  • Sometimes, it's hard to see emotional abuse when it's happening. Sometimes, you were young and thought it was normal. What about now? Are you living in it, or suffering from the long-term effects of it? How do you know? Listen for answers to these questions.
    HIGHLIGHTS OF TODAY'S EPISODE:
    🚧 Signs of emotional abuse
🚧 Why emotional abuse is the hardest to recognize
🚧 How emotional abuse affects you like mold in your house
🚧 The accumulative effects of long-term emotional abuse
🚧 Why it is essential to recognize and admit that you have experienced emotional abuse.
Emotional abuse can be hard to recognize in the beginning. Some people have difficult naming it, even after experiencing it for far too long. This episode will help you understand the underlying nature of living with emotional abuse. I offer the analogy between living with emotional abuse and having black mold in your house. Understanding those similarities can help you get a handle on the extent of emotional abuse you may have experienced, or be experiencing.
Think of the effects of living with spreading mold in your basement or under your kitchen sink. You are unaware of it, yet it keeps on affecting you. Eventually, you find the cause. I hope this episode will help you pinpoint emotional abuse earlier, rather than later.
Were you abused? Are you being abused? Are you healing from abuse?. I'm here to help.

    Mold is a fantastic analogy.
Boy if I was taught this information
at 10 years old it would have saved me decades of pain and suffering.

What you are describing is exactly what’s going on, thank you for wording it right. I’m grateful for you. 😊

This was spot on. I guess it’s not just aging that’s causing so much memory loss and insomnia. Mold-Perfect analogy

Your analogy of the mold was so interesting and resonant -- that really landed. My Dad's an elderly hijackal and a hoarder. His treatment of the house has been a metaphor for his relationship with others in the world (even physical objects, which he arranges around himself but he also abuses and neglects -- he objectifies people and humanizes objects). He's oblivious and people enable him while blaming me (adult child daughter) for going No Contact. I think they blame me for both the state of the house (which they've never seen) AND that I'm No Contact due to the abuse and neglect, so that means I'm bad and he's a poor old guy. No, he literally makes other people sick but it's all behind closed doors. My mom dropped dead after about 40 years of marriage; I'm 42 and not in good health, either. I had to cut him out. I had to eradicate him. And, if you've ever dealt with mold in a house, it is VERY hard to get rid of.

It IS like mold, isn't it? I believe you. You had to eradicate him. Hijackals are SO good at playing the victim and spinning stories that make them the victim or the hero.
These people who blame you? They seem like good people to avoid as well, right? You're on a good path to health on every level. There is wisdom in walking away from abuse even when no one else wants to, or can, see it for what it is. Self-care is not selfish, it's wise. I wish you well.

Omg it is huge every single word PACKED Into sentence
    I’m frustrated so confused.
I know this truth but I cant even say one sentence with ONE of the truth words
back to my sister , brother and Witch Mother . Im going to see all three abusives on Christmas as we take care of nm 92 yrs old.
But also to be honest i have no close family members left , me 68.
It is a very frightening experience
to NOW KNOW in a very real way
I ALONE in my old age.
    Does anyone else know this?
Terror I never experienced this growing up because we are a very large extended family with a life of gatherings .
Now no-one . Everyone has their personal families , cousins etc.
What can older abuse victims. do
When they don’t have their own family?????????
    Great ... I’m well and alone 68

I know. When you've been surrounded by Hijackals all your life, it can be very difficult to reach out and find healthier friends. So many people find themselves in this situation, and it's unsettling when you're older, for sure.
I suggest finding a like-minded community group to join, and begin by finding one possible friend. When we've made discoveries about the abuse in our lives, it's wise to not mention it as we forge new friendships, right?

Dear Dr. Shaler, thank you so much for your videos. I would like to join but it is 5 A.M. in our area. I like the way you are talking that critisism is a way of control. Completely true! In Russia I wrote a book, fiction book -- the collection stories of toxic parenrs. The book is becoming more and more popular, I decided to present it to my doctor. She sent me 7 devaluative messages back:"Your book did not touch me" in 30 "What for diggesting it the 7th time". She told contemptuously that probably my mission and the mission of my book is to motovate people to read smth really worth.

Congratulations on your book! People need to hear that they are not alone in having toxic parents, for sure. I'm sorry to hear that your doctor was unwilling to be kind or validating.

For that topic of men hate women does that mean that those men are possibly gay? I’m not against gay people so I’m not saying that to target anyone. 😊

Haters come in all genders and identifications, and so do abusers.
