      I watched MTM on Nick @ Nite growing up. It was a fun show to watch. Kind of the "Friends" of that era. I have seen a few episodes of her black & white show with DVD. That show mostly focused on DVD. Plus I struggled with watching a woman act as tho she was completely fulfilled being a housewife.

    The world is a less better place without Mary Tyler Moore in it. Before I started working in the entertainment industry, I worked at the Waldorf-Astoria where she had an apartment. I was just a young thing back then and I saved up to send her a lot of pink roses on the occasion of her Oscar nomination for Ordinary People. A lot of pink roses. I came into work the next day, she'd left me a little letter. I still have it today. I cherish that letter and the memories I have of her at the Waldorf. She was our favorite guest. She was everything you hoped she'd be in real life and much more. She was gracious. She was kind and she was a woman of magnitude.

    She was amazing. I loved her on MTM. Her performance in Ordinary People was the most powerful for me. Her performance helped me understand my own mother, who had lost a teenage son while I was a small child. The stoicism and desperate need to keep up appearances, or risk everything coming undone. Coming across as coldly indifferent. I got it.

      All brilliant actors in Ordinary People, however, if Mary Tyler Moore hadn’t played the role of Beth Jarret Ordinary People wouldn’t have been so critically acclaimed. Mary Tyler Moore carried the film. The audience was shocked as were critics. Keep in mind, MTM never sold her soul to the “institution” which is why she didn’t receive it. No political favors from Mary which took the award from her. As always, though, she left with her integrity intact.

    To have either one of her iconic roles would be a boon for any performer. That she created two such likable, funny, flawed (for the times) roles is a testament to her talent and the changing landscape of television and society from the 60s to the 70s. I always loved Mary.

    I had the pleasure of working with Miss Moore in 1965 when I was 19 years old. It was on a "Danny Thomas Special." I was the winner of a teen talent contest sponsored by Danny Thomas and KFWB RADIO in Los Angeles. She was so nice to me during the rehearsals for the show asking what my goals were and what I wanted to do. She was about 28 at that time, and I had a huge crush on her and thought she was so talented. About 4 or 5 years later, I ran into her while she was filming outside scenes of her new show, "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," at the Century City Mall. She recognized me and called me over to talk with her. She asked how I was and how my career was going. I couldn't believe how sweet she was. I will always have a special place in my heart for her. She really did turn on the world with her smile. My name is Guy Apollo .

      @@gorey4more837 Beth was more materialistic than maternal. This type of theme was oft repeated in filmmaking during the latter half of the 20th century. The Graduate, Ordinary People, The Ice Storm, and American Beauty come to mind as movies that deal with upper middle class angst and the battle between financial success and emotional well being. Mary could have played Mrs. Robinson. After all, she had the legs. lol

I even thought of moving to Minneapolis to feel closer to them which is crazy because it was all filmed here in LA near where I live. Whaat Carl Reiner saw in MTM shows he was an entertainment genius. I was in my early 20s during the height of MTM TV. It seemed so fresh and innovative and real compared to my prior years watching Green Acres, Gilligan's Island, Bewitched or other shows from that era. Don't get me wrong I still adore those shows but this was something new and vibrant. Earlier I think TV execs sensed Americas were bored with those cliches and tried The Munsters and The Addams Family or Star Trek and Mission Impossible but they really struck a chord with MTM. Let's not forget All In The Family which really shook it up.

    • @robertriteman3227
      @robertriteman3227 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do think that Green Acres was a cut above those other sitcoms you mentioned. Every time I see James Cromwell I see Stretch Cunningham and think of the Archie's shock when Stretch passed and then Archie learned that Stretch was Jewish. Cromwell is great when he shows up on Succession. The history of TV and Film would be signficantly dimnished if the contributions of Norman Lear, Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner were removed .

      @knitterscheidt ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robertriteman3227 I enjoyed Schitt's Creek and was glad to see all those Emmy awards but couldn't help thinking it was kind of Green Acres 2.0, modern situations and story lines but built on the same premise, wealthy family moves to Nowheresville, down to all the quirky townies, flustered husband and coping spouse. Was Stevie a Hank Kimball, or was Roland Schitt a Mr. Haney, or Twyla Sands actually Ed Dawson? Or all just composites of those great characters? And Archie gave such a touching though funny eulogy.

    I loved mtm show and the Saturday night lineup. But for all the gushy admiration of the independent feminist woman, the true feminist of Saturday night tv was Suzanne Pleshette on Bob Newhart. Emily was a full person of integrity and intelligence. Her marital status would never define her. She didn't have to prove anything to Betty Friedan. That character was more role model than Mary Richards or MTM's sad life of proving over and over things Suzanne Pleshette comfortably embodied.

    She wasn't the modern, angry, joyless, man-hating feminist IF she was a feminist.
