Right? I was listening to this last night and it just amazed me that somehow, this song that has been built up through the whole musical as a song that could change the world actually lives up to that high level of expectation. I've never heard another song like it.
@@maicey_t.IKR!!! I’d seen RENT before this so honestly my expectations for “yet-written song that’s been hyped up the entire show” were very low… and then i heard this and was blown out of the water. And every time I hear it I believe again that it could make Hades change his mind
The thing that gets me most is that the melody Orpheus sings is heavily implied to be a song of love. The feeling of love, not just the words. And Hadestown is barren, cold, and (as implied in the Broadway version of Way Down Hadestown II I believe) nobody remembers their name, home or loved ones. But as everybody joins in with Orpheus, you realise that nobody has forgotten love.
No matter how good the OBC is, I don't think any remake of this song could ever top this original. The echeos of everyone's voices when the instruments drop out... incredibly moving.
I feel like the original better captures how the song is supposed to be this epic poem as well as a love song. It really gives me vibes that this is something with ancient and deep roots, but the OBC simply turned it into more of a love song and simplified it a whole lot more.
I think that this version has a lot more soul and emotion than the version on broadway. Not to say the other one isn't good, but it tells a story more than anything - which was probably what they were going for. It's just that this one really conveys raw emotion and it's more believable that Hades is moved by it.
The Broadway one feels like a performance, because it is. Hades wanted Orpheus to sing him a song, and that's what was given. but in this version, Orpheus tells him a story
My one major complaint about the Broadway version of Hadestown is how they absolutely destroyed this song in the rewrite. (I understand thematically why it was changed and why they rewrote it when the focus shifted more to how Hades’ actions affected the world.) When I often get to this point in the Broadway soundtrack, I often listen to this version instead. There’s so much more heart. Hades is only a man just as Orpheus, who’s in love with a woman he’d do anything for. They’re perfect foils of each other. And aaaaa, I just am so sad this version didn’t make it to Broadway.
@@coffin_qt I'll never get over the clunky use of the word "lady" instead of woman in the Broadway version. Such a shame because this was my dark horse favorite song from this version of the musical.
“And suddenly, he saw her there-Persephone, in her mother’s garden. The sun on her shoulders, wind in her hair…” One of the most beautiful parts of this play. They don’t have it in the Broadway version, right? A shame because it’s so powerful, especially how he sang it. I could vividly imagine a beautiful lady in a flower field, glowing in the sunlight.
DCdabest Oh! My bad, lol. Wouldn’t this be charm person though? I’m pretty sure you can do that at higher levels, though that obviously does nothing to DC, it just sounds better to say the highest level lol

This version of Epic III has always hit the hardest and this cathedral edit makes the chorus feel like it did the first time I discovered this song, and that is the highest of compliments
It’s awesome because it sounds like he’s performing in Hades’ throne room. And when everyone joins in during “la la la la la la la” gives me chills every time. You’re breathtaking 👌
Around the end, this becomes a song about fleeting youth and I've never related so hard. "What he's defending..... It's already gone." I'm actually crying.
I'll admit I just expected a cathedral sound edit but goodness me. SURPRISE IT MOVES AND IT'S GONNA MAKE YOU CRY. I always get so emotional about Epic III but this was stunning. I got chills all over again as the screen lit up more and more. It was so beautiful how that gold light just started to spread. And when Hades looked around at everyone joining in. I got misty-eyed in the end and that hasn't happened for Hadestown since maybe the sixth relisten. So overall this was lovely, and thank you.

Dear TH-cam, Can you help me find the "love" button for a video? Or perhaps the "utterly adore" button? There's a certain cathedral edit that definitely deserves it.
Your profile picture reminded me, that I used that one as a cover image for a completely unrelated song, but now I want to relisten to that song again, because it filled me with such a good feeling, and I wanna relisten to the whole album from which that song came, just- Thank you for reminding me of a thing I loved. :)
My hamster has unlimited energy and can escape anything, we’ve started keeping a hammer on her cage because she’ll throw off the lid otherwise, sat perfectly still listening to this. When different parts came in she would look around trying to find where the voices were coming from. She has sat still for the longest amount of time I’ve ever seen now. I guess everyone in this house just loves this song.
the obcr did this entire album so dirty, but the way this song was basically completely rewritten is its biggest crime. so so beautiful and I wish it was kept this way for broadway :'/
"The sun on her shoulders, wind in her hair... the smell of the flowers she held in her hand and the pollen that fell from her fingertips. AND SUDDEEENNLYY HADES WAS ONLY A MAN" I- WHY DID THEY REMOVE THIS VERSION?!?!!
Fun fact : hades didn’t really care about eurydice . He had nothing to do with her . When eurydice died , she actually died by a poisonous snake . And like every other soul she went to the underworld. When people think about the underworld where hades is , they think fire and souls . But actually there are 3 places in the underworld . First is where bad bad people are (torture) ,2nd is where the not to bad and not to good people go (regular people) and the last is basically a place which is like heaven .place is Beautiful and only good people can go . When Orpheus found out he went to Zeus and Zeus said he couldn’t do anything bout gave him a chance to talk to hades . He sent Hermès with him and both went to the underworld . When meeting hades , persephone was next to him . And orpheus sang a song that even made hades one of the three gods cry silver . orpheus was known to have a better voice then his father god of music . When hades gave them the test and they failed . Orpheus had never been in any other relationship. He would sing sad songs over and over again . He would also sing songs of other gods story’s . When three girls were mad they couldn’t have orpheus , they snuck at night and killed him . And now he’s in the underworld where eurydice is
These cathedral edits are the most beautiful thing I’ve heard in a long time, add hadestown to it and you have me sobbing. Your art is absolutely gorgeous as well. ❤️
In the actual play theres a moment at the beginning where Hades is like "oh its a song about me!" And its the cutest thing and takes the edge off the tension beautifully
i come back to this video all the time. i don't think anything will ever beat this version of the song and i would love to hear the broadway orpheuses sing it, but alas. there's also something really special about the characterisation of orpheus in the nytw version, idek what it is, he seems so raw and real and he has that kind of spark to him that i think has gone away a bit. the broadway version is beautiful but i do think he's a different character, and this song became a different song, too.
Everything about this is *beautiful* and amazing. This song fits the cathedral effect like no other, and every single frame of artwork is gorgeous and detailed. I especially like the “halo” around Orpheus as he sings “la-lalalalala!”
Man I have to watch this video a lot to both remind myself how perfect Damon Duanno is as Orpheus and to bask in the cathedral edit beauty like hot damn
thank you, but it ain't talent, just lots of work and reference! i'd already had some experience w/ painting and i used Over the Garden Wall backgrounds to figure out how to draw the nature stuff
This is very well done. And the image of Hades so huge and sitting on a throne reminds me of the first version of the Orpheus story I ever read, which was the one in the Sandman comics.
The combination of Damon Daunno's beautiful vocals with the acoustics of a cathedral is something so full of transcendent beauty that it's enough to make one's entire soul stir with feelings that words cannot begin to express. Thanks for all the effort you put into this. It amplifies the music with so much more elegance and grace. I can't say enough positive things about it!
talented brilliant incredible amazing spectacular showstopping totally unique completely not ever been done before unafraid to reference or not reference--
I don't know what it is, but this made me adore the key of Eb minor. It's so etherial and enchanting and so mystical, like you're singing with these fairies or ghosts and you feel warm and loved inside. This is beautiful. Thanks.
Not only is the sound edit stunning, but the art that goes along with it, really captures the emotion and visuals in this song. I got really teary eye, especially the part where everything is white and it's Orpheus singing about what Hades is now. It's just so breath taking, and raw. You did amazing, absolutely amazing.
Oh, my Gods. This is fucking amazing. This is the quality I aspire to have in my own animatics/animations. Huge, huge kudos to you for making this song even better with your art. (And I can tell that the cathedral edit of the song must've been quite hard to perfect) If I wasn't so controlling over my tear ducts, I'd be sobbing right now. You deserve so many more views and subscribers, friend.
Mate, I just want to say: The song is beautiful, and it's one of my favourite songs, not only of Hadestown or of Musical Theatre, but in general. And the cathedral edit is just lovely, oh my word. But what I wanted to say most is this: Your artwork there tells the story so well, and it's truly beautiful. The animation style, I'm assuming it's digital art, is just absolutely beautiful. I cried while watching the video. Especially the moment at the end with Hades and Persephone in the garden, and then the hands of Hades and Persephone at the end.... oh my gosh mate. Bloody beautiful. Well done. Very well done.
Okay, but this is actually one of the best “cathedral” edits I’ve heard in a while?? Usually it’s just a cacophonous mess, but this is so easy to listen to! Nice job.
thank you thank you THANK YOU for introducing me to this version of epic iii. i thought carney’s was the best version, but this THIS LANDS A WHOLE LOT BETTER WITH ME IN ITS ENTIRETY. now don’t get me wrong: i love reeve, he does orpheus so excellently, but there’s just this tenderness and vulnerability in damon daunno’s voice that just procures him the title of Modern Orpheus, bestowed by yours truly. and thank you very much for amplifying this magical experience through your stellar art as always!
I've always loved your cathedral edits, but the art on this is fantastic! I love the way you depicted the 'La La La' part, with a glow getting brighter until it consumes everything (It reminded me of the chandelier in Great Comet). And the end was just so beautiful and sweet. Thank you for all your hard work!
Its a misty night, the faint outlines of trees barely visible. The stillness, and the chill that creeps up my spine made me feel wistful. I layed my head on my window sill and listened to this, and welcomed the crisp bitter breeze. A winter night made indescribably beautiful. Thank you
i cry every time i watch this. seriously, it’s beautiful in every way. i mean, hadestown already makes me weak in the knees, but this is quite literally poetry in motion and it gives me so many good feelings at once. I love this video.
Jaaliyah Rios god. ive been ruminating on this for the past 2 days unsure how to respond, and i gotta say this is very... touching of you to say, considering especially that i struggle w/ insecurity abt how well my work communicates the same emotions that drove me to make it, so... thank you, very very much 💛
This genuinely made me break down weeping. I love this song so much, and the visuals and extra reverberations just made me cry from the beauty of it. Thank you.
This is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard. I saw the show last December and I would have bawled my eyes out even more if they kept this version.
Hey, I wanted you to know that this videi is the reason this is one of my all-time favourite songs ever. This video made me enjoy everything and to its full capacity, thank you.
this is STUNNING. when the people appeared among the scaffolding, i got tears in my eyes. this song has such a powerful, magical feeling, and you captured it PERFECTLY. wow.
I like both this and the Broadway version of the song for different reasons. (I like this one more but both are really good.) In this version, there's so much emotion, and I love how the melody shifts over the song. In the other song, it doesn't do that as much and there's less emotion, but it does seem more like Orpheus didn't have the song finished completely and just winged it because he was desperate. I don't know if this is intentional, but I do think it's a little more realistic because before Orpheus went after Eurydice he still didn't have it finished. Edit edit: also I was extremely fortunate to be able to see the touring production of it recently and ngl the Broadway version of epic iii was a jump scare after watching this video so much lmaoo
it's not realistic because Orpheus was the fabled to be the best poet and singer the world has ever known, causing even death to weep. but Broadway just made him a bumbling dullard
@@theshockinglyeloquentdog9945 I mean they never said being the best meant he could write that in a single moment, like I think it humanizes him to have him struggle on the song. He'd be much less compelling if he just woke up and immediately brought back spring with a song

Suddenly, when he saw her there
Persephone in her mother’s garden
Sun on her shoulders, wind in her hair
The smell of the flowers she held in her hand
And the pollen that fell from her fingertips
And suddenly Hades was only a man
With a taste of nectar upon his lips, singing:

Now that the man is King?
What has become of the heart of that man,

The more he has, the more he holds,
The greater the weight of the world on his shoulders
See how he labors beneath that load
Afraid to look up, and afraid to let go
And he keeps his head low, and he keeps his back bending
He grows so afraid that he'll lose what he owns
But what he doesn't know is that what he's defending
Is already gone
Where is the treasure inside your chest?
Where is your pleasure? Where is your youth?
Where is the man with his hat in his hands?

@@imthecoolestguyalive Hey you're welcome! Bukowski is one of my favorites :-)
Woah, that's so cool!
That's some peculiar hamster
I agree
the obcr did this entire album so dirty, but the way this song was basically completely rewritten is its biggest crime. so so beautiful and I wish it was kept this way for broadway :'/
this pains every day of my life
It bothers me how watered down the Broadway version is
"The sun on her shoulders, wind in her hair... the smell of the flowers she held in her hand and the pollen that fell from her fingertips. AND SUDDEEENNLYY HADES WAS ONLY A MAN" I- WHY DID THEY REMOVE THIS VERSION?!?!!
Sometimes I forget exactly how beautiful this musical is
Persephones tired, happy expression near the end is so good
amazing that even in a musical that hades is the main villain/antagonist his most basic personality trait is: I just love my wife so fucking much
YOU'RE TELLING ME THIS WAS AN ANIMATIC AND I DIDNT KNOW THIS WHOLE TIME BECAUSE I WOULD JUST LISTEN TO IT INSTEAD OF WATCHING!?!?!

This has 0 dislikes because even the King of Hell loves it.
Sadly now it has 8
@@wormwood8903 those are the jealous people that couldnt make this
This aged well
Well now there's no dislike button
I came from Tumblr and I haven't left in a FAT minute
i love the broadway version, but man- THIS VERSION SLAPS WAY HARDER
In the actual play theres a moment at the beginning where Hades is like "oh its a song about me!" And its the cutest thing and takes the edge off the tension beautifully
nobody talks about hermes backup solo during the la’s but it’s what makes the song so good
i come back to this video all the time. i don't think anything will ever beat this version of the song and i would love to hear the broadway orpheuses sing it, but alas. there's also something really special about the characterisation of orpheus in the nytw version, idek what it is, he seems so raw and real and he has that kind of spark to him that i think has gone away a bit. the broadway version is beautiful but i do think he's a different character, and this song became a different song, too.
Everything about this is *beautiful* and amazing. This song fits the cathedral effect like no other, and every single frame of artwork is gorgeous and detailed. I especially like the “halo” around Orpheus as he sings “la-lalalalala!”
I know everyone is in love with Orpheus in this song but can we!! Talk about Hermes' vocals in the background!!? I love it so much!!
Man I have to watch this video a lot to both remind myself how perfect Damon Duanno is as Orpheus and to bask in the cathedral edit beauty like hot damn
Those garden scenes are so beautiful and detailed!! I wish I had your talent
thank you, but it ain't talent, just lots of work and reference! i'd already had some experience w/ painting and i used Over the Garden Wall backgrounds to figure out how to draw the nature stuff
Every time the light floods the screen sound the halfway point, it gets really hard to breathe. A little scary... but beautiful.
Every beat in the first 30 seconds, gave me shivers down my spine, god this song is beautiful, especially like this
you know a song is good when you get chills
talented brilliant incredible amazing spectacular showstopping totally unique completely not ever been done before unafraid to reference or not reference--
Didn't even notice the images at first so cool
this version makes me feel things inside, I legit start crying... it's so beautiful
The art is what I had in mind when playing the musical in my head! The glow, the feelings conveyed and just the 'feel' of this build up!
I don't know what it is, but this made me adore the key of Eb minor. It's so etherial and enchanting and so mystical, like you're singing with these fairies or ghosts and you feel warm and loved inside. This is beautiful. Thanks.
The art in this really drove it home beautiful
This was the last thing i watched before my ap english exam to ease my anxiety
i’ve been realistening to hadestown and just found this and i !!!! sobbing rn this is stunning with the visuals
You are very, very kind. 💛 Thank you.
If it suits you, there’s a full animatic of the London version on my channel too.
I've been a huge fan of hadestown for the last year and I've never seen this much beauty in a version of this song until I saw this video. Thank you.
this song feels like it should be listened to on a record player lying flat on your back between two speakers feeling the vibrations through the floor
I swear right now my whole body is covered in shivers and I can barely breath
And when Hades joins in the lalala, it was just too much
I came here for a fun echo edit of a beautiful song and I got TEARS (the good emotional kind)
Listening to this and going to see hadestown tomorrow night!! I can't wait
Update lol, it was life changingly beautiful, I cried a lot. J Antonio Rodriguez slayed the role of orpheus
This is still absolutely gorgeous, coming back several years later
I've always loved your cathedral edits, but the art on this is fantastic! I love the way you depicted the 'La La La' part, with a glow getting brighter until it consumes everything (It reminded me of the chandelier in Great Comet). And the end was just so beautiful and sweet. Thank you for all your hard work!
Its a misty night, the faint outlines of trees barely visible. The stillness, and the chill that creeps up my spine made me feel wistful. I layed my head on my window sill and listened to this, and welcomed the crisp bitter breeze. A winter night made indescribably beautiful. Thank you
i cry every time i watch this. seriously, it’s beautiful in every way. i mean, hadestown already makes me weak in the knees, but this is quite literally
poetry in motion and it gives me so many good feelings at once. I love this video.
Jaaliyah Rios god. ive been ruminating on this for the past 2 days unsure how to respond, and i gotta say this is very... touching of you to say, considering especially that i struggle w/ insecurity abt how well my work communicates the same emotions that drove me to make it, so... thank you, very very much 💛
The art that goes with this is so good. I pove how much emotion can be captured in the silhouettes.
This genuinely made me break down weeping. I love this song so much, and the visuals and extra reverberations just made me cry from the beauty of it. Thank you.
This is so beautiful idk know what words to use

This is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard. I saw the show last December and I would have bawled my eyes out even more if they kept this version.
Hey, I wanted you to know that this videi is the reason this is one of my all-time favourite songs ever. This video made me enjoy everything and to its full capacity, thank you.
You know, I've been watching this more than once now and I'm sobbing watching this at 2 am. This is just so wonderful
i come back to this whenever i need to feel something
okay i’m back and this is HANDS DOWN so beautiful bro why am i crying in the club
I like the pre Broadway version better already so I’m biased but THIS????? THIS is amazing
Dude, who gave you the right to make me cry like this??
this is STUNNING. when the people appeared among the scaffolding, i got tears in my eyes. this song has such a powerful, magical feeling, and you captured it PERFECTLY. wow.
THIS IS SO GORGEOUS OMG!!
damon daunno you will always be famous for this
I like both this and the Broadway version of the song for different reasons.
He'd be much less compelling if he just woke up and immediately brought back spring with a song
i miss this hadestown
THIS IS SO GORGEOUS FRIEND YOU'RE AMAZING AND SO DEDICATED
No song makes me cry like this one does. If I ever see this live, I’m gonna be bawling through the whole thing.
this is the best audio version available on youtube. I've checked them all
hades: give me a song before i kill u lol
orpheus: roasts the fuck out of hades
hades:... ok u can go
This is the only way i listen to epic iii now, thank you for this beautiful rendition ❤
this video is why this song and this performance is my favorite of the entire score
