I love the idea of Hermes coming to the Underworld to sing the song, like, he's the one who bursts open the doors so the rest of Hadestown can join in, because he's the god of messengers, and he's come to deliver a message.

This is such an amazing interpretation of this song! I love the designs of all the characters and the transition from the guitar to the hammer was beautiful! Yeah, I prefer the original to the broadway version in many ways. It doesn't help that Broadway Hermes just doesn't sound right compared to this version.
So I’m new to this show and I have questions: Why is Persephone and Hades’ relationship faltering? What is Hermès role and what’s the symbolism behind him being on top of the cage? What does this song say about Hades? Why does Persephone want Orpheus and Eurydice to be together? The lyrics say that Hades is afraid to lose what he owns buts it’s already gone...what does that mean? Persephone is right there...
Persephone's relationship is faltering as it is not how their love use to be, Hermes is a storyteller, as he is also the person that helps souls, or in this case, Persephone goes to the underworld to Hadestown Hades is not like he uses to be, as he age, he became stiff and all about his business and controlling the souls of the underworld. The song is Orpheus last chance to prove his love is strong and sings so that Hades remembers how he loves Persephone in the past Persephone hangs out and likes to listen to Orpheus when she is up top and knows that young man had something special in his songs, as well the love between the two reminds her of Hade's relationship before. Persephone though she is standing next to him she is miles away. If you listen to Hadestown album you would understand by the songs Peresophene sings.
It's all kind of *in* this song. Like...it's all-but explicit of the specific mechanism by which Hades has all-but lost his wife. It's basically the same reason many real relationships fail; he feels insecure and jealous when she's away from him, so he tries to hold on to her harder, which serves to drive her away, and this particular feedback loop has been repeating for gods-know how long. Hermes' role is the narrator; he's the one telling this story - it's a tragedy, but he tells it anyway, because just being able to hope that *this* time things will be different is a valuable enough thing to put into the world. At the same time, he's a mentor figure to Orpheus. The song says a lot about hades; typically, it says so explicitly.
In the play I saw... the hades I saw had this incredible presences of some powerful dictator of life and death. He made you feel like he was the greatest leader who ever lived and that only though his vision could we move forward... And then at the end of this song... as he finaly comes in. That deep booming voice gives into a wimpwr..whimper.. as his voice cracks. He's a young man again, scared and nervous in front of thr most radiant thing that ever lived. And he can't even find the right words to win her over... so he sings the melody, in the way a child would. It was incredible acting on his part.. and honestly brought tears to my eyes.
I love the idea of Hermes coming to the Underworld to sing the song, like, he's the one who bursts open the doors so the rest of Hadestown can join in, because he's the god of messengers, and he's come to deliver a message.
Well... Orpheus was family.
And one of Hermes Jobs is it to bring souls to the Underworld, so he probably knows where the Delivery Entrance is
