One thing I really like about this song is about how it embraces the cultural context of the story it's adapting. Poseiden's rage at them not killing his son wouldn't make much sense to modern person in our culture, but from the perspective of an honor based culture like Ancient Greece, it makes total sense. In most ancient cultures, they took the adage of "dying honorably is better than living dishonorably" very seriously. In these cultures, sparing someone's life after a battle wasn't seen as an act of mercy, but an insult as you are denying them an honorable death and forcing them to live under the sting of defeat. For Oddysseus to not only deny Polythemus an honorable death of getting killed in battle against a clever enemy, but to also force him to live blind and knowing exactly how Oddysseus tricked him, yeah, an ancient person wouldn't consider that mercy, but one of the grossest and cruelest ways you could insult someone.

I agree plus this song pays attention of the fact that the guy is not apologizing. He’s just trying to convince me not to attack them by saying well we didn’t do anything wrong, but I’d never ask for an explanation. All he asked for was apology whether they were right or not was irrelevant they didn’t even say sorry when he asked and that’s one of the things Posiden sed he hated, his self righteousness and that as long as he thinks he’s right he doesn’t say sorry even though he caused pain but still claims to be a good person

I freaking love the depiction of this god. The crew isn't standing around while Posidon is monologuing. He's throwing his weight around with the water, and the depictions of what he's in control over. They're in HIS element, at the mercy of HIS creations. While the whole time they're fighting against it. He's depicted beautifully here. He's angry and upset and it really shows because he's not beating and targetting on Odysseus like in other animations, he's targeting everyone and anything that's in his waters without a second thought. This is my favorite animatic of Posidon so far.

God, yes, THIS. Zeus is the stoic King Of The Gods, he's their composed leader, nothing and no one can give him orders, and he's much more composed as the bastion of civilization. He's calm and in his element, his word is law, and he knows that he'll be obeyed no matter what.
Meanwhile Poseidon is the wild King Of The Oceans, he's the god of tempests and storm surges and 70% of the planet's surface. He's a terrifying force of nature that must be both feared and respected, because you cannot bargain with the ocean, you cannot plea with a creature born of wild waters.

@@Shadowblader98 It doesn't actually matter if Odysseus "makes excuses", Poseidon was never going to spare him in the first place, that's the essence of "ruthlessness"!
The reason he asks him to apologize is so he can show him that mercy is not an option in their world. It's a taunt, a way to strip him of all his dignity before inflicting the final blow.
"Look at you, you begged me and your men still died. Did you learn your lesson?"
That's why the line he says directly after Ody's apology is so important. Odysseus isn't being hopeful, he's being naive in thinking that after pissing off a god, a simple apology would fix everything.
He's teaching him to be ruthless by showing him the consequences of his... sentimentality, as Athena puts it.

The fact that Poseidon is an amputee and Odysseus *blinded* his son, giving him a disability as well? Makes his wrath more understandable, and the line you should have just killed him and avoided this. Poseidon knows how hard it is to live with a disability

    • @orianefaton1885
      @orianefaton1885 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +428

And his own disability is "easier" to naviguate thank to his control over water, which allow him to create a limb to replace the one he lacks (just like we see him do in the animation). How do you want to fix the blind eye of a cyclop ?
It is true that for his son, it is even more severe than for Poseidon himself, and he likely can acknowledge this. Plus, we don't know if Poseidon was disable for all his life or not.
I saw people mentionning maybe this version lost his arm either due to being eaten by Chronos (either the arm was digested or it was cut off by the teeth because he tried to fight back). In which case, he was basically disabled for all his life.
or he lost it in battle during Gigantomachia. In which case, he became disabled and had to adapt to it, so he has experienced some of the hardship his son will face.
I like the Chronos idea more because it would mean all the other siblings except Zeus would have scars, especially Hestia and Hades, as they are the first and second child respectively.
Plus, in this time period, I doubt there would be a lot of aid for the blind, especially adapted to the height of a cyclop... So, in a way, killing him would have been merciful toward both him and the crew.

My favorite parts of this animatic (in no particular order):
    - how Poseidon's pointed beard shape mimics the shape of a fish fin similar to how Zeus' beard in Thunderbringer looks like it's made of storm clouds
    - how all of his expressions the whole song long really convey that this is a father who is enraged that not only did someone blind his son but they then told his son their name as they sailed off while boasting about how they showed his son mercy. It's not a slow cold rage or almost playfully malicious rage that most animatics do. No, Poseidon is *pissed* and just like the ocean, there's very little that can stop him once he's on a roll
    - how the wave that collides with Odysseus' ship during the line of "you were far too nice" is shaped like a cyclops which we first see Odysseus' horror of seeing moments before it actually is seen by us during the line "But nooo"
    - the mirrored scenes of Odysseus catching Eurylochus when Eurylochus falls off the ship and then Eurylochus catching Odysseus so that he doesn't get blown away from the ship by the wind bag
    - The crew basically being like "Hoe don't do it... oh my gawd" when Odysseus is "apologizing" to Poseidon for hurting Polyphemus
    - I know I said it before but I think the contempt on Poseidon's face when he says "The line between naïveté and hopefulness is almost invisible" deserves a special mention like holy fuck
    - Mmmmm teleporting water arm because he is *literally* the ocean itself is such a tasty visual and display of not only Poseidon's might but also a reminder *that there is nowhere Odysseus can go that he can't follow as long as Odysseus is at sea*
    - Odysseus's crew having to hold him back and keep him from jumping overboard when Poseidon's decimating his crew is *chef's kiss*
    - The slow pan downwards so we can see not just the destruction above but the devastation below with the words "when does a ripple become a tidal wave?/when does a man become a monster" really sets things up for when they're in the Underworld and Odysseus is confronted by the souls of his men that died under his command
    - Poseidon's expression is full on mocking Odysseus by echoing his words that he spoke to Polyphemus right back at him: "I am your darkest moment"
    - The moment of realization and hope as Odysseus spies the wind bag and the manic grin as Poseidon asks for his last words and he bursts out "ALL I HAVE TO DO IS OPEN THIS BAG!" before leaping overboard to do just that
    - Odysseus pensively looking at the ground as his remaining crew celebrates the fact that they're alive, before looking out to sea to see Poseidon seething in the distance and once again throwing Odysseus' words back into his face: "Remember me..."
.... so yeah I really loved this animatic lol

It fit really well with how posidon is depicted in the Odyssey itself. Extremely dangerous but also stern and honest and interestingly as fair. In the episode when the story of ares and Aphrodite cheating is told (yes, that's a passage from the Odyssey) Poseidon is one of the few people that does not make fun of Hephaestos but also tells him to let his wife and brother free from the chains he literally cought them cheating in. He presumably does this to stop the public humiliation of Hephaestos but also the punishment Ares and Aphrodite. That this story is even part of the Odyssey kinda shows, that while Poseidon may be the antagonist of the story, he is not "evil"

In lots of animatics he comes off as creepy or sinister, and your version is definitely intimidating, but this Poseidon doesn't look like he's going to be subtle or manipulative, which is perfect because he's not that kind of god. This Poseidon is pissed off and is planning to beat the shit out of some arrogant mortals, and all he needs is brute force to do it. He doesn't even look like he's bothering to talk directly to Odysseus, because why would he care if some puny king is listening to what he's saying? Something I don't really see being mentioned but that I really enjoy is how in this depiction Poseidon's hair shifts between looking like normal hair and back into literal waters when he is in use of his powers! That's a really cool detail, like how his hair falls down at 2:22 when he demands an apology. Also I can't tell of Odysseus' smile at the end of his apology is desperation or him thinking he's gotten himself out of trouble again this time.

This animatic had a lot of really good details. Poseidon forming the water into a image of his son, the Cyclops. All of Odysseus's men lending a hand to help hold the rope, reinforcing the fact that he needs their strength to survive making the soon-to-be destruction that much worse. Also super unsafe but Odysseus walking the broken mast kind of like walking the plank to put himself out there and apologize in hopes of saving his crew helps show his selflessness.
I always thought that the encounter versus Poseidon and Zeus two sides of the same coin, and keeping that in mind all of these moments here make the ones in the Zeus encounter that much more tragic. Selflessness versus selfishness and all that.
Also I just really like Poseidon having a hand made of water kind of with claws... it just looks cool. Great work!

I also really love that this animatic shows actually very little of Poseidon and mostly focuses on the destruction and Odysseus and his crew's effort to survive. That is such a fascinating and awesome take of this scene!
Lastly; I find it hilarious that this is called an animatic when like it's just a few in-between frames and a couple of backgrounds away from being just a "finished" animation. It's very polished and excellently produced.

And mild spoilers if you don't know; He does. Literally the moment he arrives back on shore in Ithica, Poseidon appears and tells him to get back in the ocean, or he will destroy the entire city. Poseidon won the moment Athena was no longer protecting him. And nothing that Odysseus could do, would really change that.

When he eventually snaps or shows his anger other than the fury on his face, his hair stands up or floats, kind of reminding me of waves or currents slowly getting higher like tsunamis, almost mad, in a way. The art is so good, too! I aspire to animate like you someday and express these small yet key details that tell the audience what kind of character they are in ways other than verbal methods.

There’s so, so much here I love. The song is a constant attack. He isn’t playing or messing around. He isn’t trying to teach Odysseus a lesson to be less merciful. He wants him dead, he’s actually being Ruthless. Showing the crew struggling to keep their boat intact was also masterfully done. Even just small details like how the only characters in white are Odysseus, Eurylochus, and Poseidon, while the rest are gray like the backgrounds, heck even the wind bag has white highlights, so your eyes are automatically drawn to what is important. As soon as I finished watching this, I just instantly watched it again (funnily enough, same thing happened with your Thunder Bringer animatic) I’m eager to see whatever song you choose next. I know another commenter said it but I would love to see the Underworld, especially with how detailed even your background characters are. More than worth the wait, spectacular job.

THANK YOU! The underworld is high up on my list of what to do next! I plan on doing the whole play it’s just so hard picking what to do next (especially with the new sagas coming out!)

I LOVE how violent this was, and yes his water taking shapes so the ocean STAMPEDES their fleet with literal horses perfectly articulates the force of the water
The Cyclopes smashing their boat and how you can clearly see how it’s taking every ounce of effort just to survive the entire time

There's a thousand details i want to mention in this because it's so amazing. Poseidon's necklace, the windbag foreshadow through the animation, Eurylochus working his damn hardest to keep the ship afloat and protecting his captain. It's just packed of excellent ideas, i feel i'm gonna rewatch this againand again for '12 years or so'. Or more.

I love how you made Poseidon angry and furios unlike the other animatics where he is sadisticly enjoying tormenting odysseus.
2:08 HOLY OLYMPUS LOOK AT THAT STAMPEDE.

First time I’ve seen a depiction of Poseidon actively holding Ody and the 43 out of the water while the rest are thrashed about.
Somehow makes their feeling of helplessness more powerful, as it’s not just them standing in horror. They’re literally trapped in the palm of his hand!
Poseidon even gave them a good view of all the carnage, how generous.😊

Gigi's animatic has them being held up out of the water at that part as well.

God I LOVE the amount of representation of Poseidon also being the god of horses I’ve been seeing in animatics for ruthlessness, I love this community

2:09 The waves being horses! Horses and water are hard enough individually, but combined? That is one gorgeous artistic flex *chefs kiss*

oh my god! This is AMAZING! I love how he makes the waves into horses AND how Ody jumps into the water to cut the bag open! Bravo! (And as a side note, I can totally see the family resemblance between Poseidon and Zeus)

This was an incredible experience, my god. The posing and proportion of an almighty being like Poseidon being so big that his fingernail is the size of one of their boats. Him leaving a warning of “remember me and what I can and WILL do” with the debris and corpses floating in his hair. Odysseus raising his hands in fear but hope that Poseidon will spare them. This was ✨stellar✨

I love Poseidon's expressions throughout this whole thing. That is the face of a pissed-off dad ready to avenge his child, and I"m here for it
