Damon Duanno absolutely nails the balance between sorrow and resolve in this. It’s a shame the broadway bridge isn’t in this. His Orpheus is my favorite still.
I have never listened to this musical and haven't even heard of it (I figured from the description that it's something about Orpheus and Eurydice?) but freaking hell, the facial expressions and the voice of Orpheus are literally breaking my heart and he is so well drawn (like EVERYTHING in this) and the man with hat (Hermes? From what I figured from the comments) is just SO AWESOME with his all-raspy voice and accent and this laid-backness, I don't know the character but judging from the voice I think you captured all his traits perfectly. He reminds me of Sans from game Undertale. And that expression of him when he says "but I guess you weren't listenin'", like some kind of a ironic but somewhat sad and symphatizing smile and how HEARTBROKEN and weak Orpheus sounds when he says "with all my heart" and how desperate he looks and how everything is dark and eerie when he sneaks into the Hadestown, it's such a scary and haunting mood in that scene and how beautiful Orpheus sing this "waaaait for me", I just can't put this into words, it's perfect and his voice is so mesmerizing and everything!! And I LOVE how the man with hat later appears in front of Orpheus, warning him with that stern and ominous look on his face and the scenes with Orpheus' memories with him and Eurydice and how he's losing his mind are plainly heartbreaking, thank you so much for sharing this, you're awesome and I'll go listen to the rest of soundtrack now.
My friend found this on accident, and we’re both obsessed with so many musicals, and she texted me saying “OH NO. ANOTHER MUSICAL” and then she sent me this link. I’ve honestly never heard any of these songs, but I’m obsessed with this one. Whenever I can I will try and listen to this whole soundtrack, but I just wanted to say this: You are such an amazing artist and this is such an amazing animatic.
For those who are just hearing of hadestown: make sure to listen to the concept album too! It came before it was turned into a musical and has some songs not on the cast album but still in the show. Also! "Anyway the Wind blows" was a song off one of anaïs Mitchell's (the composer) solo albums and was turned into the intro to the show. Hope everyone enjoys hadestown it's an awesome show!
I totally Agree! This is the kind of stuff that would be Iconic in a classic Hand drawn film. Something like what we see with this animatic. It's 2 much of a master piece to need cgi or live action. This would truly fit best with that Hand Drawn organic feel. This musical already feels nostalgic with it's music and story telling style. So Hand drawn to look like it feels like it could be long to the Golden age would hit home. I don't want Disney involved though. I think Disney back then could do better than to say but I feel this needs a non Disney asthetic. Like it looking as good as if it was Disney but by some one else instead. Besides Disney might try to insert another Hades into this and I feel those 2 Should remain separate. They are both really good interation of Hades in general but we don't need two inerationa of Disney Hades. Descendants already did that. Disney gave us 3 different Mallefecents by now too. Time for Someone else to shine.
I love the way Hermes looks when he says "With all your heart." He KNOWS how this is going to go. He knows it won't end welll. But, he still wants to let Orpheus try and change the ending.
I legitimately think you are a big reason why a lot of people found this show before the Broadway release… I remember telling all my friends about this little Indie show called Hadestown after I learned about it from this video, and watching the show explode in popularity was amazing. I was finally able to see it in person with the touring company last week - and hearing Wait For Me live brought me back to this video… the one that brought this incredible show to my ears those few years ago. Thank you so much for this!

Rockinashy It is!😄 I was introduced to the musical by this animation and loved the song so much that I looked up the plot and everything so I could know what was going on. Apparently it’s a Depression Era version of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, and Hades is the owner of a huge underground mine+factory+city, also known as Hadestown (I’m not quite sure about the factory part but they was what I gathered based off the lyrics in other songs).
This is wonderful! Your Hermes and your Orpheus are perfect and the way you illustrate the journey with a mix of the modern and the mythical - the cameras, the coin! And the fact that Orpheus was bringing Eurydice flowers -- that's lovely and so appropriate considering her later song.
I remember when this was one of the only Hadestown animatics out there. I loved it then and I still think it’s the best representation of the emotional journey. I play this in my head every time I hear this song. Great video ❤️
This is so phenomenally beautiful. The visuals are absolutely stunning, and the detail knocked the breath right out of my lungs. I adore your art style and how you visualized each scene; the entire animatic is rich with life and effort, and there's not a second where I felt disinterested or had to wait for the visuals to grab my attention. This is so well-done and I really hope you're proud of it, because it's made my day and, as it seems, a lot of other people's too. The work you put into this is outstanding!
Back in 2018 I came across this animatic in the midst of watching a bunch of other ones, and it got me immediately hooked on the concept album & musical. Tonight I finally got to see the show on Broadway and it was just an incredible experience. When I got home I got the urge to watch this again, and was glad to see it still saved in one of my playlists!
This is the video that got me in to Hadestown. A year and a half later and I can't believe how much the show has grown. I remember searching high and low for any footage of the show, then I got to see it in London at Christmas, now it's just swept at the Tony's. I'm so proud ❤
oh BOY this is good. i love hadestown and you really went above and beyond with this song. i love all the little details too-- like the added blinks during the scenes with orpheus and hermes. it really gives that lifelike-animated touch! and the scene with orpheus walking down the train tracks with nothing but a bucket of paint, a coin, and his guitar getting ready to tear down the boards of the blocked entrance was really something. please keep up the storyboarding!!

Oh, holy shit???? Whaaaaa, how have I NOT heard of this musical before? The song and voices are gorgeous and so is your drawing style!! Like, I fell so hard for this fandom, like thank you? Thank you so much for introducing us!
Dont get me wrong, I love the Broadway cast, Reeve Carney does amazing as Orpheus, but something about this version is just so much more impactful for me
This is honestly incredible. Your art style itself is amazing, and idk but the use if colors really stood out and the transitions were so good and fluid. (also this song is really catchy and I've started to listen to the soundtrack-- time to delve into yet another musical)
I love the portray of Hermes in this. He's got this old school con-artist vibe to him. He comes off like he's working some kind of an angle, and yet the whole way he's helping Orpheus along, keeping the kid on his toes. Also, the portrayal of Asphodel as this endless field of souls wandering to and from the mines of Hades is just...absolutely horrifying. Bravo.
Just saw Hadestown yesterday, and I’m coming coming back to this video now because it was the one that got me all into it. Thank you so much for making this. Literally shaped my future LMFAO
This was one if my favorite myths. Eurydice died in her sleep while Orpheus was out.and when Orpheus came back her body was gone so he went to tell the townspeople what happended, and since he was famous for his amazing fiddle play in skills,an old lady told him that the only way to see his dear eurydice was to go down into the golden gates.so the old lady led him to the grave yard.he listened to her and eventually he was brought down to the gates.once he was there an angel asked him his purpose and he told her about his dear love.when she refused he bribed her with his fiddle skills.when he played it she cried so she let him see his beautiful eurydice. But the only rule was that he couldn't look at her on his way back or eurydice couldn't go back to the surface with him.he did as he was told, until they were at the entrance.eight before they could exit Orpheus couldn't take it anymore and he turned around and looked at her.she wasn't behind him, because he didn't do as he was told.the entrance sealed and he was stuck,6 feet under.so,now Orpheus walked along the tunnel for the rest of his life until he was a ghost and played his sorrow fiddle.on some nights,on eurydice death day,you can hear his soft fiddle.
This is absolutely spectacular. I love Hadestown to bits, especially this song, and this was beautifully done. I must say you have a talent in visual storytelling, and you can really give a visual design of the entire universe of Hadestown. I also adore the way you draw characters and their expressions, and the color palette in this is very pleasing to the eye, with that it really sets the mood with darker colors mixed with the orange accents that have a firey sort of tone, which contrasts quite well. Overall, this is fantastic, and you have great potential my friend. I hope to see more from you in the future. 💕
This is absolutely gorgeous work. Thank you for this. I have always thought this music could be expressed visually in this way. Please do more. Patrick Page (Hades)

I AM RED
Yes this is exactly how I feel too, you put it so perfectly into words.
Jesibug * is it scary that my friend texted me the exact same thing?

Hermes:I'm not supposed to tell you how to get to hadestown *Tells Orpheus how to get to hadestown anyway*
That's it,that's basically Hermes in Mythology. He'll be like I'm not supposed to do the thing but guess what I'm doing it anyway!
i mean the first thing Hermes did was steal his stepbrothers cows and eat them, so he never really followed rules
i’ve never heard this version and when he burst into that first wait for me i actually stopped breathing and teared up. he has a beautiful voice

When he said “with all my heart” I teared up a lil
an actual real life hadestown animatic!? i’m in love (especially with how good it is?! so much shading and detail :,)))
I love how Hermes is just plain disappointed. "Orpheus, you're a FAILURE, and NO ticket. I raised you better."
I think if Hadestown should be a movie musical, it should be made into a 2D animation, like one of the classic disney movies.
I'd love to see hadestown in princess frog style
Holy sht I'm now in love with this musical. Thanks for introducing me to this masterpiece. Hope you make more stuff like this, love your work!
Perontivine did you watch it live? 😄I don’t live anywhere it showcased so I’m trying to look for it online but I can’t find anything 😰
Popco Panda I didn't, but I found the whole soundtrack in YT. I think it's a different cast though. ^^
I wanna like this so bad but... Hadestown... 666... it's perfect
The way you drew Eurydice made me think of Esmerelda from Hunchback of Notre Dame.
THE E F F E C T S!!

THE VISUALS!!!
OH MY GOD THE VISUALS!!!!

1) i agree! this is incredible!
2) michael, nO-
Gosh darn it Rich.
[ORPHEUS, spoken]
Eurydice?
[HERMES, spoken]
Hey, the big artiste!
Ain't you working on your masterpiece?
[ORPHEUS, spoken]
Where is she?
[HERMES, spoken]
Brother, what do you care?
You'll find another muse somewhere
[ORPHEUS, spoken]
Where is she?
[HERMES, spoken]
Why do you wanna know?
[ORPHEUS]
Wherever she is, is where I'll go
[HERMES, spoken]
What if I said she's down below?
[ORPHEUS, spoken]
Down below?
[HERMES, spoken]
Down below
Six-feet-under-the-ground below
She called your name before she went
But I guess you weren't listening
[ORPHEUS, spoken]
No...
[HEREMES, spoken]
So...
Just how far would you go for her?
[ORPHEUS]
To the end of time
To the end of the earth
[HERMES, spoken]
You got a ticket?
[ORPHEUS, spoken]
No...?
[HERMES, spoken]
Yeah, I didn't think so
'Course, there is another way, but
I ain't supposed to say it
[ORPHEUS, spoken]
Another way?
[HERMES, spoken]
Yeah, around the back
But that ain't easy walkin', Jack
It ain't for the sensitive of soul, so...
You really wanna go?
[ORPHEUS, spoken]
With all my heart.
[HERMES, spoken]
Huh, with all your heart...
Well, that's a start.
[HERMES, muffled]
How to get to Hadestown:
You’ll have to take the long way down
Through the underground, under cover of night
Laying low, staying out of sight
There ain’t no compass, brother, ain’t no map
Just a telephone wire and the railroad track
You keep on walking and you don’t look back
’Til you get to the bottomland
[ORPHEUS]
Wait for me, I’m coming
Wait, I’m coming with you
Wait for me, I’m coming too
I’m coming too
[HERMES, muffled]
The River Styx is high and wide
Cinder bricks and razor wire
Walls of iron and concrete
Hound dogs howling 'round the gate
Them dogs’ll lay down and play dead
If you got the bones, if you got the bread
But if all you got is your own two legs
You best be glad you got ’em
[ORPHEUS and FATES]
Wait for me, I’m coming
Wait, I’m coming with you
Wait for me, I’m coming too
I’m coming too
[HERMES]
You’re on the lam, you’re on the run
Don’t give your name, you don’t have one
And don’t look no one in the eye
This town will try to suck you dry
They’ll suck your brain, they’ll suck your breath
They’ll pluck the heart right out your chest
They’ll truss you up in your Sunday best
And stuff your mouth with cotton
[ORPHEUS and COMPANY]
Wait for me, I’m coming
Wait, I’m coming with you
Wait for me, I’m coming too
I’m coming!
Wait,
Wait,
Wait,
Wait...
I love it when people type down the lyrics, awesome work man ^^
I've never even heard of this musical before, but just this chorus is so stirring, and your artwork makes it that much cooler. Awesome.
I LOVE THE HADESTOWN SOUNDTRACK!!! I GOTTA SEE THIS SHOW!!
RosedCat I truly recommend it, it is spectacular
I saw it with Reeve Carney as Orpheus. It was fantastic!
Sadly, I don't believe its playing anywhere near the west coast T^T Missed opportunities =w=
It was in Edmonton at the Citadel but sadly I never got to see t 😭😭
so does he find her?
I can't when he starts to have flash backs of her it hurts my heart
tell me bout it. You can tell they shared some good amount of time together and had some moments to realy help build their love for one another.
Orpheus: *-Waait for m--*
*Burr in the background* : *_WAIT FOR IT!!_*
WAIT WHAT?? IS THIS BASED OFF THE MYTH? duuuude that’s my second favorite myth after cupid and psyche 😭
Ohhhh. If you like Orpheus I suggest, if you havent, listen to a song called "Beat of Her Heart" by Gungor, its also about Orpheus
S A M E
me too! I like the myths of Cupid and Psyche, Orpheus and Eurydice, and Icarus
Meghan Broking I think in Roman methology it's Cupid.
blESS YOU THERE ARENT ENOUGH HADESTOWN ANIMATICS AND THIS IS GORGEOUS
This is wonderful! Your Hermes and your Orpheus are perfect and the way you illustrate the journey with a mix of the modern and the mythical - the cameras, the coin! And the fact that Orpheus was bringing Eurydice flowers -- that's lovely and so appropriate considering her later song.
I was so addicted to this song and animation when I was locked up and this musical is just so nostalgic
jfc... that first "wait for me" nails me straight in the feels every time. Every. Single. Time
THAT FACIAL DROP AT 0:03 WAS BEEAUTIFUL
Simply amazing. The hell scenes are so visceral and effective.
Thanks

I love reeve’s Orpheus but DAMN Damon’s emotion and his voices sweetness just are so endearing and beautiful.
7catsinatrenchcoat oh hi cee! big agree
i am now listening to hadestown :0 what an amazing musical! the music is eery and yet oh so gorgeous? anyways!! i love this!!!!!
This animatic got me into Hadestown! Also I just now noticed how the facial expression changing synchronizes with the music at 0:03, very well done
oh BOY this is good. i love hadestown and you really went above and beyond with this song. i love all the little details too-- like the added blinks during the scenes with orpheus and hermes. it really gives that lifelike-animated touch! and the scene with orpheus walking down the train tracks with nothing but a bucket of paint, a coin, and his guitar getting ready to tear down the boards of the blocked entrance was really something. please keep up the storyboarding!!
watching this again and GOD the way his voice softens at 3:31 when he sees Eurydice HH H H H H H H HH HH I TEARED UP, GOD U CAN HEAR THE YEARNING AND YOU MATCHED THE VISUALS SO PERFECTLY TO IT
One ticket to the HadesTown fandom... Wait... I'm already in so many... Maybe I shouldn't... **gets dragged into it** WAIT NO! I DIDN'T SIGN UP FOR A FEELS TRIP
my friend got me into Hadestown, and I’ve just been listening to wait for me on repeat for the last month and a half.
I.👏
CANT.👏
STOP.👏
Me watching this for the first time:
*OK BUT HIS VOCALS*
It's absolutely beautiful! The effort you put into this...Time to watch it again a 100 times.💗
I'm so happy someone finally made an animatic for Hadestown! I LOVE IT SO MUCH! YOU'RE AWESOME!
Oh, holy shit???? Whaaaaa, how have I NOT heard of this musical before? The song and voices are gorgeous and so is your drawing style!! Like, I fell so hard for this fandom, like thank you? Thank you so much for introducing us!
this animatic changed my brain chemistry when i first saw it. every couple years i come back and check to make sure its still here.
Dont get me wrong, I love the Broadway cast, Reeve Carney does amazing as Orpheus, but something about this version is just so much more impactful for me
Damon Daunno hits different
I think it's because Hermes voice just has that impact, the deep sorrowful tone that really suits this better.
tell me bout it brother.
feel lot more nostalgic this way.
How have I not heard of this musical before? Much love.
This is honestly incredible. Your art style itself is amazing, and idk but the use if colors really stood out and the transitions were so good and fluid. (also this song is really catchy and I've started to listen to the soundtrack-- time to delve into yet another musical)
Thank you so much for getting me into this musical...and into this folk genre of musicals! This. Is. Awesome!
AHHHH YES thank you for watching. I really hope more people get into the show. :')
This is so well drawn and those angles? Magnificent god damn
Not to be rude, but this sounds like a Christianized version of the actual myth...
Curry the one I just did was one where it was acceptable to be in a children's book>and it was kinda
Who in their right mind would rewrite a weird christianized version of this story lol
Timothy christians
what do ya mean " where it was acceptable to be in a children's book" ya can just revise the actual story not fucking make it all christian and shit
i haven't even heard of this musical before but this really makes me wanna check it out!
I was scrolling through the comments and I saw yoongi and I just want to say I love you
Honestly, I love this version more than the official cast release (I'm sure the art has a lot to do with it!)

AHHHHHHH SO DO I?!?!? ISN'T THIS PARADOXICAL?!?!?!!?
If only this was how me and my brother treated each other. He said to listen to my “stupid musicals” ffs I have no brother
Welp i guess ive found another musical to get absorbed into, honestly though this is great!
the “where is she?” at 0:28 hits so hard and i don’t know why
Five years later and this is still such an amazing video. One of my absolute favorites!
This animatic is truly stunning. The amount of effort put into each individual character and frame astonished me. This... this is art, right here.
This is such a wholesome comment. Thank you so much! :')
HOLY HELL THIS IS A MASTERPIECE
Haha. Hell. Underworld. Get it? You get it. x)
rowan ain’t you working on your masterpiece
"With all my heart"
"ah...with all your heart..." this kills me every time I hear it... What an incredible deliverance. What an incredible animation.
Your art went so splendidly with the music. Really, from my heart, thank you!
This video was the first to get me into Hadestown. And I would like to say thank you
