This unused footage would most likely have been discarded, but somehow these loops were saved. I cannot stress how much what should've been in a landfill has taken me magically back to 1973. Just the mundane ordinary of the era has reignited so many cherished memories of a time gone forever. Watching the scenes is a time machine & at once transported me back to the 4th grade in my parent's living room. Thanks for posting.

I get that same feeling with so many TH-cam segments showing slices of real life from particular times. And 1973 is a favorite for me to return to. I was in the 9th grade in the spring of that year. The MTM Show was superb, and so relatable to my family. My older sister looked and sounded so much like Mary, and would soon go off into such a similar world of professions, offices and make friends like Rhoda.

As I have so often said to friends, you had to have a REALLY good reason to go out on a Saturday night when such quality television was on......
MTM was and remains my favorite TV comedy show of all time! Mary was the epitome of class style beauty and comedic timing we as a nation have ever witnessed!
      Amazing human being!!
Of course excellent writing helped propel this comedy show to the anals of history forever sealing its fate as the best comedy show of all time!

As a child I thought her character was one of the coolest things on TV. I especially loved her apartment with the sunken living room and the huge windows looking out and I fantasized about living in one just like that when I grew up. What a lovely lady and gifted actress.

Yes, loved her apartment! Though if you see the house in the opening credits (later opening from a different year), which this apartment is supposedly in, it's incongruous. The apartment is very modern. But the house is a Victorian.

Watching this is like a magic wand being waved around my brain. Even though this was shot in Minneapolis it may have swell have been in Chicago or any other City the scenery is pretty much Midwestern Americana Circa 1970. I was a young boy at this time and just watching them walk down the street past Burger King and all the different shops and all the cars and the way people were dressed immediately puts me back in my childhood because I really was there in a sense because those are shared memories with so many people who were around back then but sadly most of them are all gone now I am pushing 60 so I'm lucky to still have a few of them around but everything is different now and I remember when I was a kid older people telling me how different things were then in 1970 so now everything has come full circle now I am that older person telling younger people that same thing.. I don't know why but it makes my heart happy with sadness, maybe because everything just flew by so fast but I always had a great feeling back then because I had a great mother and that helped enormously and is probably why I miss being there so much and now they are all gone, so I wish I could just jump into this film and stay there forever and find everybody I knew and tell them how much I love them.

There was a local once a week half hour news show on WCCO TV I think called Moore On Sunday which was on hand to record this. The reason why they came to Minneapolis to film this was that the people behind the show felt that the way Mary Tyler Moore looked and dressed in 1970 and the way she looked and dressed in 1973 had changed dramatically so they decided to update the opening credits. Still one of the best filmed opening credit sequence of any show.

Do you know how wonderful this is? To have the footage that was used to make that unforgettable original opening for The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Watching it and to see the interactions between co stars and crew is gold. That first season opening with the song and the 70's iconography makes me nostalgic especially when she's washing that cool car. She's a beloved icon ❤
Yes Valerie Harper and Cloris Leachman and too many to mention from this great show.

Love the look back and realizing how the opening of MTM changed from 1970 to 1973. Loved the 1973 streets and older 1960s and 1970s cars. Also how old the old restaurants such as the Burger King looked and have changed. I am 58 and remember this era through the eyes of a kid. Always loved Mary and Rhoda and still do! Thanks! :)!

This is astonishing. It looks like they are filming the short montage scenes of the later opening credits, Mary in the supermarket throwing beef into her cart, her walking along the lake and turning back to watch joggers. This is incredibly rare and amazing and thanks so much for sharing this!

This video is a joy. Mary is so beautiful--inside and out--you can just tell. And it really seems that her friendship with Valerie mirrored Mary & Rhoda's friendship. (And those gorgeous big cars, not like the indistinguishable jellybeans today).

It all seems so casual and of the moment - as if it happened just a few days ago, but this footage was created fifty years ago, and Ms. Tyler Moore has been dead six years now. It all feels very strange probably because Mary Tyler Moore still seems like our contemporary.

In the 1970’s my sister and I were young grammar school kids, my father worked nights and my mother set a specific bedtime every school night. When the intro to her programs started, that meant it was bedtime and was a depressing feeling 😂😂. Even today when I hear the intro song, I recall those nights , except now I embrace bedtime 😊

OMG.......I LOVE this! The MTM Show has forever been my FAVORITE TV show of all time, TIED #1 with the inimitable DVD Show!!!! All this footage should have been shown in the Documentary, "Being Mary Tyler Moore". Or, create a Part 2, using all this footage. I can tell every scene in the opening credits from what she is wearing in these various outakes.
It was the greatest show on Earth, for all time, and brings back wonderful memories as well. Thank you for finding and posting this glorious footage. Please create a second documentary using ALL this footage.

This footage is absolutely fantastic! I find the behind the scenes footage to be fascinating. It’s almost like you were actually there on scene some fifty years ago (yikes!). I took a picture alongside the Mary Tyler Moore statue in downtown Minneapolis last year while visiting family in Plymouth. I’m a huge Mary Tyler Moore fan. Big thumbs up, make that two, for this upload.
