustration with being a mangaka and his health conditions, Togashi started to make bad decisions with the story around this time. Togashi had brilliant concepts for the story, territories, a traumatized villain with multiple personalities, the three kings of the demon world, spirit world trying to kill yusuke, and also some of the old characters coming back. I actually think yusuke being half demon is also brilliant, it explains some stuff about his personality and why he’s so strong for a non-psychic human but I really wish there was some foreshadowing of it throughout the series. I also love the idea of the three kings arc, I just hate that it was rushed and wasn’t finished. The three kings arc had potential to be the best yu yu hakusho arc and yomi had potential to be the best villain. I love this show as it is and I’m glad we got hunter x hunter but because I love this series so much I would’ve rather we got a proper ending for this show, the way Togashi wanted it to end. He’s too damn prideful as a mangaka to hire somebody to finish it for him and now we get the same sorta thing with hunter x hunter. That’s his biggest flaw and it’s a damn shame because he is capable of writing the most perfect stories. There are some very devoted fans who are manga artists that would love to take up the task of doing the art for his series.
very well done subbed I have my own channel ( in a different niche dont worry) I hope ur channel goes far friend, I look forward to the final chapter. Also i've seen all of yu yu twice over you've inspired me to re watch these specific arks on my own maybe its nostalgia what matters is a life without pain is a life without joy without fun!!
I disagree that Yusuke's parentage is never foreshadowed. There are little clues that his ancestry is not necessarily normal going clear back to the beginning of the tournament if not the first interaction with the Black Black Club or before. In the anime, there are numerous times that a villain will imply directly to Yusuke that he is more than he appears. I am not finished with the arc yet, but I am looking forward to his revival. I do agree that the psychics were underutilized, but they would have been hard to use in an additional fashion. The only two that would have actually been more useful in direct combat would have been the Shadow Controller and Seaman as both of their powers could possibly be used for both offense and defense. The other two would likely have been devoured by Gormet/Elder Toguro. I did enjoy the end of Elder Toguro. Of all the villains, he was perhaps the least sympathetic, and to see his demise from within his own perspective was an excellent addition. The scene also allows Kurama to balance the scales in his own mind by eliminating both Gormet and Elder Toguro from the contest, both of who are vile men after having been forced to coldly murder a child after he mentally and emotionally destroyed him. My single largest problem comes from the violation of the rule that power upgrades should by shown not merely told. For instance, we seek Kuwabara's increase, but Kurama and Hiei only have issues at the barrier with no comparable feats to show new powers, at least, not that I have seen.
When I was a child, I hated the chapter black arc. There was less punching lol. I watched it again with my daughter. I agree chapter black was hands down the best Arc in the series. She didn’t like it, less punching.

This is my favorite arc. Sensui is probably the best villian in YYH. And I definitely feel like he was the inspriration for Geto from JJK. Amongst some other newer generation villians.
stop glazing 😂
@@malldropemoff ???
Glaze away, Sensui was great. Homeboy just player hatin
@@Cas-ed9ob in this day and age I couldn't tell if the hate was for sensui or geto from jjk
But I made the mistake on another platform saying that JJK takes heavily from yyh, kekaishi and bleach.
Chapter black has been my favorite YYH arc since I first saw the show at 15. Sensui just captivated me with his ideals and…interesting personality.
Sensui is a very psychological villain and that's why he's a great antagonist.
such a great video thank you bro
Keep it alive !!!! we need the remaster for sure!
This arc was so mysterious and really dope
the arc is basically the chimera ants arc of hunter x hunter it focused more on their emotional and mental point of view
Really good video! You're super underrated. Subbed!
I think the ending is more about him finally getting a chance to finish the manga. He's happy to have a chance to finish it.
Chapter Black is truly the masterpiece arc of YYH
Chapter Black was my favorite arc since I was a kid. I couldn't quite grasp it why then, but now I get it. It's much more psychological and character driven than the Dark Tournament.
I cannot help seeing the Black Chapter in JJK. Expansion Domains are Territories. Getou is basically Sensui. Gege is a fan of Togashi so its not that surprising.
It feels good to know others loved this arc as much as I did.
I really liked itsuki, the fact sensui kept him alive so they e could watch a tv show together will always be funny to me.
I wish Chapter Black got talked about more. This Arc is what cemented Yu Yu as my favorite anime
We wouldn’t have Hunter x Hunter, especially its latest chapters, without Chapter Black.
Well done video.
Damn this one did really well
Congrats, thanks for the great vids
Fun fact: The Chapter Black (Or Sensui arc) directly inspired Bleach's Fullbring arc.
Which was a MASSIVE breath of fresh air after the entire thing with Aizen.
Just discovered your channel! I subscribed! Keep up the amazing content.
Yusuke randomly going SS3 was the best moment of any anime ever
This was my fav arc . It’s so deep and it’s so psychological. Also sensui is basically Cyrus with Pokémon
The fact that a lot of people consider this arc to be better than the dark tournament arc, really speaks volumes about how incredible yyh is.
It's funny how time makes a thing look differently. Chapter Black was Jujustu Kaizen before Jujutsu Kaizen.
Jujutsu Kaisen is a really huge ripoff of Yu Yu Hakusho sprinkled in with some Bleach and Naruto
Working on the script currently. Hopefully i can get it out by next week
@@The_CipleThe one thing that shocked me during the Sensui/Three Kings Arc was the fact that Yusuke was a Descendant of Raizen, but they didn't expand on it though.
I loved this part of the series my absolute favorite chapter black was amazing
I would argue that demons being "only" evil is only a Christian/Muslim concept, because demons (regardless of what culture, religion, mythology and folklore) are generally chaotic neutral beings, but are mostly dangers/harmful/evil towards humans
So while they're many ways to say "demon/devils" in Japanese, yokai is a more common and generally used term for such creatures
In this universe, demons are another race of humanoid basically.
Demon is just a translation for youkai, it's not even close to being a direct translation.
Chapter Black was my personal favorite arc in the series too.
Idgaf What No One Says The " Dark Tournament " Arc Is By Far And Not Even Close The Best Arc Of This Show And To Be Honest Its Really Not A Debate 💯
Chapter Black always been my favorite arc.
Didn't watch this arc until i was in my 20's and was blown away that I liked it way more than dark Tournament but no one mentions it,
Dark Tournament 9/10
Chapter Black 9-5/10
Chapter Black is so goat
Awesome channel mybdude
This arc is so good if the live action adaption is good I’d love to see how this would be like in a live action space
Bro when has live action anything been good? Cmon now use your head

The best Arc of the series
The only positive of Yusuke being revived as a demon that I could see is that he unintentionally became like Toguro. He won the dark tournament and (eventually) became a demon of the highest class
This is where domain expansion came from
Damm how much foreshadowing did sun gof Nika power up need to not be an asspull?
th-cam.com/users/shortsWkazzGga6Lw?si=ITiAgpht4Apnhhr5
The whole thing with Yusuke getting kidnapped by Kido, Yanagisawa and Kaito was a ruse by Genkai to test Hiei, Kurama, Kuwabara and Botan.
Holy SHIT!!! I just realized Captain Tosen from Bleach and the Demons in JJK are all derived fro the same concept!!!
I literally just saw the Sniper episode in the office pantry the other day lol. Weird that I'm seeing a lot of YYH again these days, I didn't even search for it.
IMHO the BEST Arc for me in the previous one the Dark Tournament one.
Ngl I think Sensui’s Armor is kinda badass it’s like an RPG character changing armor mid fight or using buffs.
Best arc in anime.
Damn in all of anime? Sheesh, I might have to rewatch it, but I thought togashi leveled up his writing and arc structure with HXH though.
@@bringinthedope5929 I also really enjoy chimera ant arc, if I was ranking I have chapter black best chimera ants second best.
The territories definitely reminds me of the Stands from.Jojo but the entire theme of Chapter Black reminds of Devilman especially with its take on humanity.
Chapter black was good until the last couple eps
Rewatching it now but I'll probably still agree after refreshing my memory
Yeah I didn't like the Yusuke Demon thing. Very out of left field
Naah it was perfect
Its my personal favorite arc and I feel like its not that common of a feeling given some of the other amazing arcs
Love the doctor
22:57 there are at least 2 references in the earlier story to Yusuke having a questionable lineage.
Yuyu Hakusho is one of the best Manga/Anime ever. Sensui is one of the best villains ever.
very well done subbed I have my own channel ( in a different niche dont worry) I hope ur channel goes far friend, I look forward to the final chapter. Also i've seen all of yu yu twice over you've inspired me to re watch these specific arks on my own maybe its nostalgia what matters is a life without pain is a life without joy without fun!!
Thanks for the sub!
Y’all ever notice how much the bleach bount filler arc directly ripped from the chapter black arc?
Chapter Black Arc laid the foundation for nen in HXH, you can really see it here
I disagree that Yusuke's parentage is never foreshadowed.
