I've been psyching myself out for *months* trying to get back in the creative groove. I couldn't even doodle. I've been swatching for the last few days and thanks to you, today I have a painting in an old sketchbook that I'm determined to use up. It looks like hell, but not nearly as bad as I expected it to. I'm going to keep going with the daily challenge/tutorials. Thank you for making these lessons available and brief (much less daunting to me personally). I already bought your book, too.
I appreciate your telling us WHY you are using certain strokes. It's information that will be valuable when I begin painting a seascape on my own. Thank you.
I love how you champion us- I came from Skillshare and I follow you on socials. I love how you champion us when we are not our 100% self. Whenever I am having a mental health check-in, an imposter syndrome moment… I go to your socials and do your mini tutorials. But equally, I find a pure meditative joy in your 10 workshops. What is art if not an imitation of life… a metaphor for it. I’ve learnt not to judge my art if I feel my art didn’t as well as planned…likewise I’ve learnt not to be too hard on my self… if things I planned didn’t end the way I thought they would. Thank you for sharing your art, an insight into your beautiful soul and thank you for telling us nay showing us to celebrate it all 🫶🏻
I have just discovered you and your tutorial! I am blown away by your mindset. I love watercolour but I particularly love your approach to it and how we need to be kind to ourselves and just enjoy the process. Bless you and thank you.
Thank you so much for this challenge and for this first "daring" tutorial. I'm starting again watercolor painting after a pause of some months. And yes it looked / looks (?) messy, but I needed that "daring" part. As a recovering "perfectionist" I love the beautiful imperfection of watercoulour painting. Thank you for encoruaging us!
new challenge from your hand... I am really motivated and with enough enthusiasm and energy to face each challenge that you are going to propose to us !!
I am a very anxious person and don't always handle chaos well. I really love the reminders that it's okay to not know what is going on. It helped me let go and just paint ♡
Thank you! I do enjoy your lessons. Even when it feels stressful your calming voice reminds me to just breathe . I’m learning so many skills. Now I just have to remind myself not to go in with expectations that I’m creating a masterpiece. That I’m having fun , learning and adding to my creative toolbox.
Hi Thank you for your tutorial on painting watercolour waves and sunsets. You definitely touched on all the roller coaster emotions I experience when I am painting. And you are right about not being so precious about perfection and you just let go and enjoy the journey…amazing things happen. I have just started to play and paint with watercolour and really love the freedom of the medium. 😊🙏🏼🇦🇺🦘
You are an excellent teacher Kolbie and With your help, I am confident I can do this. I will be buying your books! Thank you for such a wonderful gift. I am so very grateful and happy!!
Courage! Yes, it will take courage to do this but I am inspired by you and your teaching techniques and I trust that I will make messy waves and I WILL LOVE IT! Thank you!
I love your whole learning and imperfect approach to art. It’s a practice for how we need to live life. A good life is like good art - a messy process!
Hi Kolbie, I am loving your challenges. We are on day 4 and I’m still working on day 1 seascape! But I’m ok with that! Thanks for sharing your art and your love of art!
I have never done this type of painting, so I’m looking forward to trying it. I appreciate your helpful instruction with the emphasis on the ‘messy’ phase it will go through along the way!
Thank you so much for creating this awesome challenge! I love that you remind your viewers of the actual time you spent on each segment. It cues me to pause the video and work more intentionally. 🤩
I like your way very much. It is not only a learning or challenge video, but also very valuable psychologically. Not only do you say that a beginner's painting won't look like yours, but you really make it feel totally ok. I am much less self-critical with your videos, thank you very much for that.
I. Can’t. WAIT to get home and try this!! I am SO thrilled I found out about this free course of tutorials! I have your Landscape Book and just ordered the seascape book but I plan to do this whole course and then after getting a better familiarity with your style (which I just love) I will do the books next :-) You are a phenomenal teacher and everything you said made complete sense and you eliminated all fear Of making mistakes on my “precious cotton paper” and that is EVERYRHING !!
Hello my friend! You’ve won my giveaway! (YAYYYYYY) To claim your prize, please email kolbie@thiswritingdesk.com with your mailing address and your choice of book (wilderness or seascapes). Thank you!!
This is fantastic. I have been painting two years and still suck at water. Looking forward to learning and improving. Thank you so much for sharing your gifts! Watched the whole video and will paint it tomorrow!
I really enjoyed your tutorials. I have a difficult time getting out of my own mind and learning to just enjoy the process. You made this process so enjoyable and I loved listening to your positive encouragement
Can’t wait to try this. Living in a tropical area with a multitude of beaches near us … and it’s pouring down with rain today … the inspiration for my work has always been these beaches. Trying a different medium to do this is so exciting. 😊
I live not too far from the mediterranean sea and this painting just makes me think of those late evenings walking on the beach watching the sunset, next step will be to take pictures and then try to paint them :)
very exciting Day One. Yes, it looks intimidating, but I guess I'll give it a good try and jump in with both feet and eyes open wide. Wonderful lesson and you certainly made me feel more at ease as you went along. Great encouragement.🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
Thank you for a great lesson. Your paining is light and carefree. Mine, not so much! I am going to have to do this one again. The dark got away from me and I lost more of the light than I wanted. Can't wait for day 2!
I’m going to start right now! I fractured my wrist last week and I can do any of my usual crafts like sewing or knitting so I’m going to dive into painting. I’ve been meaning to relearn how to paint for so long but I always hesitate. No excuses now! I’m going squirrelly not being able to create.
First, you are my HERO! Pretty sure I heard a screaming child in the background but you Kept. On. Going. Second, I love my result SO much. Who knew those little vertical lines of white would add that sparkle! ❤
Well this was challenging but so fun. I took a step back and reflected and stopped myself before I went too far. I'm very relaxed and pleased with the results. Thank you Kolbie.
Grateful for this seascape challenges you initiated and that mindset of exploration and enjoyment- how can you even think of failing? Enjoying the process is more important!
Thank you! I just did day one in a little watercolor sketchbook I bought forever ago. I definitely could work slower than I did 😂 I learned a lot though for next time. Thanks for the encouraging words at the end!
Have been waiting for this. Was doubting myself, whether I signed up or not. So beautiful with only 4 colors. Hopefully this challenge w I’ll bring back my will to paint again
There is a chance I have been stalking and refreshing TH-cam all day for this 😍
me too! and i am supposed to be selling my home, i sneak back between viewers to check youtube!! :D
P.s its sold so im catching up!
Painted this three times. Each time yielded different results and different things I loved but I learned from each “journey “.

Your classes are so fun. It brought my creativity back to life. Thank you.
Thanks for breaking this down and making it feel approachable!

Wow. The last part where you write the things is the best.
Love the impression of depth in the ocean-a great first challenge!

Oh I can't wait to get to my paints and try this. The ocean always makes me think of my mom who loved the beach.

Taking a deep breath and gathering courage to start!

Yes I loooove the way the sparkles show in this, and the tiny wave details!
I am so scared and so excited to start it. I like the " exercising the courage" bit of advice. I will need it!!!

The ugly stage was strong with this one! Phew. Glad I pushed through - my white gouache didn't turn out very well but I've loved the process today.
It was a lot of fun painting this!
Have been waiting for this. Was doubting myself, whether I signed up or not. So beautiful with only 4 colors. Hopefully this challenge w I’ll bring back my will to paint again
