I started wearing the modulars about seven years ago with a C3. Went through two of them. About to get the C5. I love them. Much quieter. More eyeglass-friendly. And being able to flip it up to converse with a buddy, fill up with gas, or just cool down a bit is a real plus.

I have had my C5 for a few months now, replacing my C4 pro. The ventilation is better than previous variants and as a glasses wearer very comfortable. Good to hear Mrs Flyer is still enjoying being on two wheels

    • @mrzoff3016
      @mrzoff3016 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I had a c3 basic for 6 years then got a c4, the ventilation isn't as good on the c4 and it gets condensation on at low speed very easily. I should have waited and got a c5 but at the time the prices were a bit high, now they are less than I paid for my c4. Other than that the c4 is good, although I see complaints online about the comms kit it works well for my uses (intercom with pillion and music when riding solo).

    Hi Andy,
What a great ride-out. The RE is looking gorgeous.
Yes to more just ambling rides and yes to more flying vlogs (I fly gliders).
I tried the Shuburth C5 at the bike show and it is definitely on my list for Santa. Very comfortable.

I do enjoy these rambling, no agenda, videos. Even more so when the audio is so good. About 2 years ago I went helmet shopping and the Scuberth was top of my list. Sadly, I don't have a Schuberth shaped head. The chap in the cap, if you know, you'll know who I mean, pointed me to the Shoei neotech 2. Fitted like it was made just for me, supremely quiet and comfortable. Pricey for sure, but has increased my riding enjoyment massively. Definitely converted me to flip front lids.

I’m totally flipped for nine years now. I have the C4 version. A flip-up helmet is (almost) a must when wearing glasses.
Schubert helmets are the only brand that more or less fits on my head. I like the quietness of the helmet. Quiet compared to other but there’s still noise to live with.

I picked up a used Schuberth C3 a few years ago. It is the first full coverage helmet I've ever owned that fits my over-size mellon properly (in size XXXL), and stays comfortable all day. When I downloaded the user manual, I learned you can remove the top vent, and omigawd; You catch some huge dead bees and wasps in there, and a remarkable amout of dust that needs to be cleaned out. This is the 2nd helmet I've owned with a drop-down sun visor, and I would never buy one without it. When riding in a shaded canyon, it is handy to bring it just part way down to dim the bright sky, but still see the road below it. You can also raise the visor just enough to look under it at the sat-nav, but through it for everything else.

I've avoided flip up helmets in the past because they seemed to have worse safety reviews than full face from the point of view of integrity in a crash. I wonder if anybody here can confirm or deny? Great video as ever Andy. When I look at other vloggers on the channel, nobody comes close to the quality of yours.

One perspective is that if a flip up passes the same tests as the full face helmets, and this one exceeds most of them, then they're safe.

  • @ragerider6283
    @ragerider6283 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Very enjoyable vid TMF.. As for the new lid, seems counter intuitive that a flip up helmet would be quieter but what you say about the neck seal makes sense. Not sure if I like them or not tbh but it"s a sufficiently interesting prospect that it's definitely worth investigating further. Also agree about white lids & visibility. Plus a lot of people often think you're a copper at first glance too.

I have had big problems finding a helmet that fits . I had a 2xl C3 flip front, but found it quite a hard interior. I bought a new LS2 3xl I am 63.5 cm head. The LS2 nearly ripped my ears off and still tight , no way is it a 3 xl,more like XL. I have eventually purchased a Shoei neotech2 flip front 2XL which has a much softer interior and fits perfect.Evidently the helmets made in Japan have more of a rounded shell as most Japanese have round heads.other crash helmets are more oval , and the sizing is all over the place.Good blog Andy.🏍🇸🇪👍

That being said, however, a serious crash on my pushbike a year ago taught me (the hard way) the benefits of a full face. While any sort of helmet will protect the general integrity of your skull, all the protruding bits can take a nasty hit.

    Went flip years ago.
Transforms riding. Shark Evo flips all the way over and gives the best of both worlds.
Travelling so slowly now I've ordered a shark open face with long distance ( ie , full length ) visor. It just lets so much of the world in, I find full face claustrophobic now.
Plus it's really light, which helps when we are riding 8 hours a day.
Because we travel all backtoads on our trips and travels I'm happy with the fact it must not be quite so good on the safety front.
    Enfield sounds lovely, BTW.
    Happy travels 👍

Shark Evoline helmets are great. I started with the first Evoline which was good but the flip down sun visor didn't come down far enough. Then i got the Evoline 2 which had a smaller shell size and better sun visor. But now I'm on to the Evoline 3 which is even better because it has the feature where you don't have to lift the visor up when flipping the front over because it does it automatically. The new Evo generation are even better than my Evoline 3. I would never go back to fixed full face helmets again. I also have the open face Shark Nano and the street fighter design open face Caberg ghost. I used to have the Shark Raw but the elastic strap on the goggles kept stretching, it was poorly designed and would have been better if it had the goggles from it's other helmet

I bought a Schuberth C3 helmet about 12 years ago and was really impressed by the quietness and the light weight. I bought the C4 Pro about 2 years ago. This has a less intrusive system with the comms unit integrated into the back of the helmet on one side and the battery on the other side. The comms. are crystal clear, as are yours whilst the visor is closed. I wasn't aware of the C5, but if it's an improvement on the C4 Pro, then that is probably where I'd go next. About 30 odd years ago, I commissioned an audiologist, to prepare a report on the causes of hearing damage to motorcyclists, who use motorcycles for their daily work. Personally, I have worn ear plugs for at least 35 years biking, but the upshot of the report was, that most of the noise experienced by motorcyclists is caused by the passage of the airflow over the helmet and especially it's detachment from the rear of the helmet and nothing to do with engine noise, as many used to think. Really good video again Andy.

Your bike mounted camera worked fine but the helmet camera's resolution deteriorated around the 10 to 15 minute mark. Recently bought a new helmet and tried dozens before I found one that was comfortable for a extended period. Sat in the shop with it on for over an hour to prove the point. Bought a Schuberth C3 pro. They are small for a flip top helmet and I had to buy a large size instead of my usual medium. C4 wasn't good and the C5 had only just been released and couldn't get for less than £499 at the time. For me, it's very comfortable and quiet, provides excellent side visibility. I'd never ride with the flip up and I find the ventilation good enough to not need to. I like the format of these "casual" blogs, they work well with the more focused stuff. Anyway, that's enough rambling, good work again Andy.

I do want one that’s good for cutting out wind noise and have looked at the flip fronts. It’s a shame the Schuberth doesn’t go all the way to the back of the helmet like the LS2 and a couple of others, but I think it’s a better quality helmet after reading reviews. Decisions decisions!

Yea, do more of the random vloggy stuff, very enjoyable. I have had all sorts of lids over the years, but when I got back into riding this time around, the first thing I got was a cheapie Bell flip, it was ok, but pretty loud at higher speeds, even with the extended chin curtain etc. I then bought an HJC Rpha 90 flip, which is a million times better on the noise front, also much lighter on the old noggin, plus the pinlock sold me on it. I'm planning on getting a new lid at some point this year, I was eyeing up the Neotec II, I heard that the Schuberth was more for a rounded head fit than an oval fit, but I might try one and see. Either way, modern flip lids are just leaps and bounds ahead of anything I ever used in the past and not being a racer, I would never go back to using a full face lid now.

The audio is excellent, Andy, even with the flip up. The Shoei Neotech II and the Schuberth C5 are arguable the best flip-ups helmets on the market. I got a superb deal on a P/J dual homologated Shoei Neotech II Respect TC-10 (Blue/Red/White). It's top quality, very plush, extremely quiet, has unbelievable optics (CNS-3 shield/QSV-1 EN1836 sun shield), and a splendid stainless steel micro-ratchet-type chinstrap that doesn't nip your skin. It's by far the best helmet I've bought, and best of all I can wear it all day without any pain! For day-to-day riding, a flip-up is my personal choice of helmet, because they're quite, and extremely practical. The only downside I've found is the weight; with my comms unit fitted, my helmet weighs in at 2kg! Strangely, I don't really feel it. The prices are a lot higher than what you've quoted, Andy, the Schuberth C5 is £500 to £600, which is comparable with the Shoei Neotech II.

@@johnDukemaster I don't notice any weight issues. I also have no issues with wind pushing my head back at high speeds. It seems very aerodynamic. My head is 59.5cm and a large fits good. Great review, Andy. I got the C3 Pro flip (also my first) which helps to keep my varifocals in place putting the lid on rather than having to put them on through the visor. It’s a little snug but nice kit and suits me. Reasonably quiet too.

Having had a C3 and currently ride with a C4 pro, I'm keen to see what the C5 is like. Not sure riding with a tinted visor and sunglasses optimises the value of the drop down internal visor. It's ideal being able to go untinted with a flick of a switch when you go through under trees or when daylight reduces.

Many thanks Mr Flyer, oh yes the ideal leisurely bike riding day for your 'Enfield. The rear-facing camera seems perfectly ok with those additional support arms, audio likewise perfectly fine. Careful of those unknown little lanes - many-a-time I have ended up in a farm yard, or worse lol. I see you are still a white van magnet hehe. I use a white helmet in the summer just because it reflects the heat better, but as you say higher visibility is a great point. BTW I'm reminded just how lovely your customisation looks on the bike. I look forward to your next vlog. Have fun and stay safe 🚵:>)

Great video quality, looks like a great day to ride! I went with a flip up helmet a couple months ago, I’ll never go back to a traditional one. I guess the only drawback is they tend to be a bit heavier and pricier, but I think it’s worth it for the extra features and functionality.

Excellent sound. No issues with clarity. I have a LS2 Valliant II Modular in white. I ride mostly, on my 2018 Goldwing, with the helmet in full face mode however I do enjoy the ability to flip the chin bar over locked back. The inner sun visor (the best quality yet-no sunglasses required) and clear visor are still in front of my eyes. Fit is more for medium oval noggin. My long oval required a XXL size. It gets hot here in southern Ontario so the option to flip is a pleasure.

You talked about noise levels and comfort but failed to mention some of the things that I always consider when buying a helmet like weight and airflow.
I understand the need for ventilation in helmets but it's something that many manufacturers get very wrong, I've never understood the need for jets of air passing over my eyes which dries them out or a scoop on the chin guard which directs a blast of air and insects straight into my mouth ! I find there are usually far too many scoops and ducts for ventilation options on helmets, most of which I can live without and they often get snagged or crushed when you have the helmet off so they break and fall off if you are not super careful ! The Schuberth seems to have nothing in the way of flaps that can snag or break off which is a good thing for me but is the ventilation adequate, I did notice a fair bit of mist on the visor once or twice and that was a warm day.

Until then I will stick with the Touratech Adventuro Mod.

Still persevering with an old Schuberth J1, (with the detachable chin bar), but until something serious breaks, it`s still got a few miles left in it. I sent my 2nd C5 back. You will find that the visor hinge mechanism plays up after a while. Also, if using the fitted handsfree kit, the mic fouls on the lid when opening and closing which is very annoying and distracting. Went back to the faithful Shoei Neotec 2.

Have a C4 Pro with the Sena bluetooth mainly for city use so I can flip it up and not remove it for shopping etc. It saves a lot of time as I can leave the specs on. The ratchet is also faster than D rings. Visor / pin lock / sunshade all 1st rate.
My Arai is lighter and I think quieter, but it is a 1 piece.
Big $$$ for Schberth in Oz.
BTW Shark Evo 3 is a true open face alternative. The C4 is only suitable for "urban" speeds flipped up.
The new bluetooth buttons are easier to access, but more obtrusive.

Great vlog. I noted your comment that the lid has been tested with the front up and down. My experience is that the wind does catch the rather sail-like flipped up front making riding with it in that position at anything over very low speeds not good, fairly obvious really. As an aside, I can recommend the Shark Evo where the front flips right to the back thus you have an 'open face' lid. My mate uses a LS2 Valiant which does the same and gets great reports from him. My Evo may be a touch noisy but as I wear fitted ear plugs I have no issue. Love the exhaust note on your Enfield!
